4.1 Extent of familiarization<br />

1) The extent of familiarization and basic safety training required of personnel joining a<br />
vessel will vary by group. See the table in section 4.3.<br />
2) The master is responsible for ensuring that the training is given and for relating the<br />
general topics to the particular circumstances of the vessel.<br />
4.2 Group definitions<br />
There are four groups, defined as follows:<br />
a) Group 1<br />
All persons on board who have<br />
not completed the Basic Safety<br />
Courses applicable to the<br />
vessel<br />
b) Group 2<br />
Persons who have completed<br />
the Basic Safety Course<br />
applicable to the vessel<br />
c) Group 3<br />
Holders of a certificate of<br />
competency who have not<br />
completed MED D training<br />
d) Group 4<br />
Holders of a certificate of<br />
competency who have<br />
completed MED D training<br />
Examples:<br />
− untrained new entrants to industry who have not<br />
completed that training<br />
− those aboard for repairs, maintenance or similar<br />
purposes<br />
− those aboard whose tasks are confined to a special<br />
industrial, scientific or similar purpose<br />
Examples:<br />
− small vessel operators and small vessel<br />
machinery operators<br />
− non-certificated ratings with more than 6 months’<br />
sea time<br />
Examples:<br />
− Masters, Limited and Chief Mates, Limited<br />
− Watchkeeping Mates and Fourth-Class Engineers<br />
− certificated ratings<br />
Examples:<br />
− Masters<br />
− Chief Mates<br />
− First, Second and Third-Class Engineers
