Scheduling your admission 4 Your health insurance Blood Center Preparing for Your Stay If your hospitalization was scheduled in advance, your doctor’s office will notify you of your admission date and what time to arrive at the medical center. Your doctor may also schedule outpatient medical tests such as laboratory studies or X-rays. These tests will be performed at the hospital and usually take place the week before your admission. If you must cancel or delay admission, please contact your doctor as soon as possible. Before scheduling your admission, your doctor’s office will obtain approval from your insurance company. An admitting counselor will call you before your admission to review your insurance benefits. You will also be contacted if any payment is due at the time of your admission. UCSF Medical Center will bill your insurance company directly. You will be billed for any part of your hospital fees not covered by your insurance company. (415) 353-1966 The Blood Center offers a variety of blood donation programs for UCSF patients and the donor community. These include: � Autologous donations – Giving blood for yourself � Directed donations – Giving blood for a specific patient � Volunteer donations – Giving blood to the UCSF patient community � Plateletpheresis – Giving platelets to patients with special needs � Mobile Blood Van available on request The Blood Center is located in Millberry Union, 500 Parnassus Ave., Room MU09, Level I (on the same level as the ATMs). It is a walk-in clinic; no appointment is necessary. Website Interpreting services Lodging for family and friends What to bring to the hospital To prepare for your hospital stay, please visit www.ucsfhealth.org. There you will find detailed information about your condition and its treatment, biographies of your doctors, answers to questions about billing, insurance and much more. Interpreters for many languages including Spanish, Russian, Cantonese and Mandarin are available for our patients. We also can provide interpreters in American Sign Language. Please label all items with your name. You may want to bring: ❑ Toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, shaver, special soaps, etc.) ❑ Robe (we provide you with a lightweight robe, but you may want to use your own) ❑ A small amount of cash ($10 or less) ❑ Medical devices, such as hearing aids and dentures ❑ A telephone calling card for long-distance calls (toll calls cannot be charged to your hospital bill) Please do not bring valuables such as jewelry, large sums of cash, cell phones, computers, pagers or video equipment. If you are unable to send money and small valuable items home with family members, they may be stored in a safe at UCSF Medical Center Security Services.
