The solution was a separate cover Scene of the action: the extraction system from the cupola furnace in TRM‘s smelting plant – here, the top gas which is extracted is cooled with water after passing through the preliminary coarse separator. The particles of dust carried along in the flow of gas are wetted at the same time. The dirty water is then separated from the gas in the disintegrator – a rotor which generates the suction required for extraction – and is pumped into a sludge tank. The nozzles on the disintegrator always suffered wear at just one point, namely at the covers that were bolted onto them. Slavko Zivanovic found it irritating that if a cover became worn it was always the entire nozzle that had to be replaced. He therefore suggested that the cover should be produced as a separate part, so that it would then be only this part that had to be replaced. This produced a net annual saving of about 1,400 Euros. Slavko Zivanovic was awarded a prize of 140 Euros for this „STOP sign“ suggestion. An opening rather than bins Now that pipes were being centrifugally cast, the founders at TRM‘s foundry had lost their supply of bins for slag. What had always been used in the past were the empty bins for the core wash or blacking used in the core-making department. To have suitable containers specially made would cost around 6,000 Euros. But a good idea by Zvonko Kupresak, Bozo Markovic and Ahmet Sahbaz made any such investment unnecessary. What they suggested was that, instead of the bins, a opening pointing downward should simply be made to the rear of the tipping unit, so that the slag could drop straight into the slag hoppers situated beneath it. Sections of scrap pipes could be used as infeed chutes. This procedure also makes the work that has to be done considerably simpler, because the slag hoppers can now be emptied simply with a fork-lift truck. There repeatedly used to be small fires when the full hoppers were emptied because of incandescent slag that they contained. This was an effective and efficient suggestion and for it the ingenious trio were given a prize of 600 Euros. On the right is Armin Eberl, chairman of the works council Employees busy making „STOP sign“ suggestions at BGW Since the „STOP sign“ scheme began at BGW, Ludger Bellscheidt, the company‘s Head of Quality Control, and Hans- Günter Cromm, a fitter in the maintenance department, have each submitted eleven „STOP sign“ suggestions and, in numerical terms, are the current record-holders. One of the suggestions that Ludger Bellscheidt submitted related to the processing of complaints in the Applications Engineering Division. When complaints were received, they were entered there in a register and reports were drawn up and were distributed in the form of copies. This process was outdated so, to improve it, Ludger Bellscheidt developed an Excel form on which the complaints are now entered and which also allows them to be placed in a listing at the same time as the form is saved. By means of this Excel application, it is also possible for an analysis to be performed automatically by reference to a catalogue of faults, thus dispensing with the need for time-consuming checklists for the assessment of complaints. The development of this special Excel application has made it possible to dispense with the expensive programming that would otherwise have been needed. Bellscheidt shared the prize for the suggestion with Stefan Hobohm, who did a great deal of work in seeing to the introduction of the application in the RV-A department. It struck Hans-Günter Cromm that, in the pipe-painting department, the place where the valves of the spray guns were kept, namely below the cable-operated towing arrangement, was not very good and that they were exposed to heavy fouling there. Consequently, there were often failures of these sensitive devices. The ingenious fitter therefore suggested that the spray guns be placed neatly in a cabinet, that markings be applied to show which valve belonged to which gun and that the air lines be laid in a cable duct so that they would be protected from fouling. This new layout saves time and the system suffers fewer failures. Incidentally, as from mid-way through the year there will be a new co-ordinator, Doreen Wittkamp, who will be continuing the development of the „STOP sign“ scheme at BGW.
A nice, but heavy, present: a ton of molten iron for the Special Castings company Buderus Spezialguss GmbH has invested seven million Euros to ensure that it will be equal to the task of satisfying the growing demand that the future will bring for steam and gas turbines and wind powered generators. On the 10th of April, an inauguration ceremony was held for the new testing and acceptance building, the sand preparation system and the new casting pit. In view of this important event (it is after all the biggest capital investment the company had made since 1901), Buderus Giesserei Wetzlar GmbH wanted to make a generous gesture. It donated a ton of molten iron. It was a nice, but heavy, present so Ulrich Päßler, CEO of BGW, handed it over to his opposite number at BSG, Karlheinz Bangel, in a more portable form – a credit note. Päßler stressed that the investment was a clear signal to the Wetzlar site and wished the people at Special Castings every success for the future. Day of Action on the 30th of August Following the great success that it was last year, BGW will be organising a second Day of Action on the 0th of August – when hopefully we shall have bright sunshine for it. After combined activities to beautify our working environment, this Saturday will once again be brought to an end by a good, solid meal for all the „actioneers and actioneeresses“, which will be some reward for their efforts. Invitation to the Family Day on the 13th of September Jointly with BSG, BGW will be launching its second Family Day on the 1 th of September. In the same way as last year, excellent entertainment and food and drink will be provided. Once again, lottery tickets will be on sale with the chance to win attractive prizes, there will be guided tours of the works and to round things off there will certain other attractions for young and old. Mainly though, our Family Day will be an opportunity for people to meet one another in company with their friends and relatives, to have a chat and to spend time together in a relaxed atmosphere.
