Dear Student,<br />

Thank you very much <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> interest shown in our <strong>Master</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Architecture</strong> Course “Dessau International<br />

<strong>Architecture</strong> (DIA)” , part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Post-Graduate Studies Programme at <strong>Hochschule</strong> Anhalt Dessau (Anhalt<br />

University <strong>of</strong> Sciences).<br />

At DIA all tuition is held in English.<br />

It is a course <strong>of</strong> 4 semesters duration. In <strong>the</strong> first three semesters, a full curriculum is <strong>the</strong> basis <strong>of</strong> studies, with<br />

<strong>the</strong> design studio at its core. The studios and part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> curriculum are organized consecutively <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> 1 st Year<br />

and <strong>the</strong> 2 nd Year, <strong>the</strong> latter consisting <strong>of</strong> a preparative 3 rd Semester and <strong>the</strong> 4 th semester being <strong>the</strong> Thesis<br />

Semester, where <strong>the</strong>re are only few lectures and classes to which attendance is compulsory.<br />

We generally recommend full attention and presence in or near to Dessau throughout <strong>the</strong> course including <strong>the</strong><br />

4 th semester.<br />

The course has <strong>the</strong> following admission requirements:<br />

Candidates must be in possession <strong>of</strong> a Bachelor Degree or a Diploma in <strong>Architecture</strong> with minimum study<br />

duration <strong>of</strong> 3 years. Candidates are asked to submit a portfolio with max. 3 recently designed projects. The<br />

portfolio must be sent as a hard copy or CD ROM which <strong>the</strong> institute will keep and will not return. Exceptions<br />

to a Bachelor in <strong>Architecture</strong> can only be made <strong>for</strong> <strong>applicants</strong> <strong>of</strong> related pr<strong>of</strong>essions, and when qualifications<br />

above average can be demonstrated.<br />

After submission and evaluation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> portfolio, an additional personal interview can be requested. Candidates<br />

from non English-speaking countries, or countries where English is not used as an <strong>of</strong>ficial language, must have<br />

a valid TOEFL test (minimum 500 paper-based points / 173 computer-based / 61 internet-based) or IELTS test.<br />

A test in German as a Foreign Language is not a requirement. However, <strong>for</strong> <strong>for</strong>eign students compulsory<br />

german lessons will be provided within <strong>the</strong> curriculum <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> course during <strong>the</strong> first three, so that your<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>iciency in German will help you to integrate yourself here more easily.

2. Dates<br />

There is one date when admission to <strong>the</strong> course is possible: For <strong>the</strong> Winter Semester beginning 1st October<br />

<strong>of</strong> each year. (Courses and lectures end by <strong>the</strong> middle <strong>of</strong> February). Complete admission documents must<br />

be submitted by <strong>the</strong> 15th June <strong>of</strong> that year.<br />

3. Degree<br />

On successful completion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> course <strong>the</strong> degree <strong>Master</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Architecture</strong> (M.Arch.) is obtained. After each<br />

semester a student can only be admitted into <strong>the</strong> next or <strong>the</strong> <strong>Master</strong> Thesis Semester on having obtained <strong>the</strong><br />

required credit points in <strong>the</strong> respective semesters. This is especially valid <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> studio project in which at least<br />

a grade “E" or “pass" is necessary. According to <strong>the</strong> curriculum a total <strong>of</strong> 90 credit points must be achieved in<br />

order to gain admission into <strong>the</strong> 4 th semester.<br />

The Thesis will count ano<strong>the</strong>r 30 credits, so that <strong>the</strong> total sum <strong>of</strong> 120 credit points is necessary to obtain <strong>the</strong><br />

degree.<br />

4. Administrative Fee<br />

Every student is expected to pay 700,- € per Semester <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Master</strong> Program plus 46,-€ <strong>for</strong> school. Students<br />

holding a different degree than Bachelor / diploma in <strong>Architecture</strong> are expected to pay 1250,-€ per Semester<br />

plus 46,-€ due to more intense mentoring.<br />

Please do also consider that students are required to have sufficient financial means so as to be able to support<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir stay here in Germany. These costs are estimated to be approx. 650,- – 800.- € per month <strong>of</strong>.<br />

There are no scholarship funds from DIA available <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> course.<br />

In general, <strong>the</strong> Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD) can grant a few scholarships. These grants<br />

are highly competitive and applications are worldwide <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>se scholarships.<br />

Applications <strong>for</strong> such DAAD scholarships must however be handed in to DAAD by Sept. 30th <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> year prior to<br />

<strong>the</strong> intended beginning <strong>of</strong> study. Fur<strong>the</strong>r In<strong>for</strong>mation on such grants can be looked up under www.daad.de.<br />

There is no restriction however <strong>for</strong> a student to work in Germany during his semester breaks.


5. Housing<br />

There is capacity in student dormitories <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> university. Students are requested to file <strong>the</strong>ir application <strong>for</strong> such<br />

places at an early stage after admission has been granted (if not already submitted with <strong>the</strong> application<br />

documents) and address such requests to<br />

6. Campus<br />

Part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> tuition is held in <strong>the</strong> old Bauhaus Building (opened 1927 by Walter Gropius). There is an additional<br />

new campus opened recently (2000), comprising studio space <strong>for</strong> each student, lecture halls, library, model<br />

shop, canteen and last but not least a student cafe.<br />

7. Visa and enrollment at DIA (applies only <strong>for</strong> students from Non - EU countires)<br />

Experience has shown, that it can take quite a long time <strong>for</strong> a student from abroad, who requires a visa to enter<br />

Germany, to hold such a visa in his/her hands. We <strong>the</strong>re<strong>for</strong>e advise any such student to apply <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> visa as<br />

soon as he/she is in possession <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> admission papers to DIA <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> requested semester <strong>of</strong> entry.<br />

It is important to know that you will only obtain a visa to Germany, if you can provide pro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> availability <strong>of</strong><br />

667.- € minimum living expenses / month <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> duration <strong>of</strong> your stay to <strong>the</strong> respective German Embassy or<br />

Consulate in your country <strong>of</strong> origin stay (please do confirm <strong>the</strong> exact sum with a german embassy or<br />

consulate!).<br />

Additionally, we advise <strong>for</strong>eign students in general to arrive in Dessau at least 1-2 week be<strong>for</strong>e classes start,<br />

in order to allow time <strong>for</strong> registration at <strong>the</strong> university and town hall and settle all required matters like health<br />

insurance or opening <strong>of</strong> a bank account.<br />
