Dear Student,
Thank you very much for the interest shown in our Master of Architecture Course “Dessau International
Architecture (DIA)” , part of the Post-Graduate Studies Programme at Hochschule Anhalt Dessau (Anhalt
University of Sciences).
At DIA all tuition is held in English.
It is a course of 4 semesters duration. In the first three semesters, a full curriculum is the basis of studies, with
the design studio at its core. The studios and part of the curriculum are organized consecutively for the 1 st Year
and the 2 nd Year, the latter consisting of a preparative 3 rd Semester and the 4 th semester being the Thesis
Semester, where there are only few lectures and classes to which attendance is compulsory.
We generally recommend full attention and presence in or near to Dessau throughout the course including the
4 th semester.

The course has the following admission requirements:
Candidates must be in possession of a Bachelor Degree or a Diploma in Architecture with minimum study
duration of 3 years. Candidates are asked to submit a portfolio with max. 3 recently designed projects. The
portfolio must be sent as a hard copy or CD ROM which the institute will keep and will not return. Exceptions
to a Bachelor in Architecture can only be made for applicants of related professions, and when qualifications
above average can be demonstrated.
After submission and evaluation of the portfolio, an additional personal interview can be requested. Candidates
from non English-speaking countries, or countries where English is not used as an official language, must have
a valid TOEFL test (minimum 500 paper-based points / 173 computer-based / 61 internet-based) or IELTS test.
A test in German as a Foreign Language is not a requirement. However, for foreign students compulsory
german lessons will be provided within the curriculum of the course during the first three, so that your
proficiency in German will help you to integrate yourself here more easily.

2. Dates
There is one date when admission to the course is possible: For the Winter Semester beginning 1st October
of each year. (Courses and lectures end by the middle of February). Complete admission documents must
be submitted by the 15th June of that year.

3. Degree
On successful completion of the course the degree Master of Architecture (M.Arch.) is obtained. After each
semester a student can only be admitted into the next or the Master Thesis Semester on having obtained the
required credit points in the respective semesters. This is especially valid for the studio project in which at least
a grade “E" or “pass" is necessary. According to the curriculum a total of 90 credit points must be achieved in
order to gain admission into the 4 th semester.
The Thesis will count another 30 credits, so that the total sum of 120 credit points is necessary to obtain the
degree.
4. Administrative Fee
Every student is expected to pay 700,- € per Semester for the Master Program plus 46,-€ for school. Students
holding a different degree than Bachelor / diploma in Architecture are expected to pay 1250,-€ per Semester
plus 46,-€ due to more intense mentoring.
Please do also consider that students are required to have sufficient financial means so as to be able to support
their stay here in Germany. These costs are estimated to be approx. 650,- – 800.- € per month of.
There are no scholarship funds from DIA available for the course.
In general, the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD) can grant a few scholarships. These grants
are highly competitive and applications are worldwide for these scholarships.
Applications for such DAAD scholarships must however be handed in to DAAD by Sept. 30th of the year prior to
the intended beginning of study. Further Information on such grants can be looked up under www.daad.de.
There is no restriction however for a student to work in Germany during his semester breaks.

5. Housing
There is capacity in student dormitories of the university. Students are requested to file their application for such
places at an early stage after admission has been granted (if not already submitted with the application
documents) and address such requests to

6. Campus
Part of the tuition is held in the old Bauhaus Building (opened 1927 by Walter Gropius). There is an additional
new campus opened recently (2000), comprising studio space for each student, lecture halls, library, model
shop, canteen and last but not least a student cafe.
7. Visa and enrollment at DIA (applies only for students from Non - EU countires)
Experience has shown, that it can take quite a long time for a student from abroad, who requires a visa to enter
Germany, to hold such a visa in his/her hands. We therefore advise any such student to apply for the visa as
soon as he/she is in possession of the admission papers to DIA for the requested semester of entry.
It is important to know that you will only obtain a visa to Germany, if you can provide proof of the availability of
667.- € minimum living expenses / month for the duration of your stay to the respective German Embassy or
Consulate in your country of origin stay (please do confirm the exact sum with a german embassy or
consulate!).
Additionally, we advise foreign students in general to arrive in Dessau at least 1-2 week before classes start,
in order to allow time for registration at the university and town hall and settle all required matters like health
insurance or opening of a bank account.
