BATTERY CHARGERS - TESTERS - DIAGNOSTIC TOOLS
Important OptiMate facts
1 : Why do batteries become sulfated?
TecMate has worked with OEs such as Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Yuasa and East Penn Manufacturing
in learning why batteries sulfate & how to recover batteries from a deep discharged, sulfated condition.
We confi rmed the following:
When a battery is discharged, the sulphuric ‘battery’ acid separates into lead sulfate and water. When batteries
are left in a discharged state for too long sulfate crystals will form on the lead plates, increasing the electrical
resistance of the battery. The higher the concentration of sulfate crystals the higher the electrical resistance
which typically prevents current from being accepted by the battery at normal charge voltages (14,1 to 14,5V).
In winter the water separated from the acid in a discharged battery freezes at temperatures below 32°F / 0°C.
When water freezes it expands resulting in bent & buckled plates or a cracked casing.
Heat is a big killer of lead-acid batteries. At high temperature water evaporates, increasing the concentration
of lead sulfate which speeds up the formation of sulfate crystals. At some point the concentration of sulfate
crystals may become so high that permanent electro-mechanical damage (plates being short circuited) is
caused inside the battery.
2 : Why can OptiMate recover sulfated batteries that other smart chargers cannot?
If a standard smart charger that typically charge up to 14,1 to 14,5V is hooked up to a sulfated battery the
voltage will immediately rise from a very low level (typically less than half the battery voltage) to the maximum
as the charger ‘sees’ the sulfated battery as a full battery due to it’s higher than normal internal resistance.
Current into the battery remains in the micro amp range, too low to reverse the sulfation process. A standard
charger will indicate within seconds that the battery is fully charged and some may indicate the battery is faulty
and should be replaced.
OptiMate has a smarter charging method that fi rst detects condition of a battery and then it decides how to
charge it. It starts with forcing a small current pulse into the battery to see if the battery accepts charge. If not,
then OptiMate engages the DESULFATE mode and now the charging voltage is allowed up to a maximum of
22V in an attempt to force the battery to accept current. Usually within 5 minutes a battery with a chance at
recovery will begin to accept current, causing the sulfate crystals to disolve and combine with water remaining
in the battery to again form high concentrate acid. If the OptiMate determines that the battery has recovered
suffi ciently it will increase the charge current and the program will advance to bulk, cell balancing and verifi cation
charging.
3 : How would I know if OptiMate has successfully recovered a sulfated battery?
The fi nal charge stage of the OptiMate program is followed by a charge retention test to confi rm if the battery
has been adequately recovered. Indication of the result ranges from basic to comprehensive, depending on
the OptiMate model in use.
4 : Why do sealed AGM batteries recover from sulfation more effectively than fi ller cap / wet cell
batteries?
In sealed AGM batteries the water remains absorbed in the fi breglass mat separators whilst the lead sulfate
remain on the plates. Due to this sulfation will occur at a faster pace on the plates itself compared to wet cell /
fi ller cap batteries, but the water will not evaporate out of the sealed battery as it would with wet cell / fi ller cap
batteries. AGM batteries therefore have a much higher chance of full recovery even if the battery has been
left discharged for many months. The OptiMate charging method works best with AGM batteries, but will also
recover fi ller cap / wet cell batteries that have not suffered visible mechanical damage (e.g. bulging or cracked
case) or high loss of electrolyte.
The degree of effectiveness of the recovery depends on how soon after the battery became sulfated is it
hooked up to an OptiMate. We have letters on fi le from a number of OptiMate users testifying to effective
recovery of batteries left discharged (and believed to be dead) for two years.
5 : Can OptiMate’s high voltage desulfation mode damage vehicle electronics ?
The simple answer is NO. A sulfated battery’s voltage will initially be in the 2 to 6V range. Vehicle electronics
need 11V or more before current is drawn. Upon connection OptiMate will attempt to deliver current causing
the battery voltage to rise, but if current draw is sensed before 14V is reached normal charge mode will engage
for an OptiMate 3+ or 5 where-as OptiMate 4 & 6 with its more advanced program will allow desulfation
charging up to 16V at a very low current for a maximum of two hours, allowing safe low level desulfation even
with the battery in the vehicle.
IMPORTANT: For the best chance of full recovery a sulfated battery must be disconnected from the
vehicle wiring before connecting to the OptiMate.
6 : Can OptiMate maintain fi ller cap & AGM batteries at 100% for many months without damage?
YES. The OptiMate range’s maintenance mode fl oat voltage is set at 13,6V which is correct for modern sealed
batteries, but the unique limited duty (30 minute charge, 30 minute rest) maintenance charging cycle reduces
the average voltage to a level suitable for fi ller cap / wet cell batteries. The rest period further allows the acid to
settle and cool which eliminates electrolyte loss in sealed batteries and signifi cantly reduces water loss in fi ller
cap / wet cell batteries.
7 : Can the OptiMate maintain a battery stored (in a vehicle) in very hot or cold temperatures?
The battery does not have to be removed from the vehicle. OptiMate’s unique maintenance charge level
with 30 min charge and 30 min rest periods allow safe long term maintenance charging in storage temperatures
ranging from -4°F / -20°C to 95°F / 35°C. Long term maintenance charging down to -13°F / -30°C is
possible with OptiMate 4 and 6. The level of the electrolyte in fi ller cap batteries should be regularly checked
and topped up at storage temperatures above 86°F / 30°C.
8 : Can OptiMate extend the life of my battery?
A good quality battery that has been correctly initialized when new and is always maintained with an OptiMate
when the vehicle is not in use, can last for 5 years or more whilst continuing to deliver the same power as if
it was new. Even a battery that has been neglected and delivers poor performance will become stronger the
longer it remains connected to an OptiMate.
These claims have been proven by OptiMate users and that is why 9 powersport / leisure vehicle manufacturers,
including Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Triumph and Derbi endorse the OptiMate charging method.
9 : Can the OptiMate test my battery?
All OptiMate models include a 30 minute ‘no charge’ voltage check to determine if a sulfated battery
could recover or not. OptiMate 4 & 6 include a TEST LED panel that indicate 5 possible results,
providing the user with more information on battery condition. The OptiMate 6 and the professional
level OptiMate PRO-S & PRO2 include a further 12 hour extended ‘overnight’ test that allows the battery
to cool for a more accurate test result. ( a warm battery may indicate a higher voltage than is true )
OptiMate conducts daily tests that alternate with maintenance charging.
10 : Why buy an OptiMate instead of a simple plug in type trickle charger that is $20-$30 cheaper?
Your choice of charger depends on your expectation of battery performance as well as guaranteed peace of
mind when it comes to unsupervised storage of vehicles for long periods of time.
Cost & time to replace a battery, especially sealed AGM batteries that are more expensive.
The difference in price between an OptiMate that is guaranteed to extend the life and performance of your
battery and a plug in trickle charger is but a fraction of the cost of any reasonable quality AGM battery.
I have no idea what type or size of battery is in the vehicle / craft.
OptiMate is designed to recharge and maintain fi ller cap / wet cell & all types of sealed AGM and GEL leadacid
batteries automatically. OptiMate 3+ & 4 are recommended for batteries in small to medium sized
vehicles (motorcycles, small cars, PWC / wet bikes) and OptiMate 5 & 6 are recommended for batteries in
medium to large vehicles & boats (medium to large cars, boats).
Forgot to hook up the charger OR left the ignition / lights on and now the battery is sulfated.
OptiMate can desulfate and recover neglected batteries that a standard maintenance charger cannot.
Your battery died on you, but your charger continues to say it is good.
Standard maintenance chargers cannot test batteries. OptiMate tests your battery daily and indicates if it can
actually retain a charge or not. Over the life of the battery OptiMate 4 and OptiMate 6 will warn you when it is
time to replace the battery - the LED indications will change from green to yellow to red as the battery wears.
A yellow indication means “replace soon” a red indication means “replace now!”.
BATTERY CHARGERS - TESTERS - DIAGNOSTIC TOOLS
General battery charging facts
What is CCA? - Cold Cranking Amps is a rating used in the battery industry to defi ne a battery’s ability to start an engine
in cold temperatures. The rating is the number of amps a new, fully charged battery can deliver at 0°F / -18°C for 30
seconds, while maintaining a voltage of at least 7.2 volts, for a 12 volt battery. The higher the CCA rating, the greater the
starting power of the battery. The higher the temperature the higher the CCA capability of the battery, conversely the lower
the temperature the less CCA it can deliver. This is why batteries with higher CCA ratings are in demand in cold climates.
Amp Hour Rating - An Amp hour is defi ned as the number of hours a new, fully charged battery is able to deliver a fi xed
current down to a battery voltage of 10.5 volts. Powersport batteries have a 10 hour rating which means, the Amp hour is
rated according to the fi xed current drawn in 10 hours to a voltage of 10.5V. Automotive & marine usually have a 20 hour
rating.
SLI - Description applied to batteries used for Starting, Lighting & Ignition.
AGM - Absorbed Glass Mat - All Yuasa YTX & YTZ, GS GTX, Odyssey DryCell, East Penn (Harley) batteries are of this
type. It means that no liquid electrolyte is present as it has all been absorbed into the fi breglass mats that are fi tted
between & are in contact with the lead plates. Mounting position is usually relatively upright, but the technology allows it
to be positioned on it’s side or permanently tilted up to a 90 degree angle.
MF - A term used by Yuasa to indentify their powersport AGM battery range (YTX & YTZ types). The maintenance free
term refers to electrolyte maintenance only. There are many companies that manufacture identical copies of Yuasa
batteries. Companies that are licenced to use this symbol will display it on their batteries.
Not to be confused with Maintenance Free explanation below. *
VRLA - Valve Regulating Lead-Acid battery - A sealed battery that has release valves for excess pressure created by
over charging. All sealed batteries have pressure regulating valves, but the type of battery referred to here usually has
electrolyte in liquid form. Mounting position is upright.
GEL - A sealed battery which has electrolyte in GEL form. The electrolyte remains between & in contact with the plates
and the slow fl ow rate of GEL allows the battery to be tilted. Mounting position is usually upright or close to vertical.
* Maintenance Free Batteries - Do not exist in rechargeable form. The only maintenance free battery is a disposable
battery. Any battery that requires recharging and / or maintenance charging during storage cannot be termed as maintenance
free. The maintenance free term refers to electrolyte maintenance only. Once electrolyte is added to a ‘sealed’
battery and the caps are fi tted at the factory or by the dealer (in case of batteries that are delivered with acid packs), no
further electrolyte maintenance is required.
1 : Can the vehicle’s charging system recharge a deeply discharged battery after jump starting?
A vehicle’s charging system has been designed to supply power to the electrical system at a voltage not exceeding
14.5V, very much like a standard battery charger. For this reason a vehicle’s charging system cannot deliver suffi cient
charge to effectively reverse sulfation, even if the battery is only partially sulfated. It is likely that a battery is always going to
present starting problems and it will be doomed to a short life if not properly desulfted and fully recharged.
2 : The larger the battery the higher the current rating of the charger to correctly maintain the battery.
To maintain a battery without causing damage or loss of electrolyte, voltage is the critical factor, not current. Once
the battery is fully charged it requires a few milli-amps to overcome its own resistance (which causes self-discharge).
Connected devices such as an alarm, trip computer etc. may add to the current draw, but it should still remain in the low
milli-amp range.
3 : Any “maintenance” charger will do; they all maintain batteries just as well as the next.
First this fact: A battery receiving a maintenance voltage lower than recommended will suffer low level sulfation build up
over a period of time that will result in a shorter service life.
There are a number of smart chargers on the market with a controlled maintenance mode. Many automatic smart
chargers, especially those designed long before AGM batteries became popular, are set not to overcharge fi ller cap / wet
cell batteries that require a lower maintenance charge voltage setting than AGM. That is why standard smart chargers
manufacturers tend to set maintenance voltage at 13,2V.
Per the manufacturer specifi cations of sealed AGM batteries (including MF motorcycle type) the minimum maintenance
voltage is13,5V to keep an AGM battery at 100% charge. All TecMate chargers are set to correctly maintain AGM and
fi ller cap batteries.
4 : Just add the acid to a new battery and it is ready to go !
NOT A GOOD IDEA. Such a battery will only ever deliver 70 to 80% of its capacity which is fi ne initially, but soon after
(within months) you will experience starting problems and the battery will fail sooner than expected.
10
BATTERY CHARGERS - TESTERS - DIAGNOSTIC TOOLS
WHY? Once a fi ller cap / wet cell battery has been fi lled with acid and placed directly in the vehicle the fi rst ‘action’ the
battery sees is a very high starting current. Lead plates will have to pass current through partially activated areas which
will cause mechanical damage. In AGM batteries the acid absorbs into the fi ber glass mat separators between the plates.
If the acid is concentrated in the top part of the separator mats the lead plates in contact with the upper areas will have to
deliver most of the starting current.
BEFORE being installed in the vehicle a new fi ller cap / wet cell battery should be fi lled with clean battery acid (AGM “MF”
sealed motorcycle batteries are dleivered with a battery acid pack), and left to stand for at least 30 minutes (the larger the
battery the longer it should stand) and then be charged with an initializing charger such as OptiMate PRO-S, PRO2 or
PRO4-S that include cell balancing (equalization charging) in their charging method.
5 : Factory activated AGM batteries need no charging and are always good to go.
Even though good quality factory activated AGMm batteries have been designed to remain full charged for up to 12
months, ALL batteries self discharge faster in high temperature conditions (above 95°F / 35°C) that is typical for sealed
shipping containers, non ventilated warehouses where batteries are stored before they are shipped out the dealer or
customer. The more the battery discharges the more lead sulfate is created.
Ideally stored batteries should be maintained at full charge or at least periodically recharged to remain 100% effective, or
at minimum completely recharged before installation with an OptiMate so that any sulfate buildup can be removed.
6 : Once a battery is fully charged it should not be charged again until the voltage drops below a certain level.
Lead-acid batteries last longest if maintained at the fully charged level, especially when not in use.
So, the key to how long it lasts mostly depends on how the battery is treated when it is not used. A fully charged battery
will generally maintain an adequate charge for a month, if it is not to warm and if no external current draining devices are
connected, or if the current draw due to vehicle alarm, computer etc. is normal.
However, it is recommended that the battery of any vehicle fi tted with an alarm, computer etc., and left to stand for a long
period of time should be supported by a good maintenance charger.
Batteries have a fi nite life. If a charger allows the battery to ‘cycle between discharged and fully charged, it reduces the
overall life of the battery. Some smart chargers provide only a very low current (as low as 10mA) which is often insuffi cient
to cope with parasitic loads (alarms, aged wiring, fl ashing light, bike computer) in modern vehicles. Some smart chargers
will only revert from maintenance to high current charging once the voltage has reduced to below 12,5V, or even 12,2V in
some cases. At 12,5V a sealed AGM/VRLA (including MF type) battery is only at 60% charge! Imagine if you want to go
riding just then?
The OptiMate provides current at 13,6V for 30 minutes in maintenance mode, then during the following 30 minutes
checks whether the battery can maintain its charge. This period is followed in turn by the next 30 minute period during
which charging is again offered to the battery. This cycle ensures that the current drawn by an alarm, computer and/or
the parasitic current loss through aged wiring will never cause a good battery to drop below 95% of full charge.
7 : Can any TecMate charger initialize a new battery?
TecMate chargers recommended for battery initializing are:
Professional level chargers:
30 minutes: BatteryMate 60-3 or BatteryMate 150-9
1 hour: OptiMate PRO-S
2- 3 hours: OptiMate PRO4-S
6 -12 hours: OptiMate PRO2 (the smaller the battery the shorter the initializing period).
Any OptiMate charger can be used for initializing if no other options exist, but to get the most out of the battery use the
chargers recommended above.
8 : Can any TecMate charger maintain a battery stored in or out a vehicle?
TecMate chargers such as OptiMate, OptiMate PRO, AccuMate, AccuMate PRO provide long term battery maintenance
until the battery is disconnected. BatteryMate professional level shop chargers will maintain the battery until the set timer
expires.
In a consistently high temperature environment (above 86°F / 30°C) the level of the electrolyte in fi ller cap batteries should
be regularly checked and topped up, and sealed batteries should be checked for signs of a loss of electrolyte (these are
typically condensation on the battery or within the vehicle’s battery compartment, or a bubbling or hissing noise).
For temperatures below 86°F / 30°C all batteries can be left connected, but again, the electrolyte level in fi ller cap
batteries should be periodically checked and topped up with distilled water if necessary.
OptiMate battery chargers offer better long term maintenance - See OptiMate facts on page 5.
1 – Checks Battery Voltage – Your battery’s ‘rest’ voltage is an indication of
battery health.
2 – Checks Battery Starting Power – A reading in the red zone indicates a
problem !
3 – Checks Vehicle Charging System – Is the charging system causing the
problem?
Includes mounts for on road testing !
