NUTs & bOLTs 04 Side Blind Zone Alert System Introduced in 2008 on a couple of Cadillac and Buick models, gM’s driver aid known as the Side Blind Zone Alert* system is spreading to more vehicles —including the redesigned 2010 Buick LaCrosse sedan. Side Blind Zone Alert uses radar sensors on both sides of the vehicle (mounted behind the rear fascia) to scan a 150-degree field of view within a 3.5-meter range. Alternating radar beams sweep the NUTS & BOLTS TECH FOCUS: adjacent traffic lanes to “look” for other cars. Vehicles entering one of seven zones identified by the system will illuminate an LED symbol visible to the driver, such as on the outside rearview mirror. The system is designed to ignore stationary objects such as fire hydrants or parked cars. Some vehicles complement the Side Blind Zone Alert system with Lane Departure Warning. It’s a camera-based lane detection system that warns drivers of inadvertent lane changes. With it, a camera identifies traffic lane markings and provides audible alerts if the driver appears to stray out of the lane. *Before making a lane change, always check the Side Blind Zone Alert display, check the side and inside mirrors, look over your shoulder for vehicles and hazards and start the turn signal. 05 acdelco.com 800.ACDelco
