IMATRONIC | Festival of Electronic Music at ZKM
Ceremony with prize awards, concerts, as well as symposium and
exhibition
The IMATRONIC Festival of ZKM | Institute for Music and Acoustics
(IMA) is the largest festival of electronic music in Germany that
presents and recognizes current new developments.
The focus of this year’s event is the awarding of the renowned
Giga-Hertz Prize and the Walter-Fink Prize of ZKM.
The combination of piano and electronic music is a mark of
distinction on the international landscape for ZKM | Institute for
Music and Acoustics. This becomes especially visible in the series
Piano+, which premiers central positions in contemporary piano
composition.
A special emphasis is given with the presentation of Iannis Xenakis
– a symposium, as well as a concert evening in the context of
Piano+, are dedicated to this visionary composer.
The Giga-Hertz-Prize for electronic music – given by the
EXPERIMENTALSTUDIO des SWR and ZKM | Institute for Music and
Acoustics – is unique among music prizes in Germany in its thematic
orientation.
The Giga-Hertz Main Prize this year goes to the composer and
conductor Pierre Boulez. With his live electronic works
“…explosante fixe…,“ ”Répons,” ”Dialogue de l’ombre double,” and
”Anthèmes II” he set ground-breaking impulses in the last 40 years
of music-historical developments. Of epochal significance is his
advancement of the appreciation for the musical space and the new
assignment of musicians in today’s concert practice, through the
influence of electronics.
The jury, consisting of Peter Weibel (Director ZKM | Karlsruhe), Ludger
Brümmer (Head ZKM | Institute for Music and Acoustics), Detlef
Heusinger (Head EXPERIMENTALSTUDIO des SWR), Björn Gottstein
(musicologist and journalist), Rainer Pöllmann (musicologist and
journalist), especially recognized the pioneer work that Boulez achieved
in the genre of electronic music.
In honor of Boulez, on this evening three of his compositions will be
performed, reflecting the diversity of his oeuvre: a purely instrumental
work, an instrumental work with live electronics, and an acousmatic
composition.
Due to the numerous talents, especially among the younger generation of
composers, this year’s jury decided to award more prizes than in
previous years, in a special gesture of support to new composers. The
Giga-Hertz Supporting Prizes for 2011 go to:
Aaron Einbond (USA), Madjid Tahriri (Iran), Anthony Tan (Canada), Eric
The Walter-Fink-Prize of the ZKM for dance, electroacoustic music and
media, which is sponsored by the music patron Walter Fink, enables new
conceptions and their realizations at ZKM. The Walter-Fink-Prize this
year goes to the Canadian duo Mireille Leblanc and Åke Parmerud.
In a public ceremony, the prizes will be awarded by renowned
personalities from the cultural and political sectors. The prize winner
concerts honor the prize winners of 2011 and present premiers by last
year’s prize winners, for example the interactive dance performance of
the young Berlin artists Pipo Tafel and Daniel Berwanger as well as new
electroacoustic compositions for the ZKM_Klangdom by Orestis
Karamanlis and Robert Normandeau.
The awards ceremony will be heralded by an afternoon concert by the
EXPERIMENTALSTUDIO des SWR with compositions for instruments
and live electronics Detlef Heusinger, André Richard, and Mark André.
In four concerts the pianist Catherine Vickers is curator of the concert
series Piano+, presenting central positions in contemporary piano
compositions that blow open the borders of the instrument and expand it
by medial, theatrical, or electroacoustic elements. The individpremièrel
concerts set points of special interest and perspectives. The opening
night will begin with audiovispremièrel compositions by Spassov,
Messmer, and Beil. Along with the three central pianists of the festival –
Catherine Vickers, Rei Nakamura, and Sebastian Berweck – the
excellent trombonist Mike Svoboda will perform as a guest in this concert.
The concert part to follow, performed by the pianist Maki Namekawa, will
be characterized by the aspect of the mechanical in works by Conlon
Nancarrow, the minimalist Phillip Glass, and a participative work by
Ludger Brümmer.
This year again, Piano+ presents uncommon premieres that expand the
canon of the piano. Along with two works by Iannis Xenakis, Rei
Nakamura will premiere compositions by Martin Iddon (with the midigrand
piano) and pure-data actionist Johannes Kreidler. The pianist
Sebastian Berweck, a specialist in the connection between electronics
and piano, presents a program with compositional highlights by
Finnendahl, Poppe, Marcoll, and Tutschku.
In the context of Piano+, a concert is dedicated to Iannis Xenakis, the
visionary who worked between mathematics, architecture, and music:
rarely performed piano pieces such as “Evryali,” “Six Chansons,” “Mists,”
and “À.r. (hommage á Ravel)” as well as “Dikhthas” for piano and violin
will juxtapose electroacoustic compositions. A two-day symposium with
Xenakis specialists focuses on the future of his electronic compositions
under the aspects of performance practices and their importance for
contemporary algorithmic composition.
