HHLA CONTAINER TERMINAL BURCHARDKAI
ALL SIGNS POINT
TO THE FUTURE
From the very beginning Burchardkai was programmed
for the future. It was here that the age of the container
began in the Port of Hamburg in 1968: The fi rst straddle
carriers (van carriers) in the world went into operation
here. HHLA Container Terminal Burchardkai (CTB) was a
pioneer in locating containers in storage by satellite, and
many innovations for gantry cranes. Today 25 container container
cranes load and discharge the freight of over 5,000 ships
annually, handling approximately one third of the whole
container volume in the Port of Hamburg. Since 2004
parallel to normal operations a considerable extension and
modernization programme has been underway that will
increase productivity, performance capability and capacity
of the 1.4-hectare facility, step by step to a new level;
technical innovations such as the tandem gantry crane
and area-intensive block storage included.
