Dear Readers,
Editorial
after eight years of continued growth, and the
highlight of moving into our new state-of-the
art headquarters in Poettelsdorf, the year
2005 can be regarded as a milestone in our
company’s history of success.
With the changing color of the leaves and the
first snowfall of autumn, the year 2005 is
coming to an end. For Seal Maker, it is not the
time to enjoy the year’s success by leisurely

SML-System Software 3.1
• General
The modifications and changes in the new SML System Software
Version 3.1 targets improved seal design, cutting tools, and user
friendliness. Also contained in the new software is a preview of several
features, which are still being developed, and will be available as
an additional upgrade later.
• Material Selection
The complete range of materials, in all dimensions, in conjunction with
the valid price list has been integrated into the new software.
• New Seal Profiles
The new seal profiles have also been integrated into the new software.
• Extra Upgrade-Service:
In order to make it easier to change to the new software version 3.1, Seal
Maker will replace old-type cutting tools by the new models at low cost!

In accordance with our 2005 motto, “A brighter
future ahead“, we have started early with planning
our priorities for the fiscal year 2006. It is
already clear that it will be another very exciting
year. Our intention to get well settled in the
markets of the USA, India and South Eastern
Asia, and the continuous new development of
materials and machines, we will also keep an
eye on our organization-related core targets
such as high quality, service, and social competence.
At Seal Maker the quality concerns do not end
with the installation of our machines, but is
also an integral part of our on-going service. In
order to improve customer support, in spite of
rapid growth, we have set goals for 2006 to
streamline our administrative structure, implement
improved communication, and offer additional
service to our customers.
A high priority will be the introduction of our
new materials into the market and increase

CNC-Machine Department
The CNC machine department is the centerpiece for the concept,
design, and assembly of SML-lathes, as well as for the development
of the accompanying SML software. The concept of the SML machines
relies to a certain extent on well proven machine components like
chip suction, cutting tools, chip cutter, and the PC hardware. Another
integral part of the system is the proprietary components developed
by Seal Maker, such as the system software, and the clamping jaws.
We maintain rigorous high quality standards on our machines, by
combining our excellent products developed in-house coupled with
the highest quality standard products we can purchase. The high
quality of our equipment, combined with the cost-effective production,
results in an outstanding price-performance ratio. Consequently,
the price leadership in the international market makes the investment
much easier for our customers, and contributes to our expansion.
Besides development and production, this department is also
responsible for machine shipping, installation, maintenance and
repair in the workshops of our customers, and for the training of our
customers’ personnel.
The training on the SML machines can be in our customers facilities,
or in the Seal Maker factory in Poettelsdorf, Austria. In our experience
the training in our factory is more effective, because here the trainees
can concentrate exclusively on their training without daily business
distractions. Usually the training in Austria ends with a visit to a winegrower’s
house with all the good stuff they have to offer. In addition,
the casual atmosphere not only strengthens the personal relationships,
but also gives a unique opportunity to intensify the technical
understanding by being surrounded by our well-trained technical staff.

Quality Control
Ernst Pendl / CNC – Software Development SML
A short portrait: Born on 11th October 1965 in Eisenstadt (Austria), attended the technical college
(mechanical engineering), and has been with Seal Maker from the very beginning. At the beginning he
worked on the CNC lathe, and later on his knowledge and his keenness made him hold training courses
in our customers’ facilities, and finally he has concentrated on the software development. This
development work is the most challenging, exciting, and satisfying work for Ernst.
Languages: German, English. Hobbies: To ride his motocross bike, to sail in his own boat on the lake
Neusiedl, and to blow the horn as a member of the “Müllendorf”-band.
Favorite food: seafood
Marek Skalski / CNC - Assembling, Development, Service Coordination
A short portrait: Born on 25th August 1978 in Wejherowo, Poland, Marek came to Austria at the age
of 15, in order to attend a technical college (mechanical engineering). Since 2002 he has been a member
of the CNC machine team, starting with assembling, and now he is also responsible for the service
coordinator position. Languages: Polish, German, English
Hobbies: To race his Audi A3 to lake Neusiedl to catch predatory fish.
Thomas Kucher / CNC - Installation and Training
A short portrait: Born on 10th Sept. 1980 in Eisenstadt, Thomas learned the trade of a tool maker, and
started in our company as a machine operator in 2002. Since 2004 he has been our main trainer for
machine operators – therefore Thomas has spent 80% of the year 2005 abroad, training our customers’
personnel. Languages: German, English
Hobbies: His Suzuki GSX 1200, his private home, and his family with his 2 years old daughter.

Perfect quality and service is a top priority for Seal Maker.
The task for a quality control system is not only to maintain the quality level, but to further develop
and improve the quality standard. Therefore the whole sequence of activities, from order receipt thru
production to invoicing, is integrated in our quality control system. Of special interest, of course, is
the quality control in production.
Personal Responsibilities:
Martin Suess (whom we introduced to our readers in the recent issue of Seal Maker’s World) supervises
our two quality controllers Reinhard Fischer and Günther Cerny, who perform their control jobs
with demanding accuracy, based on their detailed knowledge of the manufacturing process.
Methods:
• AQL – carried out spot checks • General tests for tension strength, swelling,
measuring seal profiles in a profile magnifier
• Documentation of all manufacturing steps, in order to keep all work steps under
control and to find out an eventual failure source.

Christmas Festival
The management thanks all staff members for their outstanding work and
the enthusiasm for their jobs, and invites the staff to the Christmas
festival on 7th December in the �Haydn-Brewery�.

A Seal Maker in the City of American
Steel Makers
All over the world, when someone mentions
steel production in the USA, he thinks at
“Pittsburgh”, the traditional capital of heavy
industry in America since the time of civil war.
Today the weekly steel production in the
Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania) – Youngstown (Ohio)
area ranges around 260.000 tons, which still is
more than 1/8 of the total US production.
During the decades, a tremendous boom
added many more manufacturing companies
to the former straight steel city, and so
Pittsburgh has now the third largest airport in
the USA providing access to every North
American city east of the Mississippi River within
less than 3 hours flight time, Pittsburgh also
is the largest inland port in the United States.
However, the modern Pittsburgh is not the kind
of a big American industrial city, overwhelming
the visitor with its size and complexity.
On the contrary, Pittsburgh is a lovely place,
with many wonderful parks to breathe in the
fresh summer air, or to play amidst the

changing leaves of the fall. All kinds of
neighborhood with so many different cultural
groups are reflecting Pittsburgh's beauty, history
and diversity.
Nevertheless, Pittsburgh still is what it always
has been: a key strategic location for business,
and this, of course, attracted many immigrants
and also foreign investment into the area.
Naturally, there is a direct link between international
diversity and the broader economic development
agenda of the region.
The fact that today more than 300 foreignowned
companies from 26 different countries in
the Pittsburgh area employ over 40.000 people
has a lot to do with the immigration from all over
the world. In the nineteenth and first half of the
twentieth centuries, immigrants from Europe
fuelled the Industrial Age.
Since the 1970s, the region has seen an influx
of people from Russia and Eastern Europe,
from East and South Asia and – more recently
but to a lesser extent – from Central and South
America.
Since, Pittsburgh is a center of industrial production
in the USA – Shouldn’t there be a company
using the Seal Maker technology?
Pittsburgh is a nice place, offering a good quality
of life – Shouldn’t this be attractive for an
Austrian emigrant?
Oh yes, sure, there is one: Harald Kofler, our
good old friend, who owns a successful seal
production company in Pittsburgh, the American
High Performance Seals, Inc.
Harald, born in Austria (close to the location of
the Seal Maker factory) went to the USA in
1994, after having been in the Austrian,
German, British and Italian seal market for
several years.

Harald Kofler on his “charming” Indian
After a few months of working himself into the
US seal business he got the chance to take
over a small seal company in Pittsburgh with
2 old seal production machines.
Harald has always been a fast decision maker,
and he was sure this would be a once-in-alifetime
opportunity for him, and so he decided
to stay in Pittsburgh and to use his entrepreneurial
skill to manage this company
towards a full success. And he became successful,
nearly as rapidly as he had taken the
decision to stay in the USA.
I remember when I met Harald in 1995, just
one year later, and asked him whether it would
have been very difficult to bring his company
up, and he just gave the dry comment: „Not
really, as I know what a seal is.”
Now, 10 years later, Harald has added 3 more
machines – Seal Maker machines, of course.
The very first Seal Maker machine which was
exported went to Harald’s company. The latest
Seal Maker machine set up in his workshop
was started up in November 2005.
„Harald, aren’t you one of the best known
immigrants in Pittsburgh, coming from such a
small country like Austria?”
„No, not at all”, he answered, „the best known
man from a small country here comes from
Ireland, Dan Rooney, who owns the Pittsburgh
Steelers football team. Nothing can beat the
attraction of American football here in Pittsburgh,
not even the Seal Maker seals!”
Yes, Harald has kept his typical manner of
giving dry comments, but he has changed a
little his German accent. Now we can hear that
he uses English every day throughout the
years, even his accent when speaking his
mother’s tongue has got adapted a little to his
new homeland.
„Harald, how do you see the development of
your company for the coming years?”
„Excellent”, said Harald, „in 2001 the steel producers
have only used a reported 77% of their
capacity, now they run slightly above 90%. This
has a hell of an impact on the whole industrial
structure here, and business is going well.
This economical background, combined with
the Seal Maker technology we have developed
together to a certain part, will be successful in
the coming years, too.”
Yes. Harald had quite some impact on the
diversification of seal profiles in the Seal Maker
software a couple of years ago, when he insisted
in getting special profiles programmed
which he needed for the American mining
companies.
These profiles have become an integral part of
the software in the meantime, and are successfully
used by many Seal Maker customers
world wide.
That’s it – a good cooperation has always been
the major background for being successful,
and this refers to both Harald’s company, and
also to the Seal Maker factory.
„Now, after 11 years in the USA, do you feel
more like being an American, or Austrian?”
„Neither nor”, was his comment, „now I ride
both a BMW bike, and a charming replica of an
Indian bike. Both ways are good to enjoy life, so
I combine the American and the European way
as much as I can.”

„Well, I found out that – like business can be
fun – fun can be turned into business. Just

Yes, Harald runs a second manufacturing
company now, besides his seal business. He
was so unhappy with the motor cycle shelters
he found in the market, that he decided to
build himself a better one, which is easy to
fold and unfold, and which does not touch the
hot engine parts.
Other bikers liked this shelter, also, and so
Harald started production.

„Great, Harald, so you are established in two
totally different sectors of industry now, which
have nothing in common.”
„Oh, they have a lot in common”, is Harald’s
comment, „it’s the intelligent design which
counts, just alike the Seal Maker software!”
