MODERN LOG YARDS – SUCCESS
CRITERIA PUT TO TEST
Many improvements have taken place in development of high end
plants for log processing. Nowadays a perfect interaction of
modern technology and measurement techniques is essential for
efficient log yards.
One or other may smile when remembering the
beginnings of industrial saw mill technology: it
seems so long ago that only band and gang saws
were most modern technology every saw mill
owner wanted to have. In the meantime the
change from a manually operated handicraft
enterprise to a high performance industrial
company has taken place in many saw mills. But
what are the demands on a log yard for its sufficiency
in the future?
INTERDEPENDENCE. At the end of the 70ies the
first great change towards industrial production
lines was made with the introduction of the profi-
ling chipper canter technique: In-feed without
prior log sorting was not possible any longer. The
saw mill employees started to use electronically
aided processes for log and timber selection. The
interdependence of mechanic sorting processes
and electronic selection mechanisms has been
intensified over the years and is now a benchmark
for the optimum solution of a modern log
yard.
HIGH SPEED. Springer sorting plants qualify up to
LOG PROCESSING with most modern methods never the less stays
fascinating. Only some decades ago mechanics was the centre challenge
but nowadays a combination of sophisticated technical standards and
most accurate electronic measuring equipment is essential. That is the
Springer Group’s formula of success: the company has always maintained
its core competence, the mechanisation of log yards and sorting
plants, and also invested a lot of energy into the development of state
of the art technical concepts. Together with its subsidiary MiCTROTEC,
Springer is also able to deliver entire plant controls as well as highly
efficient log measuring systems. Customers like Klenk at Volgesheim
(France) appreciate this comprehensive supply.
EDITORIAL
Dear Readers,
®
SPRINGER
THE WOODMECHANISING COMPANY
The hurricanes “Paula“ and “Emma“,
which swept over Europe in February 2008
and caused grave destruction, could not
have occurred at a less appropriate moment
for the entire timber processing industry.
Millions of solid cubic meters of tumbled
down wood are either still located in
Europe’s forests or have been transported
to different saw mills for processing. The
tense domestic market situation and the
low timber demand of big overseas export
markets, are causing serious adverse
effects throughout the timber industry.
Springer customers know that they are one
step ahead in log processing. Reliability,
especially for efficient processing of
damaged wood, requires optimum technics
and highly accurate measurement
technology. Springer Group has never lost
sight of its core competences over the last
decades and is therefore dedicated to
intense development of newest
mechanisation of log yards. The log-experts
behind our products are presented in this
newsletter.
Of course we have also prepared a lot of
other topics for you. I hope to have
included points of interest for all and
wish you enjoyable reading.
NEWS ON INTERNA-
TIONAL PROJECTS
HEGGENSTALLER.
In the 3rd quarter of 2008 the construction
works for Heggenstaller’s sawmill in Lauterbach
will begin. Springer will install 4 timber
plants and one log plant with a planned
yearly capacity of 1.2 million solid cubic
metres.
The entire scanner- and measurement technology,
as well as the sorting plant control
system, is delivered by the Springer subsidiary
MiCROTEC.
LADENBURGER.
At the moment the mounting of the sawmill
in-feed system and the erection of two timber
plants and one planer line conveyor is
under way at Ladenburger in Kerkingen (Ger.).
Production start up is planned for June 2008.
Since February the log yard has been partially
sorting. The entire scanner- and measuring
technology, as well as the sorting plant control
system, is also delivered by MiCROTEC.
SIB EXPORTLES.
The Siberian company SIB Exportles in Nova
Igirma/Irkutzk has ordered three Springer
timber plants; two pre sorting plants and
one sequencing sorting plant. Installation
will start in early summer of 2008, planned
yearly capacity is about 0.8 million solid cubic
metres.
›
Springer log yards:
Advantage by high productivity
continuation of page 1
provides the operating company with highest productivity”,
CEO Gero Springer states. MiCROTEC measurement
systems and the capacities of Springer mechanisation
together result in an unbeatable combination: electronics
and mechanics are adjusted precisely to one another and
are installed at the same time: that means a minimum time
frame and therefore immense competition advantage for
our customers.
NEW TECHNOLOGY. To achieve high running smoothness at
high-performance synthetic sorting line carriers have been
developed. Double boxing-ejection arms with multiple
stocking allow a high ejection precision of logs into the
respective boxes. The applied measurement systems become
more and more precise and their operation at the beginning
of the production line is improved constantly. “The
transparent log is no longer science fiction but a vision that
will be reality in all major saw mills in some years from
now”, says Mag. Gero Springer, CEO of Springer Group.
“Springer convinces with robust construction and high performance
plants. In combination with measurement systems
by MiCROTEC, we opted for a state of the art high performance
plant.”
Rolf Simonsson, Technical Manager,
Fiskarheden Trävaru Ab (Sweden)
›
HIGH DURABILITY. Dimensioning of plant components has
always been adjusted to high durability demands and easy
maintainability. Springer customers particularly appreciate
the robust construction of the plants: “Some of the high
end plants have been in shift operation since 1980 and
still offer highest operational functionality”, Gero Springer
proudly states.
RAPID MODIFICATION. Never the less, adaptation to latest
technical standards is often necessary. A modular arrangement
of pre-installed sorting plants, just like the new models,
makes quick replacement of existing sorting conveyors
possible. Entire sorting lines with a length of up to
300m may be exchanged within a few working days. The
electronic control system is mounted in parallel operation
and adapted with high availability in a few working days.
Springer and MiCROTEC work closer together than ever before.
The corporate start-up experiences, made on many log
yards over the years, takes a centre role in this successful
cooperation.
Log processing
on a time line
1900 manually
1950 2 logs/min
1960 8-10 logs/min
1980 15-20 logs/min 2 layer measurement
2000 30 logs/min camera measurement
2008 50 logs/min laser scanner,
INNOVATION. A Springer assigned survey on maintenance
and costs of operation has shown that cost savings concerning
mechanic parts may be gained by reorganisation of
oscillating movement in continuous operations. Therefore
linkages and sprockets will be substituted wherever reasonable
and possible. First concepts in this direction have
been designed and will be installed at Heggenstaller in
Lauterbach (Ger.). In the near future Springer customers
will have the great benefit of low maintenance costs and
high capacity owing to this new development.
ADVANTAGE THROUGH HIGH PRODUCTIVITY is Springer’s new advertising motto.
Adverts show our customers’ products, such as logs, timber and glued timber. High
quality produced with Springer plants. Over the last few months Springer Group has
also adapted its corporate design to match its state of the art products. First of all
the “Springer Green” has become cooler and lighter and is supported by two shades
of grey which represent the technical competences of the company. Springer also
sets new patterns in industrial design: the first attempt – the timber laminating
press Newton 1400 – catches the eye not only by well engineered operability but
also by its stunning design. You can also enjoy our new internet appearance at
Daniela Abele (picture) and Martin Roland directly overlook the whole log yard. Inside the high tech control tower of Ladenburger timber factory
LADENBURGER TIMBER FACTORY
FUTURE
STARTS NOW
A modern saw mill needs wits and geniality – as, for example,
at the Ladenburger timber factory. At Kerkingen one of the most
modern saw mills throughout Europe is developing.
› “Beam me up, Scotty”, Captain Kirk’s
famous command in the cult TV
series Star Trek, is one of the most cited
sentences in motion picture history.
And be sure to feel “beamed”
into the series when visiting the heart
of the Ladenburger timber factory.
The control tower of the Springer Maschinenfabrik
AG log yard: like the
bridge of a star ship.
A galvanised iron staircase leads up
to the “bridge”, and its rear side is
entirely made of glass. Martin Roland
controls the back part of the log yard.
Everything out of direct sight is
shown on screens above and beside
him. To his right and left hand control
panels with numerous red, grey and
green push buttons and turnable
knobs; with a joystick in each of his
hands he controls the fully automatic
operation. By the way: the 360° revolving
seat he uses is called “Enterprise”.
LIKE A SCIENCE FICTION FILM.
Johannes Kroiß, technical production
manager, clarifies the production process.
The so called “high-lifters”,
huge single-arm plants, lift the logs
which are piled towards the road to
Ellwangen and put them on the con-
“We have set high standards
for ourselves.”
Johannes Kroiß, technical
production manager,
Ladenburger timber factory
veyor. After visual inspection the logs
are de-barked and scanned automatically.
Nearly like in a science fiction
film. Due to special cameras, the 3D
MiCROTEC laser scan works in split
seconds and down to the tenth of a
millimetre, feed speed: 130 metres
per minute. That means up to 30 logs
may be registered and sorted by
length, diameter and quality in 60
seconds. The several hundred meter
long conveyor transports them further
and drops them left or right in the
computer designated box. The Springer
Maschinenfabrik AG log yard has
88 such concrete boxes. That means
88 different measures and qualities
are sorted. When a box is full the logs
are stored at a log stacking site before
they are processed in the saw mill.
But the Landenburger timber factory
is not yet this far. “We are still in the
testing phase”, says Kroiß.
COMPLETION. Last July, at the so called
“Ipfmesse”, the ground-breaking
ceremony for one of the largest building
sites in Ostalbkreis took place.
Since then construction labourers
have worked day and night, as well as
weekends, comments Stefan Landenburger,
one of the three CEOs. The
log yard is nearly completed, only the
production process has to be tuned
and optimised. In the 120 metre long
sawing hall and in the 140 metre
long sorting hall construction works
for 2 high end timber plants of Springer
Maschinenfabrik AG continue. By
June the Ladenburger timber factory
would like to stop works at the saw
mill Aufhausen and start a two shift
production at Kerkingen to increase
production from 450,000 solid cubic
metres to 1.0 million. The sawn wood
comes from the forests in a perimeter
of about 100 kilometres around the
site and is solely softwood like spruce,
fir or pine.
FUTURE PROSPECTS. The company’s
all over investment in one of the most
modern sawmills in Europe amounts
to about 40 million Euros and gives
about 550 employees future prospects.
Further 50 to 70 jobs are
planned at Kerkingen. “Our employment
situation is at the limit”, says
Stefan Ladenburger. But, as in any
other industrial sector, the wood processing
industry is searching for trained
employees. Ladenburger states
Ladenburger timber factory
Scope of delivery
by Springer Group:
• Log yard
• Sawmill in-feed system with
two in-feeds
• 2 timber sorting plants ( 1 x basic
product sorting with 10 horizontal
single layer trays, 1 x side product
sorting with 15 layer levels)
• Package transport
• Planer line
that traditional sawing with its back
breaking work is history; today the job
description is quite different. “We
need smart people with brains.” A
wood processing mechanic has to
operate computers and complex
plants – and he has good perspectives,
technical production manager
Johannes Kroiß adds, to take courses
to become master craftsman or even
to attend university.
Moreover, the people in Kerkingen
will appreciate their new neighbours
in the future. As Kroiß explains: the
massive construction of the new buildings
will prevent high noise levels
during various processing steps. Furthermore,
forklifts and all other company-owned
vehicles are equipped
with signal lamps instead of audio
signals. Ladenburger: “we have set
highest standards for ourselves.” VEH
PIONEERING SPIRIT catches Dimitri Chulkov, Olga Fedorova, Alina Krobath and Heimo Huspek
(from left to right) who manage the Russian market which, over the last few months, has
developed into one of the most promising future markets for Springer. As from 1st of April
2008, Olga Fedorova and Dimitri Chulkov locally coordinate the group’s commercial operations
in Russia at Derbeneyskaja in the centre of Moscow and have furthermore overtaken the representation
of MiCROTEC. Heimo Huspek has always represented a vital link for the Springer
Group between Austria and Russia and is proud of the development. With his expert knowledge
of Russian culture and language he has been in charge of market negotiations for 19 over
years. His experience on the sector has led to the compilation of a German-Russian Dictionary
for the sawmill industry. Alina Krobath began supporting our team in Friesach in 2007. She
also speaks Russian fluently.
MOSCOW – RUSSIA’S
ECONOMIC CENTRE
With the current Russian economic policy,
Moscow has gained considerable importance
for the timber industry.
Since its founding in 1147 the city of
Moscow has been the centre of
Russian national culture. Valuable
historic monuments like the Kreml,
the renown Saint Basil’s Cathedral or
the Novodevichy Convent show the
impressive architectural and historical
significance of the city. Its cultural
importance is clearly demonstrated by
examples such as the Tretyakov
gallery, the Pushkin Museum of Fine
Arts and the Bolshoi Theatre. Today,
Moscow is a metropolis with more
than 10 Million inhabitants, forming,
more than ever before, the commercial,
political and academic centre of
Russia.
TIMBER IMPORTS. At the moment a
third of all processed wood products
sold nationally in Russia are imported.
export customs on raw logs have been
increased. Russia’s Premier Viktor
Subkov even wants to go further and
invest about 18 billion USD in the
national wood industry by 2011. After
all, Russia is the country with the highest
amount of wood all over the world
– a raw material which is gaining
increasing importance also in Russia.
By investment in new sawmills and
modernisation of old plants, Russia
shows awareness of the high value of
wood as a national economic factor.
FAIR LOCATION. For these reasons
Moscow has made its name as fair
location for the suppliers of sawmills
and wood processing companies. The
Lesdrevmash, a yearly fair in October,
as well as the wood processing fair
Woodex at the end of the year have
become fixed appointments throughout
the industry.
