Violence and Nature in Two Orchestral Works by Alban Berg and Hans Werner Henze – Symphonic Opera for the Concert Hall
Similar to the Fragments from “Wozzeck” from a decade earlier, in Five Symphonic Pieces from the Opera “Lulu” Berg compiled a considerable
amount of music from his second opera, based on Frank Wedekind’s dramas Erdgeist (Earth Spirit) and Die Büchse der Pandora
(Pandora’s Box), and arranged it for orchestra with solo voice. The work’s core, both in musical and numerical terms, is the third movement,
Lied der Lulu (Song of Lulu), in which the title heroine describes herself as a sort of female Don Juan. Nonetheless, a few people around her
– Dr. Schön, Alwa, Schigolch, and Countess Geschwitz – are ruined not by the insatiable sexual appetite of the femme fatale, but rather by
the projection of their own inner fantasies in a restrictive middle-class world: “If men have killed on my behalf, my value is undiminished”,
as Lulu sings. Alban Berg would seem to have agreed, building the musical and dramatic centre of the work from her twelve-tone row.
Permutations to Lulu’s row allow the composer to construct the identifying music for his title character’s various lovers.
The orchestral piece Appassionatamente plus by Hans Werner Henze also owes its existence to an opera: The composer wrote his Das verratene
Meer (The Sea Betrayed), after the novel by Yukio Mishima (Gogo no eiko in Japanese) between 1986 and 1989, revising the score in
2003. The composer had already taken purely instrumental interludes from the original version of the opera, uniting them in 1994 in his
orchestral fantasy Appassionatamente. Parallel with his 2003 revision to the opera itself, Henze wrote an expanded version of its derivative,
now called Appassionatamente plus. As in Alban Berg’s suite from Lulu, which Henze himself has conducted, and as in a kaleidoscope that
has been rearranged, the essential figures and dramatic events from the opera remain present, even in music that is strictly instrumental.
Stefan Soltesz
Was born in Hungary and moved as a child to Vienna. He studied conducting with Hans Swarowsky at the Vienna Academy of Music, where
he also had training in composition and piano. His artistic career was launched in 1971, as Kapellmeister at the Theater an der Wien, followed
by engagements as répétiteur and conductor at the Vienna State Opera (1973-1983) and as guest conductor at the Opera House in Graz
(1979-1981). During three editions of the Salzburg Festival, in 1978, 1979 and 1983, he worked as a musical assistant to Karl Böhm, Christoph
von Dohnányi and Herbert von Karajan.
Stefan Soltesz held the position of regular conductor at the Hamburg State Opera (1983-1985) and at the German Opera Berlin (1985-1997).
He served as general music director of the State Theatre of Brunswick from 1988-1993 and as chief conductor of the Flemish Opera in
Antwerp and Ghent from 1992-1997. Since 1997, he has served as the general music director of the Essener Philharmoniker and as director
of the Aalto Theatre.
Stefan Soltesz is a frequent guest conductor at the Vienna State Opera and at the major opera houses of Germany, for instance in Berlin,
Dresden, Hamburg, Leipzig, Munich, and Stuttgart. He also appears at the Netherlands Opera Amsterdam, the Bilbao Opera, the Opéra de
Paris, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, the Teatro Bellini in Catania, the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, the Washington and
San Francisco opera houses, the Zürich Opera, and at festivals in Montpellier, Aix-en-Provence and Savonlinna (Finland). Stefan Soltesz has
led broadcast and concert performances in Berlin, Dresden, Genoa, Hanover, Hamburg, Milan, Munich, Paris, Rome, Turin, and Vienna. His
discography includes operas by Giacomo Puccini, Giuseppe Gazzaniga and Alexander von Zemlinsky, as well as arias and Lieder with Grace
Bumbry, Lucia Popp and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. Stefan Soltesz was conferred the honorary title “Citizen of the Ruhr District” in 2009, in
appreciation of his service to the Essen metropolitan area. In 2010, the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia gave him the title Professor
honoris causa.
Description:
Hans Werner Henze: Requiem (Edition Artists in Conversation Vol. 3) - Professional and Private Lives
Program
Music: Hans Werner Henze (* 1926): Requiem
Neun geistliche Konzerte for Piano solo, Trumpet concertante and large Chamber Orchestra (1990-92) [67:24 Min.]
(Live recording, June 12, 2010 - Philharmonie Essen, Germany)
Voice Recordings: Mirjam Wiesemann in conversation with Hans Werner Henze in his house in Marino (2010) and with Henze’s
friend and assistant Michael Kerstan [Duration of the conversations ca. 96 minutes]
The Requiem from the early 1990s, a late, evening-length work by Hans Werner Henze, marked a significant turning point for
its composer. The score is dedicated to the memory of Michael Vyner, the one-time director of the London Sinfonietta. Death is,
for Henze, a fact of life. “Paradise is here, or should be here, not hereafter, when nothing happens” is his image of a better world.
That the cycle closes with a hymn to life is thus only logical. The aural wonder of this composition, very much of this world, rests
in its richness of colours and sounds, resembling a magical garden filled with longing and redemption, one apparently not of this
world, at least not for listeners who believe in religious redemption.
In addition to a recording of the Requiem, this set includes nearly hundred minutes of conversations, covering both professional
and private lives, between Mirjam Wiesemann and Hans Werner Henze, as well as Michael Kerstan, recorded at the house of
Hans Werner Henze in Marino, near Rome, in August 2010.
GREA REAT PIANISTS IANISTS - VOL OLUME UME 2
Alexander Brailowsky (piano) with the Boston Symphony Orchestra,
Serge Koussevitsky (conductor); Shura Cherkassky (piano);
Rudolf Serkin (piano) with the Philharmonic-Symphony Orchestra
Of New York, Dimitri Mitropoulos (conductor)
This second release in Guild’s series of Historic ‘Three Great Pianists’ recordings
features live performances from Alexander Brailowsky, Shura Cherkassky and
Rudolf Serkin, recorded between 1945 and 1958, and intriguingly including two
performance of Liszt’s virtuoso ‘Don Giovanni’ Fantasy played by Cherkassky.
Throughout this CD, here is pianism of a consistently high quality, from three
masters of the keyboard from the latter half of the 20th-century. The conductors -
Serge Koussevitsky in the Mozart, and Dmitri Mitropoulos in the Richard Strauss
- were themselves amongst the greatest to hold senior positions with two great
American orchestras, lending artistry to this release which is quite unique.
OSCANINI - CHRISTMAS
DAY & F
NBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Arturo Toscanini
& FAREWELL
AREWELL CONCERTS ONCERTS
This double album constitutes one of the most important issues of Toscanini’s
recorded legacy in that it combines in these two CDs the first ever broadcast
concert the Maestro gave with the NBC Symphony Orchestra, an orchestra
founded expressly for him in 1937 in New York, and the last - his final appearance
with the Orchestra in April 1954. A great deal of interest therefore attaches to these
two events, combined for the first time as a commercially issued package - a true
‘hail and farewell’ (Ave Atque Vale) to the art of the conductor whom many
reagard as the greatest of all.
RUDOLF UDOLF GANZ ANZ AS PIANIST IANIST AND
AND CONDUCTOR ONDUCTOR
Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra conducted by Rudolph Ganz
Rudolph Ganz (piano)
Rudolf Ganz (1876-1972) was one of the most remarkable Swiss musicians of the
20th-century, as pianist, teacher and conductor. From his earliest days he knew,
performed and recorded music by the latest composers before World War I, and
when he went to America he was conductor of the New York Philharmonic and
Chicago Symphony Orchestras for many years. He continued to give concerts in
his 80s as a pianist, and the range of his achievements is considerable. This new
CD is a magnificent tribute to a great musician, friend of Bartok, Korngold and
Busoni - Ravel dedicated one of his most famous piano works to Ganz - and
conductor who gave the world premieres of music by Copland and Elliott Carter,
among many others. On this CD, we have recordings from piano rolls of 1913, and
a very rare performance of Grieg’s ‘Holberg Suite’ recorded in the USA in the late
1940s. There are rare photographs and the booklet notes are
fascinatingly detailed. A most important record.
THE GOLDEN AGE OF LIGHT MUSIC
Confetti
The word ‘confetti’ describes small pieces of
paper, of various shapes and colours, often
thrown by guests at weddings. In musical
terms it can equally apply to an assortment of
pieces in different styles, conveying a variety
of moods and emotions. In other words,
almost a haphazard collection of tunes with no
particular theme, except perhaps that they are
all a little different. During the compilation of
Guild Light Music CDs we sometimes come
across enjoyable pieces of music which
simply don’t fit in with particular projects,
and once more it is time to dust off some
precious discs patiently awaiting rediscovery.
Actually ‘rediscovery’ may not be entirely
accurate as some have never previously been
available commercially and, for most of the
others, this is their first appearance on CD, so
it is unlikely that the majority
of music-lovers will have
heard them before. GLCD 5175
From The Vintage Vaults
The title of this CD could almost apply to
every release in Guild’s “Golden Age of
Light Music” series so far, because our
mission is to make available once again those
recordings which have been neglected for far
too long, and are no longer available from
other sources. Famous composers of
symphonies, marches, jazz and just about
everything in-between can be found in this
varied selection, mainly from the inter-war
years, which surely qualifies for the adjective
‘eclectic’. If anyone still needs convincing
that the general term ‘Light Music’ covers a
wide variety of styles and performances, then
surely the proof is here on this CD. The
featured composers range from Sir Edward
Elgar and Vaughan Williams, to Ernst
Fischer, Reginald King and John Philip
Sousa.
PIANO MUSIC BY AMY BEACH VOL. 3 - THE MATURE YEARS
KIRSTEN JOHNSON (PIANO)
This third disc of Amy Beach’s complete piano music, performed by
Kirsten Johnson, represents her compositional output from 1907 to 1924.
Amy Beach (American, 1867-1944) is one of the great woman composers of
all time. Including the masterful Prelude and Fugue, op. 81, the concert
piece Fantasia Fugata, op. 87, and many beguiling piano miniatures, this is
a disc not to miss. Farewell Autumn and Dancing Leaves, op. 102, are
world première recordings, as are also Lotus Isles (unpublished
manuscript) and Blackbird Hills, op. 83. These forgotten pieces by this
world-renowned composer are now available for the first time. The piano
talents of Kirsten Johnson bring this music to life with technical brilliance,
sympathetic interpretation and musical depth.
PROSPERO’S ISLE - CHAMBER MUSIC BY JAMES FRANCIS BROWN
TAMÁS ANDRÁS, JACK LIEBECK (VIOLINS), SARAH-JANE BRADLEY (VIOLA),
GEMMA ROSEFIELD (CELLO), NICOLA EIMER, KATYA APEKISHEVA (PIANOS)
James Francis Brown has established a reputation as a composer of exciting,
visionary and emotionally rewarding music. His Piano Quartet has become a
popular addition to the repertoire - as testified by the Birmingham Post
review: “Hushed, close-harmony string passages danced and fizzed, while climaxes
broke with torrential force and gleaming string-tone. The great sweep up to Brown’s
sonorous finish was superbly paced and delivered with breathtaking verve.
Enthusiastic applause greeted what would prove to be the high point of the evening.”
The Shakespeare-inspired Prospero’s Isle, described as ‘lyrically suave’ by
Paul Driver in The Times and a ‘unique voice [with] a grand elegiac quality’ by
The Strad, forms the dramatic centre piece of this CD - qualities which are
equally abundant in the Violin Sonata and the String Trio.
This recording reflects the composer’s close association with some of today’s
most talented and celebrated artists on the international scene - most of
whom presented the premieres of these works: Katya Apekisheva, Gemma
Rosefield, Nicola Eimer, Tamás András, Sarah-Jane
Bradley and Classical Brit Award winner Jack Liebeck, deliver stunning performances in music which
makes many emotional and technical demands. This is a tour de force of contemporary virtuosity and
lyrical intensity. GMCD 7354
THE MUSICAL COLOURS OF THE GUITAR
JENS STIBAL (GUITAR)
Stibal is one of the most admired of the younger generation of guitarists
from Germany, and on this outstanding new recording he presents a varied
programme of masterpieces for the classical guitar, founded upon the
recent Spanish school but including popular works by other composers
who felt compelled to write for the instrument. The result is a magnificent
CD, exceptionally well recorded, of virtuoso and sensitive performances of
familiar and unfamiliar pieces, has each item chosen and guaranteed to
impress the discerning listener. The title of the disc - Colours of the Guitar
- encapsulates the nature of the attractive music which fills this very
desirable record admirably.
Thomas Albertus Irnberger
Music from Vienna, the metropolis of the Danube Monarchy, has never been so diverse and characterized by such different currents
than at the time of the turn of the last century. This recording traces an arc from Romanian and Hungarian folk dances by
Bartók and Brahms, via waltzes by Johann Strauss Jr., Richard Strauss’ Rosenkavalier Waltz, a song from Des Knaben
Wunderhorn by Gustav Mahler and pieces by Lehár, Goldmark and Janáček to evergreens such as Schön Rosmarin or Liebesleid
by Fritz Kreisler. On this CD, Thomas Albertus Irnberger’s brisk performance with an assured sense of style demonstrates how difficult
it is to draw the line between serious music, salon music and entertainment music.
For the great fan of colours Francis Poulenc, having a predilection for wind instruments is not
surprising. Hence, as usual, it is life that triumphs in Francis Poulenc’s music. Its first merit
is to be human. It belongs to no school, does not obey the rules of a system, but in which
we can individually see ourselves.
The Complete Chamber Music works with winds, demonstrates that Saint-
Saëns is the origin of the wordlwide famous “french winds tradition”. In a
century mostly inspired by german romantic orchestral pieces, Saint-Saëns
considered the wind instruments on the same level as violin and piano. In the
evening of his life, aged eighty-five, Saint-Saëns came back to wind sonatas.
Although being very classical, the three 1921 sonatas announce the “Groupe
des Six” neo-classicism, and particularly Poulenc. In that respect, even at the
very end of his life, Saint-Saëns stands as an innovator.
“frankly, I know of no better performance, on historical
International Record Review
“This series continues to be most impressive. Vermeulen
must be the ideal Schubert player, and the instrument, a
superbly restored Streicher und Sohn of 1826, has an
astonishing range of dynamics form a powerful
fortissimo to an especially beautiful pianissimo, and it
has a wonderful clarity of articulation. “
Early Music Review
Vilain XIIII’s six-octave straight-strung Streicher has
an intimate sound, precise articulation and a
transparent bass register and is therefore perfectly
suited to the music of the Viennese early Ro-
mantics Beethoven and Schubert, the latter in
particular. The recording of the complete solo
piano works of Franz Schubert on this first-class
period instrument is a project that originated with
perfect logic from the cycle of concerts devoted to
Schubert’s works that Jan Vermeulen has given for
the Cultural Centre Maasmechelen since 2003 and
from the increasing realisation of the particular
historical qualities of the instrument.
Hartmut Haenchen's musical integrity has
assured him a place in the forefront of
musical life. Brought up in the former East
Germany, he has seen his career reborn in
the new Europe, where his breadth of
experience and depth of understanding
have won respect, while audiences have
warmed to the humanity of his
interpretations. He is particularly renowned
and respected for his interpretations of
Richard Strauss, Wagner and Mahler.
Despite the severe restrictions of the old
East German regime, Hartmut Haenchen
was given special permission to work with
the West’s finest ensembles, including the
Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. Continual
interference by the authorities, however, led
to severe setbacks in his career and he
subsequently made his home in the
Netherlands, where a new public
recognised his genius, and where
eventually he became Music Director of
both the Netherlands Philharmonic and the
Netherlands Opera. In October 2008 he was
awarded the Federal Cross of Merit of the
German Republic, in recognition of his
outstanding contribution to music and the
arts.
Noszferatu are on tour in November to promote their debut album ‘Drempel’. Concerts include Birmingham
Conservatoire 15.11.10; London The Forge (London Jazz Festival) 16.11.10; Cafe Oto, London 19.11.10;
and Huddersfield Festival 21.11.10 (a special collaboration with Frederic Rzewski and Howard Skempton).
Noszferatu formed in 2001. They were originally called Nosferatu but early on faced a legal threat of great ferocity
from a goth rock band of the same name and so added the z.
The four members of Noszferatu met at Durham University when they were students in the early 1990s. As well as
being heavily involved in the contemporary classical scene they also often collaborate in other musical genres such as
jazz, pop, physical theatre and tango.
‘Let op! drempels’ means ‘watch out for the ramp’ in Dutch.
This lively recording by the ‘collective’ Noszferatu represents a cross-section of repertoire by some of the UK’s best
experimental composers. From the haunting minimalism of Howard Skempton’s In Tandem and Andrew Poppy’s How the
Lee’s Game.
Zuzana Lapčíková / Marija Panna
přečistá/ Purest Virgin Mary
Advent and Christmas songs from
Moravia
Zuzana Lapčíková – voice, cimbaloms; Josef Fečo – double-bass, cimbalom; Rostislav Fraš – saxophone;
Ivan Herák – violin, viola; Ondrej Krajňák – piano; Kamil Slezák – percussion
The Advent and Christmas songs from the workshop of Zuzana Lapčíková reflect perhaps all her musical
positions known to date (as a singer and cimbalom player with a penchant for seeking inspiration in jazz
and across genres). Yet the Christmas high-spiritedness is frequently supplemented by intimate chamber
mood, humility and solemnity. Besides several sprightly “catchy” pieces, she often soberly makes use of
the superlative co-players of her jazz quintet for tranquil duets. Her singing is the golden thread
accompanying us throughout – a singing sharing pure joy, elsewhere humility before the Creator and
evoking the silent tenderness with which the Virgin Mary looks upon the Infant. Few know as much about
Moravian carols as Zuzana Lapčíková does; even fewer are able to retell them with such understanding
and feeling. Christmas joy, however, is the culmination of four weeks of Advent contemplation and
expectation. The Advent songs selected for this recording from Baroque hymn-books wondrously fuse
“artful creation” with the magic poetics of folk, verbally handed-down songs. You will surely become fond
of some of them at first hearing; with others you will discover more and more beautiful details at each
listen – and quite possibly, you will not want to cast the CD aside even after Christmas had come and
gone…
Antonín Reichenauer – Concertos (SU 4035-2)
Sergio Azzolini – Baroque bassoon, Xenie Löffler – Baroque oboe, Lenka Torgersen – Baroque violin
Collegium 1704, Artistic Director: Václav Luks (period instruments)
Unlike the copiously preserved sacred music, instrumental works by Czech composers in the Prague of the
first third of the 18th century are as scarce as hen’s teeth. The twenty or so instrumental pieces by
Antonín Reichenauer are among the most significant. Reichenauer was a musician in Count Morzin’s
chapel, in which he assumed the role of in-house composer after Johann Friedrich Fasch. The ensemble’s
superb quality is documented by the Count’s regular contacts with Antonio Vivaldi, whom he engaged as
his “maestro di musica in Italia”. Among other pieces, Vivaldi dedicated to Morzin his Opus 8, containing
the celebrated The Four Seasons. The rarity of Reichenauer’s virtuoso concertos is emphasised by their
being extremely challenging in technical terms, which serves as evidence of the skills of the chapel’s
members – even Vivaldi himself lauded them! Many a contemporary musician would find these concertos
extremely difficult. This, however, is certainly not the case of the “wizard” Sergio Azzolini and the other
soloists featured on this recording. Together with Collegium 1704, an ensemble that gained renown with
albums of Jan Dismas Zelenka’s paramount compositions, they perform Reichenauer’s concertos with a
vivacity and energy this music requires.
Antonín Reichenauer’s Baroque concertos – Vivaldi himself would have been proud.
František Jiránek – Concertos and Sinfonias (SU 4039-2)
Sergio Azzolini – Baroque bassoon, Marina Katarzhnova – violin, Jana Semerádová – flauto traverso
Collegium Marianum, Artistic Director: Jana Semerádová (period instruments)
Ever newer chapters from the history of the bountiful musical life of Baroque Prague are still being
discovered today. Until recently, František Jiránek, a composer and violinist of the Prague-based Count
Morzin’s chapel, had only been known to a select few. Now, for the first time, all lovers of old music are
afforded the opportunity to listen to an exquisite collection of his virtuoso concertos. At first hearing, we
can recognise inspiration by Vivaldi (combined with distinct elements of Czech musicality) – after all,
Jiránek was sent by his employer to study in Venice, where most likely Antonio Vivaldi himself, at the time
Morzin’s “maestro di musica in Italia”, was his teacher. Later on, Jiránek worked in Dresden, where his
further creation was gradually formed by the Galant style and the ascending Classicism. The world
premiere of Jiránek’s virtuoso concertos has been undertaken by superlative soloists headed by the
“wizard” bassoonist Sergio Azzolini. With full engagement, together with Collegium Marianum under the
flautist Jana Semerádová, they have breathed new life into Jiránek, which this rediscovered composer so
richly deserves.
Virtuoso concertos by Antonio Vivaldi’s Czech pupil revived in the 21st century
SUPRAPHON New Releases November 2010
“He was an amazing musician. There can be very few conductors who can manage stylistically the
breadth that he did. But I think my favourite contribution from him was bringing Czech music to the
West.” This is the opera star Renée Fleming’s glowing description of Sir Charles Mackerras, whose long
and incredibly fruitful conducting career and life ended at the age of 84 this July. Indeed, over the past
few decades Czech music has not had a more vigorous advocate and champion in the world, nor a
greater fan and connoisseur. “I am a great fan of Dvořák’s music because it always seemed to me that,
apart from Mozart, Dvořák is the greatest composer... He wrote these symphonies, he wrote tone poems,
he wrote operas, he wrote chamber music, he wrote songs, he wrote religious music, everything... He’s
just the greatest composer, except Mozart perhaps.” Throughout the music world, Mackerras’s name is
synonymous with Czech music itself – Janáček in particular. Sir Charles fatefully encountered Janáček
during the very first days of his studies with Václav Talich in Prague. Subsequently, he introduced Janáček
to the wider world. “Nobody needs me to say that Mozart and Handel are great composers, whereas they
did need somebody to say that Janáček is a great composer too, and that’s what I did. If I have achieved
anything in my life, it is the propagation of Janáček.” Supraphon had the truly great honour of cooperating
with this superlative conductor until the very end. The albums featuring the Czech Philharmonic
Orchestra in particular have captured Mackerras’s vision of a wide scale of works by the four greatest
Czech composers. The list of awards these recordings have received is long... Let us then instead spend
our time listening to his musical legacy on these CDs, which Supraphon with respect and love for Sir
Charles presents to all those who would like to recollect this great man.
Josef Suk / Asrael
Czech Philharmonic Orchestra,
Sir Charles Mackerras
Josef Suk began writing the funeral symphony Asrael to commemorate his teacher and father-in-law
Antonín Dvořák. During the course of work, however, Fate dealt him another crushing blow: Asrael, the
Angel of Death, took away Suk’s wife and Dvořák’s daughter Otilie. The symphony is a story of a suffering
whose strength seems simply unendurable, yet also a story of its overcoming, seeking solace and hope.
Sir Charles Mackerras’s live recording of Asrael originated on a Good Friday, 6 April 2007, one hundred
years after the symphony’s premiere. The young Australian conductor had first heard about Asrael some
sixty years previously from Suk’s close friend, Václav Talich. In later years, Mackerras confessed that he
perceived the work in a completely different light after his daughter had died. Sir Charles conducted Suk’s
Asrael during one of his last performances with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. It is also his last
previously unreleased recording with this orchestra.
Mstislav Rostropovich
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)
Suites for Cello, BWV 1007-1012, complete
Today, Bach’s suites form part of the repertoire of every distinguished cellist, and many of them have
recorded the complete cycle. Yet when sixty years ago the twenty-four-year-old Mstislav Rostropovich
(1927–2007) first performed all the suites in public, it was a trailblazing act, linking up to the previous
endeavour of Pablo Casals. When this live recording was made in 1955 at the Prague Spring festival,
Rostropovich was 28 years of age. He astounded the audience with his youthful verve and surprising
artistic maturity. At the festival Rostropovich met his lifelong love, Galina Vishnevskaya, whom upon
returning to Moscow he married after several days of acquaintance. When in 1991 the cellist made a
complete recording of the Bach suites in France, he was 64. Hence, all the more precious is this live
recording from the Czech Radio archives, which waited more than half a century for its release. As a lover
and connoisseur of wine, Rostropovich would certainly agree that some wines – and some recordings too
– acquire a richer taste and a higher value over time.
A sensational, newly discovered 1955 Rostropovich recording of the Bach suites.
Sviatoslav Richter
Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827)
Piano Sonatas Nos 7, 12 & 23 “Appassionata“
The Russian Masters archive series brings another gem from Sviatoslav Richter’s abundant Prague legacy.
The recording of the three Beethoven sonatas was made at the Rudolfinum on 1 November 1959 within a
single evening. One year later, Richter included these sonatas in his celebrated debut recitals at Carnegie
Hall. Owing to his legendary aversion to frequently performed works, during his lifetime he would only
play fewer than half of Beethoven’s sonatas on a concert stage. However, Richter did not hesitate to
resurrect even the scarcely performed works and was able to breathe new life into the early sonatas, such
as Op. 10 No. 3 and Op. 26, in which lovely classicist passages mingle with astonishing invention and
energy. Richter’s take on the “Appassionata” is a milestone in the history of interpretational art. He plays
the exposed passages at a seemingly hazardously rapid tempo, without keeping anything in reserve. The
performance is passionate in a ravishing manner, yet not lacking in premeditation and a sense of
structure. Nothing here is just for the sake of effect. Perhaps it would be apt to paraphrase one of
Beethoven’s statements: There are many great pianists, but only one Sviatoslav Richter.
Beethoven performed lightly and rapidly, with passion and premeditation, simply peerless – that’s
Sviatoslav Richter.
Martina Janková – soprano
Gérard Wyss – piano
The gracious young soprano Martina Janková has established a firm position amidst fierce international
competition. Since 1998 she has been an Oper Zürich soloist and has featured in productions by
conductors of such renown as Gardiner, Harnoncourt, Fedoseyev, Herreweghe, Rattle, etc. With Sir John
Eliot Gardiner, she has recorded, among other things, Bach’s cantatas. Yet Martina Janková keeps
returning to the emotionally rich realm of the song.
“Voyage” is not merely a song recital. It is a journey from the child’s wonderment at the colourfulness of
the world through amorous enthralment to self-knowledge and finally (in Dvořák’s Biblical Songs) also to
that which transcends us. A voyage through life in images, where every word and every tone bears a
meaning of its own. In the songs, Martina Janková lets personal stories revive and peers into the
innermost corners of the soul.
Martina Janková’s “Voyage” – a journey into the mysteries of the soul and an invitation to an encounter.
Josef Suk / Dvořák – Violin Concerto, Romance; Suk – Fantasy, Fairy Tale*
Josef Suk – violin, Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, Václav Neumann
*first ever released
A living legend, Josef Suk is rightly considered the most distinguished representative of the 20th-century
Czech violin school. His peerless, rich and beautiful tone has been captured on countless other albums. In
the year in which Suk celebrated his eightieth birthday Supraphon released his splendid new recording,
featuring some of the chamber works of the artist’s grandfather and great-grandfather, respectively –
Josef Suk and Antonín Dvořák (SU 3976-2). Suk has taken great care to preserve the artistic legacy of his
two celebrated ancestors throughout his life. In a sensitively remastered form, this CD brings the
legendary recordings of Dvořák’s Concerto in A minor and Suk’s Fantasy from the golden era of the soloist
and Neumann’s Czech Philharmonic Orchestra alike. Not even Joseph Joachim, the most famous violinist
among Dvořák’s contemporaries, ventured to perform the concerto. Yet the recording that originated
almost one hundred years later demonstrates that the work ultimately found the most competent hands
and heart it could possibly find.
Every work of art is exposed to the inexorable test of time. In the case of the majority of composers,
precious few works enjoy enduring popularity. Yet in this respect Dvořák is one of the glorious
exceptions. When it comes to his 15 string quartets alone, more than one third of them are still an
integral part of the repertoire of numerous contemporary ensembles. All the mature opuses – starting
with the “Slavonic” Quartet in E flat major (written for the famous Florentine Quartet) through the most
celebrated, the “American”, to the final opuses 106 and 105, whose musical language reflects the
composer’s return home from overseas – have been repeatedly explored and performed. The Panocha
Quartet, whose exceptional qualities have for over four decades been acclaimed by audiences in four
continents, have devoted to Czech quartet creation and Dvořák in particular with great care. This
selection from the complete Dvořák works features the most beautiful quartet opuses and is a must-have
for all fans of this genre.
The “American” quartet and other Dvořák gems – beautiful and seminal.
Jitka Hosprová – viola /Andrea Postacchini 1856/
In the past, the viola was often considered the poor relation to the violin or cello, for which composers
wrote solo pieces, notably Bach with his solo partitas. Only the 20th century, to a certain extent,
redeemed the debt to this splendid instrument. This CD featuring Jitka Hosprová presents the best
compositions written for solo viola in the 20th century in the homeland of Dvořák, Smetana and Janáček.
We would be hard-pressed indeed to find another violist whose repertoire is so dominated by 20th- and
21st-century works. Jitka Hosprová has included on this collection two compositionally significant Czech
works (the dialogical Suite by Ladislav Vycpálek, who studied composition with Vítězslav Novák, and the
Sonata by Josef Suk’s pupil Pavel Bořkovec) alongside pieces by two representatives of the currently older
generation of composers (Jan Klusák, Jaroslav Smolka). Jitka Hosprová’s viola reflects all the colours of
human emotions; it is by turns sad, mysterious and vehemently passionate, velvety and raw. Owing to
this buoyancy, the CD far surpasses the dimensions of a mere music anthology; the compositions sound
like personal statements – and it is easy to fall in love with the exquisite timbre of Jitka Hosprová’s viola.
Beethoven – Symphonies (Complete)
Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, conductor: Paul Kletzki
Ingeborg Wenglor – soprano, Annelies Burmeister – alto, Martin Ritzmann – tenor, Rolf
Kühne – bass, Prague Philharmonic Choir / choir master: Josef Veselka (Symphony No. 9)
Beethoven’s symphonies are among the cornerstones of the symphonic repertoire. They bear witness to
the composer’s remarkable journey from airy Classicism to the peerless idiom he had developed on the
threshold of the Romantic epoch. Those who have taken up the challenge to record the complete cycle
include the Polish-born conductor Paul Kletzki, who gained great renown after the war, primarily in
America. He was the principal conductor of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra for a year and
after his debut in Philadelphia went on to conduct the leading American and European orchestras. This
remarkable complete recording of Beethoven’s symphonies was made during Kletzki’s performances with
the Czech Philharmonic in 1967, during the orchestra’s golden age under the chief conductor Karel Ančerl.
This gem of the Supraphon archives thoroughly deserves the current re-edition in remastered form owing
to its freshness and expressive depth.
Beethoven / String Trios
Leonid Kogan – violin, Rudolf Barshai – viola, Mstislav Rostropovich – cello
This CD, the latest title within the acclaimed Russian Masters series, presents three towering Russian
musicians. At a superb 1960 Prague Spring festival concert, Kogan, Barshai and Rostropovich performed
together three of Beethoven’s four string trios. These pieces are seldom played in combination since they
require from the musicians a rare combination of virtuosity and humility, as well as mutual respect
between the chamber players. There is no doubt as to the sheer virtuosity of these musicians; at their
previous concerts at that year’s Prague Spring all three of them had presented themselves as superlative
soloists (at the festival, Rostropovich also performed in Czech premiere Shostakovich’s first cello
concerto). Leonid Kogan – one of the most distinguished representatives of the Russian violin school; the
violist Rudolf Barshai – co-founder of the celebrated Borodin Quartet and later on a renowned conductor;
Mstislav Rostropovich – simply a phenomenal cellist... Three soloists whose encounter on a single stage
was a veritable feast for chamber-music lovers and one of the apices of the Prague Spring. Now, half a
century later, you too can savour this remarkable concert.
Three legends on one stage – a precious encounter you can again enjoy, half a century on!
The Greatest Romantic Violin Concertos
Václav Hudeček – violin
Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra
Prague Symphony Orchestra
Václav Smetáček, Jiří Bělohlávek
Recording locations:
Rudolfinum, Prague, October, 1974 (CD1 / 1–3), July, 1980 (CD1 / 4–6), June, 1976 (CD2 / 4–6)
TJ Praga Studio, Prague, February, 1979 (CD2 / 1–3)
Václav Hudeček ranks among the most gifted violinists, not only on a Czech but also an international
scale, to have graced a 20th-century concert stage. Following his debut in London (at the tender age of
15!) with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, he appeared at the most prestigious concert venues
(Carnegie Hall, Suntory Hall, Osaka Festival Hall, Sydney Opera) with world-renowned orchestras (Berliner
Philharmoniker, Cleveland Symphony Orchestra, NHK Philharmonic Orchestra, Gewandhaus Leipzig, etc.).
David Oistrakh, who immediately recognised Hudeček’s exceptional talent, was his teacher and mentor,
and on several albums accompanied him as a conductor too. Hudeček made the recordings of the four
greatest Romantic violin concertos for Supraphon (between the ages of 22 and 28) with Jiří Bělohlávek
and Václav Smetáček. They bear witness to the remarkable musicality and technical skill of the Czech
representative of the Russian violin school and many years later have lost none of their power and should
occupy a place in the collections of all lovers of the violin’s passionate tone.
The four most beautiful Romantic concertos rendered in the rich timbres of Václav Hudeček’s violin.
