455 Bronze Calendar Medal, 1717, dedicated by<br />

Andrew Buckley as a New Year’s gift to Thomas<br />

Lord Parker, First Earl of Macclesfield, 39mm. Fine<br />

The medal was dedicated a year before Parker became Lord<br />

Chancellor, a position he held until 1725 when he resigned in<br />

disgrace. He was impeached, tried <strong>and</strong> unanimously convicted<br />

by the House of Lords, on charges of corruption <strong>and</strong> taking<br />

bribes which it is believed would equal £11m today. Despite this<br />

he was a pall bearer at the funeral of Sir Isaac Newton in 1727.<br />

456 Dassier’s Kings <strong>and</strong> Queens, Complete Set of<br />

Bronze <strong>Medals</strong> (35), 1731, including the memorial<br />

medal to George II, making this the second striking,<br />

each 41mm, in bespoke wooden case (Eimer 526).<br />

Frederick Charles Ashley Ogilvy, Captain, Royal Navy.<br />

The Ogilvy Medal was instituted in 1912 in memory of<br />

Captain Frederick Charles Ashley Ogilvy, R.N., who died<br />

18 th December 1909 from typhoid fever while in comm<strong>and</strong><br />

of HMS Natal. It awarded annually at the discretion of<br />

the Admiralty to the Officer who takes the first place in<br />

the examinations to qualify for Lieutenant (TAS). Ogilvy’s<br />

widow, Gertrud Lilian, née Sherbrooke, married the 9 th<br />

Earl of Elgin in 1913.<br />

Whilst the attribution to Alfons Mauquoy seems without<br />

doubt, the medal is not listed in the medallist’s catalogue<br />

raisonée. The Danish Farmer’s Bank was founded by<br />

Hartvig Abrahamsson Gedalia, a saddle maker who traded<br />

bonds <strong>and</strong> shares as a sideline. By 1910 it had become the<br />

largest bank in Sc<strong>and</strong>inavia. But only a year after this<br />

medal was struck the post-World War I economic crisis<br />

pushed the bank to near-failure from which the state was<br />

forced to bail it out.<br />
