MEETING OF MIDWESTERN COUNCIL BOARDS – January 14, 2010 

Regular Executive and Competition Board meeting, Sam’s Ristorante, Rockford IL. 

EXECUTIVE BOARD 

President Cassaro called the meeting to order at 8:06 PM. It was ascertained that a quorum was present. All 

officers were present and clubs were represented as follows: CSCC-Best, Wells; FT-Brozynski, Wheeler; GLSCC- 

Kannard, Schley; LSCC-Karth, Martin; MSCC-Anderson, Krebs; NSSCC-Dudek, Serra; SCSCC-Cromas, Lewis; 

SCCR-P.Green, Rehberg. M(Wheeler) & 2(Kannard) to approve the minutes of the December meeting as 

printed. Pass. 

TREASURER’S REPORT: Year-end ’09 and January ’10 reports were distributed. M(Wheeler) & 2(Lewis) to 

accept the reports as presented. Pass. 

OLD BUSINESS 

� 2010 Schedule Update: One available RA date was up for bidding and the MC reps were outbid. RA 

stated that there will be no club events for 2011 also; Pro and SCCA Natl. events will take up the 

schedule. The Autobahn N. event no club picked up was taken by another group, but that may not 

pan out. Cassaro asked that should a private sponsor show interest in that date if it became available, 

would the Board sanction the event. The GCR doesn’t specifically address the issue; in the Bylaws, 

Art. 13 Section 2 leaves the possibility open. M(Wheeler) & 2(J.Boldt) that an individual be allowed to 

sponsor one MC-sanctioned event at Autobahn N. M(Jackson) & 2(several) to amend motion to 

specify the sponsor. Amendment accepted. Cassaro Enterprises would be the sponsor. Motion 

passed. Cassaro will go for the date if it is available. 

� Facebook Advertising: There have been 956,000 impressions since last Nov. There are 110 members 

listed, and there have been driver school inquiries. 

� Banquet: About 200 reservations have been made. Beverage donations: SCCR-$250, GL-$250, FT- 

$250, SC-$250, NS-$350, LSCC-$250, MSCC-$250. Free race entry donations: FT-1 W-W or AX, SCCR-1 

W-W or AX, LSCC-1 W-W for Apr. 18, NS-1 W-W or AX, CSCC-1 Long Race entry, Cassaro-1 W-W or AX 

at Autobahn N, MSCC-1 W-W or AX or HPDE for Memorial Day weekend, GL-1W-W entry for July 18. 

M(Wheeler) & 2(Martin) to include a free entry for a non-MC-licensed driver for a driver school. Pass. 

� There will be a finance committee meeting on Jan. 20 here at 7:30. 

NEW BUSINESS 

� HSAX Permanent Numbers: Cassaro sent an email to all drivers registered in the system that the 

numbers are now open. 

� Website Update: Cassaro will meet Tues. with the web designer and is looking for input. 

� Driver Schools: Inquiries have been made from potential attendees. Wheeler and Cassaro will tweak 

entry forms and process the information. Harlan will be registrar. Fees will remain the same. NS is 

having its indoor school, and registration for it is on MyAutoEvents. They have 249 entries, and the 

limit is 250. Clubs are welcome to help. Costs incurred are insurance, printing, and others. M(Martin) 

& 2(Wheeler) that the MC give NS $500 to defray expenses, as the event benefits the MC as a whole. 

Pass. 

� Tech Day: Advance Autosports (Wheeler) is offering space to hold it. He will arrange it with Weis.

� Autocross Committee: No news – no meeting date. 

� Race Staff: Committee chair and director are needed. 

� Steward Committee: Next meeting is Feb. 20, 7 PM, Backyard Grill & Bar.. 

� Spec Miata Rule Changes: Wheeler will get them together to present. 

NEW BUSINESS 

� Banshee Formula Car: It is similar to a FF with 1600cc air-cooled VW power plant. It could run in Unr. 

with the large formula group for this season and then be evaluated. 

� Formula Committee: May look at Honda-powered cars in FF if they appear. Information is on Forums. 

Hoosier Tire offered to drivers in regions running CFF a good deal to stay with their tires.

BIG WHEEL RACE 

Rules and Regulations 

1. Store bought Big Wheels are allowed but home built entries are encouraged. 

2. Propulsion of the Big Wheel must be by a direct drive to the front wheel. No gears allowed! 

3. Self propelled (human powered). 

4. Pedal to wheel ratio is free. 

5. The front drive wheel must be larger then the rear wheels. 

6. Minimums of three wheels are required. 

7. Brakes are permitted but not required. 

8. Safety gear that the racer MUST WEAR includes the following: 

a. Long sleeve shirt or jacket 

b. Full length pants 

c. Bike helmet (or better) 

d. Elbow pads 

e. Knee pads 

f. Gloves 

g. Tennis shoes (or better). No open toe/heel shoes allowed. 

9. Good Sportsmanship is required at all times. 

10. Each Big Wheel entry must go through tech and be deemed safe before it will be permitted to compete. 

Each club is encouraged to submit an entry for the Big Wheel Race; multiple entries are welcome from each club! The race itself will be 

a standing start from the start/finish line and conclude at the back gate to the paddock between corner 4 & 5. The start will be an old 

style Le Mans running start with grid position determined by drawing names out of a hat.

Climb a little higher on the tower By Hal Adkins 

I received a nice new cell phone for Christmas, replacing the one I got about four years ago that 

replaced the first one bought in 1994 — and no it was not a bag phone. The new phone works just 

great, but the transition between the first and second phone was not so smooth. 

The phone from 1994 was pretty big but better than previous versions of cell phone technology — 

the walkie-talkie looking gizmos that themselves were a vast improvement over the bag variety that 

basically started the whole cell phone phenomena. 

I miss bag phones. As they were bulky, people then tended to stay in their cars more when calling as 

compared to now, and so were less likely to carry on a running cell phone conversation on the merits of 

one feminine hygiene product over another while waiting in the order line at Taco Bell. 

My first phone was big enough to perhaps use as a self defense weapon if needed, and I found if you 

held it just right it could possibly pass for a handgun in low light situations. So if confronted by some 

robber/mugger/rapist/TV infomercial type of person, you could maybe bluff your way out of danger by 

waving it madly about and shouting a lot. 

And for everybody who asked, yes it was an old cell phone in my pocket, and yes I was happy to see 

you. 

I got the second phone with the same provider and told them I really wanted to step up to modern 

technology and convenience. I, too, wanted to be able to fumble for a ringing phone in the darkness of 

a movie theater, and accidentally flush that little sucker down the toilet at least once a year. But 

most importantly, I want to be able to call in the accident I just caused by yapping when I should have 

been driving. Sign me up for that nifty little flip phone there. No, I don’t need a camera phone ... well 

yes, that would be handy to have at the accident scene.

I was soon on my way with the new phone, and a more expensive calling plan that included “free” 

minutes every month that rolled over. While toying with the phone, some button was accidentally 

pushed, and the thing started to vibrate. I dropped it on the car floor thinking I was getting an electrical 

shock — but can now understand and appreciate why this feature would get your full attention while 

stuck in the pocket of your jeans when a call comes in. 

When folded up and tucked into its vinyl case, it was no bigger than a medium-sized muffin and likely of 

no use whatsoever as a weapon of self defense like the other one because I am pretty sure waving 

around what could be a muffin of some sort wrapped in vinyl and shouting a lot is not going to scare 

very many people unless they have an unnatural fear of baked goods and upholstery. 

Out of curiosity, I went to the post office and used their mail scale to weigh the phone. That little wonder 

of technology which can allow a person to speak to virtually any place on the planet came in under 3 

ounces. The instruction manual, however, weighed more than 7 ounces. Granted half of the book was 

in a foreign language, which explains why there are so many people speaking some lingo into a cell 

phone that a lot us can’t understand. Obviously and mistakenly, they opened the wrong side of the 

instruction book and now have to phone-talk the language in which they learned how to use it. 

This particular dip into the then-modern technology was rather short lived however. I thought it would 

be a good idea to use the cell more and save a few bucks on the land line. Problem is the wonder of 

communication that would allow me to speak to someone in Zimbabwe, if I knew anyone in Zimbabwe, 

is virtually worthless in the particular cell area where I live. 

Turns out I am in a “dead zone” that is not very well covered by my provider’s cell towers. I contacted 

their main office using my home phone, the one with the big round dial, and told them it was my thought 

that I could better contact people and have a clearer conversation if I climbed one of their towers and 

just shouted. The nice lady in customer service said this was not uncommon and a lot of their 

customers indeed did just that, but there was an additional service charge involved. 

I wondered if I could even call my land line phone sitting next to me at home and whine to myself about 

my cell phone situation. Imagine my surprise when the display on my new cell phone announced that I 

was unavailable. 

My first thought was that I had probably just taken the phone off the hook, so I wouldn’t have to listen 

to myself whine, but then reality set in. The whole system was worthless unless I traveled out of my 

weak cell area to make a call, and I did not see any allowances for travel credit or mileage in the 

contract.

I took the little flip phone back the next day and said it would not work for me. “Yeah, we get that a lot 

from your area,” the girl behind the counter told me in a faraway and scratchy voice. Got my money 

back except for a service charge, even though I told her I’d chickened out halfway up the tower. 

I found another carrier with a lower monthly fee, and a free non-flip phone the size of a candy bar but 

weighed less and had virtually no calories, and although there were less free minutes available per 

month, that was plenty of talk time for me and my needs. And as I am interested in and an expert on 

geography, I would find it very interesting to have a phone friend in Zimbabwe, as it is always nice to 

get to know people in other states. 

Short Thought: Lady at the store said to me, “Have a nice day!” “To late,” I said. “I’ve already watched 

the news and bought gas.”

WANT TO FIND – OLIVER SPECIAL 

A friend steered me to some old KLAXON pages posted on line. In looking at the photos I 

spotted the Oliver Special. 

I worked with Walter Oliver at a small Chicago engineering firm in the early 1970’s. He told me 

about the car and even brought in a newspaper article featuring the special. The car was raced in 

MCSCC events. Walter passed away years ago but his widow remembered the car was sold at a 

yard sale in the Oak Park area. With my vintage race Bugeye in good order and my recent 

retirement I was looking for a new project. 

Do any of the vintage members of MCSCC remember the special and/or if it still exists?
