Soldier, young dad killed
Mitch Tahapeehi expected her
eldest son Te Tahuna to join her in
Kihikihi to help plan her late
husband’s memorial, but instead
she and whanau had to travel to
Palmerston North to retrieve her
dead son’s body yesterday.
Private Te Tahuna Tahapeehi
(21) died after a collision on Monday
morning between his motorcycle
and a car driven by a 20-year-old
woman who was also in the Army.
The crash happened on a public
road outside Linton Army camp
near Palmerston North, where Private
Tahapeehi lived with his partner
Sami Tapara and their fourmonth-old
son Arikirau
Wharepouri.
Private Tahapeehi was to return
to the family home in Kihikihi for
the unveiling of the headstone for
his late father, Tamainupo.
His father and mother had both
served in the Army.
Mrs Tahapeehi says it is hard to
believe what has happened to the
eldest of her four sons.
She says he was ‘mischievous’ as
a youngster and recently became a
proud dad for the first time.
Private Tahapeehi is spoken of
highly by his Army commanders.
He had been a driver at the
Linton base since returning from a
six-month deployment in East
Timor last year — just in time for
his son’s birth.
‘‘The baby came two days after
he got back ... It was like he was the
only man in the world that had a
baby, he couldn’t keep his mouth
shut,’’ Mrs Tahapeehi says.
Te Tahuna is remembered
fondly by former classmates at
Kihikihi Primary, Te Awamutu
Intermediate and Te Awamutu College
(where he excelled in waka
ama).
On leaving College in 2006 he
went straight into the Army —
following in his parents’ footsteps
which was something that he had
always wanted to do.
His commanding officer, Lieutenant
Colonel Rob Krushka, said
Private Tahapeehi was a professional,
well-liked soldier who would
be sorely missed.
From his service in East Timor
he had been awarded the New
Zealand General Service Medal, the
New Zealand Operational Service
Medal, and a Timorese award, the
Timor-Leste Solidarity Medal.
He had been looking forward to
other overseas postings, but also to
looking after his four-year-old son
so his partner could pursue her
Army career too.
Mrs Tahapeehi says her
thoughts go out to the Army woman
involved in the crash that killed her
son.
She says the women, who was
unharmed, was pregnant and she
felt for her and the way she would
be feeling.
‘‘Sometimes these things just
happen.’’ The cause of the crash is
still under investigation.
Shaani’s ANZAC Day speech inspired
BY GRANT JOHNSTON
A feature of recent ANZAC Day
commemorations has been younger
generations honouring their
forebears — and guest speaker at Te
Awamutu’s Dawn and Civic
Services, Shaani Tauroa did that
brilliantly.
Shaani, who is one of four head
students for Te Awamutu College in
2010, told the gatherings about her
grandfather, or koro, Taiaho Eruiti
Riini.
When she said that she was the
same age on ANZAC Day as her
koro had been the day he went off to
Egypt to serve with the 28th Maori
Battalion B Company in World War
II, you could have heard a pin drop.
‘‘Like so many of his generation,
my koro lied about his age so he
could join his two older brothers in
serving their country.
‘‘At one stage he declined a
promotion because he did not want
to outrank his brothers. His two
brothers died in battle.
‘‘It was a difficult experience for
koro. Sadly, none of his grandchildren
met him, but we heard
many stories about hardship and
service, and about his commitment
to uphold the honour of his family
and people.
‘‘Many have made sacrifices like
my koro so that we can enjoy lives
full of opportunity and promise.’’
Commemoration Service. See more ANZAC Day photos on page 3.
Shaani read a verse from her
koro’s favourite song ‘Pearly
Shells’.
After the Civic Commemoration
Service, a number of elderly
attendees stopped to admire the
medals that belonged to Shaani’s
koru, and to congratulate her on
her speech.
FIREFIGHTERS turn fundraisers this Saturday, with Te Awamutu Fire Brigade members carrying out a street collection from
11am-3pm to raise funds for the Leukaemia and Blood Foundation.
Te Awamutu Fire Brigade is again
participating in the annual Firefighter Sky
Tower Challenge next month and will be out
rattling the buckets to raise funds this
Saturday.
On Saturday, May 22, 420 firefighters will
race to the top of Auckland’s iconic Sky
Tower.
In its seventh year, the Firefighter Sky
Tower Challenge is a New Zealand tradition.
The event attracts hundreds of firefighters
from around New Zealand and overseas
who race to the top for the chance to claim
fastest man, fastest woman and fastest team.
Last year’s street collection and fundraising
from the Te Awamutu community
allowed the Brigade to take an amazing
cheque for over $4,000 to present to the
Leukaemia and Blood Foundation and contribute
to the record total of $148,000 raised
by all the participating brigades from all
parts of the country.
Te Awamutu Fire Brigade has a consistent
history of having a good number of
participants. This year is no different and
with training well underway, they have
nine competitors with two competing in the
event for the sixth time and three competing
in the nerve racking first time.
In 2009, 365 New Zealand firefighters and
firefighters from Australia and the US,
raced up 51 flights — or 1,103 Sky Tower
steps — wearing full firefighting kit and
breathing apparatus weighing up to 25kg.
This year it will again be an intense gutbusting
challenge up to the top and to raise
funds for the Leukaemia and Blood Foundation.
The Te Awamutu Fire Brigade is proud
to support the Leukaemia and Blood Foundation
who utilise these funds to contribute
towards patient support for the 10,000 New
Zealanders living with leukaemia,
lymphoma, myeloma or a related blood
condition, services which cost more than
$1,000 a day to provide!
Te Awamutu Fire Brigade will be
collecting money from the community on
Saturday from 11am to 3pm.
They will be walking round most of the
residential streets in the Te Awamutu
township, going door-to-door with the fire
trucks following behind.
The fire trucks will be decked out with
Leukaemia and Blood Foundation posters
and have the beacons and sirens (noncontinuous)
operating to draw attention to
the appeal.
Several Brigade personnel will be
accepting donations for the Foundation in
the town’s main centre along Alexandra
Street.
Any contributions from the collection
will be greatly appreciated by the Brigade
and every cent will be handed over to the
Leukaemia and Blood Foundation which
receives no Government funding, and relies
entirely on fundraising activities and support
and donations of individuals.
Further information is available at
www.firefightersclimb.org.nz or by
phoning Danny Smith of Te Awamutu Fire
Brigade on 07 858 6668(wk) or 871 6195(after
hours).
ANZAC Day remembrance retains
RETURNED services personnel received spontaneous applause from the crowd at Sunday’s Civic
Commemoration Service as they marched from ANZAC Green back to the RSA Clubrooms behind Te
inlay.
Mr Haberfield commended this
ear’s PA system, which he said
as a huge improvement on other
ears.
Mr Haberfield said it was gratifying
to see the ever increasing
numbers turning out for ANZAC
parades and Armistice Day
commemorations on November 11.
He said the services were not
about celebrating war, as some
would claim, but about commemorating
the fallen.
Mr Haberfield read out the
names of local Defence Force personnel
serving overseas — Corporal
Angela Blackwell in East
Timor, Lance Corporal Makarena
Tupaea in East Timor, Leading
Combat System Specialist Stacey
Rasmussen in the Gulf States,
Private Cameron Barrie in
Afghanistan and Lance Corporal
Hohua Subritzky in Afghanistan.
Parade Marshall David Bowler
said 100 veterans marched at the
Dawn Parade and 120 at the Civic
Commemoration Service, including
uniformed personnel currently
serving in the Defence Forces.
Mr Haberfield noted that the
traditional after service function
at St Patrick’s Hall was not held
this year ‘‘for a number of reasons,
the main one being viability’’.
Waipa Mayor Alan Livingston
acknowledged the efforts of Te
Awamutu RSA and supporters. He
made special mention of the First
Health Company (which has a
charter with Te Awamutu) for the
support provided at services like
Sunday’s.
He also thanked Te Awamutu
Community Cadet Unit, under
Captain Richard Thompson, for
their contribution.
‘‘We are here to remember
those who died, so that we and our
children might live,’’ Mayor
Livingston said.
‘‘We are here to honour the
service men and women from the
past to the present.’’
A service staged by
included several
readings.
One was the
reflections of Dan
Curham, a sergeant who
served with the Wellington
Battalion. He was
one of a group of men
ordered to take a
machine gun up to men
who had seized Chunk
Bair.
‘‘We were thin, most of
us, weak with dysentery
and poor nutrition.
‘‘... Turks spotted us
and we were met with a
hail of bullets, we made
perfect targets.
‘‘... Men began falling
around me. they just
dropped. Men I’d been
boys from my hometown.
‘‘... We had been a close
knit group, almost
brothers, but we couldn’t
stop or show sorrow for
the fallen. ..more and
more of us fell.. until I
discovered myself alone,
the one survivor of the 16
who had started out ... I
never saw or heard of my
comrades again..I don’t
even know what happened
to their bodies.
‘‘I have felt their loss
very deeply for the rest of
my life... I didn’t weep
physically, I was not a
weeping chap ... I weep in
my heart.’’
Friday Fright Night
BY WINTEC STUDENT
SAMANTHA PEARSON
There is something
delightfully terrifying at
this year’s Waikato Winter
Show.
‘Friday Fright Night’
is designed with teenagers
and the more
adventurous adults in
mind.
The inaugural event
will be held in the old
barn at the Waikato
Events Centre, which for
many years has lain derelict.
Rumour has it that
the barn is haunted and
that no-one dares venture
there after dark
because of the grisly
wails and spooky moans
that ring out across the
grounds around the time
of the full moon.
Entertainment coordinator
Meg Davies
says as a community
event, part of the Winter
Show’s brief is to cater
widely for the community,
so activities for
youth are important.
“For me, the satisfaction
of organising this
event will come from
seeing young people
enjoying themselves in a
safe, fun and ‘scary’
environment.
‘‘Every day I come to
work to find more gruesome
and disturbing
props filling the office,
which is great because
I’m watching the event
come together before my
eyes - but the real fun
will come on the night.
“We are excited to
have glam-rock band
Rose Petals and Confetti
performing from 8pm -
10pm.
‘‘There will also be a
team of hideous and
frightening ghouls,
ghosts and freaks to
alarm those brave
enough to venture into
the old barn.”
Volunteer and props
manager Faye Cole
CRIMELINE
NIGHTMARE BRIDE: Props manager Faye Cole Baker with one of her many
creations that will terrify the adventurous at ‘Friday Fright Night’.
Baker of Ohaupo has
been working hard making
props for the show.
It has taken
approximately two
months of solid and
inspired work from her.
More volunteers have
also recently come on
board to work on props
and wardrobe.
A ghoul competition
will be held for the most
gruesome costumes and
EXECUTIVE’S VIEWPOINT - April 2010 2010
As a member of the Te Awamutu
Chamber of Commerce Executive I
am very excited about the upcoming
2010 Waipa Networks Business
Awards. The Awards are a fantastic
opportunity for your business to
celebrate its successes in what
has been for many a challenging
business environment. At Gallie
Miles we are already putting together
our entry. We are using it as an
opportunity to review our business
practices and highlight what we are
doing well and also to identify some
of the areas which we can improve
Sustain your business
Reduce, re-use and
recycle – and stay local
There’s been plenty of negative
publicity about the latest in
environmental legislation with
the proposed Emissions Trading
Scheme, to counter this we
suggest it’s time to take stock and
think about what your business
does to positively infl uence
your own social, fi nancial and
immediate environment.
It’s worth remembering that
actually some of the most ecofriendly
options for your business
are good old fashioned sense
– reducing the inputs and waste,
re-using equipment for as long as
viably possible by keeping it well
on. I really encourage all businesses
to enter the Awards. Not only is it
as a good opportunity to take time
to review the great work you do,
but it is an excellent opportunity to
develop and raise your profi le within
your community. Details on how
to enter the Awards can be found
on the Chamber’s website www.
teawamutuchamber.org.nz
It is equally important that as local
residents we do our best to support
our local businesses. Talking to local
retailers this week, it’s clear that
many are feeling the effects of the
upgrade works which are happening
in the main street and also in other
locations around town. The upgrade
works will be worth the disruption
in the long term, but retailers need
our support NOW. If you’re are out
shopping, please, stay local and
keep our community working.
businesses can apply the same
principle – invest in keeping your
essential equipment or knowledge
in top order, for better fi nancial
economic sense is also good
environmental practice.
And in our local environment,
‘stay local’ is another basic mantra
In brief
Business confi dence in Waipa
levels out.
Businesses are expecting ‘more of the same’ with 49%
of those surveyed in March expecting business conditions
to improve and 43% expecting a stable environment.
The number of businesses experiencing diffi culties in
fi nding skilled staff also remained consistent at 11 percent.
Emissions Trading Scheme a new Tax.
The Auckland Chamber is encouraging businesses to email
the Prime Minister and express their concerns on the new
tax that will be imposed on them on July 1st. The proposed
Emissions Trade Scheme will increase business costs by
between 3% and 5% which Chamber CEO Michael Barnett
says will be diffi cult to recover in a subdued market.
“Add to this the fact that our trading partners won’t have
the same cost, you can expect our exporters’
competitiveness to be affected as well,” he says.
DERBY DYNAMO: Ellice Cresswell is all smiles after taking out the 2010 Demolition Derby.
BY COLIN THORSEN
Student hairdresser Ellice
Cresswell won the Demolition
Derby in her well groomed Nissan
Pulser at McDonald’s Kihikihi
Speedway.
The 17-year-old Matamata
teenager says she couldn’t believe
the fact that she had upstaged her
33 rivals in the derby.
‘‘It’s amazing to think I’ve won
on debut in my brother’s first car,
Ellice says she had no
preconceived plans going into the
derby. ‘‘I just tried to keep out of
Ellice says her first ever derby
The pair had their heads shaved outside Fresh
Ms Omundsen dedicated her close shave to friend
ebecca Sargent’s daughter Maddison (who was in
ttendance with her mum on Saturday) and Miss
rown to her late father Garry Brown.
There was plenty of good natured bantering as
hey waited to go under the razor, with Ms
mundsen’s father and her five-year-old twin sons
eciding to join in by having their heads shaved too.
TE AWAMUTU COURIER, THURSDAY, APRIL 29, 2010 17
Marist fight back for win
Te Awamutu Marist
turned a 19-15 halftime
deficit into a 29-24 victory
over Northern in Waikato
second division rugby.
The Marist scrum
improved as the game
progressed, pushing
Northern off their ball
numerous times at
Tahuna.
Northern’s backs
played well but Marist’s
tackling often stopped
them before the advantage
line.
The game was
reportedly a rather
scrappy affair, but good
discipline by Marist,
unlike Northern, gave
them the win.
Murray Gane Plumbing
sponsored Marist
scored four tries through
Norman Lima, Anthony
Kahura (2) and Ace
Masalo.
Logan McLaughlin,
who earlier in the day
refereed an under-85kg
game in Te Awamutu,
arrived in time to take the
field as a second half
replacement. He was on
target with three penalties.
The club hosted a successful
10-a-side president’s
grade tournament
deal to
Pirongia
Pirongia had a forgettable
33-5 loss to Kereone
in Waikato division one
rugby.
Kereone reportedly fed
off Pirongia’s poor handling
and weak defence.
PGG Wrightson
Pirongia’s only try came
late in the second half
from Shaun Coutts, who
powered his was over
Player of the day went
to Neil Findsen, who was
Joy for
soccer
reserves
Te Awamutu men’s
reserve soccer team beating
their bogey Unicol
side 3-1.
The opening goal
stemmed from Dave
Ireland blasting a shot
onto the crossbar. The
ball deflected into the
path of Lee Mallett who
finished off.
Five minutes later the
same two players were in
involved in the second
goal being scored —
Mallett crossing the ball
into the Unicol danger
area, the keeper fumbled
and Ireland punished the
mistake.
Te Awamutu sealed
their win midway
through the second half
with a second goal to
Ireland.
Player of the day was
Lee Broderick in central
defence.
The women’s reserve
team went down 5-0 away
to Morrinsville.
It was a disappointing
result after last week’s
narrow loss to Ngaruawahia
and putting in the
hard yards at training.
Player of the day was
Amber Western.
TA bow out of Chatham Cup
Te Awamutu senior men’s socer
team suffered a 5-1 loss to
tumoetai in the qualifying
ound of the Chatham Cup.
Otumoetai took the lead with a
ell taken goal by forward Brian
oldie at Anchor Park on Saturay.
Boldie was always the target
or their attacks and was given
he room, just enough, to punish a
tatic defence.
Cape Physio Te Awamutu tried
n vain to find a first half equalser,
but just weren’t given the
oom to penetrate.
Otumoetai managed to stretch
heir lead rather fortuitiously
hen an attempted Robbie Diaz
learance struck keeper Kevin
uckle’s ankles and deflected into
he net.
With a 2-0 lead, Otumoetai
were able to play the game at their
pace.
Kim Brierley reports that the
visitors always looked for the
forward who was constantly sitting
on the shoulder of the last
man in defence, waiting to pounce
on any mistakes the back four
would dish up.
They stretched their lead to 3-0
at halftime when a forward was
able to get on the blind side of
central defender Carl Miezenbeek
and slot the ball past keeper
Buckle as he came out to close the
angle.
Te Awamutu managed to get
through on occasions, but their
shooting boots had been left in the
changing rooms.
After some soul searching, Te
Awamutu came out for the second
period determined to put some
respectability into the scoreline.
But it was Otumoetai who
extended their lead to 4-0,
punishing some sloppy defending.
Te Awamutu finally opened
their account when Jimmy Maxwell
showed some nice footwork
to dance past a pair of defenders
and slot the ball past a sprawling
keeper.
Any chance of a Te Awamutu
comeback was dashed minutes
later when keeper Buckle spilt a
cross at the feet of a grateful
forward, who had no trouble
finding the back of the net.
Te Awamutu played well in
patches and the scoreline somewhat
flattered the Otumoetai visitors.
Man of the match for Cape
tireless Adam Blake.
NEW RELEASE
The long wait is over
for Opshop’s fans as the
band releases their new
single, Pins & Needles.
It’s been three years
since the release of
Opshop’s triple-platinum
selling album, Second
Hand Planet.
Now, freshly back
from supporting The
Fray and Jools Holland
at Singapore’s Rock and
Roots Festival the band
has a brand new single,
Pins & Needles.
Recorded at
Roundhead Studios with
long-time collaborators
and music production
royalty, Greg Haver and
Clint Murphy, Pins &
Needles is a vast
multiplex of imaginative
vocals, searing riffs,
dramatic string
arrangements and trademark
Bobby Kennedy
drums.
It is both immediately
‘Opshop’ and somehow
fresher, more feverish,
and altogether, bigger!
“We found some new
toys,” says lead singer
Jason Kerrrison, with
glee.
“Sonically we wanted
to evolve from Second
Hand Planet yet retain
what we did well as a
band, so we kept the
same great team around
us and added new
dimensions.”
A Visual Feast. Every seat is a front row
seat. Better than being there.
