Faithful to one<br />

system for 20 years<br />

Austrian electrical plant engineer is one<br />

of the original CAE users<br />

Over the past 20 years, the entire IT world has undergone<br />

an incomparably fast development process. Parallel to<br />

the hardware evolution, a seemingly infinite software<br />

diversity has emerged. Two decades ago, when “burgeoning”<br />

CAE systems were still in their infancy, the Austrian<br />

company Schubert Elektroanlagen was already producing<br />

its circuit diagrams digitally. Since then, it has remained<br />

faithful to EPLAN throughout the years.<br />

There are a number of traditional<br />

brands in the automotive industry that<br />

have existed for many decades – in<br />

some cases for more than 100 years.<br />

One may well ask whether the world of<br />

automation, particularly the ever-expanding<br />

market for design and planning<br />

software that is characterized by<br />

ever-shorter product cycles, is capable<br />

of attracting the same degree of brand<br />

loyalty as the automotive industry.<br />

The answer is yes, as this story shows.<br />

which we installed back in 1984 is not comparable with<br />

However, the software-assisted planning made our work easier<br />

from the outset, which in turn made us more productive“. The<br />

company’s very early entry into the age of computer aided engineering<br />

is testimony to the entrepreneurial spirit needed today<br />

in order to keep one step ahead of the fierce competition.<br />

Reliability counts<br />

The planning department employs a staff of 25.<br />

The company handles between 1,500 and 1,800<br />

projects each year, a vast number of circuit and<br />

terminal diagrams to be generated by only four<br />

draftsmen. At first glance, this may seem an astonishing<br />

achievement. However, a closer look reveals<br />

one of the main reasons for this incredible<br />

level of productivity, in the form of a digital<br />

data archive that has been carefully<br />

maintained for many years. “This extensive<br />

library of EPLAN drawings represents our<br />

collective know-how, and<br />

is therefore an extremely<br />

valuable asset for us”, company’s<br />

CEO Claus Benedict<br />

explains proudly. What is<br />

more, it is also one of the<br />

significant benefits of remaining<br />

loyal to the EPLAN<br />

system. “We have created<br />

a large collection of macros”,<br />

continues Gugarel,<br />

“in which we have stored<br />

specifically tailored functional<br />

units, which we are<br />

able to access at any time.<br />

This makes our planning<br />

work very productive”.<br />

drawings, accumulated over many<br />

years, represents our entire knowhow,<br />

and is therefore a very valuable<br />

asset to us”.<br />

Other modules under consideration<br />

At Schubert, the standard version of<br />

EPLAN 5 is only used for the generation of<br />

circuit and terminal diagrams. However,<br />

prompted in part by the growing number<br />

of projects in the field of instrumentation<br />

and control technology, the company is considering<br />

purchasing other products from<br />

the EPLAN portfolio. “The automatic generation<br />

of circuit diagrams, as well as the<br />

new “eCabinet” for enclosure planning,<br />

are interesting tools”, admits Gugarel. But<br />

that is a story for next time …<br />
