Faithful to one
system for 20 years
Austrian electrical plant engineer is one
of the original CAE users
Over the past 20 years, the entire IT world has undergone
an incomparably fast development process. Parallel to
the hardware evolution, a seemingly infinite software
diversity has emerged. Two decades ago, when “burgeoning”
CAE systems were still in their infancy, the Austrian
company Schubert Elektroanlagen was already producing
its circuit diagrams digitally. Since then, it has remained
faithful to EPLAN throughout the years.
There are a number of traditional
brands in the automotive industry that
have existed for many decades – in
some cases for more than 100 years.
One may well ask whether the world of
automation, particularly the ever-expanding
market for design and planning
software that is characterized by
ever-shorter product cycles, is capable
of attracting the same degree of brand
loyalty as the automotive industry.
The answer is yes, as this story shows.
Werner Gugarel, Technical Director at
Schubert Elektroanlagen: “If you have Schubert Elektroanlagen in Oberbeen
working with a CAE program for Grafendorf near St. Pölten has been
as long as we have, you particularly
appreciate every new feature, because using EPLAN for the best part of 20
you are able to put it to good use right years. Werner Gugarel, Technical Di-
away and organize your day-to-day rector at Schubert, recalls how it all star-
work more efficiently“.
ted: “Of course, the first EPLAN version
which we installed back in 1984 is not comparable with
the current release in terms of performance and function.
However, the software-assisted planning made our work easier
from the outset, which in turn made us more productive“. The
company’s very early entry into the age of computer aided engineering
is testimony to the entrepreneurial spirit needed today
in order to keep one step ahead of the fierce competition.
Reliability counts
The planning department employs a staff of 25.
The company handles between 1,500 and 1,800
projects each year, a vast number of circuit and
terminal diagrams to be generated by only four
draftsmen. At first glance, this may seem an astonishing
achievement. However, a closer look reveals
one of the main reasons for this incredible
level of productivity, in the form of a digital
data archive that has been carefully
maintained for many years. “This extensive
library of EPLAN drawings represents our
collective know-how, and
is therefore an extremely
valuable asset for us”, company’s
CEO Claus Benedict
explains proudly. What is
more, it is also one of the
significant benefits of remaining
loyal to the EPLAN
system. “We have created
a large collection of macros”,
continues Gugarel,
“in which we have stored
specifically tailored functional
units, which we are
able to access at any time.
This makes our planning
work very productive”.
Claus Benedict, CEO of Schubert
Elektroanlagen: “The library of EPLAN
drawings, accumulated over many
years, represents our entire knowhow,
and is therefore a very valuable
asset to us”.
Other modules under consideration
At Schubert, the standard version of
EPLAN 5 is only used for the generation of
circuit and terminal diagrams. However,
prompted in part by the growing number
of projects in the field of instrumentation
and control technology, the company is considering
purchasing other products from
the EPLAN portfolio. “The automatic generation
of circuit diagrams, as well as the
new “eCabinet” for enclosure planning,
are interesting tools”, admits Gugarel. But
that is a story for next time …
When it comes
to CAE, Schubert
Elektroanlagen
has put its faith
in EPLAN for the
past 20 years.
