Prof. Ulrich Albrecht graduated in aeronautical engineering,<br />
political science <strong>and</strong> economics at Stuttgart<br />
University. Since 1972, he has been professor of peace <strong>and</strong><br />
conflict studies at the Free University of Berlin. He has<br />
worked as a consultant for the UN (Dept. of Disarmament<br />
Affairs), <strong>and</strong> served as head of planning in the East<br />
German Ministry for Foreign Affairs during the reunification<br />
process.<br />
Sir Michael Atiyah, President of<br />
<strong>Pugwash</strong>, is a mathematician, Master<br />
at Trinity College in Cambridge (1990-<br />
1997), <strong>and</strong> former president of <strong>The</strong><br />
Royal Society (1990-1995). He was<br />
the first director (1990-1996) of the<br />
Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical<br />
Sciences, <strong>and</strong> received the Fields Medal in 1966. (‡)<br />
Prof. Gabriel Baramki, is a chemist, Consultant to the<br />
Palestinian Ministry of Higher Education <strong>and</strong> Scientific<br />
Research, Ramallah; President of the Palestinian Council<br />
for Justice <strong>and</strong> Peace. He was formerly Acting President of<br />
Birzeit Univeresity <strong>and</strong> Secretary-general of the (Palestinian)<br />
Council for Higher Education.<br />
Prof. Francesco Calogero is professor of theoretical<br />
physics at the University of Rome “La Sapienza” <strong>and</strong><br />
Chair of the <strong>Pugwash</strong> Council, former Secretary-General<br />
of <strong>Pugwash</strong> (1989-1997), <strong>and</strong> a former member of the<br />
Governing Board of SIPRI (1982-1992). (‡)<br />
Prof. Ana María Cetto, Chair of the <strong>Pugwash</strong> Executive<br />
Committee, is research professor at the Institute of<br />
Physics, National University of Mexico, <strong>and</strong> a member of<br />
the Council of United Nations University. She is former<br />

dean of the Faculty of Sciences, UNAM, consultant,<br />
UNESCO, <strong>and</strong> Vice President of the Third World Organization<br />

Mr. Chen Jifeng is convener of the <strong>Pugwash</strong> Group of<br />
China, vice president of the China Arms Control <strong>and</strong><br />
Disarmament Association, executive vice president of the<br />
China Association for Promotion of International Science<br />
<strong>and</strong> Peace, <strong>and</strong> former Secretary General of the Chinese<br />
People’s Association for Peace <strong>and</strong> Disarmament (CPAPD)<br />
in Beijing, <strong>and</strong> a former Council Member of the Chinese<br />
Association for International Underst<strong>and</strong>ing.<br />
Lt.-Gen. Emmanuel Erskine is a retired general from<br />
Ghana who served in several comm<strong>and</strong>ing capacities with<br />
United Nations Peacekeeping Forces, especially in the<br />
Middle East. (‡)<br />
Dr. Esmat Ezz is a toxicologist <strong>and</strong> retired general from<br />
Egypt who has been deeply involved in international negotiations<br />
<strong>and</strong> verification activities on chemical weapons.<br />
Currently he is a professor at the Military Academy in<br />
Cairo.<br />
Academician Vitalii Goldanskii is the former director of<br />
the Institute of Chemical Physics of the Russian Academy<br />
of Sciences, Moscow. (*)<br />
Maj.-Gen. Leonard Johnson is a retired Canadian general<br />
who served at intermediate <strong>and</strong> high levels of comm<strong>and</strong><br />
<strong>and</strong> staff during 35 years in the Canadian Forces. On<br />
retirement, he had completed four years as Comm<strong>and</strong>ant<br />
of the National Defence College at Kingston, Ontario. A<br />
<strong>Pugwash</strong>ite since 1985, he is the immediate past chairman<br />
of the Canadian <strong>Pugwash</strong> Group.
