Prof. Ulrich Albrecht graduated in aeronautical engineering,
political science and economics at Stuttgart
University. Since 1972, he has been professor of peace and
conflict studies at the Free University of Berlin. He has
worked as a consultant for the UN (Dept. of Disarmament
Affairs), and served as head of planning in the East
German Ministry for Foreign Affairs during the reunification
process.
Sir Michael Atiyah, President of
Pugwash, is a mathematician, Master
at Trinity College in Cambridge (1990-
1997), and former president of The
Royal Society (1990-1995). He was
the first director (1990-1996) of the
Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical
Sciences, and received the Fields Medal in 1966. (‡)
Prof. Gabriel Baramki, is a chemist, Consultant to the
Palestinian Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific
Research, Ramallah; President of the Palestinian Council
for Justice and Peace. He was formerly Acting President of
Birzeit Univeresity and Secretary-general of the (Palestinian)
Council for Higher Education.
Prof. Francesco Calogero is professor of theoretical
physics at the University of Rome “La Sapienza” and
Chair of the Pugwash Council, former Secretary-General
of Pugwash (1989-1997), and a former member of the
Governing Board of SIPRI (1982-1992). (‡)
Prof. Ana María Cetto, Chair of the Pugwash Executive
Committee, is research professor at the Institute of
Physics, National University of Mexico, and a member of
the Council of United Nations University. She is former

dean of the Faculty of Sciences, UNAM, consultant,
UNESCO, and Vice President of the Third World Organization
for Women in Science (TWOWS). (‡)
Mr. Chen Jifeng is convener of the Pugwash Group of
China, vice president of the China Arms Control and
Disarmament Association, executive vice president of the
China Association for Promotion of International Science
and Peace, and former Secretary General of the Chinese
People’s Association for Peace and Disarmament (CPAPD)
in Beijing, and a former Council Member of the Chinese
Association for International Understanding.
Lt.-Gen. Emmanuel Erskine is a retired general from
Ghana who served in several commanding capacities with
United Nations Peacekeeping Forces, especially in the
Middle East. (‡)
Dr. Esmat Ezz is a toxicologist and retired general from
Egypt who has been deeply involved in international negotiations
and verification activities on chemical weapons.
Currently he is a professor at the Military Academy in
Cairo.
Academician Vitalii Goldanskii is the former director of
the Institute of Chemical Physics of the Russian Academy
of Sciences, Moscow. (*)
Maj.-Gen. Leonard Johnson is a retired Canadian general
who served at intermediate and high levels of command
and staff during 35 years in the Canadian Forces. On
retirement, he had completed four years as Commandant
of the National Defence College at Kingston, Ontario. A
Pugwashite since 1985, he is the immediate past chairman
of the Canadian Pugwash Group.
