Operations Report
Weathering the storm, both literally and metaphorically would
be the best way to describe the 2009/10 season from an
operational point of view. With special events like the Under
19 World Cup added on to an already congested season
schedule, it was always envisaged that the operations team
would be tested to its limits. Then, with the weather blowing
games off the park, 2009/10 will certainly be a season to
remember.
The highlight of the season would have to be the fantastic
growth of the HRV Cup. After initial successes in 2008/09, it
was really heartening to see the crowds streaming through
the JR Reid and CS Dempster gates. Full banks for domestic
games have been a rarity in the past, but with this occurring
on repeated occasions it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that
domestic cricket is back.
The international series proved to be a challenge, with first
the Pakistanis playing a test before Christmas, and then the
Australians setting up camp in Wellington for two weeks in
March. Both teams were a pleasure to host and certainly
didn’t live up to the professional athlete stereotype. In
particular Doug Bollinger proved to be a very affable character
and must be commended for coping with gale force winds on
Day Two of the Test. Certainly, all of the match management
crew were losing their hair in trying to deal with the wind.
It seems like “Ground Hog day” to say that Karori Park is
nearing its first Class status. However, we can assure
everyone that the criteria are being ticked off and we now just
need to address two improvements, which the Wellington
City Council have in hand. Every year the ground gets better
and we feel confident that once the warrant is approved,
Karori Park will be a match for most grounds in the country.
Looking ahead to the new season, the biggest challenge will
be to build upon the success of the HRV Cup. Moving to
a December slot, we will have to work even harder to get
the crowds in, and the aim will be to give the public a value-
for-money experience. With just one Test Match and an ODI
in January, the schedules are certainly lighter but will still
present the same challenges associated with international
teams.
