Wellington Women’s Cricketer
of the Year - Sophie Devine
Sophie Devine deservedly won the Wellington Women’s
Cricketer of the Year award. Sophie’s batting was outstanding
and she had several wonderful knocks that saved the Blaze
from tricky situations and also assisted in winning games
where defeat looked more than possible. One example was
her 67 against Canterbury at the start of the domestic season
when she and Liz Perry (49*) added 119* in 20 overs for the
sixth wicket. With Liz acting as the accumulator and Sophie
as the hitter, they steered the Blaze to a marvelous victory in
the 50th over.
Sophie was Wellington’s leading run-scorer in both the
Twenty20 and One-Day competitions, averaging over 44 in
both. In four Twenty20 innings she scored 134 runs and in the
one-dayers made 270 runs in seven innings with a top score
of 73 against Northern Districts.
She had several other memorable innings across both
competitions and is one of the few women players who is
capable of finding the boundary every ball if she is given the
licence to.
| Cricket Wellington Inc Annual Report
Sophie’s bowling was solid throughout, and she took 15
wickets in the One-Day competition, including 5-15 against
Canterbury. With the ability to throw the ball in hard from the
boundary Sophie is an outstanding fielder and was involved
in some way in most dismissals.
Overall she is a very astute cricketer who works hard on her
fitness and leads by example off the field as well as on it.
Her ability to talk about the game and read situations was of
great assistance to first time Wellington Blaze captain Megan
Wakefield this summer.
Wellington cricket is fortunate in having her return to us from
Christchurch where her family now lives. Sophie enjoys being
involved with the Blaze players and values the experience
in Wellington. If she continues to develop as she has done
then there is nothing stopping her becoming one of the top
women’s all-rounders in the world.
