Overview
NZ Cricket Museum
All performance objectives as per the New Zealand Cricket
Museum’s Business Plan 2009/10 were exceeded in the
financial year, with new records achieved in most areas. The
Museum truly flourished with a new annual record of 2,832
visitors being established, along with a record number of 37
school and community group visits being made.
The Annual Survey results achieved new benchmarks in terms
of visitors’ appraisals. There was a 100% visitor satisfaction
rating (46% excellent, 40% very good, 14% good) for the
fifth year in a row; and the Overall Quality ‘excellent’ rating
was 80% (100% in total, as 20% regarded the overall quality
as ‘good’).
The annual target of 300 items accessioned into the Vernon
Systems Collection Management database was exceeded
with the final total reaching 407.
Exhibitions
The following three new exhibitions/displays were installed
in 2009/10.
1. New Zealand Cricket 19th Century showcase display
2. A small promotional museum table-top display, and a
small Victoria University Cricket Club table-top display
were installed for 6 months at the Cable Car Museum
3. A wall-mounted display of the Heathcote Williams
Shield and an updated Plunket Shield display panel
Marketing
The Museum web page established under the umbrella of
New Zealand Cricket in 2004/05 went through a series of
changes in 2008/09 following the redesign of the New Zealand
Cricket website. These resulted in a reduced Museum profile.
Regretfully, issues related to this were not addressed in
2009/10 and it is now hoped they will be addressed in the
new financial year. However, there were still 17,341 hits in the
2009 calendar year. The two New Zealand Cricket Museum
newsletters for 2009/10
were archived and linked
to the NZCM page on
the New Zealand Cricket
web-site.
The Museum produced
two newsletters - the
Winter/Spring and
the Summer/Autumn
editions in 2009/10, and
they were distributed
throughout the New
Zealand first-class
cricket network. The
Museum is grateful for
the continued funding
support of Pub Charity in
the production of these
newsletters.
There has also been
a d v e r t i s i n g / m e d i a
exposure through The
Dominion Post, the
Wellington Official Visitor Guide, Jason’s Wellington What’s
On Guide, Capital Times, the National Programme, and Radio
Sport.
A new marketing feature was introduced with the Museum
providing cricket trivia questions and answers sets to New
Zealand Cricket for showing on replay screens at Test
matches during the summer. There was also a successful
stakeholders’ function in March.
Museum Shop
The Museum shop continued to provide a good profile for
New Zealand Cricket, and a steady source of revenue for
the Museum. New BLACKCAPS sale items were provided
by Event Merchandise Services Ltd in December. Shop sales
income exceeded the budget revenue target for the 2009/10
financial year. The Book Sale during the BLACKCAPS’ Test
against Australia raised $1,383, which, along with other
March sales, established a new monthly book sales record
of $1,653.
Education
A greater focus given to group visits in 2009/10 resulted
in 12 additional groups visiting, surpassing the previous
record of 25 groups. A new development was the visit of
students from the Wellington School of Cricket, which is to
be established as part of an annual programme. A range of
cricket heritage programmes were prepared to meet the
needs and requirements of each group. A small number of
researchers also used the resources of the Museum’s library.
The Museum visitor survey results reveal that 74% of our
visitors were from overseas, particularly England (44%).
These visitors rate the Museum very highly and compare it
more than favourably to other overseas cricket museums.
The education/research value of exhibitions was rated as
‘excellent’ or ‘good’ by 95% of visitors.
