Cricket Wellington Umpires
and Scorers
Chairman’s Report
To sum up the 2009/10 season in one word, would be ‘disappointing’. The weather in the first half of the season was very average
and there was some unacceptable player behaviour with 17 code of conduct reports although not all were lodged by umpires.
The percentage of captains reports on umpires was again disappointing even though it was still ahead of other associations.
This season six of our members were on national umpiring panels and were appointed to New Zealand Cricket fixtures as follows:
Evan Watkin (Elite Panel): 1 ODI, 1 Women’s Twenty20
International, 6 Plunket Shield matches, 6 Domestic Oneday
games including both semifinals, 7 Mens domestic (HRV
Cup) Twenty20 games, third umpire in 3 ODIs, 2 Twenty20
Internationals, the HRV Cup final and 1 Women’s Twenty20
International and fourth official in 2 ODIs and 1 Twenty20
International.
Evan Gray (Elite Panel): 8 Plunket Shield matches, 7 Domestic
One-day games, 5 HRV Cup Twenty20 games, third umpire in
2 HRV Cup games, Women’s Twenty20 final.
Jeremy Busby (A Panel): 1 HRV Cup Twenty20 game, 5
Women’s League games, 2 Women’s League Twenty20
games, 1 Hawke Cup challenge.
Kathy Cross (Reserve Panel): 6 Women’s League games,
3 Women’s League Twenty20 games and the Women’s
Development Tournament.
Rob Kinsey (Reserve Panel): 3 Women’s League games, 1
Women’s League Twenty20 game and games in the Gillette
Cup Tournament.
Grant McAlister (Reserve Panel): 2 Women’s League games,
1 Women’s League Twenty20 game and officiated at both the
Under-17 and Gillette Cup tournaments.
As a result of captain’s reports, the names of the following
umpires have been forwarded to New Zealand Cricket to be
considered for national panels or tournaments: Evan Watkin,
Kathy Cross, Grant McAlister, Garth Stirrat, Jeremy Busby, Rob
Kinsey, Peter Chapman, Bruce Jenkins, and Robert Dossett.
All the other umpires who stood during the season are
listed below in alphabetical order within their grades with
several not being available for consideration for NZC panels
or not being qualified. Grade 1 umpires must have passed
the level 4 examination and have stood in at least 25 days
of senior cricket, Grade 2 umpires are those with the level 3
examination and a minimum of 12 days of senior cricket and
the remainder are in grade 3.
Grade 1: David Abbott, David Brandon, Evan Gray.
Grade 2: Peter Bidwell, Paul Devadatta, Ricky Jeffery, Gopal
Reddy Kalicheti.
Grade 3: Stu Bullen, Richard Conway, Paul Cummings, Mark
Dijksma, Phil McMahon, Vincent Rosario, Nikki
Sinclair.
The following are the statistics for club cricket umpiring for
the 2009/10 season with figures for the 2008/09 season in
brackets for comparison:
| Cricket Wellington Inc Annual Report
There were 22 (27) active umpires and we averaged 14.79
(14.35) umpires per day. There were 24 (20) club playing days
and we provided the following umpiring days:
Pearce Cup: 186 (150), Hazlett Trophy: 158 (129), Senior
Women 1 (0), Senior 2: 1 (0), Senior 3: 0 (7), 2A: 0 (1), TOTALS:
346 (287).
In addition we provided umpires for many other fixtures under
the jurisdiction of Cricket Wellington and some traditional
College fixtures.
Evan Watkin was awarded the Stanley Cowman Memorial
Trophy as the umpire who received the highest average
marks from captains during the club season. This award is also
subject to the umpire being available for 12 club Saturdays
during the season but which can include NZC commitments.
The Brownie Watson Trophy for the most improved umpire
was won by Peter Bidwell, and Paul Devadatta was awarded
the Pop Calcinai Trophy for his services to the organisation in
developing our own website and then ensuring it was kept
up-to-date during the season.
My thanks to our Secretary, Graeme Watson; Regional
Training Officer, Jeremy Busby; Treasurer Rob Kinsey and
Auditor, Roger Watkin. Thanks to all the other members of the
CWUSI Management Board for their efforts over the season.
Congratulations to Bill Sommer on his election as President
of the New Zealand Cricket Umpires & Scorers Association
and to Grant McAlister on his election to the Management
Board of NZCUSA.
As always, CWUSI needed assistance from many other
sources during the season. First and foremost are the people
who actually umpire and I thank the other 21 people who
gave up their time to umpire during the season. Thanks also to
Cricket Wellington for allowing us to use their training room at
the Wellington School of Cricket in Westpac Stadium, to Gavin
Larsen and all the staff at Cricket Wellington for their support
and assistance during the season, and to Malcolm McCaw
and the Norwood Trust for continuing to provide funding to
send our delegates to the annual Umpires Conference.
Sadly, two of our Life Members passed away during the year
- Haig Whiting, the Patron of CWUSI, and Robert Bradley.
