Knights’ Heritage Society McQuaid Jesuit is committed to fostering the development of a young man’s God-given talents: spiritually, intellectually, physically, emotionally and aesthetically. While preparing him for further education, his life’s work and social interaction, McQuaid Jesuit reaches beyond these goals to produce a growing love of learning and enthusiasm for life that will enable him to meet ever-changing challenges. All involved with McQuaid Jesuit work to achieve this development by personal concern for each student, competitive educational programs, distinctive Jesuit spirit and a formative sense of community. This is done in the hope that its academically select graduates will become “Men for Others,” dedicated to serving God and humanity and guided by a profound sense of justice.
From the President Edward F. Salmon, S.J. Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends of McQuaid, We all have dreams – dreams for ourselves and dreams for those we love. God, too, has a dream for us. I believe St. Paul expressed God’s dream this way: “Out of God’s infinite glory, may God give you the power, through God’s own Spirit, for your hidden self (for all the best that is in you) to continue to grow strong so that Christ may live in your hearts through faith. . . .” Our dream, McQuaid’s dream for our students, is expressed in our hope that all the best that is in them has grown strong because they have become young men who are intellectually competent, open to growth, religious, loving and committed to justice. As you page through this issue of the Cauldron, I hope that you will see, as I see, that God’s dream for us, that our dream for our students and our graduates, is coming true. It also is my hope that as you page through this issue of the Cauldron, you will share my deep sense of gratitude -- gratitude to God, whose Spirit clearly is at work here at McQuaid; gratitude to all those who, by their generosity and dedication, love and commitment, are helping make God’s dream for our students come true. Many pages of this issue list the names of our many and generous benefactors. Their generosity is clear evidence that they are loving and committed to justice. Their love has moved them to action and generosity, action and generosity that help make it possible for many of our students who otherwise could not afford to do so, to benefit from a McQuaid education that sets them free to become all the best that they can become. You will also see in these pages pictures of the graduates of the Class of 2011. As you review the list of universities and colleges to which they have been accepted, join me in realizing and in giving thanks that our dreams for them (and God’s and yours) are coming true. Clearly they are intellectually competent and prepared and open to growth in knowledge and in their experience of life and of love. Their participation in the retreat and the Christian Service programs have set them on their way to being and to becoming even more religious, loving and committed to justice. One picture, they say, is worth a thousand words. Contemplate the picture on the cover of the Cauldron. Middle School students, High School students, Middle School faculty and staff, High School faculty and staff all laboring together in a work of love and service flowing from days of prayer. We all have reason not only to be proud of them but most grateful for them. We at McQuaid have a faculty, a staff who are themselves intellectually competent, open to growth, religious, loving and committed to justice and they are dedicated to sharing their gifts so that our dream, your dream, God’s dream for our students might continue to come true. You also will see pictured in these pages our Alumnus of the Year, Tom Dessauer '64. In a very real sense, Tom stands as a symbol of our dream for all of our alumni. In your years at McQuaid perhaps you never heard the words, “Intellectually competent, open to growth, religious, loving and committed to justice.” But that is what we dreamed for you and that is what you have become. For Tom and for all of you, our loyal and generous alumni, we are grateful. The brotherhood that grows and deepens during your years at McQuaid never dies. The alumni who gathered for Alumni Weekend, for the Athletic Hall of Fame Dinner, and for the reunion of the Class of ’61 testify to that. For all that has been, I am grateful. For all that is, I am grateful. For all that will be, I look for your continued generous love and support as together we help to make dreams come true. Sincerely and gratefully in our Lord, Edward F.
