Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends of McQuaid, 

We all have dreams – dreams for ourselves and dreams for those we love. God, too, has a dream for us. I believe St. 

Paul expressed God’s dream this way: “Out of God’s infinite glory, may God give you the power, through God’s 

own Spirit, for your hidden self (for all the best that is in you) to continue to grow strong so that Christ may live in 

your hearts through faith. . . .” Our dream, McQuaid’s dream for our students, is expressed in our hope that all the 

best that is in them has grown strong because they have become young men who are intellectually competent, open 

to growth, religious, loving and committed to justice. As you page through this issue of the Cauldron, I hope that you 

will see, as I see, that God’s dream for us, that our dream for our students and our graduates, is coming true. It also is 

my hope that as you page through this issue of the Cauldron, you will share my deep sense of gratitude -- gratitude to 

God, whose Spirit clearly is at work here at McQuaid; gratitude to all those who, by their generosity and 

dedication, love and commitment, are helping make God’s dream for our students come true. 

Many pages of this issue list the names of our many and generous benefactors. Their generosity is clear evidence 

that they are loving and committed to justice. Their love has moved them to action and generosity, action and 

generosity that help make it possible for many of our students who otherwise could not afford to do so, to benefit 

from a McQuaid education that sets them free to become all the best that they can become. 

You will also see in these pages pictures of the graduates of the Class of 2011. As you review the list of universities 

and colleges to which they have been accepted, join me in realizing and in giving thanks that our dreams for them 

(and God’s and yours) are coming true. Clearly they are intellectually competent and prepared and open to growth 

in knowledge and in their experience of life and of love. Their participation in the retreat and the Christian Service 

programs have set them on their way to being and to becoming even more religious, loving and committed to justice. 

One picture, they say, is worth a thousand words. Contemplate the picture on the cover of the Cauldron. Middle 

School students, High School students, Middle School faculty and staff, High School faculty and staff all laboring 

together in a work of love and service flowing from days of prayer. We all have reason not only to be proud of them 

but most grateful for them. We at McQuaid have a faculty, a staff who are themselves intellectually competent, open 

to growth, religious, loving and committed to justice and they are dedicated to sharing their gifts so that our dream, 

your dream, God’s dream for our students might continue to come true. 

You also will see pictured in these pages our Alumnus of the Year, Tom Dessauer '64. In a very real sense, Tom 

stands as a symbol of our dream for all of our alumni. In your years at McQuaid perhaps you never heard the words, 

“Intellectually competent, open to growth, religious, loving and committed to justice.” But that is what we dreamed 

for you and that is what you have become. For Tom and for all of you, our loyal and generous alumni, we are 

grateful. The brotherhood that grows and deepens during your years at McQuaid never dies. The alumni who 

gathered for Alumni Weekend, for the Athletic Hall of Fame Dinner, and for the reunion of the Class of ’61 testify to 

that.

• 250 students sat for 552 Advancement Placement Exams. The average score was 3.65

• Tailgate and dedication ceremonies, attended by hundreds of alumni, parents and 

student-athletes, held to celebrate the opening of the renovated track and turf. 

• Brian Frain, S.J., superior of the McQuaid Jesuit community, pronounced his final 

vows in the fall of 2010 during the Mass of the Holy Spirit. 

• Fr. Joseph DeMaio O.Carm., celebrated his 40th year of teaching at McQuaid Jesuit

Students Volunteer 

at Camp Koinonia

Shortly after school let out for the summer in June, 

McQuaid Jesuit students and adult leaders, most of 

whom are faculty and staff of McQuaid, volunteered 

their time at Camp Koinonia, a Catholic family camp in 

Italy Valley, NY. Opened in 1957, Camp Koinonia 

provides an environment for family and personal 

renewal. Chris Hood, McQuaid’s Director of Christian 

Service, attended the camp in the summer of 2010. 

Following his visit, he contacted the board of directors, 

proposing that the school embrace two service retreats at 

the camp to improve the facilities. 

The goals of the service retreats were to give the 

students an experience that would be a combination of 

work, prayer, and fun. For many of the students, this 

would be their first service trip and retreat experience. 

The participation goal was to have 30-40 students 

involved between the two retreats, one for the high school 

and one for the middle school. More than 120 students 

were involved between the two retreats, far surpassing 

the initial goal. For the second service retreat, June 22-24, 

there were 60 middle school student participants, 12 high 

school student leaders, and 12 adult leaders and helpers, 

making it the largest overnight retreat and service trip 

experience McQuaid had ever created! 

The high school service retreat was June 19-21. The 

students took off two layers of shingles and put a new 

roof on the craft lodge, painted the outside of four 

cabins in the upper camp, and began the painting of the 

main lodge, among other projects. The middle school 

students completed the painting of the main lodge, 

scoured the chapel clean, painted the outdoor pavilion, 

and helped split and stack a ton of firewood. It was not 

all work, however. There was plenty of time for ultimate 

Frisbee games, hikes up a creek to a waterfall, and night 

games of manhunt and capture the flag. Brian Frain, S.J. 

came to celebrate Mass in the chapel for each service 

retreat. There also was evening prayer and group 

reflection to give the service retreats a reflective 

component. 

Overall, the retreats were a great success. One unique 

wrinkle that was added to the retreats is that a few faculty 

members brought their kids on the retreats with them. 

This gave the opportunity for the kids of the faculty 

members to work alongside the students. In total there 

were 17 adults who made the retreats possible by 

volunteering their time. The service retreats were 

popular and successful enough that they will be an 

annual offering. If you would like to get involved, please

1972 

The Year That 

Almost Wasn't

Forty years ago, in September of 1971, McQuaid 

Jesuit’s 15th graduating class began its 

senior year. Had history gone differently, those 

164 young men might have been the last to call 

themselves McQuaid alumni. As Bill O’Malley, S.J., 

narrates in his history of McQuaid’s first 25 years, 

"Phoenix" (hereafter paraphrased), our school came 

right to the brink of being phased out, beginning in 

1968 when the Class of 1972 were freshmen. 

There were 18 Jesuits at McQuaid in ’68, down from 

a high of 33 in the late ’50s. With Jesuit numbers 

dwindling as new vocations plummeted through the 

’60s, the New York Province administrators had 

undertaken an extensive series of meetings among all 

Jesuit communities in 1967-68 to determine whether 

they could continue to staff nine high schools 

adequately. 

It had been the most fundamental principle of St. 

Ignatius in governing the Society that, where the needs 

were many and the Jesuits were few, the Society should 

go where the greater glory of God and the good of 

souls (the magis) promised to result. The question for 

the McQuaid Jesuit community, therefore, was: given 

the needs of the Church in New York and New Jersey 

and the various other apostolates of the province, could 

McQuaid Jesuit High School legitimately continue to 

make a call on the diminishing resources of the 

province – or would it be a great service, however 

painful, to close McQuaid and reassign the McQuaid 

Jesuits to other apostolates, where their service could 

make a broader or deeper or more long-lasting 

contribution to the Kingdom of God? 

Their reluctant decision, in July of ’68, was to phase 

out two schools, McQuaid and Brooklyn Prep, and 

close both of them in 1972. (Brooklyn Prep, founded 

in 1908, actually did close in ’72.) Provincial Fr. Robert 

Mitchell met with McQuaid rector, Fr. Albert Bartlett, 

and principal, Fr. Joseph Gersitz, in late August and 

conveyed the bad news to them. Soon after, the 

vice-provincial for secondary schools, Fr. Joseph 

Browne, met with Fr. Bartlett - and the lay advisors he 

had enlisted in 1966 - to explain the reasons for the 

decision. One large factor was a mounting debt in the 

range of $700,000. 

To their eternal glory, Fr. Bartlett and his lay 

advisors refused to accept that decision without a fight. 

4 History of McQ 

The New York Province had plans to close McQuaid Jesuit after 

the class of 1972 graduated. A group of men came together and 

helped save the school, ensuring the future of McQuaid. 

They set to work to construct a plan that would stave 

off McQuaid’s closing. On a Friday in mid-September, 

Fr. Bartlett summoned McQuaid’s faculty and staff to a 

meeting to inform them that a press release, set to 

appear in the New York Times the following 

Monday, would officially announce the closing of the 

two schools. He reassured them that he and 10 of the 

lay advisors would fly to New York the next morning 

to make their case for a stay of execution. He was 

hopeful that they would prevail. That delegation, all of 

them McQuaid parents with business or legal 

know-how, was led by Tom Presutti and consisted 

of Joe Mancini, Mark Tuohey, Gerry Kennedy, Tony 

Cashette, Herb Vanden Brul, George Schiller, Vince 

Stanley, William “Wee” Wilmot, and Judge John 

Conway. After an all-day meeting, their persuasive 

efforts were successful. Fr. Mitchell agreed to give 

McQuaid until December 1 (a deadline later extended 

by seven months) to evolve a plan whereby the school 

could continue to exist under the responsibility of a 

Board of Trustees and with reduced Jesuit 

participation. The Times story on Brooklyn Prep’s 

phasing-out appeared two days later. McQuaid’s name 

had been deleted. 

Thus began negotiations between the New York 

Province, Fr. Bartlett, and the lay advisors that 

continued until late in 1969. That December, a contract

was signed that essentially turned the responsibility for 

McQuaid’s survival over to a Board of Trustees, 

headed by Fr. John McDonald, that included seven 

Jesuits and three laymen, with an additional layman 

to be added each year. In effect, McQuaid was “cut 

loose” to sink or swim according to its own devices. 

The trustees agreed that, should McQuaid cease to be a 

“secondary school for boys” or “no longer supplement 

the regular education with training in the doctrine and 

practice of the Catholic Church,” the trustees would be 

obliged from the sale of the school to pay the more than 

$1 million owed to the province, antecedent to any other 

outstanding debts. The rest is interesting history, but

McQuaid's doors open and a Jesuit education possible 

for future generations of Rochester's young men. 

This special group of men wrestled with a plan for the 

school to excel as fewer Jesuits took residence here in 

Rochester. Fundamental to the plan was the ability of 

lay men and women to carry on the teachings of St. 

Ignatius of Loyola. 

Today, it is not only McQuaid counting on the help 

of lay men and women to ensure the Jesuit future in 

Rochester. The Society of Jesus is well aware of the 

diminishing vocations across the world and has 

become proactive in training lay leaders to work with 

them to maintain and strengthen the Jesuit mission in 

its high schools across the country. 

In the book, What makes a Jesuit school Jesuit?, the 

Jesuit Secondary Education Association (JSEA) has 

defined the relationship between Jesuit schools and 

the Society of Jesus by setting forth the criteria that a 

school must meet in order to verify its Jesuit nature. 

The language uses phrases that reference "partners for 

mission" and "cooperation in mission" when 

describing how lay and Jesuits will work together 

to bring the ideals of St. Ignatius of Loyola to life at 

Jesuit schools. We are endeavored in a service of faith 

that promotes justice, has a reflective 

spiritual component, and strives to 

bring the gift of Christ to our world, 

complementing the academic 

excellence that consistently has been 

our most recognized attribute.

The Ignatian Mission 

of McQuaid Jesuit 

In the years that followed the 

difficult decisions of the late 1960s, 

McQuaid Jesuit has worked diligently 

to maintain its academic and Jesuit 

the account of how McQuaid and its Board of Trustees 

brought about a happy outcome would be the stuff of a 

much larger article. 

Suffice it to say that more than 5,000 McQuaid alumni 

can thank their tuxedos with red carnations and their 

diploma walk across the Eastman Theatre stage to the 

selfless men mentioned above and the many Jesuits and 

laypersons who have served the school so 

generously these past forty years. Looking at the vibrant 

and expanded McQuaid Jesuit of 2011, it’s hard to think 

of Rochester without “that school on Clinton and 

Elmwood.” But it almost happened.

Parents and coaches participate annually in an 

athletic program designed to acknowledge the role 

athletics plays in developing men of conscience. Campus 

Ministry provides retreat and reflection opportunities at 

every grade level. Christian Service offers submersion 

trips and other volunteer opportunities to help students 

recognize the gifts and goodness they have received from 

God and share them with their community. Faculty and 

staff are invited to share ideas and best practices 

regarding their participation in the mission at Leadership 

Seminars, Symposiums and Colloquia sponsored by the 

JSEA. 

These programs illustrate the proactive nature of the 

efforts taken by the Jesuits to ensure that all members of 

the community work together to preserve the tradition 

of developing young men "dedicated to serving God and 

humanity and guided by a profound sense of justice." As 

a result of this collective effort, we are confident that we 

will continue to provide a service to "the greater glory of 

God" and that the Society of Jesus will continue to 

support our shared mission at McQuaid Jesuit.

Thomas Dessauer ’64: 2011 Alumnus of the Year 

On Friday, June 10, Thomas Dessauer ’64 was 

honored as the Fr. Noonan Distinguished 

Alumnus of the Year. The award was presented 

to him by McQuaid Jesuit President Edward Salmon, 

S.J., during Reunion Weekend at the Fr. McNamara 

Alumni & Friends Golf Tournament at Shadow Pines 

Golf Club. 

The purpose of this award is to recognize and honor 

outstanding McQuaid Jesuit alumni, to direct 

attention to the work, achievements and 

accomplishments of McQuaid Jesuit and to encourage 

our alumni to merit recognition and honor by the 

excellence of their service and their lives. Tom embraces 

these qualities through his endless and tireless ways of 

helping people, especially those who have or are 

affected by cancer. Tom’s work with Gilda’s Club of 

Rochester, Camp Open Arms continues each year. 

During the summer, Tom makes sure the kids have 

plenty of ice cream and water throughout the camp day. 

During the Christmas season, Tom plays Santa Claus at 

the annual Christmas party for the kids and their 

families. Tom loves to help kids with cancer because it 

means so much to them and their families. When 

accepting the award, Tom addressed his fellow alumni 

by saying: “I was shocked and surprised to receive this 

prestigious award from McQuaid, however very

Thank you to everyone who traveled near 

and far to be a part of this year’s Reunion 

Weekend. The weather was great, the 

“remember when’s” were plenty and the 

brotherhood unmatched! Over the course of 

the weekend, more than 500 alumni of 

McQuaid Jesuit took part in golf, receptions, 

sailing, an outdoor picnic on the new turf at 

school, class gatherings, Mass, and the Athletic 

Hall of Fame Dinner. 

On Friday, June 10, 136 golfers hit the links 

at Shadow Pines Golf Club in Penfield. Fr. 

McNamara did his job from above as the 

weather couldn’t have been nicer. The 25th 

Reunion Class, 1986, led the way with four 

teams teeing it up. The classes of 1961, 1971 

and 1996 also were well represented. At the end 

of the day, the returning champs of 2010 came 

away victorious again: Matthew Grosodonia 

’04, Christian Cassara ’08, John Mihalitsas ’08 

and Thomas Vacca ’08. The long drive winners 

were Thomas Vacca ’08 and faculty member 

Bill Hochadel. The closest to the pin winners 

were Hai Nguyen ’00 and Chip White ’85. 

Immediately following the golf was a stag 

reception under a tent at Shadow Pines. Sixty 

additional alumni attended the reception. 

Alumni enjoyed a hearty buffet while 

reminiscing about the good times they had 

when they were young knights at McQuaid. 

Saturday, June 11, 50 alumni and family 

members enjoyed an outdoor picnic next to 

Tom Seymour Field and Bob Bradley Track. 

Alumni and their kids enjoyed running, 

jumping, catching the football and a fast pitch 

machine. There were tours of the school, 

robotics demonstrations and an alumni Mass 

celebrated by Fr. Salmon, with Fr. Fischer 

concelebrating. 

According to Kraig Siracuse ’86, who 

brought his family from Washington, D.C., for 

his 25th Reunion: 

"The weekend was fantastic. It was a great 

chance to see close friends and have the 

opportunity for my two boys to experience the 

unique McQuaid traditions, including Mass at 

the school chapel.”

as strangers, and 

after four years these 

classmates became 

my family, my 

brothers. We continue to be a very close group of 

friends. In times of need we are there for one another. 

We support our fellow classmates whenever and 

wherever we can. I am proud of my McQuaid 

classmates, fellow alumni and current students. Many 

students are counselors at Camp Open Arms and their 

friendship and support of these children is amazing. 

The best thing about camp for these kids is they don’t 

have to go to the hospital for the day. It’s amazing how 

a small gesture like a group hug can make such a huge 

impact on these children. You become personally 

attached, you can’t help it.” 

Giving back to the community is a way for Tom to make 

a difference. Tom is in the true spirit, a "Man for Others."

Athletic Hall of 

Fame Welcomes 

Third Class 

The 2011 McQuaid Jesuit Athletic Hall of Fame 

Ceremony was held Saturday, June 11, in the 

Deborah and John DiMarco ’60 Field House. More than 

280 attended as six individuals and two teams were part of 

the third induction class. McQuaid Jesuit graduate Rich “The 

Bull” Gaenzler ’85, voice of the Buffalo Bills, was the 

emcee for the evening and had the pleasure of introducing 

the inductees. 

First on the podium was the 1975 Two Mile Relay Team. 

Coached by Bob Bradley, the team held the Section V 

outdoor relay record until four hours prior to the ceremony, 

when the Rush Henrietta team broke their record of 7:45.5. 

Using a baton, as they had 36 years prior, each of the 

members -- John Farrell ’75, Tom Horton ’76, Tim Lawrence 

’75 and Thomas Lott ’76 -- spoke of the honor and pride of 

being elected to the Hall of Fame. The significance of their 

now broken record was summed up by Tim Lawrence: “It’s a 

big deal for a kid in high school to break two minutes for the 

half mile. It’s a really big deal for four high school kids to do 

it at the same time, same day. It’s a super big deal if four kids 

run under 7:50 and it’s crazy when somebody runs 7:45.” 

Keeping with the track theme, Bill Bruckel ’63, who 

graduated from McQuaid with five records to his name, was 

the next inductee honored. Bill could not be present. His 

nephew, Will Bruckel ’07, accepted the honor on his behalf. 

The next two inductees brought honor to the McQuaid 

hockey program both on the ice and behind the bench. Mike 

Doyle ’82 graduated from McQuaid as its all-time leading 

goal scorer. His record was broken three years later by his 

brother, Mark ’85. Mark was inducted into the McQuaid 

Jesuit Hall of Fame in 2008. “It’s a great honor to go in 

following my brother,” said Mike. “I’m glad he considered 

me such a good teacher.” 

Bob Pedersen led the formation of the hockey program in 

1968. “He demanded hard work, expectations were very 

high,” said Bob’s son, Paul ’84, who accepted the award in 

honor of his late father. “But at the same time he asked very 

little. He said, 'Give me your best effort, do the best you can, 

do it the right way and we will let the chips fall where they 

may fall.'" Coach Pedersen won three Section V titles, 

compiling a record of 160-31-12 in 10 seasons at McQuaid. 

Mike Ryan ’70, a three-sport athlete in football, basketball and 

baseball, credited his time at McQuaid and playing sports 

with shaping him into the man he is today. “What I 

remember about my sports career at McQuaid is not the wins 

or the losses, but what sports taught me: hard work, 

commitment, sportsmanship and competitiveness,” said

Ryan. “Just as important, McQuaid did this in a first-class 

way...I continue to take pride in being a McQuaid alumnus. 

Thank you, McQuaid.” 

Byron Schneider ’89 became the first volleyball player to go 

into the Athletic Hall of Fame. “It’s great to be the first athlete 

to represent volleyball in this Hall of Fame,” said Schneider. 

“I think the recognition earlier tonight for the (2010 

volleyball) State Championship Team shows how important 

volleyball is and how successful it is at McQuaid.” Schneider 

recalled finishing third in a speech competition in middle 

school. His prize was a $500 scholarship to a Rochester-area 

Catholic high school. He chose McQuaid. As he stated, the 

rest was history. 

In a very thoughtful and meaningful way, Tom Schott ’79 

accepted his award for being a three-sport athlete in football, 

basketball and baseball. He credited those affiliated with 

McQuaid for his success. “My belief is that I am standing in 

front of you because my playing career was a direct reflection 

of what was modeled for me as I grew up here,” said Schott. 

“There were lots of people back then who helped to yank 

more out of me than I ever thought possible and I’m proud 

if I resulted in a good model of their handiwork.” Schott, the 

1979 Knight of the Year, went on to say, “It was through their 

help and motivation that I can happily say that I never gave 

McQuaid anything less than my all.” 

The night concluded with the tallest team to be inducted into 

the Hall of Fame. Coached by Joe Marchese ’68, the 1988 

basketball team captured the first state title for McQuaid in 

the sport. Marchese spoke for the team and their 

achievements both in high school and beyond. “What these 

men have accomplished in their personal lives is as much a 

tribute to their talent, their work and their character as 

anything they accomplished on the hard court,” said 

Marchese. “The preparation they got at McQuaid not only 

served them well on the basketball court but also in the real 

world. They should be very proud. McQuaid should be very 

proud.” 

A total of 29 plaques now hang on the wall, representing 27 

individuals and two teams. All of the men on the plaques 

found success on the playing field, but most importantly 

found success in becoming "Men for Others". Speeches are

Remarks from the 

Vice President on Giving 

Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends of McQuaid Jesuit, 

I am pleased to introduce the 2010-11 Giving Report 

section of the Cauldron and share news of the school’s 

Advancement Department. You will find the names of 

people and organizations that made charitable gifts or 

underwrote key fundraising events during the past 

fiscal year. These gifts affected the lives of each of our 

830 young men in many important ways: teaching 

resources, service leadership programs, tuition aid, 

facilities, and quality of sports, arts and club programs. 

For many of our young men, these gifts made the 

difference in their decision to attend McQuaid. The most 

important message on this page is Thank you. 

From a giving standpoint, 2010-11 was solid in most 

categories and spectacular in at least one way. In total, 

$2.6 million was delivered by our donors. About $1.6 

million was delivered through annual programs, and 

$500,000 for capital and endowment funds, 

respectively. This fiscal year saw consistent year-overyear 

annual fund giving, an expected decrease in capital 

giving, and a sizeable increase in endowment giving due 

to a very generous gift from the estate of Anne 

Schoenberger. More is written about Anne’s gift later in 

this section. 

Annual Funding Program Highlights: 

The McQuaid Jesuit Fund (including Tuition Gifts) 

achieved results of $1.1 million. 

• Gifts from the Warmenhoven Family (Dan ’68 and 

Charmaine) and Jane and Neil Pappalardo ’60 

accounted for 15% of our annual gift total. These 

families, in particular, drove our overall giving 

success. 

• The Class of ’61, in its 50th Reunion year, raised 

$40,000 and topped all classes with a participation 

rate of 40%. 

• Knights' Council members totaled 188 for the year. 

• Overall Alumni and Current Parent Participation 

rates in annual giving were 16 % and 31%, 

respectively. 

• The $1.1 million equals 2009-10 results and is 

consistent with results over the past few years.

BASH, Alumni Weekend and other Events and 

Programs results were very strong. 

• BASH drew another record crowd of 510 people and 

grossed $357,000, also a record. Our chair families, 

Ray and Carolyn Helfrich and Steve and Lisa Ryan, 

exceeded all expectations. 

• Alumni Weekend, including the Athletic Hall of 

Fame (AHOF) Dinner, was financially and socially 

successful with a sold-out golf tournament and 

dinner on Friday, more than 280 attendees for 

Saturday’s AHOF Dinner, and a decent showing of 

100 folks for the Saturday afternoon family picnic. 

• The Magazine Drive and Corvette Raffle exceeded 

expectations and grossed more than $140,000. The 

Magazine Drive moved to a simpler, online version 

with ease. 

Endowment and Capital Fund Highlights: 

A large gift, estimated at more than $500,000, was left to 

the school by Anne Schoenberger to further enrich the 

John Schoenberger ’86 Scholarship Fund. 

• This is one of the largest gifts ever awarded to the 

school and the single largest bequest to date. 

The Lawrence J. Wroblewski, S.J. Scholarship Fund was 

created following his passing in January 2011 and in 

less than six months achieved gifts totaling more than 

$50,000. 

• The entire school community and many 

alumni worldwide rallied in support of this fund. 

The Stadium Project received $341,000 dollars and is 

95 % complete relative to Phase 1 funding expectations. 

• With regard to Phase 2 of the Stadium Project, no 

significant fundraising or building took place as 

various options were assessed. 

• There are efforts underway to complete Phase 2. 

Planning efforts are underway for the addition of a 6th 

grade class for the 2012-13 school year. These plans are 

being synched with capital plans for the cafeteria and 

the science labs; an overall master plan will emerge.

Alumni Communications and Marketing Highlights: 

Beyond the giving financials noted, there are a few 

additional areas to highlight. The Advancement team, 

working with President Edward F. Salmon, S.J., took 

special efforts to host appreciation and reunion events 

locally and in New York City, Naples, FL and Washington, 

D.C. We enjoyed the various venues, food, refreshments 

and dialogue and hope many of you did, too. We 

will continue scheduling many “gatherings” this year. 

I had occasion to interact with a number of our 

alumni and parents in structured marketing workshops 

attempting to discern how to better market and 

communicate with alumni and parents (current and 

prospective). This inbound marketing effort was most 

successful; you will soon see outbound marketing 

efforts touching alumni and parents that justify the work 

on the inbound side. 

I want to thank many of you for taking the calls from 

our partner, PCI, to update the Alumni Directory. I 

know few of us like getting those calls but it is 

invaluable to have up-to-date information. Hopefully 

many of you can benefit from this information as well. 

It is due out this fall. 

Plans for 2011-12: 

Here are some of the exciting events and programs you 

can count on for this fiscal year. 

• A BASH unlike any other on March 23-24, 2012 

led by Cathy and Tom Huber ’76, and Patti and Al 

Mahar ’73. 

• An ever-improving Alumni Weekend on June 9-10, 

2012, full of golf, BBQ, AHOF inductions and class 

reunion celebrations (’62 and ’87 leading the way). 

• More “gatherings” at locales across the country. 

• Timely website content, Cauldrons and Alumni and 

Friends Online Newsletters keeping you abreast of 

the news at McQuaid. 

• Our all important and necessary annual print and 

electronic appeals to you for charitable giving. 

Please give (or pledge) early to make this effort as 

simple as possible.

Scholarship Funds 

Throughout McQuaid Jesuit’s history, 

many donors have established “named” 

endowed scholarship funds. McQuaid is 

very prudent in our use of these funds 

to provide financial aid to our students. 

A donor may request that McQuaid 

Jesuit place their gift into a general, 

restricted, or endowment fund. This 

fund is named after St. Francis Xavier, 

in honor of the school’s patron, and has 

been built from the gifts of 

generous donors throughout the 

history of McQuaid Jesuit. Other gifts 

are placed into previously named 

scholarship funds when requested. 

A fully endowed scholarship is 

approximately $212,000 for the 2011-12 

academic year. Partially endowed 

scholarships range from 

$25,000-$211,999. Donors may establish 

a “named fund” with an initial funding 

requirement of $50,000. Listed below

McQuaid Jesuit’s Future 

The Father Noonan Knights' Heritage Society 

The Father Noonan Knights' Heritage Society is comprised of alumni, parents and 

friends of McQuaid Jesuit who intend to leave a legacy in their own name or in the 

name of a loved one as a way of helping the school form future leaders in service. 

More than 25 years ago, the life of a genuine and compassionate McQuaid 

Jesuit Senior, John M. Schoenberger ’86, was cut short in a tragic automobile 

accident. For his mother, Anne H. Schoenberger, it was extremely important that 

the memory of her son be embodied in a lasting and meaningful way. So it was 

that she, and her husband, John, established the John M. Schoenberger ’86 

Memorial Scholarship Fund. The desire in creating this endowed scholarship was 

“to provide academically able but financially unable students the opportunity to 

flourish in the Jesuit identity.” This scholarship, then, is awarded to an incoming 

freshman who otherwise could not afford to attend McQuaid Jesuit. The award is 

made, so long as he remains in good academic standing, through his four years at 

McQuaid. 

On October 21, 2010, Anne H. Schoenberger died. In her will she bequeathed 

her entire estate to McQuaid Jesuit to ensure the legacy of her son’s Memorial 

Scholarship. This more than $500,000 bequest will ensure in perpetuity the 

John M. Schoenberger '86 Memorial Scholarship Fund. Mrs. Schoenberger’s dream 

of providing a Jesuit education to young men who would not otherwise be able to 

afford one has been achieved. 

According to Anne’s niece, Ann Thompson Murphy, her Aunt Anne and her 

cousin, John, “embodied the Jesuit identity” of McQuaid. They described that 

identity in these words: 

There was always a belief in and knowledge of God’s all-encompassing 

presence; an enthusiasm for life, an effervescent love of learning, the 

highest regard for academic excellence, appreciation for “community” 

bonds, and a giving, nurturing spirit in all aspects of daily existence. 

The President of McQuaid Jesuit, Edward F. Salmon, S.J., recalls that in the 

Spiritual Exercises St. Ignatius points out “. . . that love ought to manifest itself in 

deeds rather than in words.” Fr. Salmon sees, therefore, that “Anne Schoenberger’s 

extraordinary gift is a deed that clearly manifests her love -- her love for her son, 

John, her love for the education that McQuaid Jesuit provided for him. Her 

bequest also clearly manifests her love for the young men who have benefited and 

who will continue to benefit for years to come from the Jesuit education that Anne 

Schoenberger valued so greatly.” 

Though she had lost her only child, Anne continued to embrace her son, John’s, 

memory through this scholarship fund. Knowing that she could help other young 

men by giving them the gift of a Jesuit education gave her great peace. Her niece, 

Ann Thompson Murphy, expressed it this way: “. . . the joy is alive in your 

McQuaid ways -- the sense of inner strength, outward sparkle, and loyal 

commitment to serving others -- this lives on through Anne and John 

Schoenberger’s names.”
