Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends of McQuaid Jesuit, 

From July 29 to August 2, I attended at Boston College what was officially called the “International 

Colloquium on Jesuit Secondary Education.” More than 400 delegates, representing more than 280 Jesuit 

institutions in 62 countries, gathered to discuss the strong global Jesuit network in secondary education. The 

Director of the Colloquium expressed the hope of those gathered in these words: that the gathering be 

“. . . the first step in broadening and deepening our collaborative efforts throughout our expansive global 

network.” 

The 35th General Congregation of the Society of Jesus described what these collaborative efforts are 

directed toward. “Serving Christ’s mission today means paying special attention to its global context. This 

context requires us to act as a universal body with a universal mission, realizing at the same time the radical 

diversity of our situations. It is as a worldwide community – and, simultaneously, as a network of local 

communities – that we seek to serve others across the world.” 

It is my hope that as you look through the pages of the Cauldron you will appreciate the collaborative 

efforts of so many engaged in serving Christ’s mission here at McQuaid Jesuit. The new wing, the renovated 

cafeteria, the technological upgrades, and the opening of the 6th grade all are intended to help our students 

become “fully and truly human,” dedicated to learning, dedicated to serving their communities and one 

another, and dedicated to God. The collaboration of the Carmelite Fathers in the classroom and in the 

Guidance Office has contributed such a wealth of learning and of love to our efforts. The trip to Italy, a first 

step in “paying attention to our global context,” opened to a larger world the eyes, hearts, and minds of our 

students who made the trip. 

Finally, as the Annual List of Donors indicates, the collaborative efforts and the overwhelming 

generosity of so many Alumni, Parents, and Friends help us to sustain and build up our local community as 

we seek to serve others here and across the world. 

To one and all I extend my deep and profound thanks for all you have done and continue to do as 

together we seek to “Serve Christ’s mission today.”

New Classrooms, Upgraded Cafeteria 

Highlight Changes at McQuaid 

Students definitely noticed changes when they 

arrived back on campus September 10. Not 

only was there a new six-classroom wing added 

to the north end of the school, but the cafeteria had 

a major facelift. Both were part of the 2012 summer 

construction projects, and will enhance our students' 

everyday experience here at McQuaid Jesuit. 

Adding 6,000 square feet was necessary, according to 

James K. Coughlin, S.J., principal. “There were two 

driving forces behind adding classroom space: the 

addition of a sixth grade, and moving to a full-credit 

Religion curriculum, which adds three new Religion 

faculty members.” In order for McQuaid to be in 

line with the other Jesuit schools and follow the new 

Bishop’s framework, we needed to have full-credit 

Religion. Until now we were the only school within 

our Province not to have full-credit Religion. The 

new space will be used for high school classes, 

allowing the sixth grade to be centralized within the 

Middle School. 

The six new classrooms have been designed for 

wireless computers each with a whiteboard, LCD 

projector for PowerPoint and laptop hook up and 24 

desks. Two rooms have iPads with wireless 

projection capabilities, two have tablet computers, 

and two have Elmos (document cameras). The 

classrooms will be occupied by David Dye and Tracey 

O’Brien from the Math Department, Ray Ruhlmann 

and Kathy Ruppert from the History Department, 

Marty Kilbridge from Religion, and Fred Schantz 

from English. 

The pizza oven is part of a completely revamped cafeteria. 

School Upgrades 

The six classroom addition on the north side of campus 

The other major upgrade was to our circa 1954 

cafeteria/kitchen. Students now can enjoy a larger 

variety of foods and healthier alternatives for 

breakfast and lunch. Made-to-order omelets, 

smoothies, and breakfast burritos are just some of the 

options. Renovating the cafeteria was necessary due 

to the outdated equipment that limited our options. 

The preparation and main serving area is equipped 

with convection ovens, new stoves, cook tops, and a 

Gourmet Brick pizza oven. 

David DelGaudio, manager of SAGE Dining Services, 

says, “We are focused on quality and freshness using 

local produce and vendors.” There is a specialty area, 

a salad bar, vegetarian bar, sauté station, grill 

station, and a new soft serve ice cream station. 

Burgers, chicken and fish…everything is made to 

order. Lunch has been extended to 40 minutes, so 

there should be no more waiting in lines if all you 

need to buy is a beverage. 

It was a long summer of construction; however, 

expanding our classroom space and renovating the 

cafeteria will help feed our students' minds and 

bodies on a daily basis. 

Technology upgrades:

cart -- can be checked out on a daily basis to 

accommodate a classroom of 30

September 2012 marks a new tradition at 

McQuaid Jesuit as (45) sixth graders walk the 

halls for the first time. The advantages of welcoming 

the youngest boys ever to enroll at McQuaid 

Jesuit are the extending of every 

dimension of Jesuit education. That is, the 

student gets an early start: 

• in the nurturing of his God-given academic 

potential, including crucial study habits, 

self-discipline, and a love of learning. 

• in the continued development of English 

language skills, especially grammar and 

writing, a key preparation for the rigors of language 

study in the years that follow. 

• in the formation of the Ignatian tradition of 

becoming “Men for Others.” That is, a bedrock belief 

in the imperative that we exist to share our talents, 

time, and treasure with all of humanity….in service to 

God. In fact, all that we do and say is in some sense 

God-centered. 

• in the nurturing of personal growth, including 

respect for self and for others, self-confidence, and 

friendship. 

While the sixth grade is, indeed, part of our Middle 

School, it is also set apart by the unique needs of sixth 

grade boys. The four sixth grade classrooms have 

deliberately been located nearest to the Middle School 

office. The sixth grade schedule is separate from that 

of the 7th and 8th grades and has been specifically 

designed for maximum flexibility. In fact, every part 

of the sixth grader’s day has been implemented to 

be age and gender appropriate. In a sense, the sixth 

grade will truly be a “school within a school.” 

Our three-member sixth grade faculty will teach only 

the sixth grade, again allowing a maximum use of 

time and resources. Scheduling is such that each

Our new sixth grade faculty will include: 

Mrs. Jean Hendricks, who comes to McQuaid from 

Seton Catholic elementary school in Brighton. Mrs. 

Hendricks brings with her a wealth of teaching 

experience, especially at the sixth-grade level. She is 

our special connection to Rochester Catholic 

education. 

Mr. David Demers is our special link to Jesuit 

education, having taught at Loyola, Montreal for 

several years. 

Mr. Will Chesebro has taught as a substitute teacher 

throughout the Rochester area, including at McQuaid. 

He has coached our track teams at both the middle 

school and high school levels. 

We are proud and excited to welcome these 

professionals as our founding sixth grade faculty. 

Each one is skilled, imaginative, and dedicated to 

the Jesuit conviction that God works through us and 

dwells uniquely in each one of our students.

How the Carmelites came to McQuaid 

Since McQuaid’s founding in 1954, the Jesuits and 

Jesuit ideals have been at the forefront of a 

McQuaid education, which is why so many 

prospective families, alumni, and others often ask, 

"How many priests are there these days?" It is 

important to prospective families to see the Jesuits 

present and for alumni, it’s important to see that 

Jesuit educators are still present. But there is more 

than one order of priests working at McQuaid. Since 

1970, the Carmelites have had a presence within 

McQuaid. How did they come to be at a Jesuit school, 

founded in the Jesuit tradition? 

Mount Carmel High School in Auburn, NY, opened 

its doors in the fall of 1955. While mainly a 

co-institutional high school, boys and girls did share 

some classes. With 17 Carmelite priests and 15 Sisters 

of St. Joseph among its faculty and staff, the school 

was run as a mission of the Carmelites. In the spring 

of 1970, however, the three area public schools 

combined into a new state-of-the-art public school. 

This led to a significant drop in enrollment for Mount 

Carmel, forcing the provincial of the Carmelite order 

for New York to close the school. 

When the Most Rev. Joseph Hogan, Bishop of the 

Diocese of Rochester at the time, received word that 

Mount Carmel would be closing, he requested that 

some of the Carmelites be allowed to stay within the 

Diocese. The provincial agreed and sent six 

Carmelites to Rochester: one to Bishop Kearney High 

School, two to Nazareth Academy, two to McQuaid 

Jesuit, and one to finish his sabbatical and then be 

assigned to a location. 

In the fall of 1970, Rev. Colman Logan, O. Carm., and 

Rev. Daniel Lynch, O. Carm., became the first 

non-Jesuit priests to teach and work at McQuaid 

Jesuit. In the fall of 1971, McQuaid welcomed Rev.

Joseph DeMaio, O. Carm. who had recently finished 

his sabbatical. Fr. Logan, an English teacher and 

debate team coach, spent five years at McQuaid. 

Fr. Lynch taught Math and Theology for three years 

before departing. Fr. DeMaio has taught Latin, 

French, and Theology and is still teaching at McQuaid 

today. He is joined by Rev. Jack Healy, O. Carm. 

Fr. Healy came to McQuaid in 1980, serving as a 

Theology teacher. Rev. Brian Murphy, O. Carm. 

joined the McQuaid faculty in 1987 as a Religion and 

Latin teacher. He remained at McQuaid until 2001. 

Fr. DeMaio and Fr. Healy are still present at 

McQuaid. 

The Carmelites date back to the 12th century and their 

founding on Mount Carmel. Three main elements 

characterize the Carmelites and their beliefs: prayer, 

fraternity, and service/ministry. Prayer is at the heart 

of their lives. In personal and communal prayer, the 

Carmelites are united with Christ and transformed by 

the Holy Spirit. Their belief in fraternity calls them to 

a shared common life of prayer, work, and 

relationships that challenge and strengthen them as 

they strive to love and serve one another. Finally, 

they believe that Christ calls them to witness to the 

kingdom by caring for others through service and 

ministry. Carmelites share a contemplative spirit and 

thirst for the living God in the midst of the people. 

Since 1970, the Jesuits and Carmelites have worked 

together at McQuaid striving for the same goal, which 

is a dedication to the Greater Glory of God. It is a 

blessing for McQuaid to have the Carmelite presence, 

and the school looks forward to many more years of 

their presence and teachings. 

So the next time someone asks how many priests are 

at McQuaid, the correct answer as of this publication 

is: five Jesuits and two Carmelites.

Students spend 10 Days in Italy 

Viva Italia! (Long live Italy!) This past June, 34 

McQuaid Jesuit students and five chaperones set 

out on a once-in-a-lifetime 10-day trip to Italy that 

was two years in the making. The trip was open to all 

McQuaid students who would be in 10-12th grade at 

the time of the trip. Its purpose was to not only 

enhance the college application, but to allow our 

young Knights to grow intellectually and personally 

as they navigatated a foreign culture and spoke a 

foreign language. Their confidence and maturity 

grew as they became better citizens of the world. 

The group visited Venice, Florence, Orvieto, 

Sorrento, Pompeii, Capri, and Rome. In Venice they 

took a private ferry to the island of Murano, where 

they witnessed a demonstration at the oldest glass 

factory of Italy. Era bellissimo! (It was 

beautiful!) In Florence, they had a blast cooking a 

meal of tagliatelle bolognese, polpettoni di carne, and 

schiacciata (a typical florentine cake) for dessert with 

our very own Italian Gordon Ramsey! The boys did 

great and it tasted delizioso! In Rome our Knights 

were gladiators for a day! They trained through the 

heat and fought to the death all while learning about 

the true history of the Roman gladiator. The group 

was also lucky to have Dan ‘84 and Kiki Mahar P’14, 

P’16 organize and donate a private tour of the Sistine 

Chapel...a truly unforgettable moment!

Another Successful Reunion Weekend 

Reunion Weekend is always a cause to celebrate 

and welcome back alumni. This year marked 

reunion classes ending in two's and seven's. 

It was exciting to have so many alumni come back 

on campus and join us for one of the many events 

planned for the weekend. 

The weekend was kicked off by the Father 

McNamara Alumni & Friends Golf Tournament, held 

once again at Shadow Pines Golf Club. Under clear 

blue skies, 133 golfers from the classes of 1962-2011 

gathered, reminisced, and played a great round of 

golf! As always, alumni traveled great lengths to be 

with us, from places including Georgia, Texas, 

Florida, and Puerto Rico. This year’s winners were 

Peter Schmitt ’02, Luke Shafer ’02, Andrew Burke ’02, 

and Matt Nazarenko ’02. After 18 holes and a full 

day, golfers gathered for the traditional Stag 

reception. More than 225 alumni and friends joined 

us for this year’s dinner and all had a great time! 

Saturday's “Family Fun Day” included a 

robotics demonstration, picnic, games, tours of the 

school, a bounce house, and an alumni Mass 

celebrated by McQuaid Jesuit President Edward F. 

The Father Noonan Distinguished Alumnus 

Award was established in 1992 to honor a 

McQuaid Jesuit alumnus who is an active 

supporter of the school, who has performed 

distinguished service for the Church or the 

community, and who has performed significant work 

in his field or profession to the extent it brings honor 

to McQuaid Jesuit. Each year, we recognize this 

alumnus during Reunion Weekend. 

This year’s Alumnus of the Year was Rod Cox-Cooper 

’85, Chief Executive Officer of Wilson 

Commencement Park. Wilson Commencement Park 

helps low-income, single-parent families transition 

from public assistance to financial independence and 

personal self-sufficiency. Since his graduation in 

1985, Rod has been very involved in the Rochester 

community. Rod has been recognized as one of the 

Rochester Business Journal’s "40 under 40" award 

honorees. He also has received the Dr. Samuel 

McCree Jr. Award for his efforts to improve the 

quality of life in Rochester, and the University of 

Dayton Distinguished Alumni Award. Rod has served 

on numerous not-for-profit boards and committees

Salmon, S.J. All outdoor activities were held on the 

Tom Seymour Field and the Bob Bradley Track, which 

is a great place for kids of all ages to play. This year 

more than 50 alumni and their families joined us for 

our afternoon of fun. 

It was great to hear the many memories and stories 

from Knights of all ages who traveled from near and 

far to be with us. Highly visible construction projects 

such as the addition of 6,000 square feet to the end of 

the North Wing added excitement to the day. 

McQuaid has a very bright future and our alumni 

community like to support that feeling of growth and 

change. Alumni who have not been back to campus 

in some time were beyond impressed with the state 

of the school. From the Deborah & John DiMarco 

’60 Field House to the new lockers, you could see the 

joy in our alumni as they proudly showed off “their 

school” to their families. 

Next year we will be celebrating Reunions for classes 

ending in 3’s and 8’s. If you are in a Reunion year, 

please save June 7-8, 2013 so you and your family

2012. Rod has crafted his life’s work around being a 

“Man for Others” and we are grateful that he has kept 

McQuaid Jesuit a part of his life.

Athletic Hall of Fame Welcomes Fourth Class 

McQuaid Jesuit held its fourth Athletic Hall of 

Fame ceremony on Saturday, June 9, in the 

Deborah & John DiMarco ’60 Field House. 

This year’s class included two teams, four individuals, 

and James J. Fischer, S.J., former President and 

Chancellor of McQuaid Jesuit. 

Fr. Fischer was honored for his 20 years of 

contribution to athletics at McQuaid Jesuit. Over the 

past two decades, Fr. Fischer was a constant presence 

at games at all levels. If a team was playing, he would 

make the effort to get there. He also was present at 

team Masses, banquets, and ceremonies. It would 

be hard to find a more faithful fan over the past two 

decades than Fr. Fischer. 

The 1963 football team was the first football squad 

inducted into the Athletic HOF. The team played 

in the pre-Section V era and had to travel beyond 

Monroe County to play. Represented on stage by Joe 

Miller ’63 and Jim Nakas ’64, the two players spoke 

on behalf of the team of the pride everyone felt for 

being inducted and what a humbling experience it 

was to be the first football team to receive the honor. 

The 1978-79 hockey team was the second team 

inducted that night. Represented by Tom Baglio '79, 

one of the team’s captains, this was the first McQuaid 

hockey team to sweep the Monroe County Hockey 

League regular season and playoff championships. 

Coached by 2011 McQuaid Jesuit Hall-of-Famer, 

the late Bob Pedersen, and assisted by the late Bob 

Schwartz, this tight-knit mix of experience and youth 

skated to McQuaid’s first-ever undefeated season. 

A majority of the team was present and had a very 

moving experience “coming home” to the halls of 

McQuaid Jesuit. 

Following the team inductions, the evening shifted 

toward the individual athletes. The first individual 

induction of the evening was Jim DeBloom ’91, 

inducted for his notable football career. One of three 

10 Athletic Hall of Fame 

captains on the team, Jim was a member of the 

All-Greater Rochester football team and received 

second team All-State honors. He received the ROTC 

Scholar Athlete of the Year award and went on to 

play at Harvard University, where he lettered all four 

years. Jim was honored to be a part of the evening. 

Peter Glavin ’80 was inducted for his career in track 

and cross country. He still holds the records that he 

set in the 3000m and 3200m while he was here. Pete 

was an avid runner and a supporter of the sport, until 

his passing in April 2010. Representing Peter on stage 

were his wife, and two children. Several members of 

Peter’s family also were in attendance. 

Peter Palermo ’81 was inducted into the Hall of Fame 

for his pitching and hitting skills that led the 

McQuaid Jesuit baseball team to its first Section V 

Championship. Peter went on to play baseball in 

college at Jacksonville University, where he earned 

All-Conference honors as a pitcher and designated 

hitter. Given his success at McQuaid and 

Jacksonville, Pete pitched professionally for the 

Baltimore Orioles from 1985-89. Pete currently 

coaches baseball at McQuaid, passing along his 

knowledge to current baseball Knights. 

Robert Zoeke ’84 was a member of the McQuaid 

Jesuit wrestling team and his intensity, ability, and 

love for the sport helped him excel to be one of the 

best wrestlers McQuaid has ever had. After 

McQuaid, Robert attended Virginia Military Institute 

on a full scholarship, where he wrestled for three 

years. He posted a collegiate record of 91-20. 

The Athletic Hall of Fame ceremony was deemed a 

huge success. It is a pleasure to have McQuaid’s 

former athletes and their families come back to 

campus for this moving and meaningful event. If you

Robert Keenan recently became the Program 

Manager and Transit Architecture Practice Leader for 

Canada with HDR. HDR is a global employee-owned 

firm providing architecture, engineering, consulting, 

construction, and related services through its various 

operating companies. 

1972 

Kevin Martin was inducted into the Rochester 

Bowling Hall of Fame for Meritorious Service. He is 

the owner/manager of Parkview Bowl in Rochester. 

V.J. Stanley recently finished his first book, "Stop the 

Tsunami in Youth Sports: Achieving Balanced 

Excellence and Health While Embracing the Value of 

Play for Fun." The book, currently available in 

e-book form, will be out in audio form this fall, and 

will come out in hard copy form in 2013. 

1973 

Ross Lanzafame was named chairman of the 

American Lung Association's national board of 

directors. He will serve a one-year term and work 

with the association's national headquarters staff to 

advance its mission of saving lives by improving lung 

health and preventing lung disease. Ross is a 

partner at the Rochester, NY law firm of Harter 

Secrest & Emery LLP. 

1975 

John Maxwell was one of 24 robotics mentors and 

coaches selected for the U.S. Air Force leadership 

training program. He is one of the co-leaders of the 

McQuaid Jesuit IgKNIGHTers robotics team. 

Maxwell was selected from about 250 teachers 

nationwide to participate in the program, which took 

place July 30 - 31, 2012, in Cape Canaveral, FL. 

1985 

Steve Carl is the principal owner of the Rochester 

area's first Dairy Queen. Dairy Queen has more than 

5,700 locations across the country. 

1990 

Joel DiMarco is president of Admar Supply 

Company, which ranked 13th on Access, Lift & 

Handlers magazine’s Top 30 Telehandlers list and 47th 

on the Rental Equipment Register Top 100 list. 

1992 

Christian Klein returned to Rochester to practice 

ophthalmology as a faculty member at the University 

of Rochester’s Flaum Eye Institute. 

1993 

Jason Turner competed in the 2012 Summer 

Olympics in London, his third Olympic games. Jason 

participated in the 10-meter air pistol event. 

1999 

Jason Downer took his first vows toward becoming a 

Jesuit on August 18, 2012. He is in the NY Province of 

the Society of Jesus. 

2000 

Dave Hunt is an instructor pilot in Jacksonville, FL. 

He also is an entrepreneur. Combining his 

dedication to fitness and athleticism, he has 

invented a new kind of jump rope system and 

recently launched a small business start up called

Jay Hoff moved to Southern China in February to 

work in an injection molding factory. The name of his 

company is Global Point Technology. 

Stephen Nemeth is a Captain in the Marine Corps, 

stationed at Quantico, VA, where he is a War 

Fighting Instructor at the Basic School. In January 

2012, he returned from his second tour of duty in 

Afghanistan.

Kyle Pudney was married to Kate Chantra on June 9, 

2012, in Columbia, SC. The couple resides in 

Lexington, SC.

Ryan Higman is serving in the Peace Corps as a 

Community Economic Development Volunteer in 

Costa Rica.

McQuaid Remembers 13

Here are just a few examples of how alumni, parents, and friends made a difference this past year. Supporting 

McQuaid Jesuit comes in all shapes and sizes. 

Griffin Hester '12 

Less than 15 hours after walking across the stage of the Eastman Theater to graduate from McQuaid Jesuit, 

Griffin Hester, Class of 2012, contacted the Institutional Advancement Office to pledge $5. He said, “I know 

you are going to call me anyway, so I’m just going to pledge it.” He stopped by the office the next day to pay 

it. Pamela White, Director of Development said, “I don’t think we have ever had a graduate make a pledge the 

day after graduation.” He is a true model of the “Grad at Grad:" Intellectually Competent, Loving, Religious, 

Open to Growth, Committed to Justice. 

Malcolm K. Bean '07 

In early June, Malcolm contacted the Advancement Office. He wanted to issue a 5th Year Anniversary 

Challenge to his fellow classmates. Malcolm would give two dollars for every one dollar his classmates gave 

up to a total of $1,000. This is quite a challenge from an alumnus who only graduated five years ago. Emails 

were sent to the class throughout the month of June, keeping the class updated on the challenge. As the end of 

June drew near, his fellow brothers rose to meet his challenge. In total, the Class of 2007 donated $2,520; their 

class goal was $2,000. Eleven donors from the class accepted the challenge, many of them giving more than the 

$10 that was asked for in the challenge. Malcolm is a fine example of being a “Man for Others.” 

Jean-Nil and Rejeanne Hugron, 2016 grandparents 

Rejeanne and Jean-Nil Hugron are grandparents of a current student. Although they live out of state, they are 

involved in their grandson’s daily life. They believe in Catholic education, and know their grandson is very 

happy at McQuaid. At the end of December, the Hugrons gave a generous gift to McQuaid, directed to our 

greatest need, the Annual Fund. The Hugrons said, "We are grateful for the religious education our grandson 

is receiving. McQuaid is a good basis for life. In today's world it is tough to receive the foundation we need." 

Dietlinde Payne, friend 

After Walter D. Payne’s ’65 death in 1996, Dietlinde Payne wanted to do something in memory of her 

husband. She established The Walter D. Payne ’65 Scholarship Fund in 1998 as a permanent memorial to 

honor her husband, and provide a partial tuition grant for incoming students in need. She has continued to 

add to this scholarship fund over the years. Most recently she bequeathed an IRA (Individual Retirement 

Account) to the fund through her will. The benefit to a donor of including McQuaid Jesuit in his/her will is to 

accomplish a philanthropic objective, and retain control of one’s assets during their lifetime. A bequest 

commitment is fulfilled from the residual estate. Most often, when naming the school as a beneficiary, one’s 

commitment is expressed as a percentage. Gifts such as Dietlinde’s are easy to do and very much appreciated 

by McQuaid Jesuit.

As Karen and David Hester watched their oldest son, Griffin, walk 

across the Eastman Theater stage on June 3, 2012, to get his 

diploma, another parent leaned over and said, “Aren’t you sad Griffin 

is graduating?” Karen’s reply: “We’re not leaving McQuaid, he is.” 

Like many McQuaid Jesuit parents, the Hesters are committed for 11 

straight years. During this time they will not only pay for three full 

tuitions, they will also: volunteer for Open House, attend the Knights 

Council Dinner, be football team parents, host/attend BASH parties, 

cheer on many sporting events, travel south for spring baseball, 

support the annual fund, bake for the faculty/staff appreciation 

lunch…and the list goes on. 

According to Karen and David, “You only get out, what you put in.” This is 

their personal view on life, and how they have raised their three boys. They 

are making a significant investment in McQuaid Jesuit. Not being from the Rochester area, nor Jesuit educated, 

they were not familiar with McQuaid. Fifteen years ago, Philip G. Judge S.J., Principal of McQuaid at that time, 

was visiting St. Louis Catholic School. Griffin was in preschool and his teacher, Mrs. Galusha (a graduate parent 

who had two sons attend McQuaid) introduced him to Fr. Judge as, “A member of the Class of 2012.” From 

that day on Griffin said he was going to McQuaid Jesuit. 

Karen and David like the parent involvement at McQuaid, saying, ”It’s a community, an extended family.” 

Whether or not you have two extra hours one week to help set up tables for a banquet, or you want to be a 

BASH Chair which takes months of planning, there is an opportunity for everyone. The Hesters look forward 

to the next five years, and feel, “If you are not involved, then what do you have to complain about?”

Endowed 

Scholarship Funds 

Throughout McQuaid Jesuit’s history, 

many donors have established “named” 

endowed scholarship funds. 

A donor may request that McQuaid 

Jesuit place their gift into a general, 

restricted, endowment fund where 

principal contributions remain intact. 

This fund is named after St. Francis 

Xavier, in honor of the school’s patron, 

and has been built from the gifts of 

generous donors throughout the 

history of McQuaid Jesuit. Other gifts 

are placed into previously named 

scholarship funds when requested. 

A fully endowed scholarship is 

approximately $223,000 for the 2012-13 

academic year; partially endowed 

scholarships range from $25,000- 

$222,999. Donors may establish a 

“named fund” with an initial funding 

requirement of $50,000. Only the income 

generated by the fund will be used to 

support McQuaid Jesuit’s mission, 

leaving the principal intact.

unless otherwise restricted by a gift 

agreement. It is a New York state law 

which dictates that annual distributions 

from permanent endowment funds 

are to be formulated using a series of 

prudent factors contained in the law. 

Endowed funds are prudently managed 

by the McQuaid Jesuit Board of 

Directors with the goal to maintain and 

grow these funds.

A 

former IBM Client Executive for multiple 

large, international clients of the IBM 

Company, Tim Nally joins McQuaid Jesuit 

as Vice President of Institutional Advancement. He 

brings to McQuaid an extensive sales background 

that has allowed him to develop and maintain strong, 

strategic business relationships, to the mutual benefit 

of IBM and his clients. 

Tim’s new role at McQuaid focuses on marketing and 

branding the school as well as the continued 

cultivation and development of additional major gifts. 

He also will work with the students to continue to 

grow the Simba Society, enhancing the Jesuit spirit 

and the pursuit of excellence as they strive to become 

"Men for Others." He will focus on the uniqueness of 

McQuaid Jesuit's “culture” which is centered around 

excellence in academics, athletics, performing and 

visual arts, and other pursuits. He also will engage 

alumni, parents, and friends in broader experiences 

within the school to enhance the McQuaid “family” 

spirit. 

Tim has stayed connected with McQuaid since 

graduating in 1967. He and his wife, Marabeth, are 

graduate parents of Matt ’98, Ben ’02, and A.J.’06. He 

is a former BASH Chair, has served on the 

Advancement Committee of the Board for the past 10 

years, and chairs 

the Athletic Hall of 

Fame Nominating 

Committee. Tim is 

a past President of 

the Alumni Council 

and in 2006 received 

McQuaid’s highest 

honor, the Knights 

Round Table, in 

recognition of his 

valued service to the 

school, its students, 

and its community.

“I am extraordinarily pleased to welcome Tim 

Nally ’67 as Vice President of Institutional 

Advancement," says McQuaid Jesuit President 

Edward F. Salmon, S.J. "He brings a wealth of 

enthusiasm for McQuaid Jesuit’s mission and has 

irrepressible energy and great plans for ‘getting the
