While preparing him for further education, his life’s work, and social interaction, McQuaid Jesuit reaches beyond these goals to produce a growing love of learning and enthusiasm for life that will enable him to meet ever-changing challenges. All involved with McQuaid Jesuit work to achieve this development by personal concern for each student, competitive educational programs, distinctive Jesuit spirit, and a formative sense of community. From the President Edward F. Salmon, S.J. Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends of McQuaid Jesuit, From July 29 to August 2, I attended at Boston College what was officially called the “International Colloquium on Jesuit Secondary Education.” More than 400 delegates, representing more than 280 Jesuit institutions in 62 countries, gathered to discuss the strong global Jesuit network in secondary education. The Director of the Colloquium expressed the hope of those gathered in these words: that the gathering be “. . . the first step in broadening and deepening our collaborative efforts throughout our expansive global network.” The 35th General Congregation of the Society of Jesus described what these collaborative efforts are directed toward. “Serving Christ’s mission today means paying special attention to its global context. This context requires us to act as a universal body with a universal mission, realizing at the same time the radical diversity of our situations. It is as a worldwide community – and, simultaneously, as a network of local communities – that we seek to serve others across the world.” It is my hope that as you look through the pages of the Cauldron you will appreciate the collaborative efforts of so many engaged in serving Christ’s mission here at McQuaid Jesuit. The new wing, the renovated cafeteria, the technological upgrades, and the opening of the 6th grade all are intended to help our students become “fully and truly human,” dedicated to learning, dedicated to serving their communities and one another, and dedicated to God. The collaboration of the Carmelite Fathers in the classroom and in the Guidance Office has contributed such a wealth of learning and of love to our efforts. The trip to Italy, a first step in “paying attention to our global context,” opened to a larger world the eyes, hearts, and minds of our students who made the trip. Finally, as the Annual List of Donors indicates, the collaborative efforts and the overwhelming generosity of so many Alumni, Parents, and Friends help us to sustain and build up our local community as we seek to serve others here and across the world. To one and all I extend my deep and profound thanks for all you have done and continue to do as together we seek to “Serve Christ’s mission today.” Sincerely and prayerfully, From the President 1
