Here are just a few examples of how alumni, parents, and friends made a difference this past year. Supporting McQuaid Jesuit comes in all shapes and sizes. Griffin Hester '12 Less than 15 hours after walking across the stage of the Eastman Theater to graduate from McQuaid Jesuit, Griffin Hester, Class of 2012, contacted the Institutional Advancement Office to pledge $5. He said, “I know you are going to call me anyway, so I’m just going to pledge it.” He stopped by the office the next day to pay it. Pamela White, Director of Development said, “I don’t think we have ever had a graduate make a pledge the day after graduation.” He is a true model of the “Grad at Grad:" Intellectually Competent, Loving, Religious, Open to Growth, Committed to Justice. Malcolm K. Bean '07 In early June, Malcolm contacted the Advancement Office. He wanted to issue a 5th Year Anniversary Challenge to his fellow classmates. Malcolm would give two dollars for every one dollar his classmates gave up to a total of $1,000. This is quite a challenge from an alumnus who only graduated five years ago. Emails were sent to the class throughout the month of June, keeping the class updated on the challenge. As the end of June drew near, his fellow brothers rose to meet his challenge. In total, the Class of 2007 donated $2,520; their class goal was $2,000. Eleven donors from the class accepted the challenge, many of them giving more than the $10 that was asked for in the challenge. Malcolm is a fine example of being a “Man for Others.” Jean-Nil and Rejeanne Hugron, 2016 grandparents Rejeanne and Jean-Nil Hugron are grandparents of a current student. Although they live out of state, they are involved in their grandson’s daily life. They believe in Catholic education, and know their grandson is very happy at McQuaid. At the end of December, the Hugrons gave a generous gift to McQuaid, directed to our greatest need, the Annual Fund. The Hugrons said, "We are grateful for the religious education our grandson is receiving. McQuaid is a good basis for life. In today's world it is tough to receive the foundation we need." Dietlinde Payne, friend After Walter D. Payne’s ’65 death in 1996, Dietlinde Payne wanted to do something in memory of her husband. She established The Walter D. Payne ’65 Scholarship Fund in 1998 as a permanent memorial to honor her husband, and provide a partial tuition grant for incoming students in need. She has continued to add to this scholarship fund over the years. Most recently she bequeathed an IRA (Individual Retirement Account) to the fund through her will. The benefit to a donor of including McQuaid Jesuit in his/her will is to accomplish a philanthropic objective, and retain control of one’s assets during their lifetime. A bequest commitment is fulfilled from the residual estate. Most often, when naming the school as a beneficiary, one’s commitment is expressed as a percentage. Gifts such as Dietlinde’s are easy to do and very much appreciated by McQuaid Jesuit. Special Assistant to the President, LeMoyne College Jesuit Community As Karen and David Hester watched their oldest son, Griffin, walk across the Eastman Theater stage on June 3, 2012, to get his diploma, another parent leaned over and said, “Aren’t you sad Griffin is graduating?” Karen’s reply: “We’re not leaving McQuaid, he is.” Like many McQuaid Jesuit parents, the Hesters are committed for 11 straight years. During this time they will not only pay for three full tuitions, they will also: volunteer for Open House, attend the Knights Council Dinner, be football team parents, host/attend BASH parties, cheer on many sporting events, travel south for spring baseball, support the annual fund, bake for the faculty/staff appreciation lunch…and the list goes on. According to Karen and David, “You only get out, what you put in.” This is their personal view on life, and how they have raised their three boys. They are making a significant investment in McQuaid Jesuit. Not being from the Rochester area, nor Jesuit educated, they were not familiar with McQuaid. Fifteen years ago, Philip G. Judge S.J., Principal of McQuaid at that time, was visiting St. Louis Catholic School. Griffin was in preschool and his teacher, Mrs. Galusha (a graduate parent who had two sons attend McQuaid) introduced him to Fr. Judge as, “A member of the Class of 2012.” From that day on Griffin said he was going to McQuaid Jesuit. Karen and David like the parent involvement at McQuaid, saying, ”It’s a community, an extended family.” Whether or not you have two extra hours one week to help set up tables for a banquet, or you want to be a BASH Chair which takes months of planning, there is an opportunity for everyone. The Hesters look forward to the next five years, and feel, “If you are not involved, then what do you have to complain about?” How can you make your son’s education at McQuaid Jesuit better?
