Vitec Energy
Improve your wind power forecasts with Aiolos WindPower!
Aiolos WindPower is the latest product from Vitec software and is designed for short-
term wind energy forecasting. Wind power is being used as never before and this has
created new challenges for energy forecasting. Aiolos is the leading load forecasting
software in the Nordic region and Aiolos WindPower is already gaining ground inter-
nationally.
The use of wind power has seen rapid growth in a
short period of time and in order to leverage this
renewable energy technology, precise energy forecasting
tools are required to minimize the variability
and uncertainty of wind power. Aiolos WindPower
can be used to forecast the energy output of a
single turbine, of an entire wind farm or of a whole
country’s wind production. Forecasts can be produced
for periods of half an hour up to 4 days long. Weather
forecasts for the current area are included in the
system and the accuracy of the forecasts is as high as
93% in installed areas.
The Aiolos WindPower system is configured with basic data
of the production units, such as the geographic placement
of the turbines, the maximum power, rotor diameter, hub
height and more. Based on this data, the program then
determines how each turbine reacts in various weather
situations. This then produces a model which describes
Aiolos WindPower
the local conditions on each site. From this model you can
produce a wind power production forecast.
Current meteorological models have trouble producing pre-
cise wind power forecasts as they are based on wind speed
and wind forecasts which are generally less accurate than
a temperature forecast. A wind forecast is afflicted with a
larger error margin due to the variability of wind speeds
included in a wind forecast. Inaccurate wind power forecasts
arise when the power curve of the turbine is merely correla-
ted to these wind forecasts.
Aiolos WindPower uses the MOS-technique which correlates
historical wind forecasts with the actual power generated
and applies this to future wind forecasts. This technique is
based on the direct relationship between wind forecasts
and the energy produced and removes the error inherent in
using wind speed and theoretical wind power. In this way,
the errors of wind forecasting are minimized to produce an
optimal wind power forecast.
