Welcome to Southampton Solent University- Video Transcript
Professor Van Gore, Vice-Chancellor of Southampton Solent University:
Congratulations for securing a place at Southampton Solent University. Going to University is a
privilege in our society, it’s also an opportunity and you need to seize that opportunity.
Over the next few weeks you will be inducted into the programmes you have chosen to study with
us, make the most of them. We’ve organised a lot more activities this year and they should help
familiarise yourself both with the University and to help make new friends.
I won’t say anymore than that, other than to wish you every success in your studies with us and if
you think we can improve anything then let us know. I think you’ll find that there are a lot of
improvements that we have already introduced this year; sports facilities and learning spaces. Over
the next few years we’re going to see a lot more exciting projects. Let us know what you think about
them but in the meantime just enjoy those first few weeks and get settled in.
Ali Golden, Student Support Services:
This might be the first time you’ve been away from home or the first time you’ve got to manage
your own finances and we realise that can be quite daunting. So there’s lots of support available for
you, if you’ve got any money questions or questions about the local area or you want to find out
about counselling or any of the other services come along to Students’ 1 st . One of the advisors will
be happy to help you. They’re also there just to have a chat if you’re feeling a bit homesick and a bit
lost in those first few weeks or at any time during your studies. They’re also here to talk about a
friend that you’re worried about.
We do realise how important it is to enjoy yourself and your time here and also to have a great
social life. Southampton has got plenty to offer. We just ask you to bear a few things in mind: be
alert and keep yourself safe while you’re out and about in the town, look after each other, don’t
walk home alone and also think about the local community; whether that’s people living in The
Polygon area, your neighbours or your flatmates in Student Residences. If you’re coming in late just
be aware of the noise that you’re making and just respect other people.
We work really hard with the Police and the local authorities to try and create a community and a
great atmosphere here in Southampton. The Police will be looking out for anti-social behaviour and
people who have been using too much alcohol so just be aware that you might find yourself in
trouble if you’re out causing a lot of noise and nuisance late at night.

To make the most of your time here it’s a really good idea to look after yourself that includes looking
after your health and well-being, so making sure you eat well, you don’t drink too much and you get
enough rest.
So if you think you may have a problem with alcohol or drug use come and get some help and
support, we can refer you on and we can talk to you in confidence. We won’t pass that information
on. Again, if you’re worried about a flatmate who you think may be over doing things, come and get
some advice.
Finally, I’d like to wish you all the best of luck with your studies.
Section Inspector Doug Ashman, Hampshire Constabulary:
Hello, my name’s Doug Ashman, I’m the Sector Inspector for Central Southampton and I lead a team
of Police Officers who are here to make sure that we can keep you safe while you’re studying, living
and enjoying Southampton as a city.
Firstly, Southampton is a fantastically safe city to live in, to work in and to study in and certainly I’d
hope that many of you would want to stay in Southampton for the future. Really importantly, some
of my colleagues are going to speak to you about some of the things we do to try to keep you safe
and make sure your time at Solent University is as enjoyable and safe as possible.
PC Jeanette Denton, Engagement Officer, Hampshire Constabulary:
Hi, I’m PC Jeanette Denton, I’m the Engagement Officer for The Polygon, the Solent Student
Residences and also, the University campus. My job role is to engage with you guys and everybody in
the community and to make sure everyone’s having a really good and safe time and are looking after
each other.
When you come to Southampton we expect you to act like an adult. We want you to have fun and
enjoy yourself and your time here. We also want you to be responsible for how you conduct
yourself.
When you drink, please remember to drink responsibly; don’t drink too much and make yourself
vulnerable to crime and please ensure all your valuables are kept safe. When you are going home,
make sure you are going home with a friend; either use a registered pre-booked taxi, get a bus or
walk with someone that you know. Don’t walk on your own if you can help it and make sure your
valuables are hidden.
Southampton is an alcohol-controlled zone, this means it is a ‘Designated Public Place’ which gives
me and the PCSOs the right to take alcohol off you if you are drinking in the street. Please remember
when you go out that you alcohol should be in sealed containers because if it is open we will be
likely to take it off you.

Noise nuisance is considered anti-social behaviour. Please remember to keep the noise down if you
are walking home late at night but also, most importantly, when you’re at home playing loud music.
Please respect your neighbours and remember, not everyone is a student who lives next door. In
recent times, anti-social behaviour has really come up to the forefront of Policing and sometimes we
have to let your Faculty know. So please remember to keep the noise down and respect your
neighbours.
Colin Pollard, Southampton Licensing Link:
Hello, welcome to Southampton. I represent Southampton Licensing Link which is a group of pub,
club and nightclub owners in the city. We get together once a month and discuss Southampton’s
nightlife; how we can make it better, how we can make improvements and how we can make it
safer.
One of the schemes which we currently operate is called the ‘Red Card’ scheme. It’s designed to
keep all the persistent troublemakers out of the city and it’s one of the ways we help to keep
Southampton safe for you guys. The idea behind the ‘Red Card’ scheme is that if you are issued a
‘Red Card’ you are barred from all venues which participate in the scheme so those troublemakers
are out of the city and it’s there to be your safe environment. We look forward to seeing you in the
new term.
PCSO Fiona Jarvis and PCSO Simon Ricketts, Hampshire Constabulary:
A massive welcome to Southampton City Centre. I’m PCSO Fiona Jarvis, I am a PCSO in The Polygon
area and this is my colleague, PCSO, Simon Jarvis, who covers The Polygon area as well.
We are both generally on foot patrol but sometimes we’re on bicycles so if you see either of us make
sure you come and have a chat and say hello. Our idea is that you all keep safe and have a good time
but are also mindful when having fun and enjoying yourself.
Like my colleague said, me and Fiona are always around The Polygon, we always help out with
projects that the Uni are doing. We drive Eco Ernie and help residents and students. If they get lost,
we give them directions. Always come and have a chat with us, we’re always there to help. Stay safe.
