In this issue, you will find a full-page article regarding<br />
the appreciation letter from the Custodian of the Two<br />
Holy Mosques King Fahad Bin Abdulaziz praising our<br />
Annual Report. He encourages management and staff<br />
to continue to work together to provide excellent health<br />
services to the community.<br />
Another exciting accomplishment for KFSH&RC-<br />
Jeddah is passing the Joint Commission International<br />
Accreditation (JCIA). We were informed that the<br />
Hospital passed its 2 nd accreditation survey and expect<br />
to receive the certificate by October. Full coverage<br />
of the accreditation survey will be published in an<br />
upcoming issue of <strong>Sea</strong> Script based on information<br />
provided by the Planning & Utilization office.<br />
Achievements and programs such as these should be<br />
shared with the staff and the community. Without<br />
your input we would not have this type of information<br />
to publish in the newspapers or in this newsletter.<br />
Your achievement is everyone’s success and it is<br />
KFSH&RC-Jeddah’s accomplishment, too. Please<br />
take time to share your accomplishments with us, be<br />
they personal or as a result of a team effort, so others<br />
can be made aware of our accomplishments through<br />
this newsletter and media articles.<br />
Don’t forget! Notify us of you or your Department’s<br />
achievements so we can share it and arrange for photos<br />

Although I was confident we would do well in the recent JCIA<br />
survey, it is still encouraging to have the unbiased opinion of the<br />
surveyors to confirm the excellence of our operations. I offer<br />
my congratulations as well as a sincere “Thank You” to each and<br />
every one of you.<br />
I understand and appreciate the enormous preparation that was<br />
put forth to ensure the Hospital was ready for the actual survey<br />
but stress we must not lose sight of the fact that each and every<br />
system in the hospital has been established with the ultimate<br />
goal of providing excellent patient care. Therefore, it is of the<br />
utmost necessity keep our focus on maintaining and upgrading<br />
our systems and policies & procedures on a continual basis to<br />
ensure our patients are served to the best of our ability and that<br />
they are aware our focus is to maintain the standard that has been<br />
existence at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research<br />
Centre for the past 30 years.<br />

WALKING AFTER MANY YEARS OF DISABILITY<br />
Three Wheelchair-bound Children Walk after Treatment at KFSH&RC- Jeddah<br />
The Pediatric Neurology<br />
service at KFSH&RC-<br />
Jeddah has been quite<br />
busy with large volume of<br />
referrals and consultations,<br />
particularly for difficult<br />
and complicated patients.<br />
The division has been<br />
quite productive in terms<br />
of scientific activities and<br />
international publications.<br />
Dr. Mohammed M.S. Jan who is an<br />
Associate Professor & Consultant of<br />
Pediatric Neurology, and Director<br />
of the Pediatric Neurology training<br />
program announced the successful<br />
treatment of three wheelchair bound<br />
children who became ambulatory<br />
after many years of disability. They<br />
were seen by many physicians<br />
in different hospitals and had<br />
many treatments with no benefit.<br />
They all responded dramatically<br />
to treatment with L-dopa at<br />
KFSH&RC-Jeddah.<br />
The first child was an 11-yearold<br />
girl referred with progressive<br />
lower limb spasticity diagnosed<br />
as hereditary spastic paraplegia.<br />
She became wheelchair bound<br />
over the prior 3 years. Ten days<br />
after L-dopa treatment, she was<br />
able to walk unassisted. The<br />

undiagnosed progressive<br />
n e u r o d e g e n e r a t i v e<br />
disorder. They had<br />
generalized progressive<br />
motor and speech<br />

hypertonia, and walking<br />
difficulties. They became<br />
wheelchair bound over the prior 4<br />
and 6 years, respectively. The 3 rd girl<br />
developed bilateral foot deformities<br />
that necessitated corrective orthopedic<br />
surgery in another institution. Both<br />
girls were able to ambulate with<br />
assistance within 2-3 weeks of Ldopa<br />
treatment. All 3 children were<br />

A letter of appreciation was addressed to Dr. Tariq Linjawi, CEO to commend<br />
Mr. Nidal Salameh, Corporate Nursing Coordinator, Corporate Patient Services-<br />
Business Affairs for the significant support he extended to the American<br />
Consulate Staff in Jeddah following the recent terrorist attack. Mr. Salameh<br />
assisted in sorting out insurance related issues, which were impending the care<br />
of locally employed staff at the Consulate. Mr. Salameh’s pleasant and polite<br />
manner were specially mentioned. To quote from the letter, “He is a credit to<br />
the hospital...”<br />

valued staff member of KFSH&RC-Jeddah.<br />

They had a rare disorder called<br />
dopa-responsive dystonia (Segawa<br />
disease), which was described in<br />
1976. The motor disability usually<br />
begins at 1-12 years of age, most<br />
often with progressive dystonia in the<br />
feet and gait alterations. It should be<br />
considered in any child who presents<br />
with dystonia of unknown etiology<br />
because it responds so dramatically<br />
to L-dopa. All our cases were<br />
referred for further evaluation of their<br />
diagnoses and management, and all<br />
had initial misdiagnoses. Our findings<br />
were presented internationally at the<br />

Societies in Paris (Eur J Neurol<br />
2004;11(2):254) and nationally<br />
at the 10 th Pan Arab Union of<br />
Neurological Science meeting<br />
in Jeddah. The findings were<br />

Blood Donation During the Saudi<br />
Healthcare & Hospital Exhibition<br />

at the Jeddah International<br />
& Exhibition Center more<br />
than 600 citizens and<br />
expatriates donated blood<br />
at the KFSH&RC mobile<br />
blood bank. Dr. Yaser<br />
Al-Ghamdi, Director of<br />
Health Affairs, Makkah<br />
Area, inaugurated the<br />
unit, praising it and the<br />
blood donation service it<br />
provides for patients.<br />
According to Dr. Nabila<br />
Al Baz, Acting Chairman,<br />
Pathology & Laboratory<br />
Medicine, KFSH&RC-<br />
Jeddah, this mobile blood donation<br />
clinic is designed for blood collection<br />
from different areas, and represents<br />
the Hospital’s first participation in<br />
the exhibition. This clinic, Dr. Al-Baz<br />
added, is a mobile medical laboratory<br />
containing complete medical<br />
On April 28, 2005 sixteen executives from<br />
King Faisal Specialist Hospital and<br />
Research Centre-Jeddah attended a training<br />
workshop sponsored by McKinsey and<br />
Company in Kitzbuhel, Austria. McKinsey<br />
and Company converted the old and rundown<br />
“Grand Hotel” in this small Austrian alpine<br />
skiing village into its international training<br />
center where it trains new McKinsey<br />
consultants as well as a few honored clients.<br />
Although the weather was wonderful, the<br />
scenery beautiful and the mountains beckoned;<br />
there was little time for the group to enjoy the<br />
location since the workshop began at 8:00<br />
o’clock in the morning and ran until 7:30 in the<br />
evening, daily. The workshop was facilitated by<br />
McKinsey consultants, expert in their fields, and<br />
covered the tools and techniques the McKinsey<br />
consultants employ to help their clients achieve<br />
results. Topics covered included:<br />
·• problem solving,<br />
·• teamwork,<br />
·• operations and facilitating<br />

equipment and is provided with a team<br />
of phlebotomists who take blood from<br />
donors and send it to the Hospital’s<br />
main medical laboratory. This<br />
process supplies all blood groups to<br />
the hospital blood bank and provides<br />
patients with the blood they need. It<br />
is worth mentioning that this clinic is<br />
the first of its kind in the<br />
Makkah Area.<br />
Dr. Al Baz noted<br />
an enhanced awareness<br />
regarding the importance<br />
of donating blood in<br />
order to save the lives of<br />
patients. Pre-donation<br />
laboratory infectious<br />
disease screenings, sugar<br />
and blood pressure tests,<br />
blood grouping, weight<br />
measuring and other<br />
investigations are carried<br />
out free of charge in order<br />
to ascertain the donor’s<br />
health before a blood<br />
donation card is issued.<br />
The CEO of the<br />
Hospital, Dr. Tariq Linjawi, extended<br />
his thanks to Dr. Al-Ghamdi for<br />
visiting the mobile blood donation unit,<br />
and to all blood donors who took part<br />
in this campaign. He also extended his<br />
thanks to Al-Harithy Company and to<br />
all organizers of the event.<br />

within the organization.<br />
The attendees were very complimentary<br />
concerning the content of the workshop and<br />
what they were able to learn. But, many<br />
of the attendees voiced the opinion that<br />
the feeling of teamwork they were able to<br />
develop at the workshop was one of the most<br />
desirable outcomes. Even though most of those<br />
whoattended had worked with one another for<br />
several years, there was a consensus that they<br />
had learned much more about each other that<br />
will make working together easier and more<br />
productive in the future. Besides making<br />
progress on the strategic initiatives, which<br />
was the chief reason for the workshop, one<br />
of the main tasks of the attendees is now to<br />
disseminate the knowledge to others in the<br />
organization. The workshop is a great example<br />
of how the strategic partnership with McKinsey<br />
and Company will have positive effects on the<br />
operation of the hospital well into the future.
Our News<br />
KFSH&RC-Jeddah Ratifies an<br />
Agreement with Ernst & Young<br />

KFSH&RC-Jeddah recently formalized<br />
an agreement with Ernst & Young, an<br />
internationally recognized accounting and<br />
auditing company. The agreement was signed by<br />
Dr. Tariq Linjawi, Chief Executive Officer and<br />
by Dr. Abdullah Baeshen, representative of Ernst<br />
& Young’s partner company in Jeddah.<br />
According to this agreement, the company<br />
will perform an inclusive audit of all rules and<br />
regulations currently existing in the Hospital’s<br />
various financial and administrative departments.<br />
It will also design and implement a new internal<br />
auditing program, with the cooperation of the<br />
appropriate hospital departments.<br />
A previous consultation services agreement<br />
has also been ratified with the same company<br />
for a major restructuring of computer systems<br />
in order to improve the functions of Finance and<br />
Logistics. Once this is completed, the next step<br />
will be to have all hospital computers linked<br />
to one unified system, which will ensure more<br />
efficiency and higher accuracy for the overall<br />
internal audit.<br />
Dr. Tariq Linjawi indicated hospital<br />
management will continue to look for ways to<br />
improve financial and administrative systems,<br />
which, in turn, will provide improved internal<br />
auditing results. Appropriate departmental staff<br />
will be asked to contribute to the decisionmaking<br />
processes on an on-going basis.<br />

On May 11, 2005, Dr. Hussein Al Furayah, Director, Saudi Council, visited the King Faisal<br />
Specialist Hospital & Research Center-Jeddah. Dr. Tariq Linjawi, Chief Executive Officer; Dr.<br />
Abdullah Al-Amoudi and Dr. Omar Al Amari, Director and Deputy Director, respectively, of<br />
Academic and Training Affairs welcomed and met him.<br />
Dr. Al Furayah visited several areas such as the Dental Clinic, Outpatients, Cardiology, Radiology,<br />
Emergency Services, Cath Lab and ICU. He also met with program directors and Saudi diploma<br />
students.<br />

Do No Harm<br />

We always stress to<br />
our hospital staff<br />
that they should keep<br />
trying to protect their<br />
patients from acquired<br />
infections that health<br />
care workers could<br />
unintentionally give to Dr. Samar Badreddine<br />
patients.<br />
That is not the only<br />
important goal of the Infection Control<br />
Service. As important to us is to protect<br />
“you”, our hospital staff, from infections<br />
that you could get from patients, or that<br />
you could give to each other.<br />
You may wonder how can you give<br />
your colleague an infection? One way is<br />
by throwing needles and sharps in regular<br />
wastebaskets, instead of discarding them<br />
in “sharp” dispensers. By doing that,<br />
your colleagues could inadvertently get<br />
pricked by that needle, which could be<br />
contaminated with blood from patients<br />
who are HBV, HCV or HIV positive. For<br />
that purpose, “sharp” disposal boxes are<br />
placed in every single patient room of our<br />
facility. This issue has been problematic<br />
especially over the last month, when we<br />
had increasing reports of staff getting<br />
needle pricks because the needles<br />
were misplaced. In one instance, HBV<br />
transmission was a concern. Our staff’s<br />
attention to this issue is essential in order<br />
to make our work environment safer.<br />
Remember that the “Do No Harm”<br />
in the Hippocratic oath that most of us<br />
took upon graduation, not only refers to<br />
patients, but also to colleagues.<br />

Jeddah Dental Esthetic<br />
Conference 2005<br />

The Department of Dentistry at King Faisal<br />
Specialist Hospital & Research Center-Jeddah<br />
recently organized the Jeddah Dental Esthetic<br />
Conference, which was held at the InterContinental<br />
Hotel under the patronage of HRH Prince<br />
Abdulmajeed Bin Abdulaziz, Prince of Makkah Al<br />
Mokarrama. The conference was opened on behalf<br />
of His Highness by Dr. Yasser Al Ghamdi, Director<br />
of Heathcare, Western Region, on Monday, 16 Rabi<br />
Al Awal, 1426.<br />
The conference focused on the importance of<br />
esthetic dentistry as one of the fastest growing<br />
dental professions. The days of “drill and fill” are<br />
changing into the age of beautiful smiles. Ten<br />
speakers emphasized the philosophy of beauty in<br />
dentistry and the latest advances in the world of<br />
implants, cosmetic dentistry, photography, and the<br />
best methods for teeth treatment. Lectures were<br />
given on such topics as ‘Implants in the Esthetic<br />
Zone’, ‘The Art of Smile Creation’, ‘Extreme<br />
Makeover: A dream comes true’, and many other<br />
scientific and interesting topics.<br />
The conference was associated with two main<br />
exhibitions: a photography exhibition where the<br />
most famous photographers of Jeddah showed<br />
images of both old and new Jeddah, and an exhibition<br />
for brand name dental supply companies.<br />
The conference was very successful and well<br />
received by a wide range of attendees who came<br />
from various places in the Kingdom and the Gulf<br />
Area.

Affairs, organized the Third<br />
International Pediatric Update<br />
(Pediatric Update 2005) during<br />
the period from 18-20 th April,<br />
2005.<br />

Committee, said that more<br />
than 50 papers were presented<br />
during this 3-day symposium<br />
covering most aspects of<br />
pediatric medicine and surgery.<br />
The meeting was accredited by<br />
the Saudi Council for Health<br />
Specialities for 15 CME hours<br />
and also included 6 workshops.<br />
The attendance was<br />
extraordinary, which indicates<br />
the success of all the scientific<br />
KFSH&RC-Jeddah activities.<br />
Polycystic Ovary<br />
Syndrome<br />

Endocrinology and Metabolism<br />
American University of Beirut<br />
Polycystic ovary syndrome is a condition that affects<br />
about one in every ten women of childbearing<br />
age. The disease is a result of hormonal imbalance<br />
and centers around one main abnormality - the lack<br />
of regular ovulation. For the diagnosis, two of the<br />
following are required: irregular menstrual cycles;<br />
hyperandrogenism (meaning high male hormone levels<br />
with symptoms such as acne and hirsutism), and/or<br />
cysts on ovarian ultrasound. The disease must to be<br />
differentiated from other conditions, which may have<br />
similar symptoms. Consequences of the above are<br />
infertility, high miscarriage rate, and risk of endometrial<br />
cancer.<br />
About half of the women with polycystic ovary<br />
syndrome have a condition of ‘insulin resistance’.<br />
Having high insulin levels has been associated with a<br />
certain metabolic phenotype, such as fat accumulation<br />
around the waste line, high blood pressure, and<br />
abnormal lipid profile. This condition is referred to as<br />
‘metabolic syndrome’ and puts the patient at increased<br />
risk to develop diabetes mellitus and heart disease.<br />
Therefore, polycystic ovarian syndrome is a relatively<br />
common condition with wide and far-reaching illeffects<br />
on health. Its treatment is long-term and may<br />
need to target both the reproductive and the metabolic<br />
abnormalities.<br />
Dr. Mona Nasrallah is a Consultant Endocrinologist<br />
at the American University of Beirut. She was among<br />
many other distinguished national and international<br />
speakers at the 3rd Annual International Women’s Health<br />
Update Symposium, organized by the Department of<br />
Medicine, King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research<br />
Center – Jeddah. Polycystic ovaries was just one of<br />
the many important topics covered during this medical<br />
symposium at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, which took<br />
place between March 29-30, 2005.<br />

Consultant Cardiologist said<br />
that 60% of these surgeries<br />
pertain to patients with pediatric<br />
cardiac congenital defects and<br />
40% to adult cardiac patients.<br />
Adult surgeries include<br />
coronary artery implantation<br />
and repair/replacement of<br />
cardiac valves.<br />
The Hospital has successfully<br />
carried out lung implantation<br />
surgery and is fully prepared<br />
to perform heart transplantation<br />
surgery as well. The Hospital<br />
utilizes an artificial temporary<br />
heart to rehabilitate pediatric<br />
patients after complex<br />
surgeries.<br />
Dr. Jamjoom pointed out that<br />
the success rate of open-heart<br />
surgeries is high, approximately<br />
97%. This success demands<br />
a collaborative team effort<br />
from cardiologists, including<br />
four pediatric cardiologists,<br />
anesthesiologists, intensivists,<br />
operating room personnel, and<br />
highly competent nursing and<br />
technical staff. KFSH&RC-<br />
Jeddah is a unique center in<br />
the western region possessing<br />
complete resources enabling<br />
it to treat cardiac congenital<br />
deformities in the western<br />
region.<br />

Although the<br />
exact rate of heart<br />
disease is still<br />
undetermined, Dr.<br />
Jamjoom warned<br />
of an increasing<br />
rate if we take into<br />
account the increase<br />
in the number of<br />
cigarette smokers<br />
and individuals<br />
suffering from<br />
obesity, hypertension problems,<br />
as well as the lack of exercise.<br />
These are all considered<br />
constituent risk factors of<br />
heart disease. According to Dr.<br />
Jamjoom’s speculation, 7-8%<br />
of the kingdom’s population<br />
is afflicted with heart disease,<br />
secondary to one of the abovementioned<br />
risk factors; of<br />

these 30-40% are<br />
hypertensive and<br />
12-15% are diabetic.<br />
Dr. Jamjoom added<br />
that, of the hospital’s<br />
adult cardiac patients,<br />
50% are diabetic and<br />
50-60 % have raised<br />
cholesterol levels.<br />
These are secondary<br />
factors related to<br />
their life style,<br />
poor nutrition, obesity, use of<br />
hydrogenated oils and poor<br />
awareness of the risks of high<br />
cholesterol levels.<br />
Dr. Jamjoom pointed out that<br />
the hospital’s Cardiovascular<br />
Disease department holds<br />
two campaigns each year at<br />
one of Jeddah’s commercial<br />
centers. The purpose of these
campaigns, known as “For a<br />
Healthy Heart”, is to enhance<br />
public awareness of heart<br />
disease. A team of medical staff,<br />
sports medicine specialists and<br />
physiotherapists contribute to<br />
these campaigns by providing<br />
the public with guidelines for<br />
protection from heart disease,<br />
testing cholesterol levels and<br />
measuring blood pressure for<br />
individuals and predicting the<br />
likelihood of heart disease<br />
occurring in the next ten years.<br />
Dr. Jamjoom recommends<br />
reducing the use of nonsaturated<br />
oils, such as olive/<br />
cornflower oils, and avoiding<br />
saturated oils such as animal<br />
and hydrogenated oils that<br />
are considered risk factors.<br />
Reheating/reusing oils,<br />
including non-hydrogenated<br />
oils, is also considered a<br />
harmful practice.<br />
In the course of his<br />
comments regarding the<br />
cardiology outpatient clinics<br />
of the KFSH&RC-Jeddah,<br />
Dr. Jamjoom noted that our<br />
cardiologists treat patients<br />
according to their own subspecialty.<br />
Each staff membar<br />
received their training at<br />
recognized international<br />
medical institutions and has<br />
significant experience in<br />
research work.<br />
He indicated that our cardiac<br />
patients are managed according<br />
to accepted standards and best<br />
practice principles, which would<br />
be evident to any professional<br />
of this medical discipline.<br />
This is complimented by the<br />
availability of sophisticated<br />
medical equipment which can<br />
be compared to that available<br />
in many western countries<br />
including the U.S. The clinic<br />
runs morning and evening<br />
sessions and highly qualified<br />
nursing and technical staff (from<br />
areas such as Radiology and<br />
Laboratory) assist the process<br />
of making sound diagnostic<br />
judgements.<br />
As part of its support to<br />
the nationalization policy,<br />
Dr. Jamjoom indicated that<br />
the Cardiovascular<br />
Department of KFSH&RC-<br />
Jeddah is a pioneer<br />
center in the area that<br />
provides training to Saudi<br />
technicians in the fields of<br />
radiology, cardiography<br />

The Hospital<br />
established the first<br />
center in the Kingdom for<br />
diagnosing and managing<br />
adult congenital cardiac<br />
defects. Department<br />
management actively<br />
seeks new research and<br />
embraces the most recent<br />
technologies in the field of<br />
cardiology.<br />
The Department organizes<br />
four medical conferences on<br />
cardiology and recent advances<br />
in cardiac management every<br />
year. Several workshops in<br />
certain sub-specialties, such as<br />
echocardiography and pediatric<br />
intensive care were organized<br />
last year.<br />
International cooperation<br />
agreements have been<br />
established between the<br />
Cardiovascular Department of<br />
KFSH&RC-Jeddah and centers<br />
in Europe and the United<br />
States. These collaborations<br />
include academic and<br />
medical component and are in<br />
association with centers such<br />
as George Pompido Hospital<br />
in Paris, Cleveland Clinic<br />
and Mass General Hospital in<br />
Boston, USA. The Department<br />
also undertakes field and<br />
clinical research projects such<br />
as the treatment of cardiac<br />
failure by changing the anticellular<br />

A Little Big Miracle<br />

The date of January 20, 2005, turned out to be a very special<br />
day filled with joy for a family in Jeddah because their baby<br />
girl was born.<br />
Though small, she proved herself to be strong. She was delivered<br />
prematurely in King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Center-<br />
Jeddah at 23 weeks + 5 days of gestational age, weighed only 565<br />
grams and had a length of 31.5 cm. Now she is proud to weigh 2.57<br />
kg at the age of 151 days and measures 48cm.<br />
According to research done and evidence based practice, the<br />
survival rate for premature babies in this gestational age group<br />
is 20-30%. Furthermore, the percentage of babies followed up in<br />
this gestational age group in later developmental stages with no<br />
complications is 10%. This baby is really a little big miracle.<br />
She was diligently taken care of by various healthcare<br />
professionals with international qualifications and experience. The<br />
attending Consultant Neonatologist, Dr. Ali Mersal and the rest<br />
of the nursing and medical staff are fully supporting the baby and<br />
family and look forward to follow the baby’s progress.<br />

Success Story<br />
One day, a poor boy who was selling goods from door<br />
to door to pay his way through school, found he had only<br />
one thin dime left, and he was hungry.<br />
He decided he would ask for a meal at the next house.<br />
However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman<br />
opened the door. Instead of a meal he asked for a drink<br />
of water. She thought he looked hungry so brought him<br />
a large glass of milk. He drank it slowly, and then asked,<br />
how much do I owe you?”<br />
You don’t owe me anything,” she replied. “Mother has<br />
taught us never to accept pay for a kindness.”<br />
He said..... “Then I thank you from my heart.”<br />
As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger<br />
physically, but his faith in God and man was strong also.<br />
He had been ready to give up and quit.<br />
Many year’s later that same young woman became<br />
critically ill. The local doctors were baffled. They finally<br />
sent her to the big city, where they called in specialists to<br />
study her rare disease.<br />
Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation.<br />
When he heard the name of the town she came from, a<br />
strange light filled his eyes.<br />

Immediately he rose and went down the hall of the<br />
hospital to her room. Dressed in his doctor’s gown he<br />
went in to see her. He recognized her at once.<br />
He went back to the consultation room determined<br />
to do his best to save her life. From that day he gave<br />
special attention to her case.<br />
After a long struggle, the battle was won. Dr. Kelly<br />
requested the business office to pass the final bill<br />
to him for approval. He looked at it, then wrote<br />
something on the edge and the bill was sent to her<br />
room. She feared to open it, for she was sure it would<br />
take the rest of her life to pay for it all. Finally she<br />
looked, and something caught her attention on the<br />
side of the bill. She read these words.....<br />
“Paid in full with one glass of milk”<br />

Tears of joy flooded her eyes as her happy<br />
heart prayed: “Thank You, God, that Your love has<br />

a “STRESS REDUCTION<br />
DAY” held on the 22 nd June. The<br />
original idea for the day came<br />
from Dr.Linjawi, our CEO. He<br />
sensed that hospital employees<br />
were going through a stressful<br />
time especially with preparations<br />
for the JCIA survey, My Care<br />
implementation and much more<br />
that everyone needed some<br />
stress relief. So a week before<br />
the Stress Reduction Day was<br />
held, the G2 group met and<br />
discussed the idea. The first<br />
thing that came to my mind is<br />
“like what only a week ahead<br />
plus our other responsibilities.<br />
NO WAAAAAY!” Then we<br />
started the hard work; planning,<br />
communication, typing, printing<br />
…so much more and honestly<br />
we were really afraid that we<br />

I bet many of you are asking<br />
yourself “what is the G2 Group?”<br />
Well let me tell you the whole<br />
story. First of all G2 means<br />
generation 2, or simply the new<br />
generation who will take the lead<br />
of this organization in the future.<br />
The idea of G2 started when<br />
Dr.Bahabri and Dr.Linjawi were<br />
discussing ways in which they<br />
could share tools and techniques<br />
they had learned from a recent<br />
workshop sponsored by the<br />
McKinsey and Company with<br />
the rest of the hospital staff.<br />
As they spoke, the idea of<br />
identifying a group of bright,<br />
young hospital employees who<br />
represented the future of the<br />
hospital occurred to them. They<br />
thought that when the group of<br />
young people was identified, the<br />
current leaders could give them<br />
support, advice, education and<br />
an opportunity to show what<br />
they were capable of. The G2<br />
core group was initially selected<br />
based on recommendation from<br />
managers from different areas in<br />
the hospitals, clinical and nonclinical.<br />
That doesn’t mean that<br />
these are the only members for<br />
G2 group. We believe that there<br />
are a lot of hidden talents in<br />
this organization and we would<br />
like to invite them to join. If<br />
you are interested in joining<br />
