In this issue, you will find a full-page article regarding 

the appreciation letter from the Custodian of the Two 

Holy Mosques King Fahad Bin Abdulaziz praising our 

Annual Report. He encourages management and staff 

to continue to work together to provide excellent health 

services to the community. 

Another exciting accomplishment for KFSH&RC- 

Jeddah is passing the Joint Commission International 

Accreditation (JCIA). We were informed that the 

Hospital passed its 2 nd accreditation survey and expect 

to receive the certificate by October. Full coverage 

of the accreditation survey will be published in an 

upcoming issue of Sea Script based on information 

provided by the Planning & Utilization office. 

Achievements and programs such as these should be 

shared with the staff and the community. Without 

your input we would not have this type of information 

to publish in the newspapers or in this newsletter. 

Your achievement is everyone’s success and it is 

KFSH&RC-Jeddah’s accomplishment, too. Please 

take time to share your accomplishments with us, be 

they personal or as a result of a team effort, so others 

can be made aware of our accomplishments through 

this newsletter and media articles. 

Don’t forget! Notify us of you or your Department’s 

achievements so we can share it and arrange for photos 

to recognize the occasion. We are all here to serve

Although I was confident we would do well in the recent JCIA 

survey, it is still encouraging to have the unbiased opinion of the 

surveyors to confirm the excellence of our operations. I offer 

my congratulations as well as a sincere “Thank You” to each and 

every one of you. 

I understand and appreciate the enormous preparation that was 

put forth to ensure the Hospital was ready for the actual survey 

but stress we must not lose sight of the fact that each and every 

system in the hospital has been established with the ultimate 

goal of providing excellent patient care. Therefore, it is of the 

utmost necessity keep our focus on maintaining and upgrading 

our systems and policies & procedures on a continual basis to 

ensure our patients are served to the best of our ability and that 

they are aware our focus is to maintain the standard that has been 

existence at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research

WALKING AFTER MANY YEARS OF DISABILITY 

Three Wheelchair-bound Children Walk after Treatment at KFSH&RC- Jeddah 

The Pediatric Neurology 

service at KFSH&RC- 

Jeddah has been quite 

busy with large volume of 

referrals and consultations, 

particularly for difficult 

and complicated patients. 

The division has been 

quite productive in terms 

of scientific activities and 

international publications. 

Dr. Mohammed M.S. Jan who is an 

Associate Professor & Consultant of 

Pediatric Neurology, and Director 

of the Pediatric Neurology training 

program announced the successful 

treatment of three wheelchair bound 

children who became ambulatory 

after many years of disability. They 

were seen by many physicians 

in different hospitals and had 

many treatments with no benefit. 

They all responded dramatically 

to treatment with L-dopa at 

KFSH&RC-Jeddah. 

The first child was an 11-yearold 

girl referred with progressive 

lower limb spasticity diagnosed 

as hereditary spastic paraplegia. 

She became wheelchair bound 

over the prior 3 years. Ten days 

after L-dopa treatment, she was 

able to walk unassisted. The

disorder. They had 

generalized progressive 

motor and speech 

deterioration, diffuse

wheelchair bound over the prior 4 

and 6 years, respectively. The 3 rd girl 

developed bilateral foot deformities 

that necessitated corrective orthopedic 

surgery in another institution. Both 

girls were able to ambulate with 

assistance within 2-3 weeks of Ldopa 

treatment. All 3 children were

AMERICAN CONSULATE 

A letter of appreciation was addressed to Dr. Tariq Linjawi, CEO to commend 

Mr. Nidal Salameh, Corporate Nursing Coordinator, Corporate Patient Services- 

Business Affairs for the significant support he extended to the American 

Consulate Staff in Jeddah following the recent terrorist attack. Mr. Salameh 

assisted in sorting out insurance related issues, which were impending the care 

of locally employed staff at the Consulate. Mr. Salameh’s pleasant and polite 

manner were specially mentioned. To quote from the letter, “He is a credit to 

the hospital...”

were all able to walk independently. 

All 3 children were misdiagnosed 

initially and were wheel chair bound. 

They had a rare disorder called 

dopa-responsive dystonia (Segawa 

disease), which was described in 

1976. The motor disability usually 

begins at 1-12 years of age, most 

often with progressive dystonia in the 

feet and gait alterations. It should be 

considered in any child who presents 

with dystonia of unknown etiology 

because it responds so dramatically 

to L-dopa. All our cases were 

referred for further evaluation of their 

diagnoses and management, and all 

had initial misdiagnoses. Our findings 

were presented internationally at the 

8 th Congress of the European 

Federation of Neurological 

Societies in Paris (Eur J Neurol 

2004;11(2):254) and nationally 

at the 10 th Pan Arab Union of 

Neurological Science meeting 

in Jeddah. The findings were 

then published internationally in 

the American Journal (Pediatric 

Neurology). For detailed

Blood Donation During the Saudi 

Healthcare & Hospital Exhibition

Saudi Healthcare & 

Hospital Exhibition held 

at the Jeddah International 

& Exhibition Center more 

than 600 citizens and 

expatriates donated blood 

at the KFSH&RC mobile 

blood bank. Dr. Yaser 

Al-Ghamdi, Director of 

Health Affairs, Makkah 

Area, inaugurated the 

unit, praising it and the 

blood donation service it 

provides for patients. 

According to Dr. Nabila 

Al Baz, Acting Chairman, 

Pathology & Laboratory 

Medicine, KFSH&RC- 

Jeddah, this mobile blood donation 

clinic is designed for blood collection 

from different areas, and represents 

the Hospital’s first participation in 

the exhibition. This clinic, Dr. Al-Baz 

added, is a mobile medical laboratory 

containing complete medical 

On April 28, 2005 sixteen executives from 

King Faisal Specialist Hospital and 

Research Centre-Jeddah attended a training 

workshop sponsored by McKinsey and 

Company in Kitzbuhel, Austria. McKinsey 

and Company converted the old and rundown 

“Grand Hotel” in this small Austrian alpine 

skiing village into its international training 

center where it trains new McKinsey 

consultants as well as a few honored clients. 

Although the weather was wonderful, the 

scenery beautiful and the mountains beckoned; 

there was little time for the group to enjoy the 

location since the workshop began at 8:00 

o’clock in the morning and ran until 7:30 in the 

evening, daily. The workshop was facilitated by 

McKinsey consultants, expert in their fields, and 

covered the tools and techniques the McKinsey 

consultants employ to help their clients achieve 

results. Topics covered included: 

·• problem solving, 

·• teamwork, 

·• operations and facilitating 


equipment and is provided with a team 

of phlebotomists who take blood from 

donors and send it to the Hospital’s 

main medical laboratory. This 

process supplies all blood groups to 

the hospital blood bank and provides 

patients with the blood they need. It 

is worth mentioning that this clinic is 

the first of its kind in the 

Makkah Area. 

Dr. Al Baz noted 

an enhanced awareness 

regarding the importance 

of donating blood in 

order to save the lives of 

patients. Pre-donation 

laboratory infectious 

disease screenings, sugar 

and blood pressure tests, 

blood grouping, weight 

measuring and other 

investigations are carried 

out free of charge in order 

to ascertain the donor’s 

health before a blood 

donation card is issued. 

The CEO of the 

Hospital, Dr. Tariq Linjawi, extended 

his thanks to Dr. Al-Ghamdi for 

visiting the mobile blood donation unit, 

and to all blood donors who took part 

in this campaign. He also extended his 

thanks to Al-Harithy Company and to 

all organizers of the event. 

KFSH&RC-Jeddah Executives’ Workshop

workflow, and

The attendees were very complimentary 

concerning the content of the workshop and 

what they were able to learn. But, many 

of the attendees voiced the opinion that 

the feeling of teamwork they were able to 

develop at the workshop was one of the most 

desirable outcomes. Even though most of those 

whoattended had worked with one another for 

several years, there was a consensus that they 

had learned much more about each other that 

will make working together easier and more 

productive in the future. Besides making 

progress on the strategic initiatives, which 

was the chief reason for the workshop, one 

of the main tasks of the attendees is now to 

disseminate the knowledge to others in the 

organization. The workshop is a great example 

of how the strategic partnership with McKinsey 

and Company will have positive effects on the 

operation of the hospital well into the future.

Our News 

KFSH&RC-Jeddah Ratifies an 

Agreement with Ernst & Young

KFSH&RC-Jeddah recently formalized 

an agreement with Ernst & Young, an 

internationally recognized accounting and 

auditing company. The agreement was signed by 

Dr. Tariq Linjawi, Chief Executive Officer and 

by Dr. Abdullah Baeshen, representative of Ernst 

& Young’s partner company in Jeddah. 

According to this agreement, the company 

will perform an inclusive audit of all rules and 

regulations currently existing in the Hospital’s 

various financial and administrative departments. 

It will also design and implement a new internal 

auditing program, with the cooperation of the 

appropriate hospital departments. 

A previous consultation services agreement 

has also been ratified with the same company 

for a major restructuring of computer systems 

in order to improve the functions of Finance and 

Logistics. Once this is completed, the next step 

will be to have all hospital computers linked 

to one unified system, which will ensure more 

efficiency and higher accuracy for the overall 

internal audit. 

Dr. Tariq Linjawi indicated hospital 

management will continue to look for ways to 

improve financial and administrative systems, 

which, in turn, will provide improved internal 

auditing results. Appropriate departmental staff 

will be asked to contribute to the decisionmaking 

processes on an on-going basis.

Visited KFSH&RC-Jeddah 

On May 11, 2005, Dr. Hussein Al Furayah, Director, Saudi Council, visited the King Faisal 

Specialist Hospital & Research Center-Jeddah. Dr. Tariq Linjawi, Chief Executive Officer; Dr. 

Abdullah Al-Amoudi and Dr. Omar Al Amari, Director and Deputy Director, respectively, of 

Academic and Training Affairs welcomed and met him. 

Dr. Al Furayah visited several areas such as the Dental Clinic, Outpatients, Cardiology, Radiology, 

Emergency Services, Cath Lab and ICU. He also met with program directors and Saudi diploma 

students.

Infection Control Corner 

Do No Harm

Our News 

We always stress to 

our hospital staff 

that they should keep 

trying to protect their 

patients from acquired 

infections that health 

care workers could 

unintentionally give to Dr. Samar Badreddine 

patients. 

That is not the only 

important goal of the Infection Control 

Service. As important to us is to protect 

“you”, our hospital staff, from infections 

that you could get from patients, or that 

you could give to each other. 

You may wonder how can you give 

your colleague an infection? One way is 

by throwing needles and sharps in regular 

wastebaskets, instead of discarding them 

in “sharp” dispensers. By doing that, 

your colleagues could inadvertently get 

pricked by that needle, which could be 

contaminated with blood from patients 

who are HBV, HCV or HIV positive. For 

that purpose, “sharp” disposal boxes are 

placed in every single patient room of our 

facility. This issue has been problematic 

especially over the last month, when we 

had increasing reports of staff getting 

needle pricks because the needles 

were misplaced. In one instance, HBV 

transmission was a concern. Our staff’s 

attention to this issue is essential in order 

to make our work environment safer. 

Remember that the “Do No Harm” 

in the Hippocratic oath that most of us 

took upon graduation, not only refers to 

patients, but also to colleagues. 


Jeddah Dental Esthetic 

Conference 2005

The Department of Dentistry at King Faisal 

Specialist Hospital & Research Center-Jeddah 

recently organized the Jeddah Dental Esthetic 

Conference, which was held at the InterContinental 

Hotel under the patronage of HRH Prince 

Abdulmajeed Bin Abdulaziz, Prince of Makkah Al 

Mokarrama. The conference was opened on behalf 

of His Highness by Dr. Yasser Al Ghamdi, Director 

of Heathcare, Western Region, on Monday, 16 Rabi 

Al Awal, 1426. 

The conference focused on the importance of 

esthetic dentistry as one of the fastest growing 

dental professions. The days of “drill and fill” are 

changing into the age of beautiful smiles. Ten 

speakers emphasized the philosophy of beauty in 

dentistry and the latest advances in the world of 

implants, cosmetic dentistry, photography, and the 

best methods for teeth treatment. Lectures were 

given on such topics as ‘Implants in the Esthetic 

Zone’, ‘The Art of Smile Creation’, ‘Extreme 

Makeover: A dream comes true’, and many other 

scientific and interesting topics. 

The conference was associated with two main 

exhibitions: a photography exhibition where the 

most famous photographers of Jeddah showed 

images of both old and new Jeddah, and an exhibition 

for brand name dental supply companies. 

The conference was very successful and well 

received by a wide range of attendees who came 

from various places in the Kingdom and the Gulf 

Area.

The Department of Pediatrics, 

in collaboration with Academic 

Affairs, organized the Third 

International Pediatric Update 

(Pediatric Update 2005) during 

the period from 18-20 th April, 

2005. 

Dr. Abdullah Al Ghamdi, 

Chairman of the Organizing 

Committee, said that more 

than 50 papers were presented 

during this 3-day symposium 

covering most aspects of 

pediatric medicine and surgery. 

The meeting was accredited by 

the Saudi Council for Health 

Specialities for 15 CME hours 

and also included 6 workshops. 

The attendance was 

extraordinary, which indicates 

the success of all the scientific 

KFSH&RC-Jeddah activities. 

Polycystic Ovary 

Syndrome 

Mona Nasrallah M.D

Endocrinology and Metabolism 

American University of Beirut 

Polycystic ovary syndrome is a condition that affects 

about one in every ten women of childbearing 

age. The disease is a result of hormonal imbalance 

and centers around one main abnormality - the lack 

of regular ovulation. For the diagnosis, two of the 

following are required: irregular menstrual cycles; 

hyperandrogenism (meaning high male hormone levels 

with symptoms such as acne and hirsutism), and/or 

cysts on ovarian ultrasound. The disease must to be 

differentiated from other conditions, which may have 

similar symptoms. Consequences of the above are 

infertility, high miscarriage rate, and risk of endometrial 

cancer. 

About half of the women with polycystic ovary 

syndrome have a condition of ‘insulin resistance’. 

Having high insulin levels has been associated with a 

certain metabolic phenotype, such as fat accumulation 

around the waste line, high blood pressure, and 

abnormal lipid profile. This condition is referred to as 

‘metabolic syndrome’ and puts the patient at increased 

risk to develop diabetes mellitus and heart disease. 

Therefore, polycystic ovarian syndrome is a relatively 

common condition with wide and far-reaching illeffects 

on health. Its treatment is long-term and may 

need to target both the reproductive and the metabolic 

abnormalities. 

Dr. Mona Nasrallah is a Consultant Endocrinologist 

at the American University of Beirut. She was among 

many other distinguished national and international 

speakers at the 3rd Annual International Women’s Health 

Update Symposium, organized by the Department of 

Medicine, King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research 

Center – Jeddah. Polycystic ovaries was just one of 

the many important topics covered during this medical 

symposium at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, which took 

place between March 29-30, 2005.

more than 2000 open heart surgeries 

are carried out by kfsh&rc-jeddah 

Increased Rate of Heart Disease Warning for Saudi Arabia

More than 2000 open-heart 

surgeries have been 

carried out by KFSH&RC- 

Jeddah since it first opened four 

years ago. Dr. Ahmad Jamjoom, 

Consultant Cardiologist said 

that 60% of these surgeries 

pertain to patients with pediatric 

cardiac congenital defects and 

40% to adult cardiac patients. 

Adult surgeries include 

coronary artery implantation 

and repair/replacement of 

cardiac valves. 

The Hospital has successfully 

carried out lung implantation 

surgery and is fully prepared 

to perform heart transplantation 

surgery as well. The Hospital 

utilizes an artificial temporary 

heart to rehabilitate pediatric 

patients after complex 

surgeries. 

Dr. Jamjoom pointed out that 

the success rate of open-heart 

surgeries is high, approximately 

97%. This success demands 

a collaborative team effort 

from cardiologists, including 

four pediatric cardiologists, 

anesthesiologists, intensivists, 

operating room personnel, and 

highly competent nursing and 

technical staff. KFSH&RC- 

Jeddah is a unique center in 

the western region possessing 

complete resources enabling 

it to treat cardiac congenital 

deformities in the western 

region. 


Although the 

exact rate of heart 

disease is still 

undetermined, Dr. 

Jamjoom warned 

of an increasing 

rate if we take into 

account the increase 

in the number of 

cigarette smokers 

and individuals 

suffering from 

obesity, hypertension problems, 

as well as the lack of exercise. 

These are all considered 

constituent risk factors of 

heart disease. According to Dr. 

Jamjoom’s speculation, 7-8% 

of the kingdom’s population 

is afflicted with heart disease, 

secondary to one of the abovementioned 

risk factors; of

these 30-40% are 

hypertensive and 

12-15% are diabetic. 

Dr. Jamjoom added 

that, of the hospital’s 

adult cardiac patients, 

50% are diabetic and 

50-60 % have raised 

cholesterol levels. 

These are secondary 

factors related to 

their life style, 

poor nutrition, obesity, use of 

hydrogenated oils and poor 

awareness of the risks of high 

cholesterol levels. 

Dr. Jamjoom pointed out that 

the hospital’s Cardiovascular 

Disease department holds 

two campaigns each year at 

one of Jeddah’s commercial 

centers. The purpose of these

campaigns, known as “For a 

Healthy Heart”, is to enhance 

public awareness of heart 

disease. A team of medical staff, 

sports medicine specialists and 

physiotherapists contribute to 

these campaigns by providing 

the public with guidelines for 

protection from heart disease, 

testing cholesterol levels and 

measuring blood pressure for 

individuals and predicting the 

likelihood of heart disease 

occurring in the next ten years. 

Dr. Jamjoom recommends 

reducing the use of nonsaturated 

oils, such as olive/ 

cornflower oils, and avoiding 

saturated oils such as animal 

and hydrogenated oils that 

are considered risk factors. 

Reheating/reusing oils, 

including non-hydrogenated 

oils, is also considered a 

harmful practice. 

In the course of his 

comments regarding the 

cardiology outpatient clinics 

of the KFSH&RC-Jeddah, 

Dr. Jamjoom noted that our 

cardiologists treat patients 

according to their own subspecialty. 

Each staff membar 

received their training at 

recognized international 

medical institutions and has 

significant experience in 

research work. 

He indicated that our cardiac 

patients are managed according 

to accepted standards and best 

practice principles, which would 

be evident to any professional 

of this medical discipline. 

This is complimented by the 

availability of sophisticated 

medical equipment which can 

be compared to that available 

in many western countries 

including the U.S. The clinic 

runs morning and evening

also undertakes field and 

clinical research projects such

failure by changing the anticellular

A Little Big Miracle

The date of January 20, 2005, turned out to be a very special 

day filled with joy for a family in Jeddah because their baby 

girl was born. 

Though small, she proved herself to be strong. She was delivered 

prematurely in King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Center- 

Jeddah at 23 weeks + 5 days of gestational age, weighed only 565 

grams and had a length of 31.5 cm. Now she is proud to weigh 2.57 

kg at the age of 151 days and measures 48cm. 

According to research done and evidence based practice, the 

survival rate for premature babies in this gestational age group 

is 20-30%. Furthermore, the percentage of babies followed up in 

this gestational age group in later developmental stages with no 

complications is 10%. This baby is really a little big miracle. 

She was diligently taken care of by various healthcare 

professionals with international qualifications and experience. The 

attending Consultant Neonatologist, Dr. Ali Mersal and the rest 

of the nursing and medical staff are fully supporting the baby and 

family and look forward to follow the baby’s progress.

Success Story 

One day, a poor boy who was selling goods from door 

to door to pay his way through school, found he had only 

one thin dime left, and he was hungry. 

He decided he would ask for a meal at the next house. 

However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman 

opened the door. Instead of a meal he asked for a drink 

of water. She thought he looked hungry so brought him 

a large glass of milk. He drank it slowly, and then asked, 

how much do I owe you?” 

You don’t owe me anything,” she replied. “Mother has 

taught us never to accept pay for a kindness.” 

He said..... “Then I thank you from my heart.” 

As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger 

physically, but his faith in God and man was strong also. 

He had been ready to give up and quit. 

Many year’s later that same young woman became 

critically ill. The local doctors were baffled. They finally 

sent her to the big city, where they called in specialists to 

study her rare disease. 

Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. 

When he heard the name of the town she came from, a 

strange light filled his eyes. 


Immediately he rose and went down the hall of the 

hospital to her room. Dressed in his doctor’s gown he 

went in to see her. He recognized her at once. 

He went back to the consultation room determined 

to do his best to save her life. From that day he gave 

special attention to her case. 

After a long struggle, the battle was won. Dr. Kelly 

requested the business office to pass the final bill 

to him for approval. He looked at it, then wrote 

something on the edge and the bill was sent to her 

room. She feared to open it, for she was sure it would 

take the rest of her life to pay for it all. Finally she 

looked, and something caught her attention on the 

side of the bill. She read these words..... 

“Paid in full with one glass of milk”

Tears of joy flooded her eyes as her happy 

heart prayed: “Thank You, God, that Your love has 

spread broad through human hearts and hands.” 

There’s a saying, which goes something like this: 

Bread cast on the waters comes back to you. The

you love at the least expected time. If you never see 

the deed again at least you have made the world a 

better place - And, after all, isn’t that what life is all

When you are applying for an exit/re-entry visa 

make sure your iqama is valid. If it isn’t, then 

apply for iqama renewal so you can have a worry 

free vacation time. 

If you are renewing your iqama so you can obtain 

an exit/ re-entry visa, don’t pay for the visa 

beforehand as this will delay renewal process! 

When applying for any transaction at Government 

Relations (iqama, exit/re-entry, or another 

country’s visa) submit photos with a white 

background, as this is the requirement of all 

government agencies and foreign consulates. 

Another requirement of government agencies and 

foreign consulates is that Saudi passports must be 

signed by their holder and must be valid for at 

least SIX months; otherwise you won’t be allowed

The G2 Group sponsored 

a “STRESS REDUCTION 

DAY” held on the 22 nd June. The 

original idea for the day came 

from Dr.Linjawi, our CEO. He 

sensed that hospital employees 

were going through a stressful 

time especially with preparations 

for the JCIA survey, My Care 

implementation and much more 

that everyone needed some 

stress relief. So a week before 

the Stress Reduction Day was 

held, the G2 group met and 

discussed the idea. The first 

thing that came to my mind is 

“like what only a week ahead 

plus our other responsibilities. 

NO WAAAAAY!” Then we 

started the hard work; planning, 

communication, typing, printing 

…so much more and honestly 

we were really afraid that we

…but we did it and it was great. 

The smiles on the faces of our 

colleagues, even if it was for 

few hours, made all the work

was the funniest activity of 

them all. We saw another face 

on all people who joined in the 

fun and games; doctors, nurses 

and administrators…. a happy 

face. 

I bet many of you are asking 

yourself “what is the G2 Group?” 

Well let me tell you the whole 

story. First of all G2 means 

generation 2, or simply the new 

generation who will take the lead 

of this organization in the future. 

The idea of G2 started when 

Dr.Bahabri and Dr.Linjawi were 

discussing ways in which they 

could share tools and techniques 

they had learned from a recent 

workshop sponsored by the 

McKinsey and Company with 

the rest of the hospital staff. 

As they spoke, the idea of 

identifying a group of bright, 

young hospital employees who 

represented the future of the 

hospital occurred to them. They 

thought that when the group of 

young people was identified, the 

current leaders could give them 

support, advice, education and 

an opportunity to show what 

they were capable of. The G2 

core group was initially selected 

based on recommendation from 

managers from different areas in 

the hospitals, clinical and nonclinical. 

That doesn’t mean that 

these are the only members for 

G2 group. We believe that there 

are a lot of hidden talents in 

this organization and we would 

like to invite them to join. If 

you are interested in joining
