Former NFL Stars Join Fight Against<br />

Cancer in <strong>Lee</strong> County<br />

Retired Miami Dolphins great Jim “Crash” Jensen and his<br />

wife, Darlene, joined the <strong>Lee</strong> <strong>Memorial</strong> <strong>Health</strong> <strong>System</strong><br />

Foundation in the fight against cancer at the 2nd Annual<br />

“Cheers to a Cure.”<br />

A special meet-and-greet evening during the event<br />

featured former NFL players from the Miami Dolphins,<br />

Pittsburgh Steelers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Kansas City<br />

Chiefs, Green Bay Packers and San Francisco 49ers. The<br />

generous donations during the night benefited <strong>Lee</strong> Cancer<br />

<strong>Care</strong>.<br />

More than 200 donors, players and guests enjoyed a<br />

selection of cocktails and hors d’oeuvres at Dwyers<br />

restaurant while mingling with the retired football players,<br />

as well as the Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders and former<br />

NFL stars Lamar Thomas, Troy Drayton, Reggie Givens<br />

and Bill Riehl.<br />

The Minnesota Twins Perfected their<br />

Swings with Two Annual Benefit<br />

Tournaments<br />

Past and present players for the Minnesota Twins had two<br />

definite birdies in 2006 and 2007 to raise funds for adult<br />

cancer treatment at <strong>Lee</strong> Cancer <strong>Care</strong>.<br />

They helped raise more than $60,400 in 2006 and more<br />

than $80,000 in 2007.<br />

Minnesota Twins’ stars Joe Nathan, Johan Santana, Joe<br />

Mauer, Torii Hunter, J.D. Durbin and Justin Morneau,<br />

and former pitching star Mike Trombley, sharpened their<br />

skills on the course while chatting with fans and posing<br />

for pictures. After a fun day on the course, the golfers were<br />

ready for the celebratory dinner and auction.<br />

The funds raised during the events will go toward the<br />

development of the new 62,000-square-foot, freestanding<br />

cancer center being constructed at the intersection<br />

of Interstate 75 and Colonial Boulevard. The new<br />

facility will provide residents of Southwest Florida with<br />

comprehensive and quality cancer care right here at home.<br />

New Mercedes Dealership Rolls into Town,<br />

Benefits <strong>Lee</strong> Cancer <strong>Care</strong><br />

More than 800 people turned out in March 2007 to check<br />

out some of the most beautiful cars in the world and enjoy<br />

cocktails and hors d’oeuvres at the brand new Mercedes-<br />

Benz of Fort Myers.<br />

<strong>Lee</strong> Cancer <strong>Care</strong>, which provides services to adults with<br />

cancer, was the beneficiary of the event, receiving more<br />

than $17,000.<br />

Local businesses also donated prizes during the event.<br />

Mercedes-Benz of Fort Myers generously donated<br />

the biggest prize of the evening, a two-year lease on a<br />

Mercedes-Benz SLK valued at $20,000.<br />

Works by “Art by the disABLEd” from <strong>Lee</strong> <strong>Memorial</strong><br />

<strong>Health</strong> <strong>System</strong>’s Arts in <strong>Health</strong>care Program were<br />

auctioned off as well, contributing to the successful night.<br />

Saks Fifth Avenue’s “Key to the Cure”<br />

During the annual “Key to the Cure” celebration, all Saks<br />

Fifth Avenue stores nationwide and Saks.com united to<br />

donate two percent of all sales to worthy causes, including<br />

<strong>Lee</strong> Cancer <strong>Care</strong>. The event takes place each year at the<br />

Saks Fifth Avenue located in The Bell Tower Shops in Fort<br />

Myers.<br />

The kick-off ceremony included hors d’oeuvres and<br />

entertainment and the chance to win some great prizes,<br />

including fragrances, clothing, accessories and shoes from<br />

some of the world’s most exclusive brands.<br />

Local heroes who have made a difference in the lives<br />

of women with cancer were also honored with special<br />

Humanitarian Awards.<br />

The 2006 recipients of The Humanitarian Award are<br />

Lawrence Antonucci, M.D.;<br />

John Tsakalakis, M.D.; and<br />

Joe Zivic.<br />

The 2007 recipients are<br />

Valerie Dyke, M.D.;<br />

Tina Gegeckas, RPh, BCOP; and<br />

Donna Giannuzzi, RN, MBA, CNAA, BC.
