Chaired by the Director of Undergraduate Studies
(DUGS) this committee is responsible for all
aspects of undergraduate teaching including
overseeing programme specifications, regulations,
timetabling, assessment and examinations,
coursework, student welfare and responding to
external factors such as College policy, external
examiners reports, SOLE (Student On Line
Evaluation) responses and course accreditation.
The Chair also represents the Department on the
Faculty’s Engineering Studies Board and Teaching
Committee.

The staff student committee is a forum in which
students may raise points of concern and make
suggestions regarding the undergraduate
course. It meets twice a term in the Autumn and
Spring terms and once in the Summer term.
The committee is normally chaired by a student
representative and is composed of academic staff
from the teaching committee, undergraduate
year representatives, the student departmental
representative on the union committee and the
union representative for academic affairs. The
teaching administrator acts as the secretary. The
Director of Undergraduate Studies prepares the
agenda. There are two year representatives from
the first and second year, four representatives
from the third year and two from the fourth year.

This committee meets four times a year to discuss
issues relevant to postgraduate and postdoctoral
researchers including safety, space and facilities.
It also highlights concerns raised by the ROLE
(Researchers On Line Evaluation) responses,
organises the Department’s Postgraduate
Research Day and encourages social events.

The aim of the Research Committee is to
improve the quality and volume of research
performed within the Department and to facilitate
multidisciplinary interactions. This is achieved by:
• evolving the departmental research strategy,
linked to the Departmental Business Plan
and the Faculty Research Strategy, identifying
new equipment needs, including funding and
space and identifying future opportunities,
and how to grow these internally and through
interaction at Faculty, College, National and
International levels
• enabling the best research profile by: raising
the esteem of each academic nationally and
internationally through a range of activities
including assisting with nominations
for fellowships of learned societies,
recommendations for award of prizes, and
nominations for invited and keynote lectures;
overseeing Department Research Assessment
submissions
• ensuring academics are aware of funding
opportunities and facilitating collaborative bids
where appropriate
• interfacing with the Faculty Research
Committee
• advising on research areas/profiles of
members and arranging an annual meeting of
the External Advisory Panel
• formulating the seminar programme
• producing an annual Research in Progress
booklet
The committee meets four to six times a year.
