Dr Liz Elvidge, Dr David McPhail, Dr Solveig Felton and Dr Natalie Stingelin 1 Postdoctoral research staff Typically, there are about 50 postdoctoral research associates and assistants and 10 postdoctoral research fellows engaged in investigations extending over the broad fields of materials science and materials engineering. The Department of Materials assists in the development of our postdoctoral researchers by encouraging them to take on a number of responsibilities related to both research and teaching, including: writing papers, giving presentations, reviewing publications, mentoring younger researchers, and assisting with teaching undergraduates. Additionally, postdoctoral staff may undertake some form of teaching or student supervision. The Postdoc Development Centre at Imperial is also committed to supporting our postdocs by providing a range of courses and development events, a series of publications and one-to-one coaching. Postdoctoral Research Staff Committee This committee is a forum to discuss issues relevant to PDRA researchers in the Department including safety, space, facilities and career development. The table summarises the information for the past three years: Session Postdoctoral research associates and assistants 2009–10 64 11 2008–09 56 11 2007–08 49 11 Postdoctoral research fellows Postdoctoral Researcher Symposium The first Postdoctoral Researcher Symposium took place in the Department on 25 June 2010. This annual event takes the form of a one-day scientific meeting with a programme of oral presentations interspersed with poster sessions. The aims of the day were: • to give the postdocs and other members of the Department an overview of the wide range of research being carried out in the Department • to allow the postdocs an opportunity to present their research and practise the important skills of oral and poster presentation • to give the postdocs the chance to meet each other in an informal setting and exchange experiences At the end of the day a cheese and wine reception was held where awards were presented to Richard Hamilton, Dr Solveig Felton and Dr Amy Cruickshank for Best Oral Presentation, Best Poster Presentation and Best Poster Presentation (runner up) respectively. 54 Department of Materials Annual Report 2009–10 www.imperial.ac.uk/materials www.imperial.ac.uk/materials Department of Materials Annual Report 2009–10 55
