Minsung Ko was awarded one
of four Armourers’ and Brasiers’
Company Prizes. These prizes are
awarded to the undergraduate
students who have completed
the best third year design study.
Alex Leung was awarded the
David West Prize. This prize
is awarded to a final year
undergraduate student for
excellence in the application of
phase diagrams to the solution
of materials problems in design
study or research work in the
Department of Materials.
Shurin Lin was awarded one
of two Rolls Royce/Armourers’
and Brasiers’ Company First
Year Undergraduate Awards.
These prizes are awarded to the
top two performing first year
undergraduate students.
Melchior Lorin was awarded
the Thomas Young Centre
Mathematics Prize. This prize
is awarded to the second year
undergraduate student achieving
the highest overall mark in the
Mathematics and Computing
Course (MSE.201).
Nasrin Lotfibakhshaiesh received
an award from the European
Science Foundation to cover costs
associated with her attendance
at the ESF-UB Conference on
Nanomedicine. In addition, Nasrin
received funds from The Royal
Academy of Engineering valued
at £300 to fund her attendance
at TERMIS-EU meeting 2010
in Galway, Ireland. At that
conference, Nasrin’s abstract
entitled Bioactive glass coatings
and bone tissue engineering
was selected for a Best Abstracts
Award. The Armourers and
Brasiers Company also supported
Nasin’s attendance at the ICOMBT
conference with a travel grant
valued at £750.
Stuart Lowe had a proposal
accepted to use the facilities at
the Molecular Foundry, Lawrence
Berkeley National Laboratory,
Berkeley, USA. In order to support
his visit, and attendance at the
Bio Nanotech conference (also
in California), Stuart secured
funding worth £2,000 from the
Royal Academy of Engineering
and the Armourers’ and Brasiers’
Gauntlet Trust. The research
at the Molecular Foundry was
carried out between June and
August.
Yanwei Lum was awarded one

Oliver Mahony was awarded an
EPSRC PhD Plus Award, which
covers his post-doctoral salary
for 12 months to increase the
impact of his novel PhD research
in silica/gelatin hybrid scaffolds
for tissue engineering.
Park Maneepairoj was awarded
one of four Armourers’ and
Brasiers’ Company Prizes.
These prizes are awarded to the
undergraduate students who
have completed the best third
year design study.
Eva McGuire was awarded
the Don Pashley Memorial
Prize and Medal. This prize is
awarded to the postgraduate
student for the Best Scientific
Content of a Lecture given at
the Department of Materials
Postgraduate Research Day.
Second place went to Sheng
Yue. In addition, Eva was
granted an IFSM (International
Federation of Societies for
Microscopy) Scholarship
to attend the International
Microscopy Congress 17 (IMC17)
in Rio de Janeiro in September
2010. The scholarship included
complimentary registration, hotel
accommodation, complimentary
access to the welcome reception
and congress banquet and a
stipend of US$1,000 as well as an
Advanced Microscopy School.
Sunny Phuah came first place in
the London stage of the Young
Persons’ Lecture Competition
on 25 February 2010 for his
presentation entitled Corrosion of
spent advance gas reactor (AGR)
fuel cladding in trace electrolyte
environments.
Fatemeh Pishbin was awarded
a Trust of the Journal of the
European Ceramic Society
Grant valued at €500 as well
as an Armourers and Brasiers’
Travel Grant to attend the
4th International Conference
on Shaping of Advanced
Ceramics held in Madrid on
16–18 November 2009. At the
conference, Fatemeh won the
second prize in the Student
Contest for her poster/short oral
presentation entitled Progress
in the electrophoretic deposition
(EPD) of bioactive glass and
bioactive glass-biopolymer
composite coatings. In addition
to this, her paper was selected
for publication in a special issue
related to the Conference to be
published in the J. European
Ceramic Society.
Gowsihan Poologasundarampillai was awarded
the Matthey Prize. This prize is awarded to the best
PhD graduate who is an Associate of the Royal
School of Mines.
Chedtha Puncreobutr was awarded a Materials
Overseas Research Scholarship (M-ORS).
These scholarships are awarded to overseas
postgraduate students who have demonstrated
academic excellence and financial need.
Christopher Reece was awarded the Bessemer
Medal. This prize is awarded to a final year
undergraduate student for the Associateship of the
Royal School of Mines for excellence in Metallurgy
and Materials.
An article, published in The Times (Letters) on
20 October 2010 entitled English, possibly;
Buckingham, no, refers to a microscopy done in
2007 by Rafael Sa and Morgan Wesley on the
supposed ‘Buckingham’ porcelain vases. This
work revealed that porcelain was manufactured
in England much earlier than had previously been
thought.
Thibault Salomon was awarded the Materials
Student Centenary Prize. This prize is awarded
to the forth year undergraduate student who
is adjudged to have completed the best MEng
placement project.
Ieuan Seymour was awarded the Morgan
Advanced Ceramics Undergraduate Prize. This
prize is awarded to the best overall second year
undergraduate student in the Department of
Materials.
The review article Electrophoretic deposition
of carbon nanotube – ceramic nanocomposites
written by Professor Aldo R Boccaccini (Visiting
Professor) with Johann Cho, Tayyab Subhani, C
Kaya and F Kaya as co-authors, was voted as the
fourth ‘Hottest’ article in J. European Ceramic
Society during the period July to September 2009.
Pinyuan Tian was awarded a Materials Overseas
Research Scholarship (M-ORS). These scholarships
are awarded to overseas postgraduate students
who have demonstrated academic excellence and
financial need.
Christos Tsitsios was awarded one of two Ronald
Jock McGregor Prizes. These prizes are awarded to
the undergraduate students who produce the best
second year case study.
Esther Valliant received a Canadian Centennial
Scholarship for the 2010–11 academic year.
Arjoon Vohra was awarded one of two Ronald Jock
McGregor Prizes. These prizes are awarded to the
undergraduate students who produce the best
second year case study.
Clementine Walker was awarded the Peter Pratt
Memorial Prize. This prize is awarded to the
undergraduate student from the Department of
Materials who produces the best final year project.
Junsheng Wang was awarded the Constance
Fligg Tipper Centenary Memorial Prize. This prize
is awarded to PhD graduate showing the most
industry and independence in research with
outstanding contributions to Materials Science
and Engineering.
Jing Yang was awarded the Governors’ BEng
Prize in Materials. This prize is awarded to an
outstanding student in the final undergraduate
year of the BEng course.
Sadegh Yazdi was awarded first prize for Industrial
Relevance at the Postgraduate Research Day,
17 March 2008. Second place went to Sobhan
Abolghasemi.
An image of three-dimensionally ordered porous
silver from an article entitled Controlling the
electrodeposition of mesoporous metals for
nanoplasmonics by Rong Zhu was selected for the
December front cover of the new RSC nanoscience
journal Nanoscale.
