Year Five Sleepover The annual Year Five sleepover took place again last year, however, after a week of impending rain, the clouds finally opened a few hours prior to the campout. Not to dampen the spirits of the students and teachers, the decision was made to sleep in the classrooms and go ahead with the night of activities and fun. Students participated with great enthusiasm and creativity designing their flags and performing their war cry. After a dinner of burgers, the students commenced their evening activity - “Finding your Way”. Warm damper cooked over the open fire for breakfast rounded off the sleepover before the students and tired parents packed up and headed for home. 08 Year Seven Canberra Trip Our Year Seven students recently undertook an educational tour of the National Capital, participating in a variety of educational programmes which focussed on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The four days, from October 10, were extremely rewarding and enjoyable for students who were given a first-hand experience at democracy in action as the visit coincided with the Carbon Tax Legislation vote. Students were intrigued and challenged over the four days by the various activities, including the audio and visual displays and numerous names on the Roll of Honour Board at the Australian War Memorial. The tomb of the ‘Unknown Soldier’ and the closing ceremony when silence fell over the War Memorial as a single piper played a tribute to the fallen, will be memories that the Year Sevens will never forget. We would like to thank the Australian Government for their support of this programme and in assisting us to meet the cost of this excursion. Under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER) programme the Australian Government contributed towards the travel expenses incurred.
Operation Christmas Child Thank you to Mrs Kathy McKinnon for once again organising Operation Christmas Child. The donations sent in by our Primary Campus families were delivered to the Yeronga warehouse by staff who volunteered their time to help pack the many shoe boxes that are shipped to underprivileged children over the Christmas season. Our sincere thanks goes out to all parents who supported this valuable cause. Days of Excellence On September 12 and 13 Mrs Williams, Miss Massey and nine of the Primary Campus Extension Group students attended the Days of Excellence Programme at Moggill State School. The programme offered students the opportunity to examine microbes, viruses and bacteria exploring the micro-organisms behaviour, size, appearance, as well as their deadly habits. The students also discussed some of the most important discoveries in the history of medicine, the vaccines and antibiotics and the body’s defence immune system. 09
