University of Chichester Music Academy
(UCMA) Jazz
UCMA Jazz is an exciting new approach to engaging young musicians
with jazz. We develop skills in jazz ensemble playing, performing with
confidence, practice strategies, independent learning, understanding
historical context and theoretical and practical development. The course
will develop transferable skills to all aspects of jazz and improvisation as
well as developing general performance skills. The fundamental
principles of jazz are taught in an enjoyable, informative and accessible
way. It is open to anyone from school year 7 (aged 11) – year 13 (18
years). Intermediate instrumental ability is required as well as an interest
in jazz and openness to improvisation. It is preferable that students have
prior musical experience to approximate grade 5 standard (although this
is not compulsory if the student can demonstrate an interest in jazz and
improvisation).
Format
Each UCMA Jazz session runs on a Saturday 10-2pm alongside
our established UCMA programme in the Music Department at
the University of Chichester. A typical session will consist of
four classes developing four key curriculum points:
• Class One: Ensembles
• Class Two: Jazz history / listening skills and / or theory
• Class Three: Practical Musicianship
• Class Four: Performance Preparation
