Welcome
Did you know… You can now use a ‘Tchi’ in payment for seeing a concert
The TCHI is a local currency scheme designed to aid community volunteering and skills
exchange. It provides an alternative currency for people in the Chichester district. TCHI
notes are a paper currency with a nominal value of one hour.
The University of Chichester Music Department became the first independent partner of
the TCHI in January 2012, extending the use of the TCHI beyond private membership into
the public domain.
The Music Department will accept TCHIs for entry to many of its concerts and
productions from September 2012 onwards. Where TCHIs can be used to access events,
they will be marked ‘Tchi accepted’ in this booklet. You will be required to reserve your
seat online and ‘pay in’ your Tchi on the door, on the day of the concert.
The Music Department will be offering students and Transition Chichester members
regular opportunities to earn TCHIs by volunteering as part of the production set build
and costume teams. Opportunities will be advertised through the Music Department and
Transition Chichester network. To whet your appetite, here are some of the kinds of
tasks often required:
What’s on
University of Chichester Music Academy
(UCMA) Jazz
UCMA Jazz is an exciting new approach to engaging young musicians
with jazz. We develop skills in jazz ensemble playing, performing with
confidence, practice strategies, independent learning, understanding
historical context and theoretical and practical development. The course
will develop transferable skills to all aspects of jazz and improvisation as
well as developing general performance skills. The fundamental
principles of jazz are taught in an enjoyable, informative and accessible
way. It is open to anyone from school year 7 (aged 11) – year 13 (18
years). Intermediate instrumental ability is required as well as an interest
in jazz and openness to improvisation. It is preferable that students have
prior musical experience to approximate grade 5 standard (although this
is not compulsory if the student can demonstrate an interest in jazz and
improvisation).
Format
Each UCMA Jazz session runs on a Saturday 10-2pm alongside
our established UCMA programme in the Music Department at
the University of Chichester. A typical session will consist of
four classes developing four key curriculum points:
• Class One: Ensembles
• Class Two: Jazz history / listening skills and / or theory
• Class Three: Practical Musicianship
• Class Four: Performance Preparation
Price:
• Five sessions cost £47 (payable in advance)
University of Chichester is delighted to be a partner in creating one of the county’s
London 2012 Cultural Olympiad Festival events, Whispering Woods. Beginning at twilight
and ending in darkness, the audience is invited to wander through a specially lit woodland
landscape within the magnificent Bignor Park to hear the sound of a hundred and fifty
voices from choirs across West Sussex, and encounter some surprises along the way!
It is inspired by Laulupidu, the largest amateur choral event in the world, which takes place
in a forest amphitheatre in Estonia. The sixty minute programme includes three
commissions: award-winning young composer, Lynne Plowman’s, White Stars, Green
Leaves; iconic Bulgarian composer, Kyril Todorov’s, Goro Le Goro and special
arrangements by leading folk singer Anna Tabbush of Steve Knightly’s Oak and Peter
Bellamy’s setting of Rudyard Kipling’s Tree Song: Oak, Ash and Thorn. Music Director,
Dessi Stefanova, is a BBC Open Choir of the Year winner, and is leading a talented team
of choral leaders including University of Chichester practitioners, recent graduates and
current students.
Whispering Woods is part of the West Sussex Ahead of the Game Festival, a series of
five amazing, outdoor productions, produced by Paul Ackerley on behalf of the West
Sussex Arts Partnership led by West Sussex County Council. The Festival is the county’s
approach to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, created with the
communities of West Sussex.
The performance involves walking (approx 1/2 mile) and standing. Wear practical clothing and
footwear for our inclement weather and rough terrain – the show will go on, come rain or shine!
The success of Trial by Jury launched the famous series of 13 collaborative works between Gilbert
and Sullivan that came to be known as the Savoy Operas. As with most of their operas, the plot
appears ludicrous to the audience, but the characters behave as if the events were perfectly
reasonable. This narrative technique blunts the pointed barbs aimed at the hypocrisy and base
motives of those in authority. The setting is a courtroom with a Defendant in court for ‘breach of
promise of marriage’. Unfortunately the judge and jury are biased in favour of the beautiful
Plaintiff. A number of ludicrous suggestions are made, before the Judge solves things himself so
that he can leave in time for lunch. Critics and audiences praised how well Sullivan's witty and
good-humoured music complemented Gilbert's satire.

Ballade opus 30, Variations opus 35 and Sinfonia opus 42
by the great French organist Marcel Dupré (1886 – 1971)
Dupré was a pupil of Widor and teacher of Messiaen – an enviable pedigree. His compositional
style is dramatic and sometimes improvisational, with a striking mix of modal, tonal and polytonal
sounds. The combination of organ and piano is unusual and gives a very exciting range and depth
of colour (and is quite hard to coordinate in most ecclesiastical buildings!).
commemorates the sacrifices made by Royal Marines and their families in modern conflict. Based
around the war in Afghanistan, it is a five movement work that is interspersed by integral news
headlines. This is only the third occasion Eternal Voices has been performed. The world première
Arguably the greatest English folk song performer, writer, collector and editor of them all'
Q Magazine (2004)
For more than 40 years Martin Carthy has been one of folk music's greatest innovators, one of its
best loved, most enthusiastic and, at times, most quietly controversial of figures. His skill, stage
presence and natural charm have won him many admirers, not only from within the folk scene, but
also far beyond it. Martin has also been an integral collaborator and vocalist as part of Simon
Emmerson’s project, ‘The Imagined Village’ which won a 2008 BBC Radio 2 Folk Award for best
Following in the song and dance-steps of Sweet Charity and On The Town, the first semester, secondyear
Musical Theatre production is once again set to be a riot of laughter and energy with a stunning
production of the original 1937 version of Rodgers and Hart’s Babes in Arms.
Rodgers and Hart's Babes In Arms boasts one of the greatest scores ever written, including such
standards as My Funny Valentine, Where Or When, The Lady Is A Tramp and I Wish I Were In Love Again.’
It was the hit of the season when it opened in 1937, running to nearly 300 performances, but
essentially vanished thereafter. The 1939 Mickey (Rooney) and Judy (Garland) movie retained only
the title and two songs from the Broadway original. In the late 1950's Rodgers commissioned a
sanitised, de-politicised rewrite eliminating iconic choreographer George Balanchine’s original ballet
scenes, deleting one of the sub-plots and two of the songs, adding new roles, changing the order of
the songs and assigning some to different characters. It became the standard version of Babes in Arms
that was produced for forty years until the original John Guare '37 version of the show was dusted
off and produced by University of Cincinnati in 1998. The ecstatic reviews and subsequent New
York production convinced the Rodgers estate that they had a forgotten gem on their hands.
We are presenting the original 1937 Babes In Arms, set during the Great Depression. It is about a
group of teenagers who attempt to stage a show to demonstrate their performing talent when their
parents become unemployed, in an effort to avoid being sent to a work farm. Apart from the great
songs, its enduring fascination is perfectly expressed by Tom Briggs, Director of R&H Theatre
Library: (Its) ‘more raucous virtues, that typify musical comedies of the 30's, are peppered with
socio-political satire that continues to resonate. For instance, in an on-going and hilarious riff on
socialism, one of the boys is all for "sharing the wealth" when he's broke, denouncing the notion as
soon as he has a couple bucks, and ultimately returns to his Bolshevik convictions when his fortunes
fade once more.’
On the 1998 revival of the 1937 version the Cincinnati Enquirer enthused, ‘The numbers sizzle, what
more can you ask?’ while Playbill-On-Line said, ‘we are making the original version of Babes In Arms
available for production for the first time. It's possible that another show this fresh and youthful may
come along some day, but who knows where or when?’
‘dazzlingly good chamber ensemble...exuberantly expressive, intimate style...gorgeously idiomatic playing’
The Times
An intimate contemporary musical by American composer, Jason Robert
Brown that is about that one moment when you hit a brick wall and have
to make a choice, or take a stand, or turn around and go back. The show
is a compelling exploration of life’s emotions: risk, fear, hope, dreams, love
and those life-defining moments when you have to make those important
decisions, stand your ground, break your silence, make a bargain, or find
your way home. And we see the survivors: those that can regroup and
figure out how to carry on amid a new set of circumstances, sometimes
against seemingly overwhelming odds. Told through a series of songs,
showing us the individual stories, all the narratives are set in the present, in which the definitions of
family, distance, money, technology and the very nature of human contact is changing every day and
in which today’s answers probably won’t apply tomorrow. Propelling this turbulent journey, is a
brilliant live band.
This new saucy interpretation of the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta is a brand new look at this
to have one-to-one instrumental lessons at the
University during the week from one of the
team of specialist teachers. However, in most
cases the UCMA aims to work in partnership
we appreciate that many students will already be
