Dr. William Gerhardt, a Twin Towers resident, has been named the
Jefferson Award winner by Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical
Center (CCHMC) for the month of June, 2010. The Jefferson Awards,
established in 1972 by Co-Founders Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis,
U.S. Senator Robert Taft, Jr. and Sam Beard recognizes individuals
for acts of outstanding public service and serving as a ‘Call to Action
for Volunteers’ in local communities.
Dr. Gerhardt served the community as a pediatrician for 30 years and
worked closely with CCHMC. After retiring, he began collecting
artifacts from CCHMC’s rich history which are now displayed in a
former library at the hospital. “Dr. Gerhardt has made an extraordinary
contribution to preserving the proud history of Cincinnati Children’s
— and everything he has done for so many years has been done on
his own time, as a volunteer,” notes an award nomination support
letter.
Dr. Gerhardt also created a historic photo display ‘Hall of Honors’
and writes alumni updates for the staff newsletter because he
remains in communication with CCHMC alumni all over the world.
“Since Cincinnati Children’s does not have a formal alumni
association, Dr. Gerhardt’s contributions serve as a major tool for
keeping former residents and fellows connected to the institution
and to each other,” a nomination support letter states. “I find it
remarkable that Dr. Gerhardt has dedicated himself to preserving the
heritage of Cincinnati Children’s practically single-handed without
compensation for his efforts. His work is clearly a labor of love and
respect for the institution and of his fellow physicians and
caregivers.”
The awards are presented on both the national
and local level. National recipients include
Peyton Manning, Greg Mortenson, Eunice
Shriver, Rudy Giuliani, and Bill Gates. Locally,
a resident of Twin Lakes, Dr. Bea Lampkin,
received the Jefferson Award in January 2009
Golf Classic
The day was brisk but that did not deter the 125
golfers who came out to enjoy the 12th Annual Life
Enriching Communities Foundation Golf Classic on
April 26th. Hosted at the beautiful Maketewah
Country Club, the event raised over $50,000 for
capital projects for Twin Lakes and Twin Towers.
“The success of the Golf Classic each year is
attributed to many amazing people,” says Molly
Talbot, Vice President of the LEC Foundation.
“The support from associates, residents, volunteers,
and strategic business partners is overwhelming.
They create a wonderful event and are entirely
responsible for its success,” she adds. This is
the third year the Golf Classic has been held at
Maketewah Country Club and the clubs hospitality
has been outstanding. “They treat us as if we
are guests in their own home,” Molly says, “you
could not ask for a more conscientious host.”

Over 1100 seniors in southwestern Ohio
submitted manuscripts, poems, paintings,
and other works of art for the annual art
competition sponsored by The Association of
Ohio Philanthropic Homes, Housing and
Services for the Aging (AOPHA). Twin Towers
hosted this regional event for the second
consecutive year.
“The art work that is submitted is truly
amazing,” says Holly Henderson, Manager of
Events and Programs at Twin Towers. “We
have had winners in the categories of
cooperative art, woodworking, photography,
large quilted works, woven arts, woodworking,
computer art and writing both fiction and
prose,” she adds.
Regional award winners compete in AOPHA’s
Statewide Competition at their Annual
Conference and Trade Show in Columbus in
the fall.

Innovative Program for Older Adults Receives National Award
Life Enriching Communities received the 2010 Best Practices in Health Promotion and Wellness and Aging
award for innovative programs and services offered to older adults through The Connection at Twin Towers
and The Connection at Twin Lakes. This award, given by the Health Promotion Institute of the National
Council on Aging (HPI/NCOA), was presented to Life Enriching Communities at the 2010 Annual Conference
of National Council on Aging and the American Society on Aging in Chicago, IL on March 16th. The Health
Promotion Institute’s Best Practice Award recognizes a program, initiative, or service that enhances the health
and wellness of older adults.
Life Enriching Communities Partners with
TriHealth for Associate Wellness
Life Enriching Communities has long been recognized as a leader among senior living communities for
incorporating the principles of wellness into adult lifestyles. Using this expertise, we have begun an Associate
Wellness Initiative to be more purposeful and intentional about the whole-person wellness of our Associates.
“We are working with TriHealth to offer a Health Assessment to all Associates,” says Monica Smith. “This is
an opportunity for Associates to improve their whole-person wellness using the six dimensional approach at
the core of our Way of Wellness philosophy; emotional, intellectual, physical, social, spiritual, and vocational,”
explains Monica.
The Health Assessment includes the completion of a questionnaire and a personal evaluation with a TriHealth
Wellness Specialist. The evaluation consists of a blood pressure screening, a body composition analysis, a
lipid profile, a glucose reading and full review of the results. Participants will then work with Personal Associates
at the Connection at either Twin Lakes or Twin Towers to create a personalized plan for their own wellness
journey.
In addition to the opportunities through
TriHealth, LEC offers Associates a Whole-
Person Wellness Questionnaire to assess the
needs and interests for new wellness
programming to be offered at Twin Lakes and
Twin Towers. “Through this questionnaire we
will be able to develop new programs directly
in line with what Associates want,” Monica
says. “This initiative is very exciting because
it will allow us to provide Associates with
valuable information to begin or continue their
journey of Whole-Person-Wellness.”

The Connection, located on the campuses of Twin Towers and Twin Lakes Senior Living Communities, focuses
on the implementation of programs and services that keep older adults healthy in mind, body and spirit throughout
their lifetime. Offering individualized programming, a variety of aquatic classes, the finest strength training
equipment and the knowledge of professional Associates, The Connection provides a variety of opportunities for
balancing the six dimensions of wellness: emotional, intellectual, physical, social, spiritual and vocational.
“Winning this award is very prestigious,” says Monica Smith, Executive Director, Twin Lakes, “our vision is to
be a world-class leader in senior living. This award indicates we are leading the country in our approach to
senior living.”
New Business Advances
Whole Person Wellness
During the past decade, LEC has become a recognized leader of whole-person wellness in the senior living
industry. Our reputation and expertise affords us the opportunity to create a new business venture, Whole
Person Wellness Solutions, Inc. (WPWS) to provide solutions to the senior living and senior services industries in
the form of whole person wellness.
“This is a great opportunity to further advance whole person wellness
across the landscape of senior living,” says Scott McQuinn, LEC President
and CEO. “Older adults, now and in the future, expect a lifestyle with
meaning and purpose.” In addition to consulting services, WPWS will
offer leadership training, professional education programs, product
development and research opportunities for the advancement of wholeperson
wellness.
Jan Montague, a national expert in the whole-person wellness movement, has joined the LEC team to assist with
the design, development and implementation of WPWS, Inc. “It seems as if everyone I have met at Life Enriching
Communities is interested in the advancement of whole-person wellness for all the right reasons,” says Ms.
Montague. It’s an outstanding opportunity to work closely with a group of people motivated to develop optimum
whole-person wellness.”

Joining Jan is Monica Smith, executive Director of Twin Lakes who
began her career with LEC as the Director of Wellness for Twin Towers
and Twin Lakes nearly ten years ago. She has played a huge part in
creating a culture of whole-person wellness for LEC.
She has worked with Jan Montague for several years in a variety of
different ways. Ms. Smith states, “The philosophy of whole-person
wellness touches me personally. I am thrilled to have this opportunity,”
Ms. Smith continues, “I am excited and looking forward to working
with Jan in the development of Whole-Person Wellness Solutions
Inc.”
The response to this new business has been extraordinary. The first

Godoy Films Documentary at Twin Towers
Award-winning filmmaker Melissa Godoy has blended her passion for storytelling with her interest in older
adulthood to create a documentary entitled Advent. This documentary, filmed at Twin Towers, is a personal
and eloquent story that follows the lives of several residents throughout the holiday season. The documentary
listens to their Christmas hopes, dreams and daily lives as they move towards a new year. “It really is fun to
see Bessie, who is 102,” says Ruth Keeton who was also filmed for the documentary, “Bessie’s beautiful
smile and attitude encourage all of us.”

The filming took several months and captured residents
in poignant family experiences, joyous holiday events,
and private, solitary moments. Personal thoughts and
comments on aging, family, loss of a spouse, and
moving to a senior living community were all reflected
upon with the approach of the New Year. “Melissa
was able to capture the essence of the community
and thoughts of the residents as the holiday season
unfolded,” says
Molly Talbot, Vice President of the Life Enriching
Communities Foundation.
Godoy is an artist-in-residence with the Ohio Arts
Council. She has worked on several documentaries
and award-winning television programs including Do
Not Go Gently, a documentary about creative aging
narrated by Walter Cronkite. Melissa praised the
courage and openness of the participants in the
making of Advent. “It is a mature film, with a story that
I never could have dreamed up before meeting Estella,
Bessie, Vivian, Gaylord, Marion, Bill and the others in
the community. They were the perfect collaborators.
We stepped into the unknown together and found
something new.”
This project was made possible by the General Electric
Community Fund and the Ohio Arts Council Arts
Learning Program.
New Home Services
Available for Residents
Life Enriching Home Services is the newest
service to be offered to residents at both Twin
Towers and Twin Lakes. “Research indicates
that the healthiest living situation for older
adults is where they are able to function at the
highest level of independence, and that is what
we want for every resident of Life Enriching
Communities (LEC),” says Julie Uhrig, Director
of Home Services.
Ms. Uhrig stresses that Life Enriching Home
Services does not strictly focus on providing
personal care. “The LEC Way of Wellness, the
cornerstone of our communities, is also the
cornerstone of home services,” she explains.
“We focus on whole person wellness: how they
are functioning based on the six dimensions
of wellness: physical, spiritual, vocational,
intellectual, emotional and social.”
Life Enriching Home Services has been a
welcome addition for Barb, whose recently
widowed mother lives in an apartment at Twin
Towers. “Rhonda, who visits my mother, is
darling. She is effervescent and my mother’s
face lights up when she sees her,” Barb says.
With Rhonda making regular visits for personal
care and companionship, Barb has seen a
positive change in her mother. “Life Enriching
Home Services has allowed mom to remain
independent because she doesn’t feel she has
to call on my brother and I all of the time,”
Barbs says, “she is in control of her life and we
know she is being cared for. It is very comforting
for all of us.”

Strategic Plan Off To A Great Start
The enthusiasm generated by the teams of residents, associates and board members in the planning
phase of the strategic plan carried over into the implementation phase in 2009.
• The continuous improvement efforts focused
on the voice of the customer by conducting 14
focus groups with key stakeholders at both
Twin Towers and Twin Lakes. Focus groups
included residents, associates, volunteers,
business partners and the general community.
The groups were an important first step in
identifying the positive and negative perceptions
of Life Enriching Communities (LEC). The team
is focusing their 2010 efforts on improving
processes and services to exceed the
expectations of our residents and other
customers.
• The LEC University, offering on-site education
and training programs for the leadership team,
held 12 classes designed to improve the skills of
directors, managers and supervisors. The LEC
University program was so successful it is being
expanded to all associates.
• Associates at both Twin Towers and Twin Lakes
participated in surveys to assess their level of
engagement in whole person wellness to establish
a baseline for further implementation of our Way
of Wellness.
• The LEC Leadership team participated in a selfevaluation
of LEC utilizing the principles of the
nationally acclaimed Malcolm Baldrige Quality
Award to determine our baseline understanding
of quality and performance excellence. These
results will form the basis of an improvement plan
to be implemented in 2010.
• Several projects/opportunities for growth were
identified, two of which took form in 2009: The
initial planning/design of the Health Services
Building at Twin Towers and the development of
Life Enriching Home Services. Both projects
expand our potential to better serve our changing
customers.

needed to achieve our goal.”
Credit Rating “Affirmed” By Standard & Poor’s
In an economic climate where the credit ratings of many senior living communities across the country have
been downgraded, Standard & Poor’s affirmed its ‘BBB’ long-term rating and underlying rating (SPUR) on
Life Enriching Communities (LEC), Ohio’s series 2006A-2006C revenue bonds, issued by Hamilton County
Hospital Commission and Hamilton County. The ‘stable’ outlook was maintained as well.
Life Enriching Communities, doing business as Twin Towers and Twin Lakes, is the only Senior Living
organization based in Hamilton County to have its credit rating affirmed in 2009.

New Health Services
Building Planned for
Twin Towers
Planning and design began in 2009 for a new Health
Services Building on the Twin Towers campus. The fourstory
building will be the new home for Memory Support
Assisted Living, Short Term Rehabilitation and Long Term
Nursing Services.
“The current Health Pavilion, which was completed in 1962,
has served residents well but the structure is not conducive
to modern service practices such as Whole Person
Wellness,” says René Sharp, Twin Towers’ Executive
Director. The new building will incorporate the household
model in its design which is more comfortable for residents
and more efficient for providing services.
The $20 million project is being managed by Greenbrier
Development located in Dallas, Texas. Greenbrier was
selected for their expertise in re-positioning established
senior living communities across the country. The
architectural design of the building is being done by SFCS,
Inc. based in Charlotte, N.C. and the interiors are being
designed by Faulkner Design Group from Dallas, Texas.
Construction is anticipated to begin in 2011 with the
building completed in 2012. We will launch a capital
campaign to help support this very important improvement
to the campus.
National Exposure for
LEC Wellness Philosophy
Life Enriching Communities’ continues to be
recognized as leaders in integrating the
philosophy of whole person wellness into
operational structures of senior living
communities.
In March 2009, Monica Smith, Twin Lakes’
Executive Director and Jan Montague,
nationally known wellness consultant, were
among other notables in a panel presentation
titled “Best Practices in Senior Living: Wholeperson
Wellness” at the National Council on
Aging/American Society on Aging Annual
Conference held in Las Vegas, Nevada
In December 2009, Christel Cousino, Director
of Life Opportunities and Jim D’Wolf , Director
of Dining Services presented “Integrating
Dining into Your Wellness Experience” to
attendees of the International Council on
Active Aging Annual Conference in Orlando,
Florida.

Summer Concert Series Returns to Twin Lakes
Bring your lawn chair, family and friends and join us for the second annual Outdoor Summer Concert Series at
Twin Lakes. BackTrack returns for the second year and performs favorites from the 1950’s through the
1990’s. Their motto is ‘to perform to satisfy the guests’ and that
is exactly what they do! Thursday, August 19th from 7:00pm to
9:00pm.
Squeeze Play, will perform traditional big band music but
when they strap on their accordions be prepared to polka! Known
as Cincinnati’s ‘Big Accordion Band’ this lively band is invited to
play at Zinzinnati Oktoberfest each year. Thursday, September
9th from 7:00pm to 8:30pm.
