Affirms Credit Rating for 2010 

I 

n an economic climate where senior living communities across 

the country have been challenged by declining occupancy levels 

due to the declining real estate prices and the related reluctance of seniors 

to sell their homes, Standard & Poor’s affirmed its ‘BBB’ long-term rating 

and underlying rating (SPUR) on Life Enriching Communities (LEC), Ohio’s 

series 2006A-2006C revenue bonds, issued by Hamilton County Hospital 

Commission and Hamilton County. The ‘stable’ outlook was maintained 

as well. Life Enriching Communities is the only Senior Living organization 

based in Hamilton County to have its credit rating affirmed in 2010.

Auxiliary — 

A History of 

Success 

O ver the past eighty-nine 

years the Auxiliary at Twin 

Towers has focused on supporting 

and improving the quality of life 

for all residents and this year 

will be no exception. They have 

another great year lined up with 

the planning for their picnic, 

luau and tea already underway. 

The 136 members not only plan 

events for the residents but they 

also use funds from fundraising 

and the proceeds from managing 

the ‘Gifts-n-More’ Store, to 

purchase many items for the 

residents. This year the group 

will also focus on expanding 

membership and support from 

the community.

Friends of 

Twin Lakes

n 2007 a group of 

residents gathered to 

discuss assisting with the financial 

support of both the Benevolent 

Care and Pastoral Care programs. 

They believed they could raise 

money for what they felt were two 

indispensible programs at Twin 

Lakes and have fun in the process. 

Four years later the group has over 

180 members, has a steady stream 

of revenue from the Campus Shop 

they manage, host an enormously 

successful annual garage sale, and 

have a great time doing all of it!

and American 

Heritage 

Girls Charter 

Relationship

Lakes has chartered 

American Heritage Girls, 

Troop 25 of Montgomery. American 

Heritage Girls is a character 

building program for girls ages 5 

to 18 whose mission it is to ‘build 

women of integrity through service 

to God, Family, Community and 

Country.’ “We use a chartering 

system to create a partnership 

between two not-for-profits who 

have similar missions,” explains 

Carolyn Moore, Vice Coordinator 

for the troop. The charter affiliation 

is not simply to provide a meeting 

space, it allows both organizations 

in the charter to assist in 

providing wholesome leadership 

and character development 

opportunities for the girls. 

In sponsoring several events and 

programs for the residents at Twin 

Lakes, Carolyn and other troop 

leaders discovered the missions 

of both groups were in alignment. 

“We realized Twin Lakes was a 

great place that would provide 

great opportunities for the girls. The 

girls would learn so much from the 

residents and even enjoy the great 

art of conversation. It also gave the 

troop an opportunity to give back 

and serve those in our community.” 

“This partnership offers both of us a 

wonderful opportunity for valuable 

intergenerational 

experiences,” says Melissa Reiff, 

Twin Lakes Wellness Specialist 

and Charter Representative for the 

troop. Carolyn agrees. “Instilling 

patriotism is an important part of 

American Heritage Girls philosophy 

and the residents at Twin Lakes 

can share their military experience 

as well as their personal stories 

as Americans. This partnership is 

very unique; the girls will have the 

opportunity to meet very talented 

and experienced individuals.” 

Carolyn is also on the staff of 

the American Heritage Girls 

organization whose headquarters 

are in Cincinnati. “This is the 

first of the 300 troops across 

the country to be chartered 

by a senior living community. 

We will use this learning 

opportunity as a proto-type 

and hope to establish more 

relationships like it in the 

future.”

Young Volunteers 

Make Big Impact 

L 

ife Enriching Communities has been blessed 

for over 100 years with many wonderful 

volunteers. “There is currently a national surge in 

volunteerism,” says Molly Talbot, Vice President of the 

LEC Foundation and Volunteer Services, “and although 

we have enjoyed steady volunteer support throughout 

our history, what we are seeing now is a younger group 

of volunteers on our campuses.” These young people are 

students from grade school through college, and they 

are showing up and asking how they can help. “They 

are amazing,” says Molly, “their energy and enthusiasm 

is contagious and they really want to be part of our 

communities!” Photos on right show just a few of the 

groups that support our communities.

year the Ohio 

Department of Aging 

sponsors Joined Hearts in 

Giving, an award which honors 

long-married Ohioans who 

share not only a commitment 

to each other, but also to their 

communities through volunteer 

service. Eligible couples must be 

age 60 or older and married at least 40 years. Winning 

couples are honored by the Ohio Department of 

Aging and the First Lady of Ohio at a reception held in 

observance of National Volunteer Month in February. 

Reverend John Dunham and his wife Mary Helen of 

Twin Towers were nominated for their devoted service 

prior to and while residing at Twin Towers. “We can 

always rely on Mary Helen and John and even if we 

need them in a pinch, they gladly serve with a smile,” 

says Thomas Reusch, Manager of Volunteer Services 

who nominated the couple. 

The Dunham’s first volunteered at Twin Towers in the 

early 1980’s but really got involved when Rev. John 

accepted the position of Development Director in 1984. 

His task was a campaign to raise three million dollars 

for the community. As the Director of Development, 

John introduced many new fundraising ideas to Twin 

Towers: the Tempo Publication (now called Legacy) 

which communicated the good works of the Foundation 

as well as requested donations; the Angel Appeal which 

honors/memorializes a loved one while supporting the 

Benevolent Care Fund; Grove of Life which originated 

as a memorial to all whose gifts made possible a new 

wing of the Health Pavilion in 1989, but is now an 

exciting way to honor or memorialize a loved one. 

“John’s ideas were sound and they all continue today,” 

says Thomas. 

The Dunham’s have worked together on many projects 

for Twin Towers and continue to volunteer with the 

Auxiliary, Pastoral Care Committee, and Chapel services 

for the Health Pavilion residents. Mary Helen is the

Over their last thirty years of service to Twin Towers, 

both Mary Helen and John have touched many lives 

and continue to touch hearts today through the 

local community, their neighbors, friends and fellow 

residents. “Much of the success that Twin Towers 

currently experiences, has been because of the vision, 

dedication, and belief in the community that Mary 

Helen and John have,” adds Thomas.

Capital Campaign 

Construction of “New” 

Health Pavilion to 

Begin this Spring 

P lans 

for the new Health 

Pavilion, Park Expansion 

and other renovations on the 

Twin Towers campus are being 

finalized with an anticipated 

groundbreaking in May, 2011. The 

four-story building will be the new 

home for Memory Support Assisted 

Living, Short Term Rehabilitation 

and Long Term Nursing Services. 

Construction is expected to be 

completed in late 2012. 

The new building 

is designed to 

complement 

the “household 

model,” which is 

more comfortable 

for residents and 

more efficient in 

providing services. 

“Households” are 

small intimate areas 

that resemble ones 

own home instead of 

a traditional nursing 

home. Life in the household 

model occurs naturally without 

schedules. Households contain all 

the comforts of home including 

a full kitchen in which residents 

can help prepare meals and grab a 

snack from the fridge, living rooms 

for casual conversations, dining 

rooms and private bedrooms. 

The staff functions as personal 

assistants and are able to perform 

all the duties within the home, such 

as housekeeping, administering 

medications, cooking and assisting 

with events and programs. 

The current structure, completed in 

1962, will be demolished to make 

way for the Park Expansion that will 

include walking trails, beautiful 

garden spaces and a patio with an 

outdoor kitchen. The pergola, water 

fountains and other features are 

being incorporated into the new 

design. 

The project is being managed by 

Greenbrier Development located 

in Dallas, Texas. Principal members 

of the project team include the 

architectural firm of SFCS, Inc 

based in Charlotte, N.C and interior 

design firm, Faulkner Design Group 

from Dallas, Texas. 

Twin Lakes 

Auditorium 

P lans for the Twin Lakes 

auditorium continue to 

move forward. The auditorium 

would expand the existing 

Montgomery Room to seat 250 

people, include lighting, audio/ 

video capabilities, storage and 

flexible seating to allow for 

multiple uses. “With the number 

of residents at Twin Lakes, we hold 

three separate resident meetings 

to accommodate everyone,” says 

John Perry, a resident who has been 

actively involved in the project, 

“we miss having the opportunity for 

an all campus discussion.”

again the Pottery Studio 

at Twin Lakes is a hive of 

activity with the creation of a third 

mosaic through a Community- 

Based Art project. “This tile mosaic 

will display the change of seasons,” 

explains Jan Brown-Checco, the 

Cincinnati artist who designed 

and is directing the project. Jan 

led the previous projects at Twin 

Lakes and is known both nationally 

and abroad for her incredible 

community art pieces. 

Community-Based Art refers to 

a large piece of art created by 

the collective efforts of a group. 

From conception to creation the 

group is involved in every step. 

“This projects theme is the change 

of seasons of the local natural 

environment,” says Jan. “As you 

view it from left to right you will 

see the seasons changing, winter 

to spring to summer to autumn and 

winter again, expressing the gentle 

passage of time.” 

Many of the people who worked on 

the previous mosaics have returned 

to participate in this project. 

They laugh and call themselves 

the ‘semi-professionals.’ “What 

is amazing about this process is 

watching individual tiles progress 

and become this beautiful

creation,” says Lois Johannigman, 

who is a resident and accomplished 

artist herself. Yet not everyone that 

comes to glaze or design is an 

artist. Fred Moore, a resident, has 

been involved with the previous 

mosaics and has tackled sculpting 

some of the most difficult pieces. 

“I have enjoyed these projects so 

much. I was trained as a Textile 

Engineer,” says Fred, “and now I am 

a tile maker.” 

Working on a project 

together fosters 

camaraderie as 

well as creativity. 

“The beauty of 

the project is 

that everyone’s 

collective energy 

and intention are 

here in this one 

mosaic,” says Jan, “that 

is what makes it so powerful. 

The mosaic is being created from 

a variety of tiles, some are hand 

crafted and glazed on site, some 

were created by other community 

based projects and some are 

commercial tiles with their original 

or altered color. “This blending of 

various tiles will create a surface 

with details that will be interesting 

to investigate up close, presenting a 

more subtle design from a distance.” 

If you are interested in helping 

or just curious to see the project, 

the group meets each Thursday 

in the Pottery Studio from 10:00 

am – 12:00 noon. Installation of 

the project in the Peace Garden is 

expected in late spring.

m Flower & Garden Show at Twin Lakes 

Twin Lakes will be hosting a Flower and Garden 

Show to showcase the gardens of the North Campus! 

Pick up some gardening tips and purchase a few 

plants to take back to your own garden! The show 

will be held on Saturday, May 21st from 10:00 

am to 5:00 pm and Sunday, May 22nd from 12:00
