Seniors at Twin Towers
Adopt Local Battalion
I t
always helps to have the
support of others to get us
through difficult times. For active
duty soldiers, it is encouraging to
know that they have a friend, a
community that will lift them up.
The Seniors for Soldiers program
at Twin Towers strives to do just
that.
Seniors for Soldiers is an
adoption program linking senior
groups with soldiers from local
National Guard or Reserve units.
Twin Towers Health Pavilion
residents recently adopted the
216th Engineer Battalion in
nearby Woodlawn. Many of the
soldiers have served in Iraq or
Afghanistan.
Residents gather every 4-6
weeks to make gift bags for the
soldiers and remember them in
their thoughts and prayers. In turn,
residents are treated to visits from the
battalion, including personal visits
with our vets. If an event occurs that
requires our Battalion’s service, they
will leave knowing they are cared for
by a loving community.
Seniors for Soldiers is guided by Twin
Towers Wellness Specialist’s Mimi
Bartone and Cece Russell-Jayne. Ms.
Russell-Jayne created the program
with LTC Greg Gustafan.
“There is a unique connection
between our vets and the young
soldiers. It is a program of heroes:
the soldiers and the residents, family
members,
and associates who support them.”
said Russell-Jayne. According LTC
Gustafan, “Nothing lifts a soldier’s
morale like support from the
community.”
While the ratio of soldiers to
residents is 600 battalion members
to 100 residents, the residents
of Twin Towers are determined
and enthusiastic about providing
encouragement for their soldiers.
At the end of the day, when the
community embraces them, it makes
a difference in the life of a Battalion.
Apparently our resident’s efforts
made a significant impact. On April
Gaylord Gross and members
of the 216th Battalion of the
National Guard.
28th the program was selected as
one of The Adjutant General’ s (TAG),
Award recipients at the 2012 Family
Readiness Group State Conference.
The program has also attracted
professional recognition as the 2011
First Place Best Practices recipient
by the National Certification Council
for Activity Professionals. “It’s a very
exciting thing to be doing at Twin
Towers,” Russell-Jayne said.
Wednesdays
With “The
Movie Man”
A dam
Puccini loves to give back.
Every Wednesday night, Twin
Lakes’ residents can relax and enjoy a
movie, courtesy of him.
Puccini, a volunteer who lives nearby and
walks every Wednesday to Twin Lakes, is a
greeter at the McKinley Place Welcome desk.
The movie night was an idea he came up with on his own.
Puccini brings movies in for residents in skilled nursing
to watch. So far they have enjoyed ABC news presents,
“The Century: America’s Time,” hosted by Peter Jennings.
The 15-part series of documentaries begins in the 1900s
and covers decades of the 20th century, each highlighting
events of special interest.
“I thought the residents might enjoy watching these and
taking a walk down memory lane,” explains Puccini. “They
did enjoy them and movie night turned out to be a big
success. It’s nice to know we have discovered something
North Campus of Twin
Lakes, surrounded by
lush woods, and the home of many
animals, is now officially recognized
as a Certified Wildlife Habitat by the
National Wildlife Federation.
Twin Lakes resident Martha Seaman,
a member of the National Wildlife
Federation for nearly 50 years,
nominated the North Campus last
year, and in July, received word of
the official certification.
In order to become certified,
the habitat must provide for its
wildlife food sources, water sources,
cover, and places to raise young.
When he is not at the Welcome desk or showing movies
to residents, Puccini plays Scrabble with residents once a
week, and transports one of the Shepherd Court residents
to chapel on Sunday evening. “I look forward to this
and particularly enjoy the time with resident, Sue Geer,”
Puccini said. “She is a special lady to me and very nice, as
are all of the residents.”
Five
Generations of
Volunteering
B essie Wessel of Twin
Towers is the matriarch
of five generations of volunteering.
Wessel, 104, recently became the
great-great-great grandmother to a
little girl named Parker Marie.
Wessel’s son-in-law, Herb Reller, is also
a resident and outstanding volunteer to
the Twin Towers community. He serves
on the annual recognition luncheon
committee each year, and volunteers in
other areas as well.
Each Christmas, Wessel, in addition to
her entire family, gathers to assemble
and string the lights on the Christmas
Tree in the Wilson Lounge for all
residents to enjoy.
“Bessie has a beautiful spirit and has
the ability to provide us with a lot
of life lessons,” said Molly Talbot,
Vice President of Life Enriching
Communities Foundation. “She and
her family know a lot about loving.”
Twin Towers looks forward to the day
when Parker Marie can volunteer on
the campus as well.
UC Capstone
Students Assist in Market
Research
U niversity
of Cincinnati
Masters students Kris Bader
and Katie Hageman are working
with Twin Towers to perform market
research and develop a
marketing plan charged with
improving awareness about
the community within the
marketplace.
Both are marketing students
enrolled in the Capstone
program, which allows
students to gain real-life
experience by requiring them
to work through a businessoriented
problem for an actual
company, and then find a
solution using their education.
“As students, we are not paid;
we instead are able to achieve class
credit. It gives us real growth in our
roles and real-world experience,” said
Bader.
The duo conducted market research
through interviews with staff, residents
and volunteers, including nonresident
volunteers, to learn what
people value about Twin Towers.
In addition, they interviewed
seniors with no connection to
Twin Towers, to determine how
people perceive the facility and
what it has to offer. They will
also evaluate the company’s
core competencies to establish
what makes Twin Towers stand
apart from its competitors.
Finally, they will create a
marketing campaign for Twin
Towers to attract new residents
and increase brand awareness
throughout the community. The plan
will be presented to Twin Towers in
late May.
University of Cincinnati Students
Kris Bader and Katie Hageman.
Bader appreciates this opportunity
with Twin Towers. “A lot of people [at
the University of Cincinnati] had had
real-world experience, and I hadn’t…
and that seemed pretty scary to me,”
he said. “But actually getting out there
and getting the experience, it makes
you feel like not just another number.”
Bader and Hageman were selected to
work with Twin Towers by Professor
Drew Boyd, Program Director of the
MS Marketing Program at UC. The
pair previously worked together on
another project, and Boyd thought
that they would work well together
again for Twin Towers.
“Katie is just as hard-working as I
am,” said Bader. “We complement
each other well. We are a pretty good
tandem.”
Student
Combines
Healthy Food
with Fun
D anielle
Ballantyne, a
student in the Didactic
Program in Dietetics at the University
of Cincinnati, visits the residents of
Hannaford Court at Twin Lakes each
month to teach them how to make
healthy snacks and educate them
about a nutrition concept related to
what they are making that day.
“I’ve been coming to Twin Lakes
for about two years now”, Danielle
said, “and it’s been a wonderful
experience. The cooking classes have
exposed the residents to new foods
and new ways of preparing foods so
they are healthier. It has created a
lot of excitement in Hannaford and
have seemed to create some new
friendships amongst the residents. It
also gives residents the opportunity to
share the recipes they grew up eating.
One of the residents actually prepared
a traditional fried rice for one of the
classes. It was great fun!“
Danielle will be replaced by another
dietetic student as she will move to
Charleston S.C in August to complete
her dietetic internship. She will be
Towers and Xavier
University have teamed
up to work on “culture change” in
order to provide the best services for
residents in the new health pavilion.
The idea of “culture change” is a
theme that Twin Towers has been
addressing for several years.
“We are looking to create an
environment of how to care for
elders that presents culture change
efficiently,” said Greg Hensley,
Executive Director of Twin Towers.
Twelve Xavier students participated
on teams to help evaluate processes
that will ensure the pavilion opens
with success and reaches its full
potential beyond the opening.
The Operational Team focused on
assuring a smooth transition for
residents and associates from the
current operational structure to the
operational structure at the new
building. The Human Resources
Team examined job descriptions and
training needs in order to supply
associates with all the information
they require.
Accountable Care Organizations.
They also examined how Twin Towers
compares to the competition in order
to ensure that they are kept at the
forefront of the consumer’s mind.
“It has been a real blessing to work
with the Xavier students and faculty,”
Hensley said. “They have been an
integral part of the work teams as
we transition our environment and
culture in a new direction focused on
relationships between caregivers and
residents.”
Jennifer Wessel, Community
to, as we have been very successful
with it so far.”
Life Enriching Communities
2011 Annual Report
In 2011, Life Enriching Communities (LEC) achieved higher levels
of satisfaction, placed greater emphasis on associate development,
further integrated our commitment to whole-person wellness,
remained strong financially, and began the process of transforming
our health care delivery service model.
In its purest form, an organization is simply a framework through which people
can successfully accomplish collective goals. Therefore, the heart of any
organization, then, is people. At LEC, our people – our associates – dedicate
themselves each day to helping fulfill our mission and residents’ expectations. This
enables our residents to plan and anticipate a future in which they will benefit
from a greater connection to their community, enjoy a lifestyle that is as full as
they want it to be, and engage in a supportive network in which their well-being is
priority one.
Last year, LEC enhanced our services and opportunities for resident choice
and well-being. We utilized technology to benefit residents and operate more
efficiently. We educated and encouraged associates to share their best. We
encouraged our communities to build upon their unique strengths of whole
person wellness, spiritual care and benevolent service. Further, we invested in our
communities through a new building for health care at Twin Towers and acquiring
additional land at Twin Lakes for future strategic use.
We will continue to focus on the following objectives in 2012 . . .
m Developing and Empowering a Talented Team
m Continuous Quality Improvement
m Maximize our Resources
m Create a New Healthcare Delivery System
m Growth with purpose
We have met the recent economic challenges over the last few years and look to
the future as we put forth our best amid growing demands for new services to help
people age well. We anticipate the future landscape of health care will be different
than today. Therefore, we began a collaborative process to transform the way we
provide health care and create a more efficient and effective delivery system.
Thank you for your continued interest in and support of LEC. We greatly appreciate it
and look forward to a bright future!
Collaborations
Key in 2011
W hole-Person Wellness
Solutions (WPWS) achieved
significant success in 2011 with joint
ventures and collaborations. WPWS
formed a joint venture with Link-
Age, to provide advisory services to
their 600 member organizations and
new business ventures. Link-Age
is an organization that offers cost
containment solutions and serves
as a platform for shared investment
opportunities among member
organizations The joint venture
product, Link-Age Connect, will
provide businesses and organizations
with whole-person wellness
education and strategic planning
to develop Living Laboratories
for product/ service testing and
development. Link-Age Connect
will also assist organizations and
businesses in identifying unmet needs
as related to utilizing a whole-person
wellness approach. Additionally,
WPWS participated in a variety of
consulting projects during 2011.
WPWS also entered into a
collaboration with California
State University to develop a
comprehensive whole-person
wellness approach to Falls Reduction
using their Living Lab at the Center
for Successful Aging.
In addition to these opportunities,
WPWS provided several national
Communities Board
Member Recognized For
Over 20 Years of Service
A t the Board Appreciation
Event in December 2011,
Barbara Havlovic was recognized for
her contributions to the various Life
Enriching Communities boards over
the last 20 years. She began her time
as a board member at Twin Towers
over 20 years ago while serving as
pastor at Walnut Hills/Avondale United
Methodist Church, which closed in the
year 2000. She later joined the board
at Twin Lakes when the planning and
building of the community began
nearly 15 years ago. Her earlier
experiences and relationships as
pastor of the Church of the Saviour, in Barbara Havlovic
Montgomery, became invaluable in
this process.
Barbara has since left the board after her almost 20 years
of service. States Havlovic, “It was time for a new energy
and a new thought. Time marches on.”
When asked what her most valued
contribution to Life Enriching Communities
would be, Havlovic explained, “the
spiritual contribution is what we hope to
bring to the community — we want to
meet the spiritual needs of the residents
while we’re here, as we are a faith-based
organization. My hope is that as we
continue to gain knowledge and the
ability to serve our residents, that we will
also be able to enhance the lives of the
older residents of the greater community
in which our facilities are located. It’s
something we are not only hoping to do
but obligated/privileged to do.”
Thank you, Barbara, for over 20 years of
continued service to the Life Enriching
Communities family!
is also well underway. The LEC Foundation
has raised nearly $400,000 towards its $2
million goal. Representatives of Twin Towers are
assembling a committee to plan a celebration
in honor of fundraising success and for future
successes to come.
“It’s about celebrating the life and love of
the people that have lived at Twin Towers
and individuals who have moved through the
transitions of care here,” explains Molly Talbot,
Vice President of Life Enriching Communities Foundation.
“It’s about dignified care.”
The New Health Pavilion is expected to be completed by
the end of the year.
