Message from the JCC President 

Dear Friends, 

“CELEBRATING LIFE”. This is the theme of our 22 nd Annual Founders Dinner Dance. It is truly a celebration 

of life in our community. We are celebrating the miraculous recovery of Steve Gold, one of our honorees. 

Our JCC is growing and thriving more and more each day after two years in our new facility. In 2012 we will 

be hosting the JCC Maccabi games in Rockland County. With all that is happening in the world today the JCC 

has become an integral part of our community where people can come to fi nd comfort and enrich their lives. 

Our JCC and Rockland County is able to serve its members and residents due to the commitment and hard 

work of many individuals. Tonight we are fortunate to be honoring Helene and Steve Gold, Linda Gerstley 

and Sheriff James Kralik. 

Helene and Steve Gold have been volunteering their valuable time for the JCC for many years. In addition 

to volunteering her time for many events Helene has been a JCC Maccabi coach which is a vital and time 

consuming commitment. Helene has also been supportive of Steve’s time commitment to the JCC which is 

greatly appreciated. I’ve had the pleasure of working alongside Steve Gold as a board member for as long 

as I have been involved with the JCC. He has always been extremely committed to the JCC and as President 

he worked endless hours in order to help transition the JCC to our new facility during a very diffi cult time. 

During his recovery he was always there with advice and guidance when needed. He has once again begun 

to take a more active role in helping us continue to move forward in serving the community. His positive 

attitude and constant smiling face has helped make everyone’s experience at the JCC a more pleasant one. 

Linda Gerstley has been a board member of the JCC for only a few years but her impact on the JCC has been 

tremendous. Linda takes an active role on many vital committees, including being the chairperson for the 

Jewish Book Festival and the Women’s Health and Wellness Symposium. Her efforts have helped to create 

meaningful and interesting programming for our JCC. Linda truly understands what it means to give back to 

the community. Her generosity is present on a regular basis and she sets an example that we are very proud 

of. Linda is extremely well deserving of the second annual Rubin Josephs Community Service Award and I 

am privileged to serve with her at the JCC. 

Sheriff James F. Kralik has been serving Rockland County for over 40 years. He is a man who defi nes what 

community service is all about. His hard work and innovation has had a positive impact in Rockland and has 

touched the lives of many. It’s a great pleasure to be able to recognize him with the “J” award at this years 

Dinner Dance. 

I would like to thank all of you who have supported the JCC and our honorees at this year’s event. Without 

all of you the JCC would not be able to provide the quality services to our members and the rest of the 

community. I would also like to thank David Kirschtel, Elena Heydt, the JCC staff and all of our journal 

committee members who have helped make this evening a great success. On behalf of our entire community 

and board of directors, I want to say that we are very fortunate to have such deserving honorees and we 

thank them and all of our guests who are here to enjoy this wonderful occasion.

Message from the JCC Chief Executive Offi cer

Dear Friends: 

Tonight we celebrate life. We celebrate the 22nd year life of the JCC, and we celebrate Steve Gold’s life. 

Additionally, we give thanks that all of our lives have been enriched by Helene Gold, Linda Gerstley, and 

Sheriff James Kralik. 

Albert Einstein’s quote speaks of the fact that every day is another miracle in all of our lives. We should not 

take for granted the wonderful opportunity we all have to make a difference each and every day. 

Helene & Steve Gold have worked tirelessly for the JCC and the Rockland Jewish Community. Steve has 

been a creative and passionate President of the JCC. Last year he fought a long battle with his health and 

he came within minutes of dying. Many people would have reduced their involvement in an organization like 

the JCC after such an experience. But no, Steve is focused on helping the JCC grow and he has begun work 

on preparing the opening and closing ceremonies in 2012 when we host the JCC Maccabi Games for the fi rst 

time ever in Rockland County. And Helene Gold? During Steve’s illness I have never witnessed a stronger 

person working full time, taking care of their two children Griffi n and Austin, and pushing Steve to recover. 

Helene has always been there, supportive of all of Steve’s endeavors, and in fact, coached our JCC Maccabi 

individual athletes for two years. 

Linda Gerstley, the recipient of the Rubin Josephs Community Service Award, has made a tremendous 

impact on our community. Not only does Linda Celebrate Life, but she lives life to the fullest! She is a 

wonderful giving person who not only gives of herself by volunteering as a Chair for two of the JCC’s 

premiere cultural events the Jewish Book Festival and the Women’s Health & Wellness Symposium, but she 

is always there whether it is helping with Scholarship Sunday, hosting the JCC board barbecue, or going on 

two missions this year to Israel through the Jewish Federation of Rockland and the JCC. 

Sheriff James Kralik, the recipient of the “J” Award, has been a public servant for 47 years. When you talk 

about Celebrating Life, we have all been fortunate to have Sheriff Kralik in our community protecting us and 

providing outstanding leadership to making sure that Rockland County remains one of the safest places to 

live. 

For twenty two years the JCC has been providing miracles to the community. Whether it be providing a 

home for a newly widowed senior, a scholarship for day camp for a child who otherwise would not be able 

to attend, delivering holiday baskets to seniors in a nursing home, or providing a meeting place for the 

community to celebrate our rich heritage, we are performing miracles. 

Thanks to the support of each and every one of you who are here with us today to celebrate, or those of you 

who took out ads in honor of our honorees or the JCC, you are also helping to perform miracles. 

We need all of you and our entire community, all of your friends, and acquaintances, and even all of those 

people out there who are not engaged at this point to join us and celebrate life. Help us to continue to make 

miracles every day...

As Vice President of Fundraising, it is my privilege to present to you, our supporters, the 22nd 

Annual Founders Dinner Dance Journal. Your generosity throughout the years has enabled us to 

continue to provide quality programming and servicing to our community. “Toda Raba!” 

This year’s Journal theme, “Celebrating Life”, is a basic theme throughout Judaism. We honor 

and celebrate the major stages of our lives with rituals: a bris, Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, marriage, etc. 

When we recite a toast, we say “L’Chaim,” which means “to life.” The Torah teaches us, through the 

613 Mizvot, exactly how G’d expects us to conduct and celebrate our lives. We’re told, among many 

other things, to help the poor, to serve the community, to treat each other with respect, and to give 

“tzedukah” according to our means. 

Tonight we are celebrating the lives of four truly great leaders of the Rockland County Community 

who honor us and our neighbors with their generosity, dedication, and “mitzvot” - Helene and 

Steve Gold, Linda Gerstley and Sheriff James F. Kralik. “Mazel Tov” to you and your families. 

I would like to personally thank our Journal Committee and our Chairpersons: James Gerstley, 

Gwen Rosenzweig, Brenda and Jay Lender, and Linda and Barry Russin. “Kudos” for the enormous 

amount of work and perseverance it took to make this Journal a success. My deepest appreciation

About Our Honorees: 

Helene and Steve Gold have been living in the same coop for 17 years – Steve 

concentrating on his poultry business and Helene raising their two hatches, Griffi n and 

Austin, when not pursuing her career. Both were brought up with a strong community, 

charity and family ethic, central to the core of their commitment to helping others. 

JCC’s Man of the Year 2002, Steve generously has devoted countless hours to the JCC 

Rockland. He is the immediate past president and remains a board member, executive 

board member and strategic planning co-chair. Steve also sits on the board of the 

RJCC. In the past, Steve served as vice president of fund raising. In addition, he is the 

chair of the opening and closing ceremonies of the JCC 2012 Maccabi Games. Steve 

is an honorary board member of the Rockland County Holocaust Museum and Study 

Center and a former board member of the New City Jewish Center. In 2009, Steve was 

the recipient of the Rockland County Certifi cate of Excellence award from the Helen Hayes Hospital. 

Helene, in addition to overseeing raising an active family, has been a volunteer at JCC Rockland and the individual 

athlete’s sports Maccabi coach in 2007 and 2008. Not content to simply rule the roost, Helene has pursued a successful 

career as a national account manager for Premiere Radio Networks. She represents advertising sales for such 

syndicated programs as Ryan Seacrest, Steve Harvey, Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Shawn Hannity and Dr. Laura. 

Honored to receive this distinguished award together, both Steve and Helene count their blessings and value their 

family, community and friends. As Steve would say, “Here’s to Life.” 

Linda L.G. Gerstley, recipient of the Rubin Josephs Community Service Award has a 

far-reaching history of providing service to our community. According to Linda, “Growing up 

in New Orleans, part of being an adult was giving back to the Jewish community. Everyone 

counted and just being Jewish together was an immediate special bond that we all appreciated. 

We had to work harder at it and we appreciated it so differently.” 

Currently, Linda serves on the boards of Semester at Sea, Jewish Federation of Rockland 

County and JCC Rockland. Linda, the founding Co-Chair of the fi rst JCC Rockland’s Women’s 

Health Symposium was instrumental in conceiving and implementing this major event for the 

community. The fi rst year brought together over 150 women who learned and shared about 

health concerns and solutions. The impact of this event was deep, since it provided a safe and 

welcoming place for all women of all ages, to connect, learn and grow as a community. Linda has 

agreed once again to be the Co-Chair for the 2 nd Annual Women’s Health Symposium, as well as being the Co-Chair of 

the Jewish Book Festival at the JCC. Her infl uence has made the book festival a tremendous success, linking prominent 

authors with avid readers. Linda is very present on a weekly basis at the JCC and shares her humor and warmth 

willingly. 

Linda lives in New City with her husband, Jim and they are proud parents of Justin 24, Jillian 22, Kaley 20, and Leah 18, 

and surrogate parents to Ben Jackson 25. 

James F. Kralik has been with the Rockland County Sheriff’s Offi ce for 47 years. During that time, 

he rose through the ranks and had been the Chief of Patrol for 20 years before being elected Sheriff 

in November of 1991 and re-elected in 1995, 1999 , 2003 and 2007. During his tenure as Sheriff, he 

has developed many innovative policies such as the Crime Awareness Program (C.A.P.) for local 

students; a full security/anti-terrorist manual; and implemented a handbook “Focusing on Fair 

Treatment for All” which is being used in many jurisdictions as a law enforcement training manual on 

cultural diversity. 

In addition, Sheriff Kralik is responsible for bringing to fruition TRIAD for seniors, C.A.R.E. (Computer 

Aided Rescue Efforts) for children, a full time Mounted Unit, a full time Marine Unit, a Forensic 

Computer Unit, an ICAC Satellite Task Force and an Anti-Terrorism Analytical Group (ATAG). The 

Sheriff serves on the Anti-Terrorism Executive Committee for New York State and was the fi rst 

Chairman of the Zone 4 Counter-Terrorism Committee in Rockland County. He is responsible for 

the development of counter-terrorism posters, the Operation Rockland Watch Program, and security training classes 

for public and private sectors within the Zone. He has also generated over $12 million in grants for additional staff and 

equipment. 

Sheriff Kralik and his wife Michelle live in Sloatsburg. They have three children, Tracy, Casey & Kerri, and fi ve 

grandchildren.

years, Joel and I have had the opportunity to work closely with Helene and Steve 

Gold, Linda Gerstley and most recently, Sheriff James Kralik. Collectively their 

visions for the potential of our community and their limitless effort have inspired 

us all. Their passion and commitment to our community is truly contagious! On a 

personal note, we are proud to call them friends and look forward to celebrating 

with them this year and in the future. 

There is tremendous joy in our hearts as we honor our friends Steve and Helene 

Gold. We celebrate Steve’s miraculous recovery. It is wonderful to see him back 

in action. Steve and Helene are long-standing supporters of the JCC and have both 

been involved on many levels. Steve has been a wonderful mentor throughout this 

past year. Steve and Helene have enriched our lives as friends and coworkers. 

Linda is truly inspiring with her energy and commitment to the JCC. She is 

involved on so many levels and has brought several meaningful programs to our 

JCC. I had the opportunity to travel with Linda to Israel this past October and share 

her passion for the Jewish community and commitment to Israel. Linda devotes 

tremendous time and energy to the JCC board. Our friendship extends beyond our 

work at the JCC and we are so glad to have the opportunity to celebrate with Linda, 

Jim and their family. 

Sheriff James Kralik has devoted his life to public service. He has been responsible 

for bringing many innovative programs to our community. Rockland is so fortunate 

to have him as our leader in the Sheriff’s Offi ce for over a decade. We are thankful 

for all of his support of the JCC and look forward to recognizing him at this year’s 

Dinner Dance.
