A new chapter Chief Executive Terry Twigger reflects on the past year—and the last 150. About 150 years ago, a forerunner of Meggitt’s current technology—the world’s first altimeter—went up in a hot air balloon. Since then, the companies that make up the Meggitt group have continued to provide smart engineering for extreme environments. They performed with distinction in two World Wars and while they were excelling in civil and military aviation in every decade that followed, they pioneered technologies for land-based transportation and the oil and gas, nuclear, power generation and renewable energy sectors. I am intensely proud of this heritage. It is the foundation of everything we do today, which is why we have dedicated part of this Review to celebrating it. As we pause to reflect on the extraordinary achievements of Meggitt’s businesses since the latter half of the nineteenth century, we can feel extremely optimistic about the group’s future. Through the extensive efforts of thousands of employees across all functions in the current period of great economic uncertainty, we ushered in a new Meggitt era, founded on the most significant modernisation programme undertaken in our corporate history. All the distinguished companies that make up Meggitt have been reorganised into a brand new structure. Each one is becoming a dedicated manufacturing facility, managed by five new divisions under the Meggitt banner. We embarked on a journey of transformation from a set of strong, individual businesses into one high performance engineering group, which runs on degrees of responsiveness to customers unattainable under the old structure. This is critical if we are to fight our corner in fiercely competitive and increasingly dynamic global markets. Having created the new leadership and divisional management structure needed for global teams to focus on common technologies and key markets, we launched a radical overhaul of our business processes. Once standardised, improved and fully integrated, they will drive Meggitt forward for decades to come. Mastering these powerful tools will be essential if we are to realise the huge potential of this transformational year. You can read our status report on some of them over the page. Transformation is a journey—very much in line with the philosophy of continuous improvement that characterises our factory operations. We must do the same across all functions, constantly looking for ways to deliver more and waste less. Above all, we must use our new organisation as a springboard from which to review and renew our approach to our markets and actively grow our businesses. That’s the key to job creation and professional development—and many more chapters in Meggitt’s history of continuing engineering excellence.
