Board visit to Indonesia The directors of Leighton Asia (Southern) have been rolling up their sleeves and getting their hands dirty – literally as well as figuratively – by holding their most recent Board meeting at the company’s Indonesian operations. The meeting, held at Leighton’s office in Balikpapan, was followed by a tour of the company’s plant yard and maintenance workshop. The Board then flew by helicopter to the ABK Loa Janan coal mine near Samarinda – on the way, making a detour to inspect Leighton’s new project at the MSJ coal mine, where work recently commenced. The helicopter then traced the new haul road the company is building for the mine, with the directors surprised to see an enormous Leighton logo on the road. It had been prepared by the project staff in anticipation of their visit. Joe Clayton, Leighton’s project manager at ABK, gave a presentation on the project and then joined John McBreen, Leighton’s mining operations manager, in hosting a tour of the site. The Board then joined the staff for a relaxing meal together at the Putri Ayu Cottages outside Samarinda. Managing director David Savage said there were many benefits in holding Board meetings in this way. “The Board gets a greater appreciation and understanding of our projects and the people who run them. At the same time, our staff are able to chat with our directors and realise how important their day-to-day work is to the overall functioning and performance of the company. “It’s not until you visit projects like the ABK coal mine that you appreciate the size and scale of our operations. Nothing beats actually walking around on site to understand what the company does, and how it does it,” David said.
