Student team wins flexible
packaging national award
First and second place for the Flexible Packaging
Association’s (FPA) 2007 Student
Flexible Packaging Design Challenge were
awarded for the second year in a row to
prototypes developed by Cal Poly students.
Industrial Technology student Gianni
Donati led the team that won $1,000 and the
first place title with their Cough Cure bench
sample. Team members Donati, Jimmy
Chun, Gilbert Posadas, Marisa Gaitan and
Micheal Lee also won a trip to the 2007 FPA
meeting in Florida to receive their award.
The Challenge judges commented, “The
innovative idea advances the use of flexible
packaging. It also incorporates several
features including consumer convenience,
single-serve doses and easy disposal and
storage into one package.”
Second place award winner was
Melanie Kronemann with her Cereal Later
design. Melanie won $500 for her work.
In congratulating the winners, Lauren
Kinard of the Flexible Packaging Association
noted that “a majority of the concept
outlines that advanced to the prototype/
bench sample development round of the
Challenge were from Cal Poly students.”
Congratulations also go to Faculty
Advisor Keith Vorst.

Hill wins packaging award
Ryan Hill, a packaging minor, was
awarded third place in the national
Paperboard Packaging Alliance (PPA)
Student competition. Hill received a
$500 award from the PPA for himself,
and $1,000 was awarded to the packaging
program. Shown in Chicago at
