Honoring Tradition - 

Moving Forward 

This past month has been one of great 

joys and great sorrows. On October 2nd, 

Marshal Anders Haugen and Lady Adriana 

became the extremely proud parents of 

twins Annika and Elise. While the pictures 

show these two young ladies as small, 

certainly when compared to Anders, they are 

healthy and at home and being watched 

over by several grandparents and great 

grandparents. 

On October 20th we held our Fall 

Ceremonial. We welcomed in 3 new Nobles 

of Osman Shrine.

Lodge in White 

Bear Lake. I would 

like to express my 

thanks to 

Worshipful Brother 

Mike Brady, also a 

member of the 

Provost, and the 

brothers of Garnet 

Lodge, for hosting 

the event. I would 

also like to thank 

Gary Winter, Chief 

of Staff and a 

member of Garnet, 

for his work 

coordinating the 

activities between Osman and Garnet. The 

lodge room was full and the ceremonial was 

again performed with masterful portrayals 

by the members of Osman’s Ceremonial 

Team. 

At the beginning of the year I was 

hoping that we would bring 100 new

big one. So far we have 

brought in 30 new members. 

We have our final full 

Ceremonial on December 8, 

details are on page 15 of this 

Osman. We have a number of 

potential members in the queue 

and there is always room for more. 

Osman has a Membership Committee 

that has come up with several events where 

potential members and their ladies could see 

and participate in the fun that we have and 

meet new friends. Our membership 

committee can only do so much. Each 

Noble of Osman is really 

a member of the 

membership committee. 

When your club or unit 

needs new members to 

help it grow, you are the 

ones that can make that

friend of Osman, Illustrious Sir John W.

announcement of this last visit has 

been extremely difficult to bear by 

all of Osman. John and I met almost 

10 years ago when I joined the divan. 

We didn’t know each other then. Over 

the years as we worked together in the 

finance room at the Circus, spent nearly 

160 meetings together, and working on 

the new building, I came to enjoy the time we 

shared, even though he was a Green Bay 

Packer fan. 

I will especially remember the Club and 

Unit seminar of 2011. It was at the end of 

January and the Packers were going to play 

the Bears in a very rare playoff game to see 

who advanced to the NFC finals. John 

shared in the laughs as I poked fun at his 

beloved Packers. The game the following 

day was heartbreaking for us Bears fans, but 

John was not one to rub it in. 

John and Osman had a great year in 

2011. I was even able to get John and all the 

Divan to have their faces painted like tigers 

and lions at the Circus. It was definitely 

outside of his comfort zone but John proudly 

wore his face for the entire show. 

John’s sportsmanship, generosity, 

friendship, business knowledge, durability in 

parades, his laughter and time together will 

truly be missed by all. 

Halloween has now swept past us. In 

front of us is a time to reflect on our lives. 

A time to say thank you and a time to help 

others. As Joan and I come to the 

conclusion of the year, we wish to say thank 

you to every member and lady of the 

Osman Shrine family. You have enriched 

our lives more than you can imagine.

IN MEMORIAM 

It is with a very heavy heart that we 

report that on Monday, October 22, 

Illustrious Sir John W Brockman Jr, was 

called from his earthly labors to reside in 

that house not made with hands, eternal in 

the heavens. Ill. Sir John most ably served 

Osman Shrine as Potentate in 2011. He was 

also serving Stewartville Lodge #203 as 

Senior Warden. Ill. Sir John's contribution 

to the Clubs and Units in Rochester as well 

as to Osman Shrine are too numerous to 

note, and John was not one to tout his 

involvement or his importance. He 

distinguished himself as a diligent and 

dedicated craftsman of the quarry. 

John was born Nov. 16, 1955 in Beloit, 

WI and moved with his family as a young 

boy to Mauston, WI, where he attended 

school and graduated from Mauston High 

School in 1973. He attended Western 

Wisconsin Technical College in LaCrosse 

and graduated with a degree in accounting. 

He moved to Rochester where he was 

employed at Bridgeman's Restaurant as their 

accountant.

Chamber. 

John enjoyed playing golf and darts, 

going to the cabin at Castle Rock Lake,

he especially enjoyed time spent with family. 

Survivors include his wife, Audrey; son, 

John (Natasha) of Sun Prairie,WI; daughter 

and son, Nora and Karl Betcher of 

Stewartville; his mother, Janet Brockman of 

Mauston; three brothers, Thomas (Diane) 

Brockman of Highland, IL, James (Laura) 

Brockman of Wonewoc, WI, and Mark 

(Mandy) Brockman of Mauston, and his 

nieces and nephews.

John was married in 1979 to Peggy 

Schueller. Following their marriage, the couple 

lived in Rochester. They were later divorced. 

John was employed by ROTAB Corp. in 

Rochester, was co-owner of Sandy Point 

Supper Club on Lake Zumbro and then John 

Hardys Bar-B-Q in Rochester, before 

becoming the sole owner of John Hardys for 

the past 10 years. 

John was married in 2007 to Audrey 

Betcher. Following their marriage, they made 

their home in Stewartville. 

John was a member of the Stewartville 

United Methodist Church and was a 30 year 

member of the Northern Light Masonic Lodge 

#81 in Mauston as well as being a member of 

the Masonic Lodge #203 in Stewartville. 

He was a longtime member of the Osman 

Shrine Center in St. Paul and was Potentate in 

2011, was a member of the Jesters and Dragon 

Patrol, and he marched in hundreds of parades 

with his fellow Shriners. John was a past 

member of the Rotary Club of Rochester, was 

a longtime member of the Elks Club in 

Rochester and had recently joined the 

favorite, we may have 

other options.

the Nobility, and the Seven elected Midwest Representatives to attend

before the December 4th Osman 

Shrine Stated Meeting. Pennants, 

Plaques, Advertising, and Ticket Order 

forms will be available at that time. It is 

an easy fund-raiser with excellent profit, 

no risk and unlimited potential! We again 

need to concentrate on increasing outside 

advertising in the coloring book, so start 

thinking of the people you buy from, and 

let them return the favor. 

Circus Mommy’s & 

Daddy’s 

Next month, you will be receiving your 

2013 Circus Mommy and Daddy tickets. 

Osman Shriners, their Ladies, Friends, 

and businesses purchase Mommy/Daddy 

tickets at a great discount and then either 

distribute them as they please, or return 

them to the office to be distributed by us. 

Many Mommy/Daddy tickets are 

given by individual Shriners to friends, 

business acquaintances, or family. But 

most are distributed via the office to 

provide a trip to the circus for those who 

would not otherwise be able to attend. 

Plus, Circus Mommy’s and Daddy’s 

receive unique pins each year, designating 

them as someone who has gone above our 

usual charitable activities and given back 

to the greater community. Mommy’s and 

Daddy’s are also proudly listed in our 

circus coloring book. 

Last year was heavy with requests from 

individuals as well as our normal groups 

and agencies. Times are tight for 

everyone, please help out as you are able. 

We have never turned away a needy child 

in 90 years, and we are not going to start 

now.

didn’t get a chance to try them all, but the 

ones I did try were very tasty. We had 

many different types of chili, steak based; 

hamburger and pork based and even a 

turkey chili. 

Our first place winner was Dave 

McKinnon. Congrats Dave! Second place 

went to Tyler Christianson. Tyler is the 

son-in-law of Barb and Glen Anderson. 

Glen, Tyler and Glen’s grandson Derek 

enjoyed the day’s events. Third place went 

to Chris (Hoot) Gibson from Dakota 

Lodge #7. 

I would also like to thank Derek Berg. 

He entered his chili and drove all the way 

from Rushford, MN, 2-½ hours away. He 

is a member of Mystic Star Lodge #69, 

Dragon Patrol and the Winona Shrine 

Club. It was a pleasure to meeting you 

and we hope you will join us again next 

year. Same goes for you, Chris. I am 

going to take your advice for next year’s 

event. Thank you for sharing. 

Our weather was a little chilly, no pun 

intended . . . But we had a heater and a 

portable fire pit outside that made it 

tolerable. We had roughly 45 people 

attend. Thank you all for coming out. 

We raised quite a bit of money for the 

Transportation & Aid Fund. We had a 

few raffles throughout the day, and many 

happy winners. Thank you to Frank Bild 

for the means to do the raffles. 

Thank you to all that made our first 

event so successful.

ONE-DAY-TO-MASONRY 

The annual One-Day-to- 

Masonry event will again be held 

at the Scottish Rite Temple in 

Minneapolis on Saturday, 

January 19 - 7:00am - 6:00pm. 

As in past One-Day-to- 

Masonry events, this one will 

again include a continental 

breakfast and a hearty lunch. All three 

degrees will be portrayed in full form. 

Brothers attending on the sidelines will 

enjoy the degree work every bit as much 

as the candidates will. 

The total cost for the day (but not 

including the 2013 Lodge dues) for 

each candidate will be $250. This $250 

fee includes all degree fees and 

assessments, the white leather apron, a 

ritual cipher and Minnesota Masonic 

Manual, the meals for the candidate and 

other items. 

All Master Masons are invited and 

encouraged to attend. For all current 

Masons, sideliners and degree workers,

degrees, or they can download a special 

One-Day-to-Masonry petition from the 

Grand Lodge website. The petition must be 

sent to the local Lodge along with the 

required fee and a request to attend this 

One-Day-to-Masonry event. 

Time is already drawing short, so do not 

delay—assist your candidate in completing 

his petition today. If you have any questions 

about which Lodge, procedures, special

The Chief’s Corner

2012 is just about gone and did it go 

by fast. Before you know it the 2013 

Circus will be here. Meeting and Plans are 

already in the works. It sounds like the 

2013 Circus will be a great success. 

Also coming up in December will be 

our Stated Meeting on December 4th at 

6:30 at the Osman Event Center. Our 

Club and Unit Holiday Party/Parade of 

Glory, always a special evening, is being 

combined with the stated meeting. On 

Saturday, December 8th, a joint Masonic 

Legion of Honor 

Wow! Another 

parade season has come 

and gone!! I want to 

personally thank all of 

our LOH members that 

came and carried colors, 

marched at a parade, or 

just came to support 

Rique Beslin LOH and Osman Shrine. 

We could not do what we 

do without you. I would also like to take a 

moment to thank all of the Ladies (and 

families) who have come to countless 

parades throughout the parade season to 

support LOH and Osman Shrine. Your 

support means more than you know! 

Osman has the very best Ladies around!! 

Our October meeting was held at 

Dakota Lodge in Hastings. We had a 

wonderful meal and of course some great 

fellowship as well! We presented the colors 

at the Ceremonial held on October 20 at 

Third Degree/Ceremonial in Minneapolis, 

then we will come to the Osman Event 

Center for Dinner. December 9th is

It's official! Chang completed 30 

parades for his 30th year in existence. 

Way to go Chang! The last parade for 

Chang this season was in River Falls, it 

was a beautiful fall day. Chang's head is 

hibernating, but his body is getting some 

needed repair. The truck and trailer are 

stored inside for the winter. 

At our last Dragon meeting we were 

surprised and elated to have our Outer 

Guard Sean Gardiner attend. Thanks, 

Sean, for coming down to the meeting.

Greetings Nobles and 

Ladies, 

We in the Rochester 

area are all saddened by 

the death of Illustrious 

Sir John Brockman. 

John has made a such a 

positive difference in the 

Art Pavlish 

lives of many in this 

area, all the units and the 

Rochester Area Shrine Club. At his 

Masonic service on Wednesday evening, 

one hundred and forty Masons 

participated – a statement of his 

dedication to the Masonic Fraternity and 

Shrine. We share in his loss with his 

family and friends. He will be greatly 

missed, but we will always remember the 

"good friends, good times, and good 

works" that surrounded him wherever he 

went. Peace be with you, Noble John. 

November! As you read this we will be 

done with the Hufli, pictures of the trip 

from Rochester to the Lost Spur will be in 

next month's Osman. As I write this, the 

coach is filled and we are anticipating a 

great time. Please take time to review all

Our September meeting was our 2nd 

annual Hawaiian luau with a great ham 

and pot luck dinner. We all had a good 

time at the social time and during the 

meeting even though it got a little chilly 

in the building. 

A white board for upcoming events 

and etc. was installed along with a 

bulletin board donated from Doug 

Sherman. The bulletin board is being 

used for ribbons and awards won by the 

Club along with memorabilia that has 

been found. We have had a good time in 

all the parades we have been in and are 

looking forward to a

Minneapolis Scottish Rite & Osman Shrine Event Center 

Grand Master Brian Beermann along with Osman Potentate 

Frank Spevak and Zuhrah Potentate Tony Krall invite you to 

a full day devoted to Masonry and the Shrine. 

The morning will witness a Third Degree the likes of which has never been experienced in 

Minnesota. The afternoon will showcase the Shrine in all its splendor with a very special, open 

Shrine Ceremonial. These events take place at the Minneapolis Scottish Rite. The evening’s 

festivities move to the Osman Shrine Center with an All Masonic Holiday Party, including 

Osman’s Parade to Glory. 

Any Lodge is encouraged to bring any Fellowcraft Mason to the Degree. They must 

have been proven proficient on the Fellowcraft Degree prior to December 8th, and 

accompanied by a Mentor from Lodge. There is no fee to participate, but a candidate 

must pay any regular Degree fees to the Lodge. Lunch is paid for candidates, $15 for 

visitors. If you would like to go to the All-Masonic Dinner Party that night at the new 

Osman Shrine Center, but are not in the Shrine ceremonial class, the cost at Osman will 

be $25.00. All candidates in this Third Degree are eligible to be a part of the Shrine 

Ceremonial (as are others not yet in the Shrine), but the degree is open to all including 

those who prefer not to join the Shrine at this time. 

To register a candidate for the Shrine Ceremonial, call the Shrine Center directly (see 

green box at right). Cost of the ceremonial is $150, and includes Fez and 2013 dues. 

This is a great time for ALL Masons to become Shrine Nobles.

Chanters 

Summer has departed for a few 

months. Thanksgiving is coming 

up very quickly and then we have 

snowballs – yippee. 

Hufli October 29: we will have 

the usual good time, lots of food 

and story telling from the nobles. 

Door prizes galore and lots of fun 

and good food. 

September we had the last 

parade of the year in River Falls, 

Wisconsin. Zor Temple was in 

force including their Potentate. 

Such a lovely day for a parade or 

for anything else we may have 

after the parade. The next parade 

is the Winter Carnival in January, 

a cold day to be walking or riding 

down the street. Coming up on 

October 20 is a ceremonial at the 

Garnet Lodge in White Bear 

We had a chili cook off in 

October at the barn. Some of our 

members were there and said it 

was a very nice party. There were 

lots of prizes from the raffles that 

were held. Glen Anderson 

brought home a prize or two.

of fall and the 

fellowship we share in this great organization. 

As we return our cars to the “garage” for the 

winter months to come, we will do the required 

maintenance to prepare for next summer’s parade 

schedule. Thanks go out to Al Ouradnik our 

“Chief Mechanic” as he does his magic with our 

road weary cars. A special thanks also, to Tim 

Gangnon, Burt Rovner and Gary Hoven for their 

willingness to transport our cars in the Mighty 

Mites trailer during our most demanding schedule. 

Also, thanks to Bob Misner for driving our trailer 

in many parades this summer, it makes a huge 

difference. 

While our engines are off, car bodies being 

repaired, oil changes made, we are far from being 

done for the year. Being a Mighty Mite is far from 

a part time event in the life of the members of our

unit. Many members of our unit are also 

active in the many activities that we are 

afforded as members of the Osman Shrine. 

Attending the many events between now 

and next summer should, and will be, an 

opportunity to bond and serve this great 

organization. 

A call from our Potentate: Our 

Potentate, Frank Spevak III, in his monthly 

“Pote’s Notes,” suggested that our Clubs 

and Units consider making a donation to 

the Transportation and Aid Fund that is in 

need of replenishment. Having heard the 

appeal, the Mighty Mites, I am happy to 

report, during our monthly meeting, 

donated $500.00 to this most worthy fund. 

We hope other groups will find it possible 

to make a donation at this time as well. 

The Shrine, Osman, the Mighty Mites, 

our family! During our monthly meeting, 

Noble Bob Misner stated that the Mighty 

Mites were a family he was proud to be a 

member of. What a great thought and 

compliment. High praise indeed, but a 

goal we all should strive for in this great 

organization. When members of the 

Osman Shrine truly feel welcome and 

valued, we will continue to grow as an 

organization.

Max Pecht II presided

reading of the minutes and Treasurer’s 

report. It was also reported that Noble 

George Moline is currently residing at the 

Veterans Home in Luverne, MN and that 

family members are trying to visit him 

each week. This is a fairly new facility 

that has about 85 resdients.

Greetings Nobles: 

It’s November already and 

another year is almost behind us. 

From the Circus in April to the River 

Falls parade in late September we 

had a great time. I want to take this 

opportunity to thank all those who 

turned out to make ready the 

Ron Clarstrom vehicles and to make this year’s 

parades a huge success. 

The first annual Osman Chili cook-off was held 

Sat. Oct. 6th. at the warehouse There were eleven chili 

entries of various tasting chili’s with raffles. I had an 

entry for the Directors Staff which didn’t place but 

then there is next year. About fifty people enjoyed the 

festivities.

indicated that the Shrine Club earned 

$389.00 for their efforts that night. 

Members were also reminded of the 

Younker’s Community Day sale, and 

encouraged to sell the booklets. We need 

to sell 75 booklets to share receipts from 

the two day event. 

Noble Bill Newell reported that we 

would need to contact Osman if we 

participate in the “ticket” program at the 

Chateau Raceway next year. Noble Brad 

Stout will make a contact and secure more 

information. 

Members were informed of the 

November 6th Election Day Salad 

Luncheon at the Lodge sponsored by 

OES, and encouraged to attend.

always has a good time.

Dunne arrived safe and sound 

in San Diego and was met

month and will be 

recuperating at home by the 

information about past donations. The 

Officers will be meeting to make 

recommendations that will be voted on 

during the November 8th meeting.

Van House. Their report will be 

forthcoming at the November meeting 

when Election of Officers will take place.

and will be held at the Austin Country

Potentate’s Lady Joan Spevak 

HAPPY THANKSGIVING! 

Congratulations are truly in order for our Marshal Anders 

Haugen and his Lady Adriana on the birth of their beautiful new 

twin girls, Annika Marie and Elise Hazel. Mom and Dad are 

doing fine too! We wish them many years of happiness and joy. 

On October 15th, I was very privileged to be the Mistress Of 

Ceremonies at the Supreme Queen's annual visit to Mat Sha 

Temple #62, Daughters of The Nile dinner. We were blessed 

with the company of many of our Shriners and Don Engles, 

Director of Development at the Twin Cities Hospital. He spoke 

about the contributions of time, money and talents donated to 

the 22 hospitals in our system and how much our continuing 

efforts help our patients. 

Our evening also brought Past Grand Master John Cook 

performing an impromptu song with the Farmington Bethel of 

Job's Daughters. They were helping us by serving dinner. They 

are a reconstituted Bethel just getting off the ground. Noble Art 

Lingo passed his Fez around for them and we all chipped in to 

support our future generation. John also brought Grand Master 

Brian's message: we are all in this together and when we reach 

out to others, whether it be for philanthropy or friendship, we 

are making the world a better place for all. 

We enjoyed a glorious day in Minnesota for 

the Fall Ceremonial at Garnet Lodge in White 

Bear Lake. The new candidates are pictured on 

the inside front cover of the Osman. It was a 

great pleasure to meet and get to know our 

new Nobles and their Ladies. 

Are you like me? Do you start your holiday 

shopping in January? If so, you may be ready 

to wrap. If not, consider an Osman Tie or 

Forget-Me-Not Pin. We have a few available. 

You will make someone happy and contribute 

to the Transportation and Aide Fund at the 

same time. Just contact me, one of the Divan

Scottish Rite - both ways - so that 

we can enjoy the Ceremonial and 

return to Osman for the All 

Masonic Dinner. Please see the 

detailed flyer on page 15 for the 

schedule. Come join in as we 

welcome our new Shriners. 

The pumpkins are carved, apples 

picked, turkeys prepared and ready to be made into delicious 

culinary delights as we reflect on our blessings on Thanksgiving. 

We will be feasting at home with family and friends. One little 

tradition we have is to set an extra place setting for one who 

cannot be present physically, but will be in spirit.

the Auxiliary, 

Our October luncheon was an event to 

remember. Our guest speaker was Eleanor 

Ostman who was the Food Editor at the 

St. Paul Pioneer Press for 30 years. She was 

so entertaining. She gave a hilarious talk 

which included a historic walk through her 

life in food. Eleanor shared some of her 

world food travel adventures with us. Our 

delicious lunch was one 

of Eleanor’s recipes from 

her book “Always on 

Sunday” which Chef

prepared for us. There 

was a book signing 

following her 

presentation. Now, we 

will all be able to prepare 

these delicious dishes!!

given to the Auxiliary which is really great.

special needs of each

driving force in 

collecting tabs in the 

Austin area. He has 

set up collection areas 

to collect both cans 

and tabs. He collects 

the cans and tabs, takes 

them to the recycling 

center and has the 

recycling center send a check to the Osman 

Womens Auxiliary. We really appreciate all 

your work on this ongoing project, 

Charles. 

We recently received a large donation of 

pop tabs from a new source. B.J. Ulry 

from Galesville, Wisconsin, has been 

collecting tabs for years. He used to collect 

tabs for another organization and this year, 

thanks to Merlin Huber from 

the LaCrosse Shrine Club, he 

has decided to collect tabs for 

the Auxiliary for Shriners 

Hospital for 

Children-Twin 

Cities. B.J. has a 

wide network of 

individuals saving 

pop tabs for him. 

His network not 

only covers 

Wisconsin and 

Charles Van House from the 

Austin Shrine Club has been a

Institute” on Saturday, November 17. You 

won’t want to miss this special event. This 

will be a luncheon and a tour of the newly 

remodeled Swedish Institute. This event

Suzie Schumacher was 

called home at the last 

minute for a family 

emergency and in her 

place she sent us Past Supreme Queen 

Eleanor Green. What a fantastic lady! All 

the Ladies of the Household worked their 

magic and it all turned out great. 

The ceremonial on Monday brought us 

two new members, Carmen Haagenson 

and Meghan Faundeen. Both were very 

enthusiastic to be joining us. Carmen, a 

former patient at our Shriner's Hospital, is 

a student. Meghan is from St. Cloud. We 

are very fortunate to have these women 

joining us.

The evening brought the banquet. 

Everyone enjoyed a turkey dinner with all 

the fixings. Dessert was crown shaped 

cookies made by Pr. Jan Lingo and PQ 

Jane Larson. 

Tuesday brought us the hospital visit. 

The tour was very informative and we 

learned about some of the new technology 

and research. Recently a beautiful Nile 

crown was put on display at the hospital. 

The little girls love looking at it! 

Wednesday we went to Duluth and 

enjoyed Lotus Temple #7’s Ceremonial for 

a new Princess. It was a wonderful and 

inspirational time. 

The Annual Nut & Candy Sale order 

forms have been sent to members. Can’t 

wait to munch those wonderful nutty 

snacks! Watch for Nile Night at the 

Theatre, Winter date TBA, and info. on
