Pote’s Notes
What a fun filled month April has been!
We all started the month with the 90th
annual OSMAN SHRINE CIRCUS. We
had, what I think, one of the, if not the best
circus I have ever seen. The Chicago Boyz
and the motorcycle acts kept everyone on
the edge of their seats.
We haven’t heard an exact number yet
but our circus manager, John Davenport
told us we had a number very close to
30,500 total people for all ten shows. Let’s
all give a tip of our cap to Chief Rabban,
Roger Berge and the entire circus
committee. We sold all of our light up toys
and even though we bought twice as many
as last year we ran out of the five foot tall
blow up aliens. Let’s all hope we can keep
this positive trend going and just keep
getting better and better shows.
Then after just enough time to get
An enthusiastic Shriner, George Carlson,
gave Illustrious Sir Don Harmsen a
document on the history of the
horseshoe. I loved it so much I
had to share it with all of you.
The belief in the magic or
superstition of the horseshoe has
been shared by the savage as well
as the nobility for at least 5,000
years!
So predominant was the belief that
the horseshoe possessed mystic powers to
dispel the devil that there was, at one time, a
horseshoe engraved on the tile of the porch
of Staninfield Church in Suffolk, England.
The congregation seemed to have more faith
in its presence than they did in the power of
caught up on my sleep it
was time for Grand Lodge
of Minnesota. This year
the session was held at the
Marriott Northwest in
Brooklyn Park. This was
the first time I have been
able to attend the annual
session and I can tell you it
won’t be my last. It is
always a great time when I
can spend time with
people that share similar
interests. We can all be
very proud of MWB Brian
Beerman. The ceremonies
and the guest speakers and all the meals we
shared made for a truly wonderful
experience.
Saturday the 13th was another first for
Potentate Don Harmsen
and Lady Terrie at the precircus
briefing, Wednesday
night at the Coliseum
The magic of the lucky horseshoe
holy water, which other churches of that era
used for the same purpose.
Long ago there were some
who believed the origin of the
horseshoe as a lucky charm is
ascribed to a legend concerning
St. Dunstan and the Devil. The
Saint was widely known for his
ability as a blacksmith, and, the
legend goes, one day the Devil
came asking to have his hooves reshod.
Recognizing the Devil, St.
Dunstan fastened him to a wall in the usual
manner and went to work on the hooves
with all the roughness of his muscular arms.
The Devil screamed
with pain and begged
for mercy. As a price
me. Along with Outer Guard
Mark Galloway and Lady Lorie,
and our Captain of the Guard
Sean Gardiner, I was able to
attend the open installation for
the new Queen of Mat-Sha
Temple #62. Sara Malewitz
took the obligation for her new
title. Outgoing Queen, Judy
Moon did a fabulous job and
I’m sure she will be there for
Sara if need be. The ceremony
the ladies presented was very,
very impressive. Osman will be
joining Mat-Sha Temple this
fall for their celebration for the
100th anniversary of the
Daughters of the Nile. November 2nd is the
date of their event and Osman will have our
fall ceremonial on the same day. We will all
Continued on page 4
for releasing him, St. Dunstan is said to have
extracted the promise that the Devil would
never make his appearance where a
horseshoe was displayed.
A horseshoe over a door is supposed to
keep away evil spirits and bring good luck to
those within. If hung prongs down, the
good luck will fall out.
The Potentate’s pin with the star and
tigers claws inside the horseshoe with the
prongs up signifies the desire/wish of the
Shrine always having good luck. The pin
also represents how lucky we are to be
Shriners.
Thanks again, George, for this wonderful
bit of information.
POTE’S NOTES
Continued from page 3
celebrate together at the St. Paul Masonic
Center on Plato. More information will be
coming as the date gets closer.
On the 15th, Tax day, Roger and John
put together a circus workers appreciation
party at the Osman Event Center that was
almost as fantastic as the show they put
together. The socializing and the story
telling was going on to a point where they
had trouble getting everyone settled down so
we could start eating. We were all having so
much fun I think Geri could have served
hot dogs and beans and we all would have a
great time. But in true Lost Spur style Geri
and Chef Mike put out a spread that
couldn’t be beat.
But the Lost Spur/Osman Event center
really shined the next night. The 16th was
the 78th anniversary of the Lynnhurst
Dinner. For those who don’t know what that
is, don’t feel bad. I didn’t know a whole lot
Membership Report
e ree R’s of Osman
e three R’s of Osman are
Recruitment, Restoration and Retention.
Osman has a membership of 1183
Nobles, with around 130 who haven’t yet
paid their 2013 dues. If you are first line
signers for 2 new nobles of Osman this
year 2013, your 2014 Osman dues of
$55.00 will be paid all you have to pay is
the Per-Capita and Hospital assessment of
$20.
My committee has challenged the
about it myself. The Dinner was started as a
celebration for the new incoming Minnesota
Grand Master. It started as a turkey dinner
with all the trimmings. I talked with some
of the senior members from Lynnhurst
Lodge and tried to get as much information
as I could.
Originally it was held at the lodge but
when they suffered the fate of so many other
lodges and sold their building they moved
the event to Zuhrah Shrine Temple. After
Zuhrah sold their temple the Brothers
moved the event to a hotel in downtown St.
Paul. I didn’t make it to that event but I was
told by people that went last year that it was
“a lot like our Hufli, only not as good”.
Someone suggested that they try the Lost
Spur and I think everyone was very pleased
with the outcome. The staff at the Lost Spur
served 30 tables of Master Masons and
everything went great. I heard a lot of
compliments and I hope they continue
having the event at Osman. Lynnhurst
Lodge has changed their name to Templar
Divan of Osman to bring in 2 new
Nobles each, and also each Club or Unit
to bring in 2 new Nobles each.
Remember to take advantage of Shriners
Sunday Fun-day which are the 3rd
Sunday of the month. Bring a new
candidate for the Shrine for dinner and
fun.
Don’t forget the Spring Ceremonial at
the Masonic center on Plato. Come in
your Unit uniform and bring a candidate.
The Membership committee.
Lodge and I want to personally thank the
planning committee for giving Osman an
opportunity to shine.
Lastly, I would like to remind everyone
about our upcoming Ceremonial. Get your
petitions in and our ceremonial team will
put on a great show for the new nobles. May
4th is the date and it will be at the Masonic
center on Plato. While at the Lynnhurst
dinner the new Grand Master, David E
Olson, asked about possibly putting on
another Big Tent Event, like last year. My
counterpart from Zuhrah, Al, and I talked it
over and we are going to see if we can make
it happen. We’re getting a late start but I
think we can make it happen. Thanks for
everything.
We sure are lucky to be Shriners.
From the TICKET BOOTH
Ladies and Gentlemen … children of all ages!
Well – how did we do?
Here is what I have so far:
Our attendance broke 30,000 for the
first time since 2008. at is a increase
of about 2,000 fans!
e odometer on our website rolled
over at 100,000 visits, and is now
reading over 120,000 total visits!
Our advertising was first rate, and
the show was fantastic! Roger Berge
brought in e Chicago Boyz for the first
time ever, and they were an
overwhelming success!
e Extreme Motorcycle Show was
just unbelievable! Fans told us that
either of those acts alone was worth the
price of admission!
Floor event sales were strong, and the
clowns have warned me that we will
need more photo covers for next year.
Speaking of the clowns, did you catch
their new cannon skit? Years in the
making – it looks like Imperial
Competition material to me!
Sales were strong! Some of the
novelty sales people got home early
because there was not a light-up toy left
in the house Sunday afternoon!
Inflatables, snow cones and cotton
candy, and wearable sales looked brisk
too!
Finally, there were about 200 happy
(and tired) faces at the After Circus
Party!
Despite being “e hardest fun we
ever had!” we all had
a good time doing John Davenport
something big and
exciting together! at’s just the way we
are at Osman Shrine!
So, whether you sold, or directed, or
assembled, or inflated, or repaired, or
gazed into flashbulbs, or yelled “Getem-here!”
or “Follow Me!” you were a
part of what Osman Shrine does best!
Whatever you did, wherever you
were, we needed your help, and OUR
circus would not have been the same
without YOU!
anks for another great year!
Provost
Our May 20th meeting
will be back at the Lost
meeting at the Little
Venetian Inn. Social
hour is at 6:00pm,
dinner at 6:30pm and
Eric Seavey meeting at 7pm. July’s
meeting will be the
Provost Picnic. Please try to attend our
meetings to socialize as well as to continue
to make the Provost Guard a great Unit.
e Osman Circus had quite a number
of Provost Nobles working or attending in
a social aspect. It was good to see so
many familiar faces. We were able to help
find a number of lost parents, did a great
job in managing parking and working
with the State Fair Police. I think our 1st
Lt. and Chaplain Mike Brady must have
helped hundreds avert a restroom
emergency! ank you to everyone who
Ushers Dee Hobbie and SusAnn With Chief of Staff Mark
Sandstrom and Provost Paul Kuehl. SusAnn is a volunteer usher
helping escort our wheelchair patrons. She was geared up for
action with her oven mitts, pickle and construction helmet!
came out to the Circus. Without your
hard work the Circus couldn’t be such a
successful and safe event.
e Spring Ceremonial is May 4th at
the Masonic Center at 200 E. Plato Blvd.
in St. Paul. We could use the assistance of
Provost Guard Nobles to help with
directing parking. is is also a great
opportunity to make a positive impression
on our candidates, as a member of the
Provost Guard is often the first Shriner
seen at an event.
e Next Club
and Unit Meeting
will be on May
14th at 7pm at the
Shrine Center.
Officers should
plan to attend.
Other
upcoming events
in May are the
Twin Cities
Hospital Day and
the Twins Game,
both on May 17th.
e Twin Cities
Hospital is also
celebrating its 90th
Anniversary on
May 18th. Come
out for fellowship
and a reminder of
why we work so
hard as Shriners.
e Stated
Mike Brady and Eric Seavey
Meeting will be on June 11th at 6:30 pm
and Provost Guard Nobles are encouraged
to attend and help with tyling.
e First Parade of the year will be the
South St. Paul Kaposia Days Parade on
Friday June 28th. I’m confident that,
Sheiks
Greetings
from the Sheiks
2013 is off to
a great start with
the completion
of the 90th
addition of the
Shrine Circus.
is event like
Wally Larsen
none other
affords a great
chance to renew and foster new friendships
as we travel the trail of this brotherhood.
Each event of the year gives our
members a chance to join together as a
Sheik while serving in some way where
needed. No event pulls the Sheiks
together more than the Osman Circus, as
was witnessed again before, during and
after our 90th Osman Shrine Circus.
• Monday, setup day, found the Sheiks
ready to get things started by assembling
both Sheik booths while sharing stories
of circuses past.
• Wednesday, again, found a willing
group of Sheiks ready to stock and
prepare our booths with circus treasures
that we knew would bring smiles to the
faces of so many kids during circus
week.
• ursday thru Sunday, circus days,
brought the Sheiks together as always,
St. Paul Zagalas
in strong numbers, with the
help of several of our Ladies
and friends. Circus week
brings our unit together more
than any other event of the
year. Sheiks have always
answered the call when it
comes to our circus.
• Sunday night, teardown
night, found no shortage of
willing Sheiks to finish the
task of bringing the 90th
Osman Circus to its close.
Sheiks, like all the other
Shriners, in our many clubs and
units, work before, during and
after our circus because it is who
they are. We know the
importance of our circus and
what it brings to our great
brotherhood.
Special thanks! e Osman
Sheiks have, as many say,
“manned” their booths for many
years. While it is true that we
have answered the call of our
Temple to work the circus we know that
without the help of our families and friends
our task would be overwhelming. e
Sheiks have had several SUPER GALS
work the circus for Osman as far back as I
can remember. Some are veterans and
Catherine Perron, Steve Hoyer and Sandy Perron. A
big THANK YOU to the super gals who work with the
Sheiks circus after circus.
Pam and Jim Thoreson
others new to circus week. We, the Sheiks
of Osman, thank the following for their
commitment to the Sheiks and Osman:
Chanters
Happy May to one and all in Osman
land!
We had a great circus in spite of snow
and cold, with a full house more than once.
e Chanters helped as always in
assembling toys and ushering. Some of the
fellows made every show in spite of back
pains, etc. due to standing on concrete all
day. However, it is a good time and
worthwhile endeavor. We sang the
National Anthem at the final show, with
appreciated help from a few other Shriners.
Jerry Launderville has been ill, and his
wife also has not been well. He has
whatever support we can offer.
e Chanters sang as per usual at our
last stated meeting. We are a small group,
but the fellows are very dedicated and loyal.
Remember the Ceremonial on May 4th
at the Masonic Center on Plato. Let’s show
up and let the new Nobles know they are
welcomed.
We have Hospital Day coming up on
Friday, May 17th. is is always a good
time and very informative. Nobles come in
from all over Osman land and Canada to
see and hear what is going on at the
Hospital. Read about it in the next
Osman.
We are in need of a piano accompanist
for our group. We need your help – your
wife or neighbor may know of someone,
Shriners International Awareness Day
Shriners everywhere need to mark their calendars and make plans to participate in
International Shrine Awareness Day on June 6. e date recognizes the day the
Imperial Council was formed — June 6, 1876.
On this day every year, Shriners will be asked to wear their fez, if appropriate, or a
hat, shirt, pin or other item with the fraternal logo to help
recognize fellow Shriners and increase awareness.
We encourage Shriners everywhere to organize events at their
temples or in their local communities and to invite the public to
participate in order to increase awareness of Shriners. Other
suggestions include posting information about Shriners
International Awareness Day on your temple websites and in
your temple calendar, publications and electronic
communications. Be sure that each and every Noble knows
about Shriners International Awareness Day and encourage them
to participate. is day of recognition is an opportunity for every
Shriner to share information about the fraternity, its history and
the benefits of becoming part of an organization that is
dedicated to fun, fellowship and philanthropic support.
Since we are probably
you can make it
to a parade, let
great parade
I believe the Director's Staff had the
distinction of having the oldest Noble
thank Clare Law, who will turn 96 in
July, for his commitment to the Osman
his greetings from
At our last dinner
to have any meetings
in July or August
because of our parade
schedule.
Shriners Hospitals for Children - UPDATE
Mayo Clinics and
Shriner’s Hospitals:
On March 27th, we
announced to the world
that Shriners Hospitals
for Children is now the
15th member of the
Mayo Clinic Care
Network.
e great expertise of
our Shriner’s Hospital
System and doctors
combined with the world
class medicine and
Douglas E.
Maxwell,
President &
CEO
research accomplished at the Mayo Clinic
group will make our Shriner’s Care
Presence, the premium pediatric care in the
upper Midwest. is is something we can
all take great pride in. We already have 8
Mayo physicians seeing Shriner children at
our hospital.
During our meetings with Mayo, we
were informed that the children of the
inland Southwest are being underserved in
orthopedic care. We have begun exploring
Shriners Hospitals initiating our pediatric
orthopedic care at Mayo’s new Hospital in
Phoenix, Arizona.
Follow-up Clinics:
As I have traveled this Spring to the
various regional Shrine association
meetings, part of my message is to ask if
the Shrine Hospital is quite some distance.
is makes those 30 minute follow-up
visits an all-day event for the mother and
child and driver. I’m suggesting that the
Shrine Center might want to begin
exploring accomplishing this clinical event
at a medical facility within their own town.
• A medical entity that would have X-ray
capability,
• Preferably an orthopedic surgeon, but a
general physician would be fine
• A capability to allow Shriners Hospital
to use the space frequently enough to
take care of these visits.
Richard N. Purcell, Divan Dennis W. Boom PP Earl J. Holcomb
• Maybe one afternoon a week, or on an
“as scheduled” and needed basis.
is new concept is hoped to be able
to help with our Shriner’s transportation
budgets and cost and the hardships
imposed on our patients families for
those necessary check-ups. In addition
our drivers, who always get up so early to
pick up the family and drive them to the
hospital for those early morning visits.
God bless them all and keep them safe.
Wounded Warriors Update:
e interest shown by our
membership this Spring to the news that
we are going to be helping America’s
Wounded Soldiers has been
overwhelming and very heart warming.
In January, I had my first meeting at
the Pentagon with the Under Secretary of
Defense for all Military Medical Affairs.
e Under Secretary, Dr. Jonathan
Woodson, first received the quick version
of the history of the Shrine Masons and
why this group of men have been
historically so charitable and giving.
Fortunately, Dr. Woodson, having
done part of his residency at our Boston
Burns Hospital, knew of Shriners skills
and expertise and the fraternity’s history
of talking care of those who need care
without regard to the patient or family's
ability
to pay.
He then
said to
me
“Shriners are good people.”
I then explained to him why we were
offering our help. Shriners are patriots,
many have personally served in our
various conflicts and wars from World
War ll to Korea, to Viet Nam, Desert
Storm, and now Iraq and Afghanistan.
Shriners Hospitals have very skilled
physicians in our 20 US Hospitals placed
from Hawaii to Boston, who are experts at
helping individuals with missing limbs and
the trauma associated with a sudden event.
Our doctors are at the top of their field
handling the constant adjustments required
of the artificial limbs. Our multi located
hospitals could save the injured soldier a lot
of time and energy by coming to one of our
nearer facilities instead of having to take
the much longer path back to a military
hospital with similar capabilities.
Dr. Woodson did ask that if, in addition
to helping those soldiers who have lost
limbs with the prosthesis adjustments,
could we also help with the scars they get
from the blast flame that happens with the
IED’s explosion? I reminded him that this
is certainly another aspect of our mission,
our reconstructive burns surgery.
His next comment caught me a little off
guard: “Mr. Maxwell, I know the Shriners
and their humanitarian mission very well,
and I know that what I am about to say is
not at all why you are here. But each of
these soldiers have very fine insurance
called Tricare and Shriners will be offered
this to help defer your cost of providing
these services.”
Again I re-affirmed his
comment that this is not
why we are doing this…
but it will certainly help
with all of the care we
provide to many children
from all over the world.
In further
conversation that
morning, Dr. Woodson
being well aware of our physicians being
among the world’s best at what they do,
asked if we could do exchanges of
physicians with fellowships between the
United States Military doctors and the
Shriners Hospitals doctors
And then we moved to the area of
Research. Dr. Woodson could foresee the
interaction of our two great Research
Programs to come up with new cures for all
of humanity.
It was a very good first meeting.
Yours in the Faith,
Douglas Maxwell
Chairman of the Board of Trustees
Shriners Hospitals for Children
Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Kenneth
Guidera and Director of Research, Dr.
Raymond Novak, have been meeting with
Military leaders to discuss this new direction.
Dear Auxiliary Members and Friends of
the Auxiliary,
It was really great to see so many
Osman Womens Auxiliary Members
working at the Shrine Circus! It is always
such a fun event, and it is so rewarding to
see the excitement and joy on the faces of
all those children! anks for
volunteering your time!
Our first social event for 2013 was
wonderful! We were pleased so many of
Elizabeth Ekholm, Pati Kachel, and Jan
Kellogg.
Toys and pop tabs given to the Osman Womens Auxiliary for the children at Shriners
Hospital for Children-Twin Cities. Pictured from left to right are Ellen Maine, Bev West,
was our event that included children, and
it was fun to have the grandchildren,
great-grandchildren and great niece at the
event. e lunch was delicious, and our
guest presenter was very entertaining. Pati
Kachel, a professional story teller,
portrayed Miss Beatrix Potter. With her
English accent, she made us feel like we
were in England while she told the
remarkable life story of Beatrix Potter.
She also read a Beatrix Potter story to the
children. A very special “thank you” to
Elizabeth Ekholm and Jan Kellogg for
planning and hosting this very delightful
event as well as donating the Beatrix
Potter tea set and Beatrix Potter book for
the raffle items.
It is just
amazing that we
keep receiving such
wonderful toys for
the children at
Shriners Hospital
for Children – Twin Cities. is past
week, we received many fabulous stuffed
animals and toys from the Alexandria
Shrine Club, Bev West, Ellen Maine and
Jennifer Hill. ank you all so much. We
really appreciate receiving all these toys,
and of course, the children at our
Hospital love them! In addition to the
stuffed animals, Bev West also brought us
many pop tabs which she and her coworkers
have been collecting over the past
year. ank you to everyone who
continues to collect pop tabs for us. You
are all making a difference.
We are so fortunate to have these women
who so willingly dedicate their time and
talents to serve on the General Womens
Auxiliary Board. ey are doing fabulous
work for our Hospital and making a
difference in the lives of the children at
our Hospital. Shriners Hospital for
Children – Twin Cities is the only Shrine
Hospital that still has an Auxiliary, and I
thank these women for their hard work to
keep our Auxiliary forward thinking,
active, and vibrant. e next time you see
one of these dedicated women, please tell
them thank you for their many hours of
volunteer work.
Two important Hospital dates to mark
on your calendar are May 17 and May 18.
May 17 is Hospital Day which is always a
very interesting day. is is an
opportunity to hear what is new at the
Hospital, and to hear from some of our
patients and their families. May 18 is the
90th Anniversary celebration for Shriners
Hospital for Children – Twin Cities. We
will also be celebrating the 90th
Anniversary of the Womens General
Auxiliary. It would be great to attend
both of these days as this is what we are all
about – helping the children at the
Hospital.
Also, you won’t want to miss our next
Auxiliary events on May 11 and June 13.
Please note that the May 11th event is a
date change. is event was originally
scheduled on May 18, but we changed the
date due to the 90th Anniversary
celebration. May 11 will be a luncheon at
the St. James Hotel in Red Wing, MN,
with an entertaining guest speaker from
the Goodhue Historical Society. is is a
fabulous location with many shopping
opportunities in the area. Also, back by
popular demand is our Auxiliary
sponsored BUNCO Party on June 13,
ursday evening. is event is for
everyone. We had many men and women
attend this event last year and everyone
had a great time! We will again have a
