Ethiopia – Aid Effectiveness in the health sector UN - United Nations UNICEF – United Nations Children’s Fund UNDP – United Nations Development Fund USAID - United States Agency for International Development USG – US Government VCHW- Volunteer Community Health Worker WHO – World Health Organisation Methodology This report is based on original research carried out between July and September 2009 using qualitative methods. The process was divided into five different and consecutive stages. 1. Preparatory research A literature review of all existing material such as publications, policy, and case study research and methodologies helped to shape the research design. After identifying the different sources of information, a list of key informants from different backgrounds was elaborated. 2. Contact and networking Before the interviews, all possible contributors to the research were contacted; the purpose and scope of the research was explained (a summary of the research plan was sent to all the informants), and several letters and faxes were sent out, asking for permission to carry out the interviews. 3. Research trip and interviews At the end of July and beginning of August 2009, interviews were carried out in Addis Ababa. Notes were taken by hand during the interview and afterwards. Thus quotes are sometimes approximations. Some interviewees were then contacted again by email in order to clarify certain aspects of their contributions. 4. Review of information and elaboration of a first draft After gathering all the information, a first draft was elaborated and sent to Action for Global Health at the end of August 2009. The report was subsequently adapted according to the suggestions and comments received. 5. Final version The final version of this report was submitted on the 15 September 2009.
