THE CITY of Quesnel
came out swinging
this week in their submission
to the CRTC about
proposed broadcasting
In the submission.
Mayor Steve Wallace listed
a number of concerns
with the proposed regulations,
in particular with
ABOUT ONE dozen
people have told the City
of Quesnel that they
"We've received 10
abnormal; this is a normal
process. You get these
notice and sue everybody
and eventually the courts
determine who's liable,"
says City Administrator
Doug Ruttan.
The first six came in
shortly after the blast, but
a few more people have
just served notice.
They are technically
past the two-month time
limit where they're
allowed to serve notice,
says Ruttan, but the city
isn't going to press the
point.
"This is a big issue.
This has big implications.
Six peophe don't exist
anymore and others have
gone through traumatic
experiences. There's a lot
at stake here. So we're not
going to provide any
Quesnel Cariboo Observer
for Fox run
And, says Terry's dad, it's really paying off
By LEAH BLAIN
Observer Reporter
THE LAST few
weeks leading up to the
Terry Fox Run are always
busy at the provincial
headquarters in the Lower
Mainland.
The provincial director
has a million details to
look after. He and the
staff have already sent out
packages to every community
in British Columbia;
some for the run
organizers and some for
the media.
This is important to
Fred, who has been the
provincial director since
1994. Fred is Terry Fox's
older brother.
"It's been 20 years
since Terry was diagnosed
with cancer," he says in a
phone interview from the
office in Port Coquitlam.
After the young athletic
man was told he had
cancer, he didn't give up
his dreams, he just
changed them.
"He was the type of
person who gave 100 per
cent. He wasn't a quitter.
Morn recalls this better
than I do, but Terry
showed that right from
the start. When he was
five years old he would
set up blocks and he
wouldn't quit until they
were stacked.
"He Wai
involved In spc>ric
personally carried
VCl)
that
him
through. When he was
first diagnosed and tolJ
his leg was going to be
amputated, it wasn't
going to hold him down.
There was something very
positive about him."
Icily died on June
16, 1981. He never got to
finish his Marathon of
Hope; his run from the
Atlantic to the Pacific.
Cancer had spread from
his legs to his lungs.
Since then, Fctiy'a
example of courage has
inspired the world. That
is a lesson that Fred
learned years later when
he took over the job as
provincial diicvioi foi the
Terry Fox Run.
"'When i hi it v.amc
iiit*> the offi»..c Icny was
just my brother. I didn't
realize what he had done.
When I went to talk to
schools and people would
tell me stories - I thought,
'Holy, he really has had
an impact on people's
lives.'"
FALL SESSION REGISTRATION
at the Winter Sports Central Registration
SEPT. 2nd and 3rd - 6:00 - 8:00 pm
Twin Ice Arena
It doesn't surprise
him anymore.
But then again, he
says, it isn't just aboutTiis
brother anymore.
"When the run was
first started, it was in
memory of Terry. But so
many people have been
touched by cancer. Everyone
has their own personal
reason for keeping the
dream alive."
Dream is a bit deceiving
in this context because
some of them have come
true. The millions of dollars
that Canadians have
raised over the years for
cancer research have had
the effects Terry hoped
that it would.
"Childhood leukemia
is one example. In 1980 I
think children were being
told they had a 30 per
cent chance of surviving.
And now, so many dollars
are going to research, the
kids are being given 85 to
90 per cent. And Terry's
cancer - he was given less
than 50 per cent chance
and his leg was amputated.
Now people are given
85 per cent and they don't
have to have an amputation."
more than just a hangout
It also provides them valuable programs
ANYONE WHO
thinks the Quesnel Youth
Centre is just a place for
kids to hanig out is badly
mistaken says Quesnel
Youth coordinator Matt
Kolle.
Interviewed Thursday,
Kolle said the centre
has indeed served to provide
teens with a place
comfortable place to play
some pool, play ball
hockey or just hang out,
but it is more than that.
Much, much more.
"At the Youth Centre
we provide kids with an
opportunity to achieve
their goals," he said. "We
give them a place where
they can feel comfortable
and learn at the same
time. There is most definitely
a need for such a program,
and the kids are
responding."
Kolle said the centre
has the technology to help
teens make out resumes
right on site, and also
allows participants to
have a say in a niunber of
community projects, such
as the skateboard park.
They also provide
subjects, including basic
Teens Bobby Podger, Jay Podger and Mat Young work on
a "proposal" for Quesnel to increase tourism.
life skills and youth
employment.
"The life skills seminar
has a lot to do with
self-esteem," he said.
"We've got Bruce Landon
from Professional Counselling
Resources, as well
as Lana Best from the
Youth Centre working on
the two-day program."
After the first day of
lectures, Kolle said the
participants knuckled
down to actual problem
solving.
"We made a scenario
where we said the city
was willing to provide 50
per cent funding for a
new facility to encourage
tourism, and the participants
were competing to
give a proposal," he said.
Let's do it
for Terry!
AS WE prepare for the 1997 edition of the
Terry Fox run to raise money for cancer
research, we would do well to encourage as
many people as possible to take part.
After all, the millions and millions of dollars
raised to date have not been wasted. On
the contrary, they have been used to help create
some truly remarkable advances.
As recently as the early 1980s, children
with leukemia had, at best, a 30 per cent
chance of survival. Today, thanks to research,
they can look forward to an 85 per cent survival
rate. Similarly, bone cancer of the type
whieh felled Terry Fox no longer requires
amputation and the chances of survival have
increased from 50 per cent to 85 per cent.
With these very real and very striking
results in mind^ we urge Quesnel residents to
sign up for this year's event.
After all, the next life saved could be that
of someone you know.
Go back to
high school
WE'VE SAID It before and we have no
hesitation about saying it again. Go back to
school!
In today's increasingly competitive and
technological world, people with minimal
education are not just at a distinct disadvantage
in seeking good jobs and a good life - they
are pretty much destined to never get them.
Or, as we did, you
can choose to wing it and
just hope that everyone
gets home alive.
Sure, you can learn a
lot about yourself tooling
around the province in a
beat up old Ford pickup
with a massive, clunky
old camper perched precariously
on the back,
causing you tu sway and
lurch and hop all over the
road like a jackrabbit on
crack, while your wife
and young child, who are
jammed into the cramped
passenger compartment
with you, exchange wildeyed
looks of panic and
terror and make plans to
jump out of the vehicle at
the next slow curve.
Unfortunately, these
lessons are less an exercise
in personal discovery than
a descent into holiday
madness.
You may embark on
your holiday with the
goal of achieving temporary
peace and tranquillity,
but by the time you hit
the city limits, you have
cast this goal aside in
favour of an obsessive
pursuit of your next destination.
You have places
to be, and people to see,
and several hundred miles
of pavement in your way.
The asphalt is your
enemy, the highway is
yoiir nemesis; you are the
road warrior.
Eventually, the excursion
becomes an endless
track of divided roadway,
a swirling maelstrom of
traffic and road signs,
punctuated by a series of
frantic and hurried pit
stops that, in the beginning,
were the focal point
of your holiday plans. But
"The asphalt is your
enemy, the highway
is your nemesis; you
are the road warrior."
you are riojg^er interested
in^gj^ng tube, you are
obsessed with making
time.
No one is sure how
this happens. Nobody
deliberately sets out to
have the holiday from
hell. Your holiday schedule
always looks manageable
before you leave.
It will take on a life of its
own, growing and mutating,
until you discover
that you have somehow
agreed to visit every person
you ever met, including
some who are now
dead.
There are definite
advantages to this sociopathic
approach to holiday
planning. For one
thing, you start looking
forward to coming home.
By the time you finally
return, you will be ready
to swear off holidays permanently.
Because you are so
busy, you are also blissfully
unaware of how
your vacation is going
Later, when you get home
and have a close look at
the photos, you can make
an objective evaluation of
your holiday.
What I discovered i3
that, if I smile a certain
way, thc goofy way I
always smile when some
one points a camera at
me, I now have about 14
extra chins. We have
dozens of pictures, from
all ovef the province, on
the land and on the sea,
featuring me and my
extra chins, flapping in
the breeze. An enduring
and proud memory,
indeed.
If you really want to
elevate your holiday stress
level, you should also jam
a job interview in there
somewhere. Join me next
week for helpful tips on
the interview process,
including what to do
when you suffer a stressinduced
pulmonary
embolism in front of your
prospective employer.
(Hint: employers
appreciate' a worker who
knows how to deal with
emergencies. Learn how
to perform CPR on
yourself).
