COVER STORY
Florida’s newest
attraction:
Hyatt Coconut
Plantation
Experience the rejuvenating powers of nature
at an unspoiled oasis on the spectacular
Naples coast of Southwest Florida
n 1513, Spanish explorers
became the first Europeans
to “discover” Florida in their
search for the legendary Fountain
of Youth. Had they waded ashore
today, they might think they had
found exactly what they were
looking for at the new Hyatt Coconut
Plantation in Bonita Springs on
Florida’s spectacular Naples coast.
The astonishing splendor of
Hyatt Vacation Club’s newest resort
lends itself to the rejuvenating
powers of pampering indulgence.
Because the resort shares a
26-acre property with the adjacent
Hyatt Regency Coconut Point Resort
and Spa, guests are treated to a
marriage of classic Florida style and
luxurious resort amenities. Guests
can enjoy championship golf,
a lavish spa and fitness center,
fine dining, tennis and supervised
activities for kids at Camp Manatee.
It’s a vacation experience as
natural as the resort’s lush setting
in a secluded oasis on the Gulf of
Mexico’s pristine Estero Bay.
June 2003 marked the grand
opening of phase one of this
Southern plantation-style property.
Soon, the first 48 deluxe two-bedroom
condominiums will be privately
owned, including the amenities of
a private clubhouse with exercise
room, media room, arcade and
general store offering groceries
and sundries. And purchasing a
one-week vacation is the only way
to guarantee a coveted annual stay.
As an owner, how would you
spend your time here?
LAVISH CONDOS: Rich, dark
woods contrast beautifully with
pastel walls in the subtle colors
of nature, tropical artwork and
cheery fabrics at Hyatt Coconut
Plantation.
CHAMPIONSHIP GOLF COURSE
If you’re a golfer, you could
start by booking a tee time on the
signature, 18-hole Raymond Floyddesigned
Raptor Bay Golf Course.
The course, which surrounds
Coconut Plantation, is part of a
lush, protected habitat that is
home to uncounted migrating
birds and even rare, protected
species like the gopher tortoise,
bald eagle and whooping crane.
A stroll along the manicured
fairways takes visitors past nesting
areas of blue herons and great
white egrets. Small wonder the
course has been awarded
Audubon International’s coveted
Gold Certificate for its careful
management of the environment.
But the course is also a
championship facility, offering
challenges for golfers of all levels.
Unlike most Florida golf courses,
Floyd designed Raptor Bay with
no formal bunkers or roughs. He
used natural elevation changes,
native vegetation, mature trees
and grass evenly mowed to create
a unique experience where control
and placement are essential.
PAMPERING SPA
Visitors come to the pristine
shores of the Gulf of Mexico for the
renewing powers of
water, ocean breezes
and lush tropical splendor.
These same qualities
are found in rejuvenating
treatments at the
19,000-square-foot
Stillwater Spa, just off the lobby
of Hyatt Regency Coconut Point.
The European-style spa puts
particular emphasis on treatments
using marine elements, salts and
trace minerals taken from the ocean.
A full array of treatments, from
massages and facials, to hydrotherapy,
to aromatherapy, to body
scrubs and wraps are designed
to cleanse, detoxify and renew.
FINE AND CASUAL DINING
Also at the hotel are some of
the most innovative restaurants
southwest Florida has to offer.
Tanglewood, winner of the AAA
Four Diamond award, takes classic
American cuisine to new heights
under Chef Thomas Martin. Diners
enjoy tantalizing dishes like cast-iron
fillet of beef or Asian glazed wild
salmon at tables overlooking the
resort’s cascading waterfalls and pools.
There’s also the excitement of
Tarpon Bay, a casual, fun and
inventive seafood bistro under the
direction of award-winning Chef
John Suley. And perhaps the bestkept
secret at the resort is Braxton’s,
adjacent to Raptor Bay Golf
Course, serving the freshest
salads and sandwiches around.
Also at the hotel, guests can
enjoy cocktails at Mangroves
lobby lounge, frozen drinks and
burgers at Corkscrew by the
resort’s massive pool complex,
or Starbucks coffee and lighter
fare at Kofe Nut.
SUN & SAND
For sun-worshippers, Hyatt
Coconut Plantation is the place to be
with beautiful, landscaped adult and
children’s pools located just steps
from the vacation condominiums.
The marina at Hyatt Regency
Coconut Point also offers water taxi
ferries to the white, sandy beaches
of nearby Big Hickory Island. The
10-minute voyage, often accompanied
by playful dolphins in the
boat’s wake, offers opportunities to
spot Loggerhead turtles, an occasional
rare manatee, or spoonbills
and other wading waterfowl in this
protected marine habitat.
A short day trip takes sun-seekers
to the beaches, shopping and
excitement of nearby Fort Myers.
ECO TOURS
For insights into the ecology
and history of south Florida, take a
discovery tour of Estero Bay by boat.
Many tours stop at sites like Mound
Key State Park, a man-made island
created over 2,000 years ago by
the Calusa Indians. Accessible
only by boat, the island features
shell mounds rising over 32 feet
and is one of the foremost preserved
sites in the Calusa domain.
Matanzas Pass Preserve, near
Fort Myers, also offers a two-mile
boardwalk through a live hammock
and mangrove forest.
A RELAXING ESCAPE
After a day of exploration, relax
in your elegant vacation condo,
decorated in the lavish hues of the
Florida landscape. Rich, dark woods
contrast beautifully with pastel walls
in the subtle colors of nature,
tropical artwork and cheery fabrics.
Here, no detail has been overlooked.
Tropical print bedspreads
add casual charm, while rattan
side chairs and headboard inlays
evoke a Florida theme.
Deluxe in-room amenities
include everything from fully
equipped kitchens, to premium
furnishings, to an enclosed entertainment
center with television,
VCR, cable and pay-per-view
movies, CD player and more.
A focal point of each suite is
the in-room bath spa, featuring a
deep, coral tile-surround whirlpool
and walk-in shower.
Ownership entitles you to seven
nights in your stylish two-bedroom
unit. And, of course, it comes with
all the advantages of HVC membership,
including the option of
staying at many other HVC resorts
or the vast Interval International
network of resorts worldwide.
n Southwest Florida, U.S.
Step #1 Many members find that reserving
their unit and week of purchase becomes a
tradition. So each year they call during their
Home Resort Preference Period (HRPP) to let
us know they will be returning to their home
resort on their week of purchase. Remember,
while the HRPP window lets us hold your fixed
week exclusively for you, HVC does not make
the reservation for you. Your HRPP also
expires six months prior to your fixed week.
To make any other type of reservation,
you will be converting your fixed week to points.
In doing so, here are a few things to consider:
Step #2 When do you want to travel?
Consult the reservation calendars on each
side of these pages. One side reflects
Saturday arrivals, the other is for Sunday
arrivals. Be sure to confirm the day and date
of arrival for your selected week, because
each year the calendar varies by a few days.
Step #3 How many points are in your
account? As you pass through each
reservation window, a statement is mailed
explaining the reservation window and number
of points in your account. To determine
point values, locate the destination of
choice on the “Season Week” chart, look to
the week you intend to travel, then go to the
“Point Values” chart for the unit size. This will
tell you how many points are needed for a
It is never too soon to start planning your vacation. The points associated with your fixed week actually become available one year
prior to your fixed week. And the HVC reservation system is so flexible, that if you cannot make plans that far out, you still have several
options that allow you to reserve accommodations right up to the last minute.
can often make two or more reservations
from one allotment of points.
Options outside HVC Beyond HVC resorts,
Interval International is an option during your
HRPP or your Club Use Period. This allows
you to use all or any portion of points toward
exchanges at 1,900 Interval resorts worldwide.
Every day, Interval members exchange travel
weeks, which means availabilities change
daily. (Call 1-800-GO HYATT for updates.)
Unsure of your travel plans and considering
destinations outside HVC? You have the
option of utilizing the Extended External
Exchange Program (EEEP). Members may
commit all or any portion of their FIXED week
points to the EEEP for the purpose of exchange
through Interval International to non-HVC
Resorts for two years. Points must be converted
into the program 4 months before their deeded
week commences. Once the points are transferred
to the EEEP you cannot bring them
back to your HVC account. The EEEP does
not apply to floating points.
The Gold Passport Exchange Program
(GPEP) is another option during your Home
Resort Preference Period. This requires that
you move your entire point balance to the
GPEP. You can make as many reservations
or redeem as many Gold Passport Awards
as your points will allow.
HYATT WINDWARD POINTE RESORT
Surround yourself with wonder
Have fun in the sun–and the water–at this Key West paradise
t the end of Florida’s
dramatic Overseas
Highway is Key West
and the beginning of a vacation
filled with boundless
activities. Hyatt Windward
Tropical landscapes, elegantly
appointed suites and a sparkling
pool welcome guests to Hyatt
Windward Pointe, just a short
stroll from the southernmost
point in the continental U.S.
A WEEK
IN KEY WEST
DAY ONE
Relax in the pool. Nothing
releases stress better than floating
in a pool, yet feeling like you’re
drifting right out into the ocean.
That’s the illusion the negativeedge
design on the resort’s
90,000-gallon pool creates. Or
take a relaxing walk by the ocean.
At low tide, you can stroll out a
thousand yards from the resort
and still only be waist deep in
water. In the evening, take a taxi
to Hyatt Key West Resort &
Marina for a romantic Caribbean
dinner at Nicola’s Seafood. Dine
al fresco on the waterfront and
enjoy breathtaking views of a
starlit sky over the Gulf of Mexico.
DAY TWO
Relax on the beach. Pack up
the kids, sunscreen and camera
and stroll over to nearby
Smather’s Beach, the largest
beach on the island. This is the
“action beach” where young and
old come to enjoy the Atlantic
Ocean, socialize under shady
palm trees or nap in the sun. You
can rent everything you need,
from loungers and rafts, to sailboats
and wave runners. For early
evening entertainment, head over
to the nightly celebration on
Pointe Resort is the perfect
starting point for everything
under the sun.
Key West’s famed Mallory Square.
The whole family will enjoy jugglers,
palm readers, contortionists
and street performers, plus the
main event, a breathtaking sunset.
DAY THREE
Play on the water. If you dare,
try the hottest new water sport—
kite boarding. But start with lessons
to learn how to ride this
small board while holding onto a
parachute-like kite. Soon you’ll be
speedsailing, riding waves and
flying through the air for 10-feet or
more. While you’re in a sporting
mood, head back to the resort for
a pickup game of beach volleyball,
badminton or shuffleboard.
Or try a friendly game of pool in
The Beatle’s Hut (a.k.a. The Pool
House). Hyatt Windward Pointe
kept this part of the original building
intact to commemorate a
Beatle’s stay while visiting Key
West. All the makings of a great
barbecue are waiting for you
there as well.
The waters surrounding the
island are warmed by the Gulf
Stream, which protects the only
DAY FOUR
Be a tourist. Everyone goes to
Duval Street, offering an amazing
array of dining options from
French, Italian and Caribbean
cuisines to pizza by the slice. The
shopping is just as eclectic with
T-shirts, souvenirs and fine crystal
on display in fun and funky storefronts.
Learn about important historical
figures who called Key West
home with a visit to the Truman
White House-Key West, or a tour of
the Ernest Hemingway Home and
Museum. See the garret over his
garage, where he wrote For Whom
the Bell Tolls and A Farewell to Arms.
The Heritage House Museum and
Robert Frost Cottage also offer
antiques and gardens where
visitors can enjoy recordings of
Robert Frost’s poetry.
DAY FIVE
Enjoy the wildlife. Start your
day with breakfast at Blue Heaven,
729 Thomas St., one of the most
casual restaurants anywhere.
Try “Breakfast with the Roosters”
coral reef in America and
keeps the climate warm all year
round. “Water is king here,”
says Ted Bolstad, resort manager.
“All HVC members thoroughly
enjoy the diverse water
activities.”
Reserving a week at Hyatt
Windward Pointe Resort also
gives you access to Hyatt Key
for banana, pecan or strawberry
pancakes with pure maple syrup
and discover a Key West tradition
as live roosters and chicks play
underfoot. Then head to Key West’s
Historic Seaport for a kayak or Jet
Ski rental. Or explore the island’s
famed coral reefs and protected
habitats as part of a snorkeling,
eco-tour or birding adventure.
DAY SIX
Make memories. Take the
family on day trip to Fort Jefferson
in Dry Tortugas National Park.
This Civil War-era fortress is the
perfect setting for history, snorkeling,
camping, bird watching and
more. Arrive by seaplane to see
dolphins, sharks, spotted rays
and tarpon, or even shipwrecks
and coral reefs from above. On
land, you can splash around in
the moat surrounding the fort.
This calm and protected area is
ideal for swimming, snorkeling,
reef diving and exploring colorful
sea life. Everyone will come back
from this trip with stories to tell.
West Resort & Marina, ideally
located in Old Town Key West.
“HVC members feel at home there
and enjoy renting wave runners,
bicycles or fishing equipment from
a name they trust,” Bolstad says.
With near perfect weather yearround,
inviting waters and friendly
people, anytime is a great time to
schedule a trip to Key West.
DAY SEVEN
Reel in fun. With over 60 deepsea
charter boats plying the waters
around Key West, there is a fishing
trip for every type of angler.
Experienced anglers could reel in a
white marlin, sailfish, wahoo, blackfin
tuna, kingfish, barracuda or monster
shark. But even a small bonefish can
provide a good fight for a novice
fishermen. Even if you didn’t catch
anything, you can still enjoy superb
seafood at one of Old Town Key
West’s classic eateries, Café
Marquesa in the Marquesa Hotel,
600 Fleming Street. The 50-seat
restaurant, serving fine seafood and
cuisine, has a theatre-kitchen set
behind a trompe l’oeil wall of a
kitchen scene.
There are so many activities to
do in Key West that a week is barely
enough time to fit it all in. But no
matter how you spend your week, you’ll
see why Key West is a destination
you’ll want to enjoy year after year.
Like its name suggests, Hacienda del Mar
is everything you might expect of a beach
Dorado Beach, the resort
also boasts the world’s largest river
Now it has even more to boast
about: Denise Otero, the petite and
always smiling agent at Hacienda
Nominated by owners who know
“I know what the owners like and what they don’t
OWNER SPOTLIGHT
HVC flexibility lets the family come along
ra and Fran Bash are no strangers to Puerto
Rico. As 15-year veteran guests of Hyatt
resorts on the island, they jumped at the
opportunity to become owners at Hyatt Hacienda
del Mar even before it opened, knowing that
the flexibility offered by Hyatt Vacation Club
and Hyatt’s hallmark service would perfectly
accommodate their annual
Christmastime family reunion.
With four sons and daughters-in-law,
plus lots of grandchildren, the Bashes’
extended family can take up quite a
bit of space. They knew HVC would
be a great way for the family to be
together without having to book a
whole wing of hotel rooms for the
entire Bash Bunch, says Fran Bash.
The Bashes purchased three
weeks at Hacienda del Mar, but
because of the flexibility of HVC’s
points system, they have developed
a unique way to allocate their vacation
time. “We double up on our
accommodations for Christmas week by trading
our New Year’s week, and then get a week in the
spring sometime, usually April,” says Fran Bash.
While the Christmas week at Hacienda del Mar
has become an etched-in-stone family tradition,
the ability to trade points for stays has at other select
Hyatt properties also has paid off for the Bashes.
One year, they were able to trade their fixed week
in the spring into The Hotel Exchange Program for
a vacation for their sons. “The boys went out to
California,” Fran Bash says. “They used our points
to stay at the Hyatt Regency Palm Springs.”
The idea of always having a set place for their
family reunion was the key reason the Bashes
chose to buy into HVC’s Hacienda del Mar.
And their 15 years of memorable experiences
at Hyatt resorts in Puerto Rico made their decision
even easier. “We bought our unit from looking
at a picture, and we love it,” Fran Bash says.
“It’s our home away from home.”
TOGETHER AGAIN: The Bash family Christmastime
reunion at Hyatt Hacienda del Mar has become a tradition.
In addition to HVC’s flexibility, the Bashes love
the staff at Hacienda del Mar, who know the
entire family by name, even their sons, and are
always ready to offer their aid and expertise.
“They are just forever present, willing to help,”
says Fran Bash. “It’s constant luxury, but with
the ambiance of family.”
While they enjoy spending time with their
family at HVC, the Bashes also have built strong
relationships with fellow owners. “We’ve made
friends who we call family as much as our own
family,” she says. “It’s warm and friendly, and
everyone knows everyone else.”
