Welcome<br />

Each Each <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Wrexham</strong>’s W parks is unique<br />

<strong>Wrexham</strong>’s parks have something for everyone to enjoy.<br />

Five <strong>of</strong> the parks have the prestigious Green Flag Award for excellence<br />

as public green spaces. The parks <strong>of</strong>fer tranquil woodl<strong>and</strong>,<br />

grassl<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> riverside walks set within a variety <strong>of</strong> beautiful<br />

scenery <strong>and</strong> some have an historical past.<br />

Families with children can use exciting playgrounds, BMX tracks, trim<br />

trails <strong>and</strong> tennis <strong>and</strong> basketball courts. Watch bowling or relax with a<br />

picnic near the river or meet the farm animals at Ty Mawr.<br />

Throughout the year, including school holidays, visitors can take part in<br />

exciting arts <strong>and</strong> craft workshops, sports activities, practical volunteer<br />

days <strong>and</strong> guided walks.<br />

The National Curriculum <strong>and</strong><br />

The rangers run an exciting outdoor education programme<br />

especially for schools. These are linked to the National<br />

Curriculum <strong>and</strong> The Foundation Phase in Wales.<br />

Outdoor learning subjects include:<br />

Habitats, river studies, river/pond dipping, river geography, orienteering,<br />

mapping, seasonal walks, language & literacy, rocks & fossils,<br />

environmental art, forest school <strong>and</strong> farm walks at Ty Mawr.<br />

Nant Nant Mill Mill, Ty Mawr <strong>and</strong> Alyn Waters<br />

have a perfect solution<br />

for your conference, meeting<br />

<strong>and</strong> training needs<br />

The Environmental Education rooms at Alyn Waters Nant Mill <strong>and</strong><br />

Ty Mawr are ideal for meetings, training, conferences, DIY school<br />

groups <strong>and</strong> children’s events including birthday parties.<br />

The room at Alyn Waters is large, catering for up to 100 people <strong>and</strong> is<br />

ideal for conferences <strong>and</strong> training. It has the benefit <strong>of</strong> large windows<br />

providing natural light <strong>and</strong> glass doors which open out directly<br />

into the country park.<br />

The room at Nant Mill is next to the river Clywedog. <strong>and</strong> surrounded<br />

by beautiful ancient woodl<strong>and</strong>. Catering for smaller groups <strong>of</strong> up to<br />

30 people, it has an adjoining kitchen <strong>and</strong> grassed area with picnic<br />

benches outside.<br />

The new room at Ty Mawr <strong>of</strong>fers an excellent facility for up to 50 people<br />

set within the beautiful Vale <strong>of</strong> Llangollen near the river Dee with the<br />

added attraction <strong>of</strong> the working farm <strong>and</strong> animals nearby.<br />

All centres have car parking facilities, Visitor Centres, toilets <strong>and</strong> good<br />

disabled access <strong>and</strong> toilets.<br />

Alyn Waters is the largest Country Park in <strong>Wrexham</strong> <strong>and</strong> lies on both<br />

sides <strong>of</strong> the River Alyn. If you enjoy walking you can explore the<br />

extensive woodl<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> grassl<strong>and</strong> areas <strong>and</strong> follow the river paths.<br />

Some walks are calorie mapped <strong>and</strong> there’s a purpose built cycleway<br />

ideal for an afternoon with the family. Use the Trim Trail if you are trying to<br />

get fit or follow an exciting sculpture trail around an easy route<br />

The Environmental Education room can be hired for training, meetings,<br />

parties <strong>and</strong> community groups with the added advantage <strong>of</strong> the Country<br />

Café in the adjacent room. The Llay side <strong>of</strong> the park has a Local Nature<br />

Reserve, an excellent playground <strong>and</strong> Golf Driving Range. Fishing at Alyn<br />

Waters is by permit only. For fishing day tickets: Deggys, 2 Ruabon Rd,<br />

Pen y Bryn, <strong>Wrexham</strong>.<br />

Bellevue<br />

Bellevue is a lovely Edwardian style park in a central location near<br />

to <strong>Wrexham</strong>’s town centre. Visitors can Explore the park <strong>and</strong> see<br />

impressive mature trees, ornamental shrubs, attractive flowerbeds <strong>and</strong> a<br />

b<strong>and</strong>st<strong>and</strong>, where free summer concerts take place<br />

The park has a variety <strong>of</strong> excellent sports facilities which are free to use<br />

but there is no equipment available for hire.<br />

Parciau bowling club do hire out bowls in the season from April to<br />

September <strong>and</strong> the tennis courts are also available during these months.<br />

The park has some measured walks, jogging routes, a fitness trail,<br />

basketball courts, toddler <strong>and</strong> junior playgrounds <strong>and</strong> a football pitch.<br />

Bellevue is 1/4 <strong>of</strong> a mile from <strong>Wrexham</strong> Town Centre, <strong>of</strong>f the<br />

roundabout at Bradley Road, Ruthin Road <strong>and</strong> Bellevue Road.<br />

Ty Mawr has a farm setting near the Cefn Viaduct <strong>and</strong> river Dee where<br />

visitors can feed some <strong>of</strong> the smaller animals <strong>and</strong> watch others in the<br />

wildflower meadows. Visitors enjoy the circular walk around the park<br />

or longer walks including The Cefn Heritage Trail, part <strong>of</strong> Offa’s Dyke<br />

Trail <strong>and</strong> the Llangollen Canal walk from the World Heritage Pontcysyllte<br />

Aqueduct. There is also a circular canal walk.<br />

The Visitor Centre <strong>and</strong> picnic area have impressive wooden sculptures<br />

<strong>and</strong> children can use the trim trail, BMX track <strong>and</strong> new playground. The<br />

Environmental Education room is a base for events <strong>and</strong> education <strong>and</strong><br />

can be hired for training, meetings, birthday parties <strong>and</strong> community<br />

groups. Children over 8 can join the Junior Rangers. Application forms<br />

from the park. If you’re interested in sponsoring an animal please ring<br />

the park for details.<br />

Nant Mill<br />

The park nestles between two beautiful ancient woodl<strong>and</strong>s beside the<br />

River Clywedog. The popular Clywedog Trail, from Minera to King’s Mill,<br />

passes through the park <strong>and</strong> Offa’s Dyke is nearby.<br />

Children can enjoy the playground, mole tunnel, giant pigs, bird thrones,<br />

wildlife garden with giant insect benches <strong>and</strong> watch the wildlife from the<br />

bird hide. The Environmental Education room is a base for events <strong>and</strong><br />

education <strong>and</strong> can be hired for training, meetings, birthday parties <strong>and</strong> a<br />

variety <strong>of</strong> community groups.<br />

Why not hire the ducks for your own duck race, which is a great way to<br />

raise funds for your charity or school.<br />

Ponciau Banks<br />

Ponciau Banks is an urban park nestling in the centre <strong>of</strong> the village <strong>of</strong><br />

Rhosllanerchrugog . The park was first built in the 1930’s <strong>and</strong> is now<br />

restored, using Heritage Lottery funding.<br />

It has attractive flower beds, an open l<strong>and</strong>scape with hilltop views,<br />

improved access <strong>and</strong> a variety <strong>of</strong> excellent sports facilities including:<br />

crown green bowling, BMX track <strong>and</strong> tennis courts. The park is an oasis<br />

<strong>of</strong> green within the largest village in Wales.<br />

The park is in Rhos. Buses: 3 Arriva. Turn <strong>of</strong>f A483 along B5605 to<br />

Rhos. Turn right at traffic lights, up Gutter Hill / Hill St, right at Queen St<br />

by garage into Broad St. Right at New St, right into Baptist St. Parking is<br />

situated at the top <strong>of</strong> the Park <strong>of</strong>f Baptist St/South Lane.<br />

Acton<br />

This urban park was laid out in 1785 as part <strong>of</strong> Acton Hall <strong>and</strong> is now<br />

a green space surrounded by houses. Much <strong>of</strong> the parkl<strong>and</strong> remains<br />

the same with mature trees, expanses <strong>of</strong> grassl<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> a large lake<br />

containing water fowl.<br />

Free facilities include toddler <strong>and</strong> junior playgrounds, tennis courts <strong>and</strong> a<br />

bowling green.<br />

There is limited car parking <strong>of</strong>f Herbert Jennings Ave <strong>and</strong> you can also<br />

park behind the Cunliffe Arms.<br />

The park is 3/4 mile from <strong>Wrexham</strong>. Town Centre along Chester Rd<br />

Buses: 35, 39 D. Jones. Turn right at 1st roundabout to Rhosnesni Lne.<br />

Turn left at 2nd roundabout onto Borras Rd then 1st left onto Herbert<br />

Jennings Ave. The park is 400 yds on right.<br />

Stryt Las<br />

Stryt Las Park is home to a colony <strong>of</strong> Great Crested Newts, which are an<br />

endangered species, therefore the lake is a designated Site <strong>of</strong> Special<br />

Scientific Interest. The park comprises <strong>of</strong> mostly wetl<strong>and</strong> dominated by a<br />

large lake <strong>and</strong> three smaller ponds.<br />

There are easy access paths surrounding the lake where a variety <strong>of</strong> water<br />

fowl can be observed.<br />

Visitors can take a leisurely walk around the lake or just relax on a bench<br />

<strong>and</strong> watch the swans <strong>and</strong> ducks whilst enjoying a picnic.<br />

Stryt Las is in Johnstown. Buses: X5, 555 GHA, 2a, 2c, 94 Arriva, 2v Vale <strong>of</strong><br />

Llangollen. Take Plassey turn <strong>of</strong>f the A483 towards Johnstown on Bangor<br />

Rd. Turn left at lights <strong>and</strong> immediately right, Stryt Las is on Park Road.<br />

The area known as Bonc yr Hafod was once Hafod Colliery spoilheap<br />

<strong>and</strong> is now the largest community woodl<strong>and</strong> in North East Wales. The<br />

park covers nearly 90 acres with circular paths leading to the top <strong>of</strong> a<br />

hill where the impressive ‘Time Shadow’ sculpture st<strong>and</strong>s. There are<br />

spectacular views <strong>of</strong> the surrounding countryside from the top <strong>of</strong> this hill<br />

<strong>and</strong> visitors can see for miles.<br />

It is a designated Site <strong>of</strong> Special Scientific Interest as the endangered<br />

Greater Crested Newts live here as well as Skylarks who have found a<br />

perfect home at Hafod.<br />

Hafod is near Johnstown. Buses: X5, 555 GHA, 2a, 2c, 94 Arriva,<br />

2v Vale <strong>of</strong> Llangollen. Take Plassey turn <strong>of</strong>f the A483 towards Johnstown.<br />

Turn right for ‘Dennis’ <strong>of</strong> Ruabon’. The car park is further along on the left.<br />

Minera Lead Mines<br />

Minera Country Park lies next to the fascinating old lead mines <strong>and</strong> gives<br />

a fascinating glimpse into the important industrial past <strong>of</strong> the Clywedog<br />

Valley. It is at the head <strong>of</strong> a valley which was a hive <strong>of</strong> industry during the<br />

Industrial Revolution <strong>and</strong> part <strong>of</strong> the local heritage which included coal<br />

mining, limestone quarries, iron works <strong>and</strong> lead mining.<br />

It is a good starting point to walk the entire Clywedog Trail down<br />

to Kingsmill along the river Clywedog. Visitors can explore the wild<br />

countryside surrounding Minera Mountain, take a walk along the old,<br />

disused railway line to Minera village or just enjoy a picnic looking over to<br />

the village <strong>of</strong> Coedpoeth.<br />

Moss Valley park lies between the villages <strong>of</strong> Gwersyllt <strong>and</strong> Brynteg <strong>and</strong><br />

is 3 miles north <strong>of</strong> <strong>Wrexham</strong>.<br />

It comprises <strong>of</strong> woodl<strong>and</strong>, two small lakes <strong>and</strong> areas <strong>of</strong> open grassl<strong>and</strong>.<br />

With an industrial past in coal mining, the old railway lines can still be<br />

seen. The park was reclaimed in 1973, <strong>and</strong> is a rich habitat for wildlife.<br />

Visitors can enjoy energetic woodl<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> lakeside walks or use the<br />

cycle paths.<br />

Fishing in the lake is by permit only<br />

For fishing day tickets: Deggys, 2 Ruabon Rd, Pen y Bryn, <strong>Wrexham</strong>.<br />

Buses: 17, 23 GHA or 20, 21 Arriva. Leave the A483 at Mold turning. At<br />

the roundabout take Summerhill Rd, follow signs to Moss Valley Golf<br />

Course, third left into Poolmouth Rd. Car park between the lakes.<br />

Bryn Kinalt<br />

Bryn Kinalt park is situated on a former colliery site near Chirk Fire Station.<br />

Visitors can see some <strong>of</strong> the mining heritage in the form <strong>of</strong> an old coal<br />

truck <strong>and</strong> drill machinery. The park boasts fantastic views over Chirk, the<br />

Welsh hills <strong>and</strong> the Shropshire plains.<br />

It has wooded areas <strong>and</strong> surfaced paths running through impressive<br />

meadows with an abundance <strong>of</strong> native wildflowers. The wooden Trim Trail<br />

was donated by Cadburys.<br />

Buses: 2,2a, Arriva. Follow signs <strong>of</strong>f the A483 towards Chirk. Turn up<br />

Colliery Rd in the centre <strong>of</strong> Chirk to the small car park & access is to the left<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Fire Station.<br />
