-2009 GE China Leadership
Meeting Held in Shanghai
On the annual China Leadership Meeting held on February 18 th,
more than 200 Greater China business leaders gathered in
Shanghai, looking back on 2008 achievements and discussing
about GE’s challenges and opportunities in 2009. John Rice, Vice
Chairman, President & CEO of GE Infrastructure, Nani Beccalli,
President & CEO of GE International, Karan Bhatia, Vice President,
International Government Relations & Policy, Steve Fludder, Vice
President, Ecomagination, and Mark Norbom, CEO and President
of GE China attended the meeting, delivered speeches, and
joined the panel discussions.
2008 has been a good year for GE in China despite of the
financial crisis. Including the capital businesses, GE in China grew
11 percent with total revenue of USD 4.64 billion. GE’s infrastruc-
ture businesses achieved a growth of 31 percent year-on-year
with total revenue of USD 3.3 billion by securing major deals
while building stronger partnerships with governments, and
customers in China. As a worldwide Olympic partner, GE and
NBC achieved total revenue of USD 1.7 billion in advertising, and
infrastructure sales. We were an important part of the Beijing
Olympics, hence, GE enjoys a well-recognized, and respected
brand.
With the global recession, China is the silver lining for GE. “This is
not the first time GE has experienced a down cycle in its
130-year history. GE won’t be so successful without always
keeping an eye on the big picture, and keeping the company
safe,” said Mark Norbom, CEO and President of GE China. “In
China, GE has built a solid foundation, which the company can
now leverage, and grow from. We will work through the tough
times. All we need to do is execute!”
To achieve significant competitive advantage in technology and
innovation, and areas where continued strong growth can still be
found, the current successful industrial model should be
sustained, and at the same time, the focus on key initiatives
should be continued. Hence, GE will continue to build on the
success in ecomagination, the revenue of which grew from USD
446 million in 2007 to USD 797 million in 2008, led by the strong
growth of Aviation, Energy, Transportation, and Water.
Since working with the governments is critical to GE’s business
success in China, to view the government as a partner, and as
GE’s most important customer is the key strategy, and also the
main topic discussed at the meeting.
On the evening of February 17 th, 10 China Leadership Awards
were also presented at China Leadership Meeting Welcome
especially under the influence of financial crisis, “First of all, apart
from the technical expertise, our team works very closely to the
11 LIFE at GE
Stories of Dan Zhang and Hao Zhang
The famous German poet Goethe has referred to figure skating
as “poetry in motion” -that skaters should be poets on the ice.
Figure skating is a combination of grace, strength, and skill,
where perfection is the ultimate goal. When a performance
comes to an end, we expect not only to be honored, but to be
compared to that of legends.
I’m going to share with you the story of our journey and growth
together.
Descendants of Dragon
February 14th, 2006: Torino Palavela Stadium. We were just at
the 38th second in our performance “Descendants of Dragon” at
the 2006 Olympic Winter Games. I flung Dan Zhang high skyward
for our first throw, expecting her to land gracefully like a swallow
as she always did. Within a second, I saw her land with her legs
turned outward, her left knee hitting the ice. At that moment, my
mind went completely blank. She struggled to her feet, but I was
not sure if she could continue.
With the atmosphere in the arena tense due to the fall, we had
just a split second to make a decision whether or not to continue.
With great strength, Dan Zhang decided to push forward, and
finish out our performance. Undoubtedly, it was her mind, not
her body that made this decision.
Turning around to the place where she had fallen, the crowd
erupted into applause as the music sounded again. We skated
on, becoming lost in the music, and our performance. We had to
forget what had just happened, and push forward. I acted as if I
were on a battlefield. Since this routine was rather difficult, I felt
so exhausted that I was not sure I could make the last lift. My
delicate, yet strong-minded partner gave me the strength to
complete it. As we left the ice, doctors tended to Dan Zhang.
Applause sounded once more. With that performance we
harvested not only a historic silver medal, but also maturity.
Physical pains
The season after the 2006 Torino Olympic Winter Games was a
lot of painful memory. Dan Zhang had not been able to recover
to top form due to her injuries, and we had a number of disap-
pointments at key competitions. At the Championships in March
2006, we came out first in the short programs, yet a miss in the
free skating program prevented us from reaching the crown. At
the 2007 Championships, we did not even find ourselves in the
top three due to our poor performance in the short program.
Our worst memory was at the Russia Figure Skating Grand Prix
Final in December 2006. As soon as our performance ended, Dan
Zhang was taken to the hospital and was diagnosed with
exhaustion. Once back in China, her symptoms seemed to get
worse. She had irregular heartbeat, and needed immediate
medical treatment, and was told that she must take some time
to rest. She was unable to participate in any intense exercise, so
we were not able to attend the 2007 Asia Winter Games.
Injuries are the cost every world champion must pay as part of
the growing process. An injury to an athlete is what economic
crisis is to a nation. Optimism and clear thinking are the only
ways to overcome difficulties. During those painful days, we
never lost our desire to become champions. The experience in
Torino showed us the importance of telling ourselves that no
matter what happened, we dig deep and through that, we
became even more aware of the strength we possess. Through
our rest period, we were able to reflect on our challenges and we
came to realize our sincere love of the sport of figure skating.
Flying with the wings of music
In 2008, we won a silver medal in the Championships for our
performance, “Fairy”. As world champions, we are constantly
looking for unique skills which make our routines difficult, while
also integrating Chinese thematics into our performances. After
the unforgettable memories in 2006 and 2007, we have both
grown through our experiences. Now, with the Vancouver 2010
Olympic Winter Games around the corner, we find ourselves
dedicated and confident, but also with an overwhelming sense
of calm. Perhaps this is what a champion should have? The song
“Flying with the wings of music” goes with our latest short program.
With this routine we earned the gold medal at the 2008 Cup of
China and silver at the 2009 World Championships. I hope we
can display our confidence and grace in Vancouver and complete
another important journey in our lives with the wings of music.
Bo Liu: President of GE Oil & Gas,
Greater China
Wei Shen: Director of GE China Strategic
Planning and Marketing, and General
Manager of Yangtze Delta Region
Weijia Qian: General
Manager of Medical
Diagnostics, GE
Healthcare China
Q: What advice you'd be giving to the mentees regarding how to leverage
the program to develop themselves?
Q: Could you share with us an unforgettable mentoring experience?
Weiming Xiang: Once a mentee was responsible to organize an important global meeting. She spent much time on
preparing, but failed to control the discussion time of attendees, which made the meeting prolonged. She
was very depressed and called me. I told her that she covered all the information needed, so she didn’t
have to blame herself. Then I shared my own experience with her to help her improve. Afterwards, she
told me that our conversation was very meaningful to her.
Wei Shen: It impressed me a lot when some leadership program trainees consulted with me about choosing their
rotations. They attached much importance to every assignment, which I can understand well, since I
also used to be a trainee of IMLP. I gave them some suggestions according to my own experience, which
helped them realize their needs and choose the most appropriate rotation.
Weijia Qian: Mentees should take initiative to consult with mentors. If mentors' schedules are full, they can meet
another time. There's no need for mentees to worry about mentors' busy schedules for anyone who
choose to become a mentor is willing to share.
Xin Xu: Mentees should do some preparation before talking to their mentors. And they should
leverage the limited time to talk about constructive issues. As
for employees without a mentor, they should learn to raise
their hands and ask for help, and find some go-to persons in
the company. As for new employees, they can go to
their line manager or HR manager to ask for a
mentor, who can help them adapt to the new
environment quickly.
Q: Could you share some experience with other mentors to
enhance the efficiency of mentoring?
Xin Xu: Mentors can take initiative to invite mentees when their schedule is not so full. They can offer
practical advice through similar case story telling. It is more important to help them learn to
make right decisions.
Weiming Xiang: Mentors should build mutual trust with mentees through various ways of interactions, such as
experience sharing, group dinner, outing, sports, etc. Also, mentors should do some necessary
preparation before mentoring. They ought to be a good listener to understand mentees’
needs.
Bo Liu: I will often pick up a topic before mentoring. I teach them to solve problems in diversified
ways, and analyze which is the best solution through case study. Mentors should selflessly
share with mentees their experience. They should summarize the frequently asked questions
and answers in business review meeting, in order to leverage them in mentoring. Mentors
don’t have to be better than mentees in all aspects, so they should be objective when talking
to mentees.
Weijia Qian: Mentors should be honest when talking with mentees about their career development. They
should be patient when listening to mentees, and help them to analyze issues from different
aspects.
Mentees have benefited a lot from GE China Mentoring Program, following are their views about the program:
A mentee in Chengdu: Through GE China Mentoring Program, we can communicate with people from different
businesses, and get to know the company developments. The mentors pay much attention to mentees’ development,
and have taken initiative to organize many group activities. The mentors are very experienced in their business, and
have given mentees very useful suggestions.
A mentee in Shanghai: GE China Mentoring Program is a systematic program, which offers adequate knowledge and
direction for building the Mentoring Mechanism. I would like to thank GE China HR Team, who offered us such an
excellent platform, and I am also thankful for the selfless mentors, who keep sharing their precious experience with us.
This year, GE China Mentoring Program will organize more training, and sharing activities, to achieve better performance.
A: I started as an online learning specialist without any
Chief Learning Officer, Asia Pacific (former CLO, China), said
to me, “Belle, I don’t want to see you sitting behind the
Trainer class, but the evaluation was bad. However, he
didn’t lose his faith in me. Instead, he offered to co-teach
with me. I saw clearly that how trust can help a person
grow. When GE sees the potential in people, GE gives them
the opportunity to grow.
Q: What is your biggest strength as a trainer/facilitator?
A: The capability to identify people’s needs, and effectively
communicate the messages. By effectiveness, I mean, as a
facilitator, I need to give simple messages, and communicate
with an open heart, and genuineness. When people
fully understand your points, they accept more, and the
learning experience is enhanced. It’s more about communicating
A Useful Training Class for
Legal Interns
GE China started its Legal Intern Program from March 2004.
The program provided interns with comprehensive trainings
on career development and working skills. By February 2009,
more than 80 interns have worked in Legal Department of GE
China.
On October 15 th, 2008, GE China held another training class for
legal interns in GE China Technology Park. The training class
beginning at 4 p.m. was organized and hosted by Jianmei Feng,
Public Policy Senior Counsel of GE China. All lecturers were
leaders from different departments, including Steve Maloy,
General Counsel for Asia Pacific Region, Geoff Li, Public Relations
Director of GE China, Wei Shen, Director of GE China Strategic
Planning and Marketing, and General Manager of Yangtze-Delta
Region, George Lee, Compliance Manager of GE Capital
Commercial Finance, and Angell Xi, Legal Counsel of GE Fanuc.
Steve Maloy first gave an interesting introduction to a book The
Geography of Thought, which helped the interns to better
understand the culture differences between China and other
western countries, and how this results in different thinking.
Followed was Wei Shen, who gave a brief overview of GE, its
business scope, and its Olympic projects. While having a better
knowledge of GE, the interns also gained a perceptual understanding
about how a multinational company can be localized,
and how it serves Chinese market with its unique offerings.
Geoff Li discussed GE’s brand strategy, and ecomagination
initiative. GE is always devoted into researching, and developing
environmental friendly products, and pays close attention to
corporate social responsibility, and environmental protection. GE
ecomagination products, and technologies left a deep impression
on the interns.
Compliance is the core of GE culture. Many interns were very
curious about how compliance, as an abstract concept, could be
practiced in employees’ daily work and thinking. George Lee then
provided explanation using some real cases, which helped the
interns to better understand GE’s compliance.
Finally, Angell Xi gave a lesson on how to handle legal affairs in
GE. She compared vividly the legal affairs to the anti-virus
software - though the content varies, the purpose is always to
solve the legal problems in a company, and safeguard the
company’s operation. The legal counsel should have not only
professional legal knowledge, but also good understanding of
the company’s businesses, and be good at communicating.
Meanwhile, she also shared some working skills, from which the
interns benefited a lot.
In this training class, GE China also invited some former legal
interns, who are now working in government sectors, and law
firms, to share their work experience with the new interns. At
last, the new interns shared their views on working skills, and
career development with the speakers, and former interns. The
training finished at 9:30 p.m. with great success.
The interns expressed that the training session was very
comprehensive, practical, and useful. They learnt practical
working skills, and gained a comprehensive knowledge of GE;
meanwhile, the training also provided a good platform for the
new interns, and former interns to network with each other.
Values Are the Cornerstones of Sound
Leadership
What is leadership? Recently, modern management expert, Peter Drucker said he believes the
core principle of leadership is the art of how one behaves; instead of how one gets things done. As
results, the ultimate factor that determines a person’s leadership capability is the individual’s
character, and personality.
What is GE’s Leadership? GE’s Chairman and CEO Jeff Immelt said: “Leadership is a journey… It is a
process of self-awareness, and self-renewal.”
Self-awareness is the core to leadership development. Over the
past few years, the most difficult question for GE colleagues to
answer is “Who are you?”
A: “I am XX.” (that’s just a name)
B: “I am XXX manager from GE XX business” (that’s just a title)
C: “I am married with one daughter.” (that’s just your personal
status)
Our personal values define who we are. Our values are the
principles we follow in our daily activities. They are reflected
everywhere in our behaviors, our thoughts, and ultimately our
decisions.
The Chinese idiom “Mencius’ mother moving three times” talks
about Mencius’ mother who moved their home three times, just
to choose the best environment for Mencius’ education. This is
an excellent example of how values can guide people’s behaviors.
Another Chinese idiom “To repay injustice with justice” describes
how a person’s values guide his/her situational behaviors.
Family, school, work place, society, and the people around us all
play a key role in building our value system. So does the political,
and social environment we live in. Meanwhile, our values will also
change at different stages of our life.
GE’s values have evolved into today’s “Growth Values” after over
a hundred years. In GE’s recent focus group discussions on
Growth Values with mid level managers in several business
groups, two questions were asked:
1. How would you rank GE’s five Growth Values (External Focus,
Clear Thinking, Inclusiveness, Imagination, and Expertise)
based on the efforts needed for Chinese leadership talents to
acquire them?
2. Can you please explain how our traditional culture, education
system, legal system, and our economic development
impacted our values?
Over 60% of the respondents have put Imagination, and
Inclusiveness as the two most challenging Growth Values for
Chinese in general.
This discussion helps us realize that our tradition, and culture
have given us a structured, authoritative, and passive learning
environment. We grew up in a system that imposed the
management of centralization, and reinforced many traditional
views such as:
“telling only 70% of what you’re thinking”
“the gun always targets at the first bird landing on the tree”
This means we were discouraged from being courageous, from
confidently taking risks, from communicating with others in a
frank, and straightforward way, extending our reach to people
who are not in our inner circle, and encouraging other’s progress.
Based on the learning in building GE’s Growth Values in GE China,
the company has taken many actions over the past few years.
We are helping to build individual tailormade career development
plans for our leadership talents, based on their individual
leadership assessments. We have provided feedback on
behavioral changes, and we have increased, and strengthened
coaching, and mentoring.
It is also found that common behavioral development needs for
most of the leadership talents in GE China are:
1. Influencing skills in the global context.
2. Building capacity for motivating and inspiring different people.
3. Challenge current reality, and make the tough decisions.
4. Executive Presence.
Also, GE has held many leadership development programs in
China and throughout Asia; such as Asia EB Orientation, China EB
Summit, China Executive Acceleration Program, China SPB
Orientation, Asia Talent Forum, and Asia Female Talent Forum
etc. In these programs, the company took on many new, and
explorative approaches towards building GE’s Growth Values,
and strengthening leadership behaviors, and we received a lot of
positive feedback along the way.
One manager shared his learning with us,
“I was recently assigned to lead a new role, and a new team. I
got more than 20 direct reports, and need to clean up many
things. I couldn’t see the end, even though I have given all my
time, and many efforts to do it. Through this learning, I suddenly
realized it was me who need to come up with a new solution to
do this job. But, I actually have been mentally blaming my team
instead, assuming they should have perceived my thoughts from
my behaviors even though I didn’t say it directly (to them).“
Another manager said:
“Actually we do have many new ideas. But we will not speak up
directly. We tend to guess what our bosses would think of this
proposal first, or if our proposal would harm any senior people’s
benefit or interest first.”
The former Premier of France, Dominique de Villepin, said:
“Today we are experiencing a crisis that has never existed in the
world’s history, and we are in the transformational times of
world civilization. Today we need leaders who have the capabilities
to reach these two conditions and make it better: first, to
build a new relationship based on the historical, geographic, and
Chinese Food You Never Had
It is almost universally known that Chinese food abroad is quite different from what it is within China, but Wilson had never thought it
would be so different.
It all happened in Erie, when Wilson was on his first assignment with CAS. Erie is a little town famous for making locomotives, and 10%
of its population works for GE. One day, Wilson went out for lunch at a local Chinese restaurant called China Buffet with an American
colleague. At the buffet, General Tso’s Chicken, Egg Drop Soup, and Moo Shoo Pork were served.
After dinner the waiter gave them a little cookie wrapped in a plastic bag. Wilson opened the bag and immediately put the cookie into
his mouth.
“You eat the fortune too?” both the colleague and the waiter were very surprised.
“Fortune?” It was then that Wilson felt something odd in his mouth and spatted the cookie out.
“You are Chinese, and you don’t know what a Fortune Cookie is?” They couldn’t believe it. A Fortune Cookie is a small cookie with a piece
of paper in the middle that has life advice and lotto numbers. It’s a standard complimentary item in Chinese restaurants around U.S..
Love Lost in Puerto Rico
What would you like to do when you are in a foreign country? Most people would visit the historic sites or taste the
delicious food, so did Joyce Yuan! One weekend on assignment in Puerto Rico, Joyce and her colleagues went on sightsee -
ing. Joyce was so amused by the scenery alongside the road that when she turned back she was far behind her team. She
walked at her quickest to catch up with them, but was suddenly stopped by a man in a uniform when she tried to cross
the street.
“Blah, blah,” the man in uniform said something in a language Joyce did not understand.
“Blah, blah.” repeated the man.
Joyce couldn’t understand him; neither could she cross the street for him being there. So she smiled and responded: “I
don’t understand!”
The man looked at her and said more slowly, “You look so beautiful.”
Out of surprise and shyness, Joyce ran away without saying a word.
What if she didn’t run away? Maybe this story would have a different ending? Anyway, love lost is better than love never
Teaching My Father English
Aaron’s father was visiting U.S. for the first time, and Aaron had been preparing for the visit. He wrote a list of English words that his
father would most probably need, for example, “Hot water, no ice”.
One day Aaron had to attend a meeting, so his father and mother decided to take a stroll to see the sights
in Orlando, Florida. During the walk his father needed to use the restroom.
“WC, WC,” his father asked the people walking by. In most countries WC refers to restroom, so
his father assumed those two English letters also worked in the U.S.
“WC?” He continued to ask but everyone shook his or her head, having no idea about what he
“Americans don’t understand English?” The father asked his son.
“You should say restroom!” Aaron corrected his father.
“Restroom, restroom”, his father repeated. The very next day, his father left the hotel to practice his new
words.
“You know one day your parents will get old and you’ll grow up. The thing is that you never knew it
My First Car Accident
There is a saying that in the U.S. your car is your feet, since you cannot live without a car in that country. When Jerrie arrived in
Florida, the first thing she did was to learn how to drive. Like most new drivers, Jerrie was very excited when she was finally granted
the honor to drive the team’s shared rental car. Her confidence tripled as she passed several blocks, and her passengers fell peacefully
asleep.
Then she came across a yellow traffic light at an intersection. There were few cars on the road, and a truck was about to cross in
front of her. Being pretty sure that the truck driver would stop for her to go, Jerrie decided to keep on driving and stepped on the
accelerator.
Bang! Crash!
Jerrie couldn’t believe it! The truck and her car collided. Jerrie was totally shocked.
“I had a car accident, in a place thousands of miles away from my home,” Jerrie thought.
Jerrie intended to get out of the car and apologize to the truck driver, but the truck driver had already driven away as he had no idea
Jerrie’s little car hit his big truck.
The insurance company covered Jerrie’s car repair and everyone was all right.
Jerrie advised to those who want to drive: “If your car is your feet, you should take better care of
your feet, especially in a foreign country.”
“It Is So Hot!”
In the middle of July, during the hottest month in India, Lin Zhao and his wife were on their way to
the Taj Mahal. The white marble floor felt like it was burning, and the reflection could blind your
eyes. Lin Zhao and his wife were drenched with sweat. To make things worse, they had to take
off their shoes and walk on bare feet while in the Taj Mahal.
The temperature of the floor was around 47℃. Lin Zhao and his wife had to tiptoe forward like
kangaroo. They thought their feet would make perfect spicy pig knuckles (a famous Sichuan dish)
should there be hot pepper.
“Can we take a picture of you and your beautiful wife?” A group of Indians politely asked.
“Of course!” There was pride in Lin Zhao’s voice that people noticed his wife was gorgeous.
But soon Lin Zhao was quite regretful for his decision. To take good pictures, Lin Zhao and his wife were
told to stand upright and still. Under the intense sunshine and on the burning marble floor, how could
one stand still? Their feet were burning! Whenever Lin Zhao or his wife moved a little, the Indian friends
would shout, “DON’T MOVE!”
55 LIFE at GE
