Dear Colleagues,
Welcome to the CIRSE 2006 Annual Meeting
and Postgraduate Course, the most
advanced scientific and educational event
organized in the field of Cardiovascular and
Interventional Radiology in Europe.
This year's meeting will offer you the possibility
to select from 29 special sessions, 45 workshops,
more than 130 lectures, 3 interactive
case discussions, 160 free papers, 264 scientific
exhibits, 18 satellite symposia and the largest
dedicated technical exhibition, among many
other things.
The programme will enhance one's own theoretical
Interventional Radiology that are of remarkable
clinical importance.
Apart from CIRSE's outstanding congress,
Rome, "la città eterna", will offer all participants
its beauties for which it is very well
known worldwide: its monuments, historical
sites going back thousands of years, its
churches, buildings and much more. It will
also offer its residents' welcome to you, the
vital atmosphere of the old city centre and its
typical restaurants.
Welcome Addresses
Welcome to the Eternal City, where Julius
Ceasar, Augustus, Nerva and Trajan walked
in antiquity. CIRSE now follows in their
footsteps by bringing the Annual Meeting
to Rome.
For those of you who enjoy a sense of history,
this is probably one of the most historic cities
in the world, and to walk through the Forum,
the Coliseum or the Capitoline and Palatine
Hills is to walk back in time. I hope you will
find time during your visit in Rome to enjoy
these historic delights, as well as the friendly
atmosphere, beautiful architecture and restaurants
of the new Rome.
There is a very exciting programme at the
CIRSE meeting this year, with numerous basic
and advanced workshops, foundation courses
on biliary intervention and SFA angioplasty, a
mini-symposium on intermittent claudication
running over three days, multiple satellite
symposia, hands-on workshops and exposure
to simulation machines for Interventional
Radiology. Truly, there is something for everyone
at this CIRSE meeting.
The social functions organised by Professor
Passariello and Professor Simonetti will be
spectacular and I thank them for all their
efforts.
I look forward to seeing you in Rome for what
promises to be an excellent educational, professional
and social meeting.
Gold Medallist
Barry T. Katzen
Barry T. Katzen is the founder and Medical
Director of Baptist Cardiac & Vascular Institute,
a part of Baptist Health South Florida and is a
clinical Professor of Radiology at the
University of Miami School of Medicine.
Dr. Katzen, who is a resident of Coral Gables,
Florida, is married to Judith and has three
daughters. He graduated from the University
of Miami School of Medicine and was honored
with the gold medal of its alumni association.
He entered into the "Hall of Fame" at the
Medical School, only the fourth such honoree
in medical school history. Dr. Katzen completed
an internship at Jackson Memorial Hospital
and a radiology residency at the New York
Hospital Cornell Medical Center. He was
awarded a fellowship in cardiovascular radiology
at St. Vincent's Hospital and Medical
Center in New York.
Dr. Katzen considers himself to be "European
trained", since his fellowship time was spent at
the Policlinico Umberto Primo "La Sapienza"
(University of Rome) under the direction of
Plinio Rossi, M.D. After returning to the United
States, he became Director of Cardiovascular
Radiology at St. Vincent's Hospital Medical
Center in New York. During that time, he
established the use of angioplasty and thrombolysis
through a collaborative relationship
with vascular surgery.
In 1976 Dr. Katzen established the Non-
Invasive Vascular Laboratory and
Interventional Radiology Programs at
Alexandria Hospital in Virginia. During his time
in Alexandria, he pioneered the use of video
and sophisticated audiovisual technology to
enhance the process of education for established
practitioners. He is credited with being
the first to use "live patient demonstrations" in
the United States, which went on to become
the benchmark for procedural education in
endovascular therapy.
In 1987 Dr. Katzen moved to Miami, Florida, to
found what was then called Miami Vascular
Institute at Baptist Hospital. The successful
development of a unique multidisciplinary
infrastructure resulted in Baptist Hospital
developing a $20 million dollar free-standing
facility attached to the main hospital. Two
additional floors, including a 40,000 square
foot patient care center, were added in 2000
to complete the Institutes' vision to have all
services totally integrated.
Dr. Katzen is the Founding Medical Director
and Chairman of Baptist Cardiac & Vascular
C RSE
Gold Medal
Institute's Executive Committee and serves in
numerous capacities throughout Baptist
Health of South Florida, including being a
Board Member of the Baptist Hospital
Foundation.
Since its foundation nearly 20 years ago, the
Institute has gone through numerous
changes, resulting in its ultimate name, Baptist
Cardiac & Vascular Institute. It has served as a
national model of the success of multidisciplinary
cooperation leading to hundreds of site
visits from institutions from around the country.
Dr. Katzen has authored numerous book chapters,
in addition to over 160 peer reviewed
articles in scientific journals. He is considered
one of the pioneers of percutaneous transluminal
angioplasty and peripheral thrombolysis
for less invasive treatment of vascular disease
and was part of the investigative team that
lead to the approval of the first intravascular
stent. More recently, he has been actively
involved with the development of endovascular
repair of AAA and carotid stenting.
Dr. Katzen is the founding editor of Techniques
in Vascular and Interventional Radiology and is
currently one of the Chief Medical Editors of
Endovascular Today. Dr. Katzen has been
national site principal investigator for many
clinical trials in AAA and other aneurysms,
carotid stents and other medical devices. He
has given invited and named lectures
throughout the world and additionally has
worked hard to assist the development of
innovative procedures in various countries
including Singapore, Thailand, Japan and
Korea.
Together with his colleagues, Dr. Katzen also
created the Endovascular Forum, one of the
first interactive circulatory disease websites for
physicians. On two occasions he has been chosen
as one of Radiology's 20 Most Influential
by Diagnostic Imaging magazine, in addition
to being listed in Best Doctors in America.
Dr. Katzen has been passionate about transforming
Interventional Radiology from a technical
to a clinical discipline through his writings
and teaching. His brand of clinical practice
has been emulated by many others
throughout the United States and Europe. He
is a past president of the Society of
Interventional Radiology and was part of its
Executive Committee for many years. Dr.
Katzen has been awarded the Society of
Interventional Radiology's Gold Medal for lifetime
achievement. He has also served as
Chairman of the American Heart Association's
Council of Cardiovascular Radiology and
Intervention.
Rome, the Eternal City
Almost since its beginnings Rome has fascinated mankind
unlike any other city. For millennia, visitors to la città eterna
have been captivated by its gorgeous monuments, cultural
delights and timeless beauty. Here are some of
Rome’s most beautiful sites which will make your days in
Rome not only a professional, but also an incomparable
cultural experience.
The Colosseum
Originally known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, the Colosseum
was built by Vespasian in AD 72. With a capacity of approximately
50.000 spectators it was the largest amphitheatre of
antiquity.
The Pantheon
Originally built as a temple to the seven deities of the seven
planets, the Pantheon became a Christian church in the 7 th century
AD. It is one of the best preserved ancient monuments in
Rome.
The Roman Forum
was the central area for commerce, administration, justice, cult
and socializing around which ancient Rome developed. It comprises
the remains of numerous temples, basilicas and arches.
The Sistine Chapel
The rectangular chapel designed by Baccio Pontelli and built in
the late 1400s is most famous for Michelangelo’s frescoes.
C RSE
The Vatican
Although not technically part of Italy, no trip to Rome would
be complete without a visit to the Vatican. The tiny sovereign
state headed by the Pope boasts some of the world’s most
important architectural feats, including St. Peter’s Basilica and
the Sistine Chapel.
St. Peter’s Basilica
Built on top of the burial site of St. Peter the apostle, it is considered
one of the holiest sites in Christianity. Its 5.7 acres of
floor space provide enough room for more than 60,000 people.
The cathedral’s inside is decorated with innumerable masterpieces,
such as Michelangelo’s Pietà.
Trevi Fountain
marks the end of the aqua virgo, one of Rome’s ancient aqueducts.
Nicolò Salvi’s baroque masterpiece depicting Neptune
and the taming of the waters and is an extremely popular
meeting spot for tourists. Legend has it that those who throw a
coin into the fountain will return to Rome one day.
Castel Sant’Angelo
The cylindrical building overlooking the Tiber River was originally
built as a mausoleum. Later it served as a castle and
fortress for more than 1,000 years. Today it houses a museum
and is considered one of Rome’s most important medieval
buildings.

Good Clinical Research Awareness Programme
Good Clincial Research
Good clinical trials are essential for the future of Interventional Radiology and although we see more and more good research, many
of the current studies and publications are not performed according to internationally accepted standards for Good Clinical Practice.
In order to get one's work published in high ranking journals, the implementation of good clinical practice is indispensable. It is
essential to be aware of all the regulations and pitfalls in clinical research before starting a trial. European and a growing number of
local healthcare authorities are introducing Good Clinical Practice in their regulations concerning clinical trials as well.
Therefore it is essential to know about all of this before starting to research.
CIRSE gives you the opportunity to learn more about this topic with a Good Clinical Practice Awareness Programme. Registration for
the programme is free of charge for all CIRSE 2006 attendees. A certificate of attendance will be provided after the programme.
I would urge all of those interested in clinical research in Interventional Radiology to attend this unique course.
